Since 2005 this vessel has cruised the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River where it has been docked since 2005. 

This GB is a two-stateroom galley-down layout provides a larger salon and galley with 2 fridges and a freezer, full oven and stove, new microwave, and plenty of storage for cruising. At the lower helm there are full electronics including GPS, Radar, autopilot with remote and wind gauge, depth gauge, etc. This GB is very comfortable on long trips with is Naiad Stabilizers. Forward of the galley there is a full-size  washer and dryer, guest head with separate shower, guest stateroom with 2 over/under bunks and plenty of storage. The Grand Banks 46 Classic is the perfect size for many cruising families. She offers plenty of interior space, and yet remains easily manageable for a crew of two. Running the boat from the flybridge, the captain has superb visibility and total command of the ship thanks to the carefully planned steering and navigational area. Wide, walk-around decks and aft cockpit allow for the crew's safe, secure movement while at sea and during docking. In the large cockpit lazarette, in the seat lockers, on the aft cabin roof, and in the forward deck locker, are places for fenders, cleaning supplies, a dinghy, an outboard motor, power cables, dock lines, and more. In the saloon, comfortable seat lockers and a built-in teak table create a friendly and secure atmosphere underway or at anchor. The main saloon offers a panoramic view. An inside steering and navigational station provides a comfortable, dry haven for the helmsperson. The large owner's aft cabin features a walkaround, queen-sized bed. The east coast of Florida is clearly visible outside the salon windows, the profiles of waterfront condominiums passing by as we track straight through the two-foot seas at 30 knots. Then Tucker West, the North American sales manager for Grand Banks and the man at the helm, turns to me and says, “Are you ready to have some fun?” Suddenly the condos disappear and it’s just ocean and sky as West cranks the wheel of the new Grand Banks 46 Eastbay SX hard over and it feels like, well, like we’re carving turns in a little sport boat.

Sportiness is not a modifier often associated with Down East-style express cruisers. But the new 46 Eastbay is powered by the Zeus propulsion system from Cummins MerCruiser Diesel, which changes the game as far as performance and handling are concerned. What you get is the same C. Raymond Hunt Associates-designed modified V-hull of the old 45 Eastbay, only with the increased maneuverability associated with pod-drive installation.

Pod drives rotate independently of each other and apply thrust directly through the units, making them far more responsive at the helm than straight inboards. Zeus drives can also rotate sideways and direct thrust to an almost 60-degree angle, moving the boat laterally as if it had bow thrusters. We get close-quarters confirmation of the Zeus drives’ abilities pulling into the marina, where the 46 is assigned the last slip on a crowded pier with a knuckle-whitening lack of wiggle room around it. West switches over to the joystick control, deftly spins the 46 in place and backs it into the slip without breaking a sweat.

Another major attribute of pod drives is that they require less hardware belowdecks, so you gain interior space, a benefit readily apparent on the 46 in all of its layout options. The first increase in space can be seen under the companionway stairs leading to the lower deck. The stairs lift on gas-assisted struts, revealing a step down into a wealth of extra room. On our test boat this is configured as a “utility room,” with a washer, dryer and freezer, but you could do a number of things to suit your needs. Convert it to fishing-tackle center, a tool-bench work area or a large stowage space for long-distance provisions. You can also set it up as a crew quarters, with a single berth and a small head, a popular option for European owners.

The extra space carries forward into the guest stateroom, which has private access to the standard day-head. On the 45, the optional day-head sat across the passageway. As with the 45, on the 46 you have the option to move the galley upstairs, moving the aft port settee. Doing so on the 46 gives you the choice of adding a third stateroom, providing serious sleeping space aboard a 46-footer.

David Hensel, marketing and communications director for Grand Banks Yachts, says about half of the owners opt to move the galley upstairs because they like its proximity to the cockpit, where they can pass food and drinks through the electronically actuated window. However configured, the 46 can serve duty as an entertainment platform, a weekender, a coastal cruiser or an island hopper.

Beyond space and maneuverability, the Zeus system brings other, more subtle improvements. Because the pod drives are partially recessed in pockets and there’s less exposed running gear, the Zeus system shaves a few inches off the boat’s draft — down to 3 feet, 4 inches compared with 3 feet, 11 inches on the 45. The Zeus system is also lighter than a comparable inboard installation, creating some weight savings.

Like the 45, the new 46 has the same classic lines of the original Hunt-designed 38 Eastbay EX brought to market in 1993. But like the 45 before it, the 46 lends a more contemporary feel to the Down East concept, with tweaks such as the radial windows at the aft corners of the deckhouse and the forward-raked stanchions that give the profile a sportier look. Inside, the 46 also eschews the traditional standup helm of its predecessors for a Stidd helm seat and a smaller and, yes, sportier wheel for more comfortable cruising. Visibility from the helm is excellent with the large windshield panels, side and aft windows and Man Ship hatches overhead that bathe the cabin in natural light. The optional retractable sunroof in the salon overhead only increases the interior vibrancy. Grand Banks also lightens the ambience belowdecks by adding soft panels to break up the teak bulkheads.

Whatever the contemporary upgrades, the teak is still the main interior feature that makes the 46 Eastbay distinctly Grand Banks. The company prides itself on the quality of its teak, and for good reason. While many builders buy theirs through a middleman, Grand Banks sends someone from the factory, a teak aficionado, to buy first-grade teak logs directly from a source in Myanmar. The logs are shipped to the Grand Banks plant in Malaysia, where they are kiln-dried for 14 days, air-dried and cut to specification by veteran woodworkers. Interior teak receives six coats of varnish; exposed teak gets seven. As a result, the joinery aboard the 46 Eastbay looks uniform in appearance, with no color mismatches or zebra striping. Add the rich navy-blue hull with white boot stripe, and it’s obvious the 46 will turn heads at the dock.

In areas you can’t see, the 46 is still very much a traditional Eastbay, constructed with high-density closed-cell foam coring in fiberglass that’s still laid in the mold by hand. The stout construction and Hunt hull design serve it well offshore, where, sure, we played a bit like little kids in a Donzi Sweet 16, but we also felt comfortable running through the inlet in a head sea. This boat may have a 21st century propulsion system underneath, but it’s still old-school Down East to the core.

The Rise of Moscow

Moscow was only a small trading outpost in the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal in Kievan Rus’ before the invasion of Mongol forces during the 13th century. However, due to the unstable environment of the Golden Horde, and the deft leadership of Ivan I at a critical time during the 13th century, Moscow became a safe haven of prosperity during his reign. It also became the new seat of power of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Ivan I (also known as Ivan Kalita) was born around 1288 to the Prince of Moscow, Daniil Aleksandrovich. He was born during a time of devastation and upheaval in Rus’. Kiev had been overtaken by the invading Mongol forces in 1240, and most of the Rus’ principalities had been absorbed into the Golden Horde of the Mongol Empire by the time Ivan was born. He ascended to the seat of Prince of Moscow after the death of his father, and then the death of his older brother Yury.

Ivan I. He was born around 1288 and died in either 1340 or 1341, still holding the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir.

Ivan I stepped into a role that had already been expanded by his predecessors. Both his older brother and his father had captured nearby lands, including Kolomna and Mozhaisk. Yury had also made a successful alliance with the Mongol leader Uzbeg Khan and married his sister, securing more power and advantages within the hierarchy of the Golden Horde.

Ivan I continued the family tradition and petitioned the leaders of the Golden Horde to gain the seat of Grand Prince of Vladimir. His other three rivals, all princes of Tver, had previously been granted the title in prior years. However they were all subsequently deprived of the title and all three aspiring princes also eventually ended up murdered. Ivan I, on the other hand, garnered the title from Khan Muhammad Ozbeg in 1328. This new title, which he kept until his death around 1340, meant he could collect taxes from the Russian lands as a ruling prince and position his tiny city as a major player in the Vladimir region.

Moscow’s Rise

During this time of upheaval, the tiny outpost of Moscow had multiple advantages that repositioned this town and set it up for future prosperity under Ivan I. Three major contributing factors helped Ivan I relocate power to this area:

• It was situated in between other major principalities on the east and west so it was often protected from the more devastating invasions.
• This relative safety, compared to Tver and Ryazan, for example, started to bring in tax-paying citizens who wanted a safe place to build a home and earn a livelihood.
• Finally, Moscow was set up perfectly along the trade route from Novgorod to the Volga River, giving it an economic advantage from the start.

Ivan I also spurred on the growth of Moscow by actively recruiting people to move to the region. In addition, he bought the freedom of people who had been captured by the extensive Mongol raids. These recruits further bolstered the population of Moscow. Finally, he focused his attention on establishing peace and routing out thieves and raiding parties in the region, making for a safe and calm metaphorical island in a storm of unsettled political and military upsets.

Kievan Rus’ 1220-1240. This map illustrates the power dynamics at play during the 13th century shortly before Ivan I was born. Sarai, the capital of the Golden Horde, sat to the southeast, while Moscow (not visible on this map) was tucked up in the northern forests of Vladimir-Suzdal.

Ivan I knew that the peace of his region depended upon keeping up an alliance with the Golden Horde, which he did faithfully. Moscow’s increased wealth during this era also allowed him to loan money to neighboring principalities. These regions then became indebted to Moscow, bolstering its political and financial position.

In addition, a few neighboring cities and villages were subsumed into Moscow during the 1320s and 1330s, including Uglich, Belozero, and Galich. These shifts slowly transformed the tiny trading outpost into a bustling city center in the northern forests of what was once Kievan Rus’.

Russian Orthodox Church and The Center of Moscow

Ivan I committed some of Moscow’s new wealth to building a splendid city center and creating an iconic religious setting. He built stone churches in the center of Moscow with his newly gained wealth. Ivan I also tempted one of the most important religious leaders in Rus’, the Orthodox Metropolitan Peter, to the city of Moscow. Before the rule of the Golden Horde the original Russian Orthodox Church was based in Kiev. After years of devastation, Metropolitan Peter transferred the seat of power to Moscow where a new Renaissance of culture was blossoming. This perfectly timed transformation of Moscow coincided with the decades of devastation in Kiev, effectively transferring power to the north once again.

One of the most lasting accomplishments of Ivan I was to petition the Khan based in Sarai to designate his son, who would become Simeon the Proud, as the heir to the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir. This agreement a line of succession that meant the ruling head of Moscow would almost always hold power over the principality of Vladimir, ensuring Moscow held a powerful position for decades to come.
