the Chesapeake in a Bristol 27'. DO NOT LET IT SCARE YOU or dissuade you from your lovely choice of boat. Just thought you might find it instructional. The post-discussion is quite informative as well.

Please remember - this is an extreme situation: wind-over-tide (as they call it in England) and high winds and seas.

See my earlier point about religiously checking the and the wind/sea state you're comfortable with.

like a big dinghy! Very responsive to the , but also demands that you pay attention to it. very maneouverable and fast! great fun with an asymetrical . Simple systems with only 1 thruhull for the sink so is a dry boat!

It was probably the most fun of any sailboat I've owned!

in the small craft channel in Georgian Bay (narrow, complicated, lots of islands and rocks, for those who don't know it): a friend, more experienced than I, was at the - and everything else. A chart in one hand, the mainsheet in the other, the tiller under one knee - reassured me he didn't need any help.

But, seriously, don't ask me for objective comments. I met my wife on an Edel 665 and still see both through rose-coloured glasses.

to encourage you to engage your son in the sailing adventure and to encourage him to push his limits at every opportunity. you'll be amazed at how much he can accomplish and with amazing speed.
I often double handed our 33' boat with my daughter starting around the age of 5. It's OK to be scared, it's not OK to act scared. How does that translate to boats? When the boat heals over and makes you uncomfortable, you can scream or you can loosen the main sheet. Screaming is acting scared, loosening the main sheet is being scared and taking appropriate action.
In 6 years you're friends will all remark about how well you get along with your son.
In my daughters high years we were returning from whale watching 20+ miles and put up the . I gave her the and a heading and she piloted the boat home 20 miles and never collapsed the spinnaker, not even once.

I am sure you will involve him in all the shared planning and responsibilities. Lucky little sod.
I would suggest that he will mature faster with the shared responsibilities than any other kid standing on the shore looking wistfully at him and his mum achieving fun things together.

26D but for various reasons we and went to the Edel.

It is a very solid and forgiving boat - we are relative neophytes as well. Reefing is easy and we installed a this spring. We are slowly working towards more extreme weather and have gone out in some howling weather! This is something we never would have done with the D.

I guess what I am trying to say is (if you have not already discovered this summer) that you made a very good decision with the Edel.

Would love to see some shots! Have you chosen a name? Ours is "Irish Wake"

Stay safe,

Review of Edel 6

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The interior is like many other boats made of mahogany. Mahogany belongs to the hardwood species, known for being water-repellent and resistant to decay. It has an attractive wood grain and holds wood polish and varnish well. The boat is equipped with one cabin, 4 berths, a galley, 40.0 liter fresh water capacity and toilet facility.

The Edel 6 is equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The Edel 6 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.00 - 1.10 meter (3.28 - 3.58 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

An outboard motor is often used on this boat. In that case Edel 6 will typically require a power of 2 - 3 hp, alternatively 48 - 58 lbs thrust if you prefer an electrical motor. Electric outboards are becoming popular for sailboat owners who want clean instant power with less noise and no exhaust fumes.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Edel 6 is 2.45, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Edel 6 is about 92 kg/cm, alternatively 520 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 92 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 520 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 20.16

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 15m 2 (161 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 6.7 m(21.8 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)
Genoa sheet6.7 m(21.8 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)
Mainsheet 16.6 m(54.5 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)
Spinnaker sheet14.6 m(48.0 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)

This section is reserved boat owner's modifications, improvements, etc. Here you might find (or contribute with) inspiration for your boat.

Do you have changes/improvements you would like to share? Upload a photo and describe what you have done.

We are always looking for new photos. If you can contribute with photos for Edel 6 it would be a great help.

My suggestion is RAM Mounts too. I was just at a dealer show that they had a rep at. The options are limitless. They have a modular platform that can give you all kinds of different mounting options to work with. It's quality gear.

WayneH

We started using RAM mounts on our motorcycles to hold the smart phones for maps. So when we needed a mount for the Ipad on the boat, we went with RAM again. The Bimini bow just forward of the helm has a space where the hold down shows the bow. We bought a ball and rail mount for there, an Ipad bracket and a two sided clamp. The ball mount allows us to adjust the view of the Ipad for whoever is behind the wheel. Plus when not in use and in fair weather, we just rotate the Ipad up to the bimini and clamp it there out of the way.

What is correct towing sail boat (Edel665(keel,2400lb)on dual axels trailerSlogan Shadow (1990,1000 lb) using Nissan Murano (towing capacity 3500lb)?

  • Add to quote

Questions: 1.Towing rules of Edel 665 (fixed kerl, 2400lb) on dual axel trailer 1000 lb using SUV Nissan Mirano with the same towing total capacity 3500lb 2 How to modify the most foot of Edrl 665 to lift it by one person using roller- fuller mechanism? I just bought sail boat Edel 665 (1978 and tow it to Vancouverin Toronto Canada and tow it now to Vancouver for 4500 km including kast 500 km in mountain.I stopped after 600 km as I recognized after 600 km absence braking on the trailer with original electrical brakes at the inspection in trailer shop. The all bearings buddies, beafings will be replaced during two days and broski g management of electric brakes wilm be from the cell phone. Is electrical braking more rrlzble compared the hydraulic brakes? How properly should I use electric brake? I had only suge brakes before .However, I recognized that 2400lb boat is sitting improperly in a trailer as it doesnt press two front pads, very tightly fixed on the front trailer jack, and the trailer tilted to a car hitch due to the low position of the car towiing hitch. Should I use level on flat boat ster to adjust position of two front and two rear pads to centralize a keel ? How tight connection must be of a boat bow to the front trailer jack? What must be applied pressure on the boat sitting on four pads (tight?) with two straps (front and rear , upper pads) ofour pads must be? Should boat on a trailer tilted (what angle) to the direction of a car hitch direction providing required at least tongue weight 10% of boat weight (how can I control that) What is specific precursions and technique for the towing of a boat on trailer using underpowered SUV with towing capacity equal total weight of boat on trailer with electric brakes (and whitout brakes if lost them) on HWY in mountains ? What is the gap (cm?) must be between bottom of a keel and surface of a keel tray? Is the keel must be centralizes? Should be the front edge of keel at fron edge of the keel tray? How can I apply roller-fuller mechanism to lift 27" mast myself as on the boat with similar option to easy to lift a mast?It was my main mistake when I selected this boat and now I dont know how to lift the mast of Edel 665 at every ramp my boat as I dont have moorage. Thank you I advance for your answers help, sharing experience

There should be no gap between the keel and the keel support on the trailer. The objective is to get the boat to rest on the lowest point of the trailer to keep center of gravity low. I am not really sure I understand all the questions right. If you are asking orientation, the boat while sitting on the trailer comfortably, with the bow against the stop (is that the winch you reference?), and the keel on the support, and the bunks supporting port/starboard, should provide 10% of the total weight (roughly 350lbs) of downforce on the hitch. When hitched the boat trailer should be perfectly parallel to a flat road underneath. The car should not be dramatically lowered in the back nor should the front of the car be lifted so much as to provide inadequate steering (wobble). If for some reason the trailer is angled down, every time you hit the brakes, the hitch weight will go up dramatically. So raise the hitch! Since you are RIGHT at the maximum towing for your vehicle, and you are (if I understand) not sure if the brakes are working correctly, I'd submit to you that this is probably a bad idea. However if the brakes work fine, but you are worried about stopping if the brakes fail, then that is a legitimate concern. For this reason boat trailers are usually better fitted with surge brakes, a mechanical version of braking that is traditionally much more reliable than electrical, especially when wet! That being said, surge brakes can be a real PITA when launching if you don't lock the surge mechanism to off. Towing as far as you plan 4500km (sorry I'm a silly Imperial numbers guy, some 2700miles?) sounds like a LONG distance to travel at the maximum of your cars capacity. Lets assume your car is brand new and perfect working order, you will be right at the maximum capabilities of your vehicle. Now take the same car add 50-100,000 miles on it, and everything is going to be less than perfect. The actual towing capabilities could be significantly less than original. Lifting the mast would not be a big issue on that boat yourself, a simple A-Frame or gin pole will work. To me a 21 foot boat you likely could do without it completely. Adding furling to the boat yourself would also be a pretty easy task, about $800 all up maybe? CDI makes good kits, look for one that would work with a Catalina 22 or Capri 22 and the size should be close. Last thing I will say is, are YOU sure your weights are right? This link SailboatData.com - EDEL 6 (665/660) Sailboat shows the overall weight of the boat is 3484lbs, add a trailer and you are WELL over your limit to tow with a Nissam Mirano, so a boat that size would necessarily need 2 axles. Single axle trailers usually max out at exactly 3500lbs. Seems heavy if it really is that heavy for a 22 footer. By contrast the Capri 22 is 2500lbs. I'd say consider renting a pickup truck, however you will still need to address towing the boat once you get it home. I have heard good things about the Edel boats, not seen them very often though.

edel 665 sailboat

We have a Nissan Murano, albeit a very old one. Of all your concerns, the one I would have that you don't mention is the Murano's CVT transmission. They are notoriously problematic. Don't think I'd trust that to tow at max load for a long distance. Mark
