5 Secrets Boat Clubs Don’t Want You to Know

Table of Contents

On the surface, boat clubs seem like a great idea. Instead of buying a boat, you pay a monthly fee and have access to a range of different vessels. The problem is that, in reality, things don’t work out quite that smoothly. Here are five major drawbacks to joining a boat club that they keep secret from you.

  • Limited selection of boats
  • Too much pressure
  • Limited locations and blackout days for boating
  • Overcrowded club and a false-promising waitlist
  •  Unreasonable costs

Let’s look at these together to save you loads of money and get you the best boating experience .

What is a boat club

A boat club is a membership-based organization that provides individuals with access to a fleet of boats without the burdens of ownership. While boat clubs offer convenience and cost savings, it’s important to consider certain limitations before joining. Joining a boat club means paying a regular fee and booking boats according to availability, which gives members the chance to enjoy boating experiences. Nevertheless, it’s important to consider some possible disadvantages.

What are the drawbacks of a boat club membership?

1) Limited selection of boats

When we join a boat club, there is this idea that one weekend we can take out a family-sized pontoon and the next, a luxury catamaran . The problem is that most clubs really only offer a pretty narrow selection of boats. And, with most people having the same free time as in being off—weekends, holidays, and summertime—then you may find yourself standing empty-handed.

2) Too much pressure

One big problem with joining a club is you feel pressure to get the most out of it. The average annual boat club is $275 per month. If you don’t boat that often or have a hectic month, it feels like money just is thrown down the drain and just another wasted expense.

3) Limited locations and blackout days for boating

While some clubs have locations worldwide, you’re pretty much chained to one location, typically a touristy spot. Freedom Boat Club, for example, is one of the largest boat clubs in the world, and most of its locations are in the US. On the other hand, smaller, more affordable local-based boat clubs may only have one or two locations that make getting the most out of the boat club, to be blatant, difficult!

While boat clubs may offer you different tiers of membership based on where and when you plan to go boating, keep in mind those plans come with restricted access. One option might be a week day only membership, another may be limited to your city’s club. As life changes and your schedule along with it, you soon come to realize being locked into these plans isn’t the best bang for your buck.

4) Overcrowded club and a false-promising wait list

This is what they really don’t want to tell you: the club is full! Instead, they’ll put you on a waiting list and have you pay an upfront fee without having enjoyed anything yet. If you do get into a club that is overcrowded, getting on the water might be really difficult because there are too many other people trying to do the same thing as you.

5) Unreasonable costs

It all comes back to cost. At the end of the day, the price of joining and maintaining a boat club membership is simply unreasonable. Typically you pay several thousand dollar initiation fees and several hundred dollar monthly fees, so often it’s cheaper to own your boat or just rent one!

While you think some more about it, let us show you the differences between our proud peer-to-peer (P2P) boat-sharing community and a few popular boat clubs in the US.

Boatsetter V. Carefree Boat Club

Like most boat clubs, Carefree Boat Club has an initial membership fee and an annual fee. These fees vary depending on the location and may even be monthly. According to Godownsize.com , the initial membership cost ranges from $4,000 to $6,000, and the monthly cost ranges from $140 to $300.

As you can see, boat clubs get pricy, quickly. You might get the full value out of Carefree Boat Club, but it won’t be easy. By renting a boat with Boatsetter, you can avoid all inflated fees! Just pay each time you would like to take out a boat, and you are all set for a fun day out on the water. Boatsetter V. Nautical Boat Club

Like many other boat clubs on this list, Nautical Boat Club has an initial one-time membership cost and an ongoing monthly cost. The monthly membership cost may vary depending on the boat and the location. The total for your first year with Nautical Boat Club can range from $4535 to $14,355.

Our goal at Boatsetter is to make boating accessible to everyone by not tying our customers to recurring fees. All of our boats across the country are available for rent—no catch!

Boatsetter V. 321 Boat Club

321 Boat Club is a Florida-based boat club with initiation costs ranging from $975 to $3,450 and monthly costs ranging from $149 to $249. 321 Boat Club membership levels largely depend on what day and time you would like to take out a boat. With 321 Boat Club’s fleet being limited to specific parts of Florida, this may not be the best option for everyone. With Boatsetter, you can rent boats across the country on any day of the week!

Boatsetter V. Freedom Boat Club

Freedom Boat Club has a one-time entry fee and monthly membership plans that vary by location. The club offers access to boats, free training, insurance coverage, and special events. Fuel costs are not included. It emphasizes the club’s transparency and commitment to providing a great boating experience for its members.

Boatsetter, on the other hand, is a boat rental marketplace where individuals can rent boats directly from boat owners. The cost of renting a boat on Boatsetter varies depending on factors such as the type of boat, location, duration, and any additional services or amenities requested.

Boatsetter offers a wide range of boats to choose from and provides insurance coverage for both boat owners and renters. The rental fees generally do not include fuel costs, which are the responsibility of the renter. The biggest benefit of using Boatsetter vs Freedom boat club is that there is no long-term commitment or costs!

Monaco Yacht Club: An Exclusive Oasis For Marine Lovers

10 stories about the districts of Monaco

Looking down on the Yacht Club from Monaco’s exclusive seawater Spa, “ Thermes Marins ”, the new club-house really is a magnificent icon of multi-decked architecture – inaugurated in 2014 and designed by internationally renowned architect Lord Norman Foster.

Only in the Principality’s marina could you confuse this giant structure for the yachts around it that it resembles – a yacht mirage with a gorgeous deck with luxurious swimming pool and terraces for dancing. Splendid enough for meetings of the most discerning yacht enthusiasts, including the glitterati and “Three Comma” billionaires that frequent it.

Yachts Beyond the Reach of Mere Mortals

Some of the largest and most expensive yachts in the world dock here to take in the city’s pleasures, particularly during the iconic Monaco Yacht Show. You can wander around marvelling at all of the gadgets designers can inlay on these boats like the 348-foot-long AMADEA one of the largest and most distinctive superyachts in the world with its six distinctive guest decks. Or perhaps gaze at the 365-foot-long TIS, one of the largest and most regal yachts to be launched this year.

These superyachts, like the Yacht Club itself are like private islands and wouldn’t look out of place in a James Bond movie. If billionaires Bernard Arnault or Larry Page or Larry Ellison come calling, Monaco Yacht Club sets the stage perfectly.

Home of the Grimaldi Dynasty

For over 600 years from the 12th century onwards, the Grimaldi stronghold at Port Hercule, including where the Yacht Club now preens itself, was one of the prized naval assets on the Mediterranean. Its strategic location served more than once to change the course of history.

It was around the time of the reign of Charles III of Monaco that the Principality’s reputation as an international haven of luxury and wealth took off. And Charles III had the vision to encourage the development of Monaco as a magnet for international regattas of renown to which the world flocked.

Historic Regatta Heaven

The first of these regattas were held in the bay of Monaco in 1862, so successful that in 1888 the “Société des Régates” was established by Prince Charles III and his son Prince Albert I , affectionately known as the “Oceanographer Prince”.

Almost a century of famous regattas preceded the founding in 1953 by Prince Rainier and presided over by Prince Albert II since 1984, the Yacht Club de Monaco. The Club brings together more than 2000 members from 66 nationalities. Many of the world’s most prestigious private yachts fly the Yacht Club de Monaco’s burgee, testimony to its unique position in the International yachting world.

Prince Albert’s Presidency

In April 1984, with Prince Albert’s Presidency, he developed new international events such as the Primo Cup, the biggest gathering of monotype yachts in the Mediterranean Sea. Prince Albert also put emphasis on classic Yachting with the organization from 1994 of the Monaco Classic Week for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts.

Notably, it was the first visit of Atlantic 2010 (replica of the 1903 three-mast schooner on which Charlie Barr in 1905 set the best time for an Atlantic crossing) to the Principality. Another icon, the SS Delphine (1921) steam-boat made a welcome return. It was aboard this beauty that three world leaders, Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill, negotiated at least part of the 1945 Yalta Agreement.

Yacht Seasons are typically opened with ultra-private concerts at YCM with celebrities like Sir Elton John in 2016, Duran Duran in 2017, and Sting last year. It was yet another global star Lionel Richie singing “All Night Long” this September who delighted the many boat owners and YCM members. “All Night Long” was attended by YCM President, Prince Albert II and a host of international personalities including actor-producer Samuel L. Jackson, basketball legend Magic Johnson, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and fashion designer Domenico Dolce, one of the two behind the eponymous brand D&G.

Regatta and Sports Heaven with a Golden Future

The Monaco Yacht Club from its beginnings embraced and has nurtured a prestige Regatta program that has accelerated and taken on new dimensions under Prince Albert’s Presidency.

It is worth mentioning the Primo Cup again as it has quickly established itself as the big meeting that opens the season in the Mediterranean for Europe’s one-design elite. Just a few other examples of stand-out Regattas enjoyed by YCMmembers include:

Monaco Swan One Design,  (9th-13th April 2019) organized in conjunction with the Yacht Club de Monaco,  was the first event in the 2019 Nations Trophy Mediterranean League.

Monaco Globe Week with the IMOCA 60  – 60-foot monohulls being among the fastest modern racing monohulls have raced on a course totalling 1,300 nautical miles embracing some of the most emblematic marks in the Western Mediterranean.

Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series  offers a monthly programme alternating high level regattas and training weekends for onedesigns.

As well as the Primo Cup another innovation worth a double mention here is  Monaco Classic Week. Persuaded that the reading of the past holds keys for the future Prince Albert fostered the creation and coordination during five years of a unique circuit for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts, without forgetting the acquisition of Tuiga in 1995, since becoming the flagship of the YCM. More recently the wave continued with the launching in 2005 of the “La Belle Classe” label.

The whole yachting world continues to look to Monaco to organize its most prestigious events. Within the last 12 months, 200 guests from the America’s Cup community from around the world gathered at the Yacht Club de Monaco to celebrate the launch of  the Prada Cup – the Challenger Selection Series for the 36th America’s Cup  to be presented by Prada in January 2021 in Auckland – deemed as “ the quest for oldest trophy in sport ”, the America’s Cup. Not to forget  World Rowing with the  Prince Albert II Challenge , a 6000m coastal race organised by the Societe Nautique de Monaco.

The Enthusiasm and Promise of Monaco’s Youth at YCM

Looking to the future is the Monaco Sports Academy which provides support to gifted young Monaco sailors and sportsmen taking on the world. The Academy is a close collaboration between the Yacht Club de Monaco, presided by Prince Albert and its General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri, and Philippe Ghanem who is an active member of the Club. They share a common goal: to help young athletes living in Monaco reach the highest level in sport.

Also founded in 1970 by Prince Rainier III, the Sports Section of Y.C.M. adapts training to youngsters from as young as age six from initiation to competition and at every age.

Look out for the Monaco Optimist Team Race from 9-12 January 2020. The regatta is reserved for 20 teams of young sailors, all under 14. YCM invites the most competitive clubs with emphasis on tactics and above all team-work.

Full of youthful energy and promise is  the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge  next held on 30 June-4 July 2020. The Yacht Club de Monaco, in collaboration with the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation organises the Solar & Energy Boat Challenge which is unique in the world.

How to become a new member of the Yacht Club

Anyone wishing to become a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco needs to be introduced by two “sponsors” from YCM. The sponsor’s letter of introduction will explain the applicant’s motives for joining the Club. Prince Albert, President of the Yacht Club, presides over the meetings of the admissions’ committee. The role of the sponsor is essential. The latter, must integrate him into the life of the Yacht Club, accompany him, present him to the other members but also involve him in organized events, whether they be social or sports.

The sponsor also undertakes to ensure that his “protégé” embraces the YCM’s philosophy and values, will actively engage in the Club’s life and keep its reputation at the pinnacle.

A Regal Club and Natural Host of Prestigious Events

The Yacht club reaches well beyond being a club for owners of yachts and superyachts. It is actually an immense infrastructure akin to a multi-tiered island that organises not only events connected to the yachts and regattas but also all kind of sports and social events, dances and entertainment. High society balls, conferences, exclusive business gatherings and prestigious auctions are just part of the kaleidoscope of activity.

The members of the club and their guests have at their disposition restaurants with Michelin Star chefs (including the exclusive 1909) gyms and a library – and a spa-zone, not to mention the gorgeous pool and terraces overlooking the azure bay. There is a truly great bar, a hive of social contact, with an international reputation and winner of awards for its unique cocktails and the skills of its bar staff. Endless discovery is to be found in each private niche of this island-club.

Boat Club Memberships: Why Should You Join?

boat clubs

You may not feel completely ready to choose a boat even after shopping around and using our Boat Finder  tool, you might need to wait to pull the trigger because of economic factors, or maybe you just think easing your way into the boating lifestyle is a smart move—whatever the reason, boat clubs offer an excellent alternative to buying a new boat. In fact, boat clubs have experienced soaring popularity since they first began showing up a few decades ago.

Boat club costs are significantly less than purchasing a boat outright, boat club membership often comes with additional perks like boating education classes, on-the-water training, insurance coverage, and/or social events, and there are boat clubs near me, near you, and near just about everyone else who lives anywhere close to a popular waterway. In fact, there are hundreds of locations across the nation from several different providers and whichever you choose to be your boat club, endless boating opportunities for you and your family probably lay right around the corner.

Follow along as one family explores what a boat club membership is all about in their local area.

How Boat Clubs Work

boat club membership

You can choose a center console and catch some dinner one day and then take the kids out on a watersports boat for some wakeboarding the next, so the experience is really an entire family boat club experience no matter what sort of boating one family member or another likes the most. Plus, most boat clubs maintain some form of reservation service or website so you can choose whichever boat you’d like to use on a specific day, ahead of time.

Boat Club Prices

Boat club prices vary quite a bit because boats and boating costs are different in various parts of the nation. Some clubs also offer different membership levels, and/or seasonal memberships that only run for part of the year. As a result, the only way to find out exact pricing is usually to contact individual locations near you. That said, it’s certainly fair to say that joining a boat club costs a fraction of the price of buying an average-sized boat.

Renting vs. Boat Club Member

Boat clubs are very different from rental organizations, though the two often get confused. Rental facilities don’t offer the extra services of a club, they often have a very limited number of boats in just one or two different sizes and styles, and are commonly found only in tourist destinations. Rather than having a fleet of well-maintained, relatively new boats to choose from, you’re likely to encounter a limited choice of boats that have been used hard and put away wet, when you opt to rent.

There are also sailing clubs—be sure to read The Benefits of Joining a Sailing Club or Organization to learn more.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Boat Clubs

Let’s break down the advantages and disadvantages of a boat club:

  • Boat clubs provide a wide range of boat types and sizes.
  • Boat club prices are far less than buying most new boats, and in many cases different levels of membership are available at different price-points.
  • Reservations can be made ahead of time for specific models, or you can grab whatever’s available on the spur of the moment.
  • Boat club membership comes with a number of perks ranging from boating education to insurance coverage.
  • The club takes care of maintenance and tends to keep the fleet in excellent condition.
  • Some membership plans include reciprocal rights to go boating at the club’s different locations, so you may be able to utilize your membership from coast to coast.

Disadvantages

  • You don’t actually own the boats, so you can’t customize them.
  • A boat you’d like to take out on the spur of the moment may have been reserved by someone else on that particular day.
  • There may be some restrictions and/or required training for overnight use.
  • Although joining a boat club is far less expensive than owning the average boat, it’s still a substantial expense.

What is a boat club?

A boat club is an organization that maintains a fleet of boats which are available to its members, and its members only.

How much do boat clubs cost?

The cost is variable, but a fraction of the cost of purchasing and owning a boat.

Is a boat club worth it?

Most members certainly think so, and the popularity of boat clubs and their widespread success would seem to indicate that those members are right.

How do boat clubs work?

You join, then you go boating. Sure, there are more details which we discuss above, but that’s the bottom line.

Thank you for your interest in the Lake Norman Yacht Club! LNYC is a sailing club for members of all experience levels. Our mission is to promote the sport of sailing, both recreational cruising and racing. We have an active keelboat fleet, and our junior program is one of the strongest in the southeast!

If you haven't already been to the club, we highly recommend coming to visit for a tour or one of the many events this season. We do have a limited number of club-owned boats that members can use, including a Highlander, a Flying Scot, a San Juan 21, and 420s and Vanguard 15s (420s and V15s belong to the junior program, but adults use them too). For any of these boats, you would contact the captain for that particular fleet and they will check you out on the boat and have you sign any associated waivers.

Membership Types There are two types of membership, Associate and Resident, available to New Members.

Associate members can enjoy full use of the property, including the pavilion, clubhouse, swimming area, and launch ramps. The biggest difference is that Associate members are not permitted to keep boats on the property. Associate members can attend all the annual meetings of the club, but in the case of a vote, they do not have the opportunity to vote. Of course, they can contribute to the discussion!  Resident members have a vote in any situations that might arise during annual meetings, and they can keep property on the property, including boats on trailers in dry storage, a sailboat in a slip, or a camper in one of our campsites.  Resident membership includes one dry storage space for a sailboat. Powerboat dry storage incurs additional fees. Slip space is for sailboats only and involves additional fees. Slips are limited and there may be a waiting list.

For either type of membership, you'll have a one-time initiation fee and then annual dues. Your dues are prorated from the date your membership is approved by the board of directors.  In addition, all club members have the responsibility to serve on race committee. This means you will go out and help run races on a weekend of your choice. You'll sign up for duty and the PRO (principal race officer - the person in charge of the racing) will reach out to you so she/he can assign you a role that you feel comfortable with doing. Running races takes a few people who know racing very well, but also takes many people who don't have to have an extensive knowledge of racing. Secondly, since we're an all-volunteer club,  members are asked to come out and help at one of the club workdays or complete a club project on their own time. If LNYC sounds like the right fit for you, please apply by clicking here .

If you have more questions before you decide, please contact our membership chair at  [email protected] .  She will be happy to assist you!

Yahoo’s former president and her husband largely agreed to split their last shared assets, including proceeds from the sale of homes in Belvedere and Laguna Beach, under a final divorce settlement filed Monday.

Susan Decker, the former Yahoo executive, and Michael Dovey, an investment banker who left the business, settled the long-running case on Sunday night, the eve of trial. On Monday, their lawyers presented the 15-page agreement to Judge Verna Adams in Marin Superior Court.

Mauna Berkov, one of Dovey’s attorneys, described it to the judge as “the Treaty of Versailles.”

“Should I wear a wig?” Adams said.

The judge read the settlement and signed off on it. Decker and Dovey, who were married in 1992, were not present in court.

“Congratulations. Today’s trial is vacated,” Adams told the lawyers. “They showed a lot of maturity and judgment to take their destiny into their own hands.”

Court documents suggest that Monday’s deal involved nearly $20 million in assets. About $50 million more in assets and claims were settled previously in the case.

The deal ends more than four years of litigation and mudslinging by the couple. In court filings, he accused her of drug use, infidelity and electronic bugging, while she accused him of drug use, infidelity and fiduciary misconduct.

“As in any acrimonious divorce, certain statements were made by the parties in the process of litigation that were reckless and inaccurate,” the couple said in a joint statement after the settlement. “We deeply regret this.

“We have three amazing children and we share the important task of raising them responsibly and lovingly. For their sake, we want to put this matter to rest once and for all and have settled all matters in this case.”

The couple, who had more than $70 million in assets when the divorce was filed in 2007, had divided about three-quarters of the assets by the end of last week. The trial scheduled for Monday was over the remaining money and real estate. Child custody issues were resolved previously in the case.

Under the final settlement, the couple will sell the former family home on Peninsula Road in Belvedere and divide the proceeds. The home is valued at about $5 million.

A vacation condo in Laguna Beach, valued at about $6 million, will also be sold, and the proceeds divided.

The couple will sell their membership at the Shady Canyon Golf Club in Irvine and divide the proceeds. The membership came with an acquisition cost of $260,000, according to a court filing.

The couple will continue to maintain their memberships at the San Francisco Yacht Club, the Tiburon Peninsula Club and the Meadow Club, but not renew their membership at the Stanford Golf Club.

They will each receive $750,000 from a shared investment account, while keeping $2 million in it for tuition and other expenses for their children. They will fund a $2 million trust fund for the children, whose ages range from 9 to 14.

Both parties agreed to cover their own legal expenses, which have run to millions of dollars.

The settlement also waives spousal support claims by either party, and divvies up restricted stock shares, investment accounts and Costco stock options. Decker, who resigned from Yahoo in 2009 amid a management shakeup, still sits on the boards of Costco, Berkshire Hathaway, Intel and LegalZoom.

The 11th-hour settlement means that two Yahoo officials who were ordered to testify — John Zent, head of corporate security, and outside counsel Michele Floyd — will not have to take the stand. Dovey’s lawyers had sent a flurry of subpoenas to Yahoo seeking electronic records from Decker’s job and information on Zent’s activities.

Zent says he arranged, at Yahoo’s expense, a security review of the Belvedere home, including an electronic sweep for bugs, according to court filings. He denied that Yahoo paid for private investigation of Dovey, saying he referred Decker to an outside firm regarding any private surveillance issues.

Decker, 49, still lives in Belvedere. She moved out of the Peninsula Drive home in 2009 and bought two properties on Edgewater Drive, right across Belvedere Lagoon, valued at about $5.4 million.

Dovey, 52, who left investment banking while still in his 30s, has been living in the Peninsula Road house pending the outcome of the divorce. He also has a $3 million condo at the St. Regis in San Francisco.
