East Coast Cruising: New York sightseeing by sea

  • April 24, 2024

With the wind in her hair, Angela Rice joins friends for some east coast cruising from Rhode Island to New York aboard Swallow, a Catalina 380.

Angela is sitting near the front of the boat. Manhattan skyscrapers are in the background. It's a cloudy day.

Flying alone, I was due to meet our friends Janet and Richard in Rhode Island for east coast cruising, as our proposed UK crew had cancelled at short notice.

Given the potentially demanding overnight offshore passage to New York, Richard had strong-armed a local couple, Ellen and David, to join us aboard Swallow .

Janet, a former Reluctant Sailing Wife, now fully retired from the sea, doubted Ellen’s enthusiasm. But her husband David raised no alarms, so on they hopped.

A side view of Swallow resting in a marina on a sunny day. Her sail is wrapped up.

The passage would be sailed aboard Swallow, a Catalina 380. Photo: Angela Rice

We cast off from Wickford Harbour on 30 August in bright sunshine to motor-sail for four hours through the huge Narragansett Bay.

There we met the helpful south-running tide under the Jamestown Bridge and continued on towards Point Judith, where the Narragansett meets the Atlantic.

East coast cruising with cockpit sundowners

Now we were in the Atlantic, with a different motion. Ellen fell suspiciously quiet as a light westerly wind took us southwards for several hours to Block Island – a nature reserve and resort, named after the Dutch seafarer, Adriaen Block.

Its a sunny day with a view of the island from the boat. Ellen is sitting on deck, looking out.

Ellen is relieved to reach Block Island. Photo: Angela Rice

We moored there in the Great Salt Pond and swam off the back of the boat in the lovely clear water.

We marked the cocktail hour in the cockpit, admiring the scenery and sunset. The harbour launch then took us to Dead Eyed Dick’s restaurant, where the food is better than the name suggests.

Richard is wearing a jumper, sunglasses and sun hat. His hand is on the wheel and its shaded under the helm's canopy.

It was the eve of Labour Day weekend and the place was buzzing. It was a fun evening.

Our departure the following day was calculated backwards from our aim of reaching the Ambrose Light around 0700, which allowed us to catch the tide into New York harbour.

The famous Ambrose light is actually no more, having been carelessly demolished by a tanker years ago, but it continues to exist virtually as a navigation point.

We left at midday, initially motor sailing in light easterlies towards Montauk, at the eastern point of Long Island, but able to cut the engine at the southwest shelf, which extends out for 12 miles.

As the promised northerly had failed to appear and the wind and seas had increased, we revised our plan to run parallel with the shore and instead gybed south onto a beam reach, with reduced sail.

A moonless confusion

Once clear of Montauk Point, we bore off southwest onto a broad reach, gybing back towards the island later, then taking a long tack out to sea. The wind increased steadily during the evening and was gusty.

The journey. Photo: Angela Rice

We were averaging 7.5 knots, so Richard further shortened the sail when he came on watch at 2300.

David, on watch from 0400, in the deeply black, moonless night, experienced a huge and disorientating wind shift, which swung Swallow ’s bow back towards where we’d come from.

Richard was up in a flash and diagnosed that the autohelm had kicked out. ‘Had Swallow become homesick, maybe?,’ we speculated.

Later a (genuine) wind shift to 250° brought us within sight of the approaches, and a tack to 290° got us to our virtual buoy rather neatly at 0730.

Apart from the one blip, it was a very satisfactory passage. But a different story had unfolded below decks.

The marina with boats moored on calm water. The weather is overcast.

If you have only ever sailed in the sheltered waters of the Narragansett, the incessant, turbulent, washing-machine movement of the open Atlantic can be a shock.

Ellen, having opted to retire to bed, found herself hurled from one side to the other of the double stern bunk. With enormous difficulty, she hauled herself through to the companionway and hung on it, begging for it all to stop!

Unable to deliver that miracle, I could however wedge her in cosily with pillows against the cabin table, on the port bunk. I considered tucking in the gin bottle too!

Article continues below…

Respite in sight

Continuing our east coast cruising in the calmer waters of the Ambrose Channel, the relief on Ellen’s face suggested the sight of Manhattan on the horizon was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.

It is very special, as is passing under the Verrazano Bridge, spotting the Statue of Liberty, playing dodgems with the Staten Island Ferries, entering the Hudson River and hanging a left into the plush Liberty Landing marina on the New Jersey shore.

A photo from the boat, looking out at the Verrazano Bridge in the distance. Its a cloudy day.

Not any old high-end marina, but one in the heart of New York and surrounded by soaring skyscrapers, twinkling into a magical backdrop as night falls.

The next day we motored gently down the East River, under the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg, and Queensboro Bridges, through district after district and past apparently endless, towering, iconic buildings.

We arrived at the potentially treacherous ‘Hell Gate’ narrows, which should be negotiated with a following tide.

The narrows were originally named ‘Hellegat’ by Adriaen Block, which means ‘beautiful gate’, but were corrupted by the British on their charts.

We went on until the river opened out into the Long Island Sound. Manhasset was our base for a New York visit, the starting point for our calmer inshore return passage, and also where our crew left us – one with great relief!

U.S. Military Aid for Ukraine Could Soon Flow Again

What would $60 billion buy? Lots of air-defense missiles and artillery ammunition, according to the Pentagon.

A man in military garb standing in a dug hole holds a gun in a forest. Another man looks down at him.

By John Ismay and Eric Schmitt

Reporting from Washington

Shipments of American weapons could begin flowing to Ukraine again soon after a long-stalled aid package becomes law, U.S. officials say, with goods from the Pentagon’s stockpiles in Germany to be shipped quickly by rail to the Ukrainian border.

The measure would provide the Ukraine war effort with about $60 billion. A sizable amount is set aside to replenish U.S. defense stockpiles, and billions more would be used to purchase U.S. defense systems, which Ukrainian officials say are badly needed.

In a statement on Saturday after the House approved the aid package, President Biden urged the Senate to swiftly take up the measure to help meet Ukrainian forces’ “urgent battlefield needs.” It was expected to do so as early as Tuesday.

For months, Ukrainian military officials have complained that political paralysis in the U.S. Congress had created critical munitions shortages in the war against Russia. Ukrainian troops on the front lines have had to ration shells, and morale has suffered.

U.S. officials have not explicitly said which weapons the United States will send to Kyiv as part of the package, but Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, told reporters on Thursday that more air-defense and artillery ammunition would probably be included.

“We have a very robust logistics network that enables us to move matériel very quickly as we’ve done in the past,” General Ryder said.

“We can move within days,” he added.

Transfers from the United States by cargo aircraft and maritime vessels are typically arranged by the headquarters of U.S. Transportation Command , in rural Illinois, which maintains extensive databases of cargo ports, railways and roads that can be used by military and civilian transport craft around the world.

Weapons and ammunition sent to Ukraine are often drawn from Pentagon assets in Europe, with shipments coordinated by an organization created in late 2022 called the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine, which is based in Germany and operates within the Pentagon’s European Command . It has a staff of about 300 people.

Military leaders have sent Ukraine 55 aid packages of weapons called PDAs — for presidential drawdown authority — containing a mix of vehicles, ammunition, drones and other items worth at least $26.3 billion since August 2021.

The aid packages, which often came twice a month after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, slowed significantly last fall as some Republicans have become bitterly opposed to sending more aid to the country.

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III welcomed congressional movement on the aid package on Saturday.

“The world is still watching,” he warned in a statement. “Lives are still on the line. America’s long-term security is still at stake. We must never give our friends, our rivals, or our foes any reason to doubt America’s resolve.”

The last aid package, announced on March 12, included Stinger antiaircraft missiles , guided rockets for HIMARS launch vehicles , small anti-tank rockets and 155-millimeter artillery ammunition that included cluster munition rounds .

General Ryder was asked about a nonbinding measure in the House legislation to send Kyiv weapons called ATACMS , which have been the Pentagon’s longest-range ground-launched guided missiles since the late 1980s.

The Biden administration agreed to provide a small number of those missiles last year, and Ukrainian forces used them to strike two air bases in Russian-occupied territory in October . Ukraine’s special operations forces said the attack damaged runways and destroyed nine Russian helicopters among other targets.

“Of course as you know, we’ve always said nothing is off the table,” the general said of potential new provisions of ATACMS. “But I don’t have anything to announce today.”

The United States has a limited number of these weapons, and officials have said that the rest of their ATACMS arsenal is reserved for contingency plans should the United States fight a war with Russia, North Korea or China.

Officials have also signaled that additional ATACMS could be provided to Ukraine as soon as the weapons’ replacements, called Precision Strike Missiles, begin to enter the Pentagon’s inventory.

On Wednesday, a spokesman for Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of both missiles, said the company delivered the first four operational Precision Strike Missiles to the U.S. Army last year. A $220 million contract signed in March will provide the U.S. Army with more, though it was not immediately apparent how many that would buy.

The exact number of weapons the Pentagon has sent to Kyiv from its stockpiles is also unclear.

The last time the Defense Department updated the number of 155-millimeter artillery shells it had provided to Ukraine was in May, when it said that more than 2 million such projectiles had been sent so far. Each of the 17 aid packages announced for Ukraine since then have included 155-millimeter ammunition.

But sending more weapons to Ukraine depends on more than political will. The United States also has had to accelerate the production of the munitions Ukraine most needs to meet its demand.

In the United States, making artillery ammunition takes several weeks , as heavy steel bars are forged into empty projectiles in Scranton, Pa., then shipped to rural Iowa, where they are filled with explosives and prepared for delivery.

General Dynamics, which operates the Pennsylvania factory, is opening a new factory to make metal shell bodies outside Dallas to help increase total numbers of completed shells. The Army says it makes about 30,000 of the high-explosive shells each month, up from about 14,000 per month before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Army’s goal is to produce 100,000 155-millimeter artillery projectiles per month by 2025.

The United States is not alone in providing military aid to Kyiv.

Since April 2022, the defense secretary has convened meetings of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group roughly every month. The participants have included NATO nations, several of the United States’ major non-NATO allies and at least two South American nations that previously purchased arms from the Soviet Union and Russia.

The group solicits requests directly from Ukrainian military and civilian leadership.

After a virtual meeting of NATO defense ministers on Friday , Jens Stoltenberg, the alliance’s secretary general, said Germany would deliver an additional Patriot air-defense missile system to Ukraine along with about $4.3 billion in military support from the Netherlands among other aid from NATO members.

“Ukraine is using the weapons we provide to destroy Russian combat capabilities,” Mr. Stoltenberg said in a statement. “This makes us all safer.”

“So support to Ukraine is not charity,” he added. “It is an investment in our security.”

Robert Jimison and Helene Cooper contributed reporting.

The 8 Fastest Cruising Catamarans (With Speedchart)

As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. We may also earn commissions if you purchase products from other retailers after clicking on a link from our site.

Cruising catamarans are some of the most comfortable boats to roam the water, making them fantastic for both long-term voyages and short-term vacations. Still, cruising catamarans can be great racing boats, but just how fast can they go?

Some of the fastest cruising catamarans include the Gunboat 68 (35 knots), Outremer 45 (25 knots), ORC50 (25 knots), FastCat 435 (20 knots), TS 42 (35 knots), and Lagoon 440 (20 knots). Yet, there are many more cats that can reach 35 knots safely.

If you are interested in knowing about the fastest cruising catamarans, I have you covered. I will be discussing some of the most popular, fastest cruising catamarans and the features that make them so excellent for sailors in need of speed. You will learn more about each catamaran’s speed and amenities, and I will let you know a trick or two to maximize your speed under sail.

How Fast Are Cruising Catamarans?

On average, cruising catamarans can reach top speeds of 15 knots , around 17.3 mph (27.84 kph). However, some exceptional, racing-designed cruising catamarans can reach up to 30+ knots in the right wind conditions.

When you want to better understand catamaran hull characteristics, I suggest the book Catamarans a Complete Guide (amazon link) by the president of Aeroyacht catamarans and that you check out my article Why catamarans capsize .

Factors That Impact Speed

Weight & size.

When you consider a catamaran’s speed, you will need to keep in mind the boat’s weight and narrowness. A vessel that can travel at 15 knots will still move slower if the boat is heavy or has a wide, extensive hull. When increasing the total weight of the boat, the boat “sits” lower in the water, thus increasing water drag and reducing speed.

Why trimarans are faster than catamarans!

Now that we know how weight impacts sailing characteristics, it follows that; if you are planning on racing your catamaran, you should remove as much luggage or extra gear as possible. Eliminating as much weight as possible will help you travel at your cat’s maximum speed .

Narrow Hulls

The hydrodynamics of the ship will heavily affect your speed. Narrower boats can chop through the water with less effort, making slender ships with pointed hulls far faster than wide vessels. So if you are looking for the fastest one available, you should look for a slender hull.

Slim hulls vs. space is a common tradeoff for catamarans optimized for family sailing .

Wind will also affect your ship’s speed, so do not expect your cruising catamaran to reach the maximum speed without heavy wind. Generally, cruising catamarans have two large sails (at least) to power them through the water, and some are so efficient that they can travel even faster than the wind.

Although a strong wind is needed to energize the sails and move the boat, too much wind will instead make the sails less efficient, and maximum speed is most often attained at lower wind speeds but with flat water.

Light Weight Materials

Faster cruising catamarans are often made from carbon fiber materials and fiberglass to keep the weight down. If you are looking for the quickest catamaran that you can find, you should note the materials that the ship is made out of and try to get one that is primarily made from carbon, glass, and resin materials.

While you are looking for the perfect catamaran for you, you should keep in mind what you NEED and what is NICE with your ship. Usually, this decision is between size and speed, but some of these excellent vessels have both.

Lightweight materials are usually costly; for example, a carbon fiber mast will probably cost you +$20 000, depending on the cat’s size.

I have written a buyer’s guide that explains the concept of NEED vs. NICE , which will make choosing the right boat faster and more accurate.

Gunboat 68 (+35Kts)

Gunboat 68 is a cruising catamaran designed to reach the highest speeds possible. Made by Gunboat, the ship uses Grand-Prix racing boats’ designs to develop the speediest cruising catamaran on the market.

Gunboat 68 is made entirely from carbon composites, which keeps the ship lightweight and fast. Gunboat 68 is the perfect catamaran for anyone who wants to reach the highest speeds possible while maintaining control of the vessel and not bouncing around too much.

Gunboat 68 has comfortable, spacious living quarters, though it also has a spacious deck with luxurious seating. Indeed, this cat has it all, making it one of the best cruising catamarans for racers and casual sailors. The design maximizes all of the living spaces and uses lightweight materials to add elegance and luxury to a speedy racing catamaran.

Gunboat 68 is one of the fastest cruising cats out there, with its maximum speed at more than 30 knots . Gunboat 68 can achieve these fast speeds, thanks to its lightweight construction and narrow hull design.

Still, Gunboat can customize your ship’s plan to accommodate your needs. Whether you are looking for a faster, more lightweight boat with a more extensive sail or a more comfortable cruiser, Gunboat 68 is an excellent option for you.

Specifications

TS 42 (ORC 42)

The TS, or Tres Simple , cruising catamarans, designed by Marsaudon Composites, are some of the fastest cruising catamarans in the world.

Marsaudon developed the ship’s plans using racing boats’ streamlined designs and combined them with a cruising catamaran’s comfortable living spaces. The TS 42 has an inverted hull which helps it glide on the water swiftly without requiring much fuel, but it also has a spacious below-deck area with plenty of luxuries.

TS cruising catamarans are often considered the fastest cruisers on the market, with their speed comfortably reaching upwards of 35 knots in the right wind conditions. Generally, TS catamarans can sail at 20 knots, even with moderate wind. They are the perfect catamaran for racers and high-speed travelers, and yet they still have the amenities of a pleasant live-in vessel.

The TS 42 has a large galley and comfortable cabins, making it a cozy home or vacation vessel. With multiple bathrooms, large windows, and open lounge spaces, these catamarans are superbly comfortable to live in.

The deck and cabin space are divided by a large, openable window, which adds extra light and ventilation to the living areas. It also has plenty of on-deck space, which is rare in such a small vessel with an inverted hull.

If you think I’m using too many confusing nautical terms, you’ll find all the answers on my Catamaran parts explained page .

  • Length: 42.8 ft (13 m)
  • Beam: 24.3 ft (7.4 m)
  • Draft: 4.9 ft (1.5 m) with boards up and 7.5 ft (2.3 m) with boards down
  • Displacement: 5.8 tonnes

Outremer 45

Based in France, Outremer (pronounced uutremeer 😉 ) designed their Outremer 45 to be a long-lasting cruising catamaran that sails smoothly at high speeds. The Outremer 45 can reach about 15 knots, but the most comfortable sailing speed is 10 knots. However, it can travel up to 25 knots in the right wind conditions, making it a quick ship with all of a perfect cruising catamaran’s luxuries.

It is made for durability from carbon, vinyl ester, and divinycell so that it can last many years without repairs. The Outremer 45 has a narrow hull, and it is designed to be as thin as possible to maximize speed and fuel efficiency. Outremer 45 still has comfortable living quarters with large windows and lounge spaces within the boat. Indeed, it sacrifices no comfort for speed.

In this article, I talk a lot about catamaran characteristics, both interior and exterior, if that’s something you want to better understand, then I recommend an article where I write about trade-offs in design choices .

The Outremer 45 was initially designed to be a boat that would last 50 or more years, and it excels in its durability. It has an open, uniquely expansive side deck and plenty of on-deck conveniences that make sailing a breeze in the ORC50.

With supreme safety features such as tall railings, slip-free grips on deck, and enclosed lounge spaces, it is one of the safest catamarans available (is safety your top concern? I wrote a list of the safest catamarans on the market).

  • Maximum Speed: 25 knots
  • Length: 48 ft (14.6 m)
  • Beam: 23.3 ft (7.1 m)
  • Draft: 3.3 ft (1 m) with boards up and 6.7 ft (2.04 m) with boards down
  • Displacement: 8.2 to 11.1 tonnes

Marsaudon Composites ORC50

Marsaudon Composites designed the ORC50, or Ocean Rider Catamaran 50, with both speed and comfort in mind. The ORC50 can be used for cruising, but it is also a great racing boat that has been awarded honors from many races worldwide.

Marsaudon borrowed designs from racing skippers to plan the ORC50, bringing together a cruiser’s comfort with the speed of an award-winning racing boat.

This cruising catamaran is lightweight, which allows it to gain speed at a fast rate, but still has comfortable living quarters inside the boat. It has a rotating carbon mast, which helps to eliminate turbulence over the mainsail and therefore increasing sail efficiency and speed!

With strong winds, the ORC50 can reach up to 23 knots , making it extremely fast for a cruising catamaran. The ORC50 can easily reach speeds much faster than the wind speed, which is a unique quality of this fast, yet comfortable catamaran.

The ORC50 is an excellent long-term living ship with its many organizational compartments, expansive galley, and well-ventilated sleeping cabin. It also has plenty of couches and seating areas built into the boat, and its intuitive design adds plenty of comfort to the cruising catamaran without weighing down the ship.

  • Length: 50 ft (15.23 m)
  • Beam: 27 ft (8.2 m)
  • Draft: 5.6 ft (1.7 m) with boards up and 8.9 ft (2.7 m) with boards down
  • Displacement: 13 tonnes

FastCat 435

African Cat’s catamarans, including the FastCat 435, are designed for speed and racing. This ship is mainly composed of epoxy, fiberglass, and carbon components, making it very lightweight to ensure that it travels as swiftly as possible.

The FastCat 435 may be as light as possible, but it is durable enough to last for many years in the most extreme conditions.

The FastCat 435 has comfortable living quarters and well-designed comfort spaces so that you can get the most out of your trips. The FastCat also has a green hybrid design, and it uses primarily electric power, which can help you prolong your sailing and use less fuel.

I find solar-powered/electric cats pretty exciting, so much so that I wrote an entire article called The Best Solar-Powered Catamarans on the subject.

The FastCat is an excellent option for anyone who wants a smaller cat with a comfortable design and incredible speed. FastCat’s electric power is also a unique, favorable feature for anyone who wants to use less fuel.

  • Maximum Speed: 20 knots
  • Length: 42.7 ft (13 m)
  • Beam: 24.4 ft (7.4 m)
  • Draft: 3.9 ft (1.2 m) with boards up
  • Displacement: 2.4 tonnes

The Lagoon 440 cruising catamaran, like the FastCat, has an electric powering version, which cuts down on fossil fuel usage and ensures that your ship will keep moving. The Lagoon 440 is also among the easiest catamarans to maneuver, thanks to its electric drivetrain and automatic engines.

The speed of the Lagoon 440 usually maxes out at 10 knots with low winds, but with higher winds, it can quickly gain speeds up to 20 knots (some argue even higher, but I’m doubtful). The Lagoon 440 is an excellent cruiser and comfortable catamaran, but it is not an all-out racing cat.

Lagoon is a well-known brand, but there are some caveats, and are Lagoons still making good catamarans?

Below the deck, the living spaces in the Lagoon 440 are magnificent. The ceilings are high, allowing the tallest of passengers to stand in the cabin. The many storage compartments and furnishings have a modern, elegant design. The interior is one large primary cabin with a few private spaces below the deck.

  • Length: 44.6 ft (13.6 m)
  • Beam: 25.3 ft (7.7 m)
  • Draft: 4.3 ft (1.3 m)
  • Displacement: 10.5 tonnes

Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42

Fountaine Pajot designs some of the most luxurious yet speedy cruising catamarans available in the world. They are renowned for their safe, durable designs that make sailing a comfortable, relaxing experience. And on a personal note, i think the name sounds beautiful!

Their cruising catamarans use an inverted hull design that has become a signature mark of Fountaine Pajot vessels. This hull type allows the water to pass beneath the ship quickly, which increases the speed and fuel efficiency of the cat.

The Astréa 42’s primary benefit is its spacious, comfortable living quarters and large, open deck spaces. The ship’s interior spaces have large windows, large lounging areas, and plenty of storage compartments.

The cabin’s ventilation is also excellent, which reduces the classic musty smells of sea living. You can also get two different models of this catamaran, either in a one-cabin option or a two-cabin option, making it an excellent vessel for larger or smaller families.

The Astréa is ideal for long-term sea living and family vacations (it is not as fast as some more racing-oriented cats). Although the Astréa is not the speediest cat available, with its speed maxing out at about 10+ knots, even in favorable wind conditions, its luxurious atmosphere and comfortable cabin spaces make up for its relatively slow speed.

Don’t get me wrong, despite its lower speed compared to the boats on this list, the Astréa 42 can still get you places quicker than many other cruising catamarans (and most monohulls). So, if you want all of the elegance and comfort of a cat and are not too worried about racing, this ship is an excellent option for you.

  • Maximum Speed: 10 knots
  • Length: 41.3 ft (12.6 m)
  • Beam: 23.6 ft (7.2 m)
  • Draft: 4.1 ft (1.3 m)
  • Displacement: 12.3 tonnes

Privilege Signature 510

The Privilege Signature 510 is a long-distance cruising catamaran designed for long-term voyages and sailing in extreme weather conditions. It features a durable, weatherproof design that will protect you from rainy and cold weather while sailing.

The helm and living spaces are completely covered, making it safe to live in, even in cold or stormy weather. It also has an automatic sail adjustment system with the controls at the helm, allowing you to make any adjustments from the helm’s safety and comfort.

Privilege Signature 510 also has an elegant, well-designed living space with plenty of amenities, including an accelerated cooling system, a spacious bathroom and kitchen, and plenty of windows for natural lighting.

With an elegant floor plan, this cozy ship is perfect for long-term living.

The Privilege Signature is not the fastest catamaran on the market, with a maximum speed of around 13 knots. Still, it is one of the quicker cats considering its elaborate amenities and comfortable size.

  • Maximum Speed: 13 knots
  • Length: 50 ft (15.24 m)
  • Beam: 26 ft (7.98 m)
  • Draft: 5 ft (1.57 m)
  • Displacement: 25 tonnes

Although cruising catamarans are great boats for slowly cruising along the water, they can also be swift, substantial racing boats that reach speeds of up to 35 knots. These speedy cruising catamarans still come with all of the amenities of leisure boats, but they also reach incredible speeds without rocking or tossing.

Understanding Boat Insurance

Walkthrough of the boat buying process.

Purchasing a boat is all about finding the right watercraft to suit your lifestyle needs.

If you’ve ever financed a new car or bought a house, the process of buying a yacht might seem familiar. However, there are some notable differences that new boat buyers and seasoned yachtsmen should keep in mind to make the process easier.

In This Article: This guide highlights what to expect when buying a yacht, thoughtful questions you should ask, and how buying a used boat differs from purchasing a brand new vessel.

Use this information to help you prepare for your next purchase.

Looking to buy a pre-owned model? Let our checklist for buying a used boat steer you in the right direction.

  • What to expect in the boat-buying process including sales contracts, escrow, down payments, financing options, and insurance.
  • Questions to ask when buying a new boat.
  • Questions to ask when buying a used boat.
  • The differences between buying used vs. new, including information on brokers, aftermarket warranties, inspections and acceptance policies.
  • A used boat checklist to guide you through the process.

What to Expect

How do you plan to use it.

Defining your mission statement, or how you plan to use your watercraft, is the first step in the boat-buying process.

"People buy these types of products because they have a vision for what they want their leisure time to be,” says William Morong, CEO of Yachting Solutions. “This is a vehicle to help them get there.”

William Morong

First Hand Research First-time boat buyers tend to have preconceived notions about the boat they think they want and how they will use it. Before settling on a specific brand, model, size, or type of yacht , try to attend a few boat shows, view dealer demos, or go on a day charter to learn about the different boats available.

What Does Your Lifestyle Require? You should also consider important factors like:

  • Activities : The types of activities you enjoy, such as watersports, coastal cruising, or off-shore fishing.
  • Size of Your Group : How many passengers you plan to have on board, including you, your family, and any guests.
  • Space You Need : Which size range and boat length offers the space you need.
  • Amenities :What amenities will make trips more comfortable and enjoyable for you and your family.
  • Seasonality : What times of the year you plan to use the boat, and how long your voyages will last.
  • Storage : Boat storage options, including boatyard or marina storage, plus indoor vs. outdoor storage.
  • Transport : How you plan to transport the boat, whether via trailer or a certified marine transportation company.

Value of a Good Broker

Once you’ve fully defined your mission statement, talk to a dealer or broker. Sometimes, the boat you're envisioning isn't the one you need to achieve your yachting goals. Whether you’re buying used or new, brokers and dealers can guide you through the process of purchasing a luxury boat that you, your family, and your friends can all enjoy.

It's important to remember that buying your first yacht is the best way to learn if a particular vessel is right for you.

“When buying your first boat, you’re probably not buying your last. Be thoughtful about how you are going to use the boat but, at the same time, [you should] buy a boat, use it and see what you like and what you don’t like.”

Robert Chace, Sales Director at Yachting Solutions.

Contracts & Escrow

What's in a Contract? Sales contracts are legally binding, written agreements that outline all boat buying terms to protect the buyer's interest. Contracts spell out the buyer and seller’s obligations, a description of the boat, purchase price, deposits, boat condition, warranty, and the time frame of the sale.

Contingencies You should also include certain contingencies in your contract to ensure that the sale hinges on buyer satisfaction.

Good Faith Deposits Another important part of this purchase agreement is a good faith deposit. Boat buyers make this payment into an escrow account to show their commitment to purchasing their chosen watercraft. Good faith deposits protect the seller from having to pay more upon default of the sale and protect the buyer by ensuring that the boat cannot be sold to a higher bidder once their offer is accepted.

Deposits for Used Boats For used boat sales, you’ll give your broker 10% of the purchase price, which then goes into their escrow account. If the boat you want to buy is in storage, you can agree to an escrow holdback that will pay for any repair needs that you discover upon inspection once the boat is available. Be sure to specify the issues and maintenance costs you're willing to cover in your sales contract.

Down Payment

Whether you’re buying a used boat or a new boat, most lenders require a down payment between 10 and 20%, depending on the selling price of the boat. Make sure you have this down payment ready at closing. As with any loan, the higher down payment you make, the lower your monthly rate is likely to be.

Financing Options

Even if you have the cash to buy your boat now, financing has many benefits. You might be able to set sail in a more expensive dreamboat if you finance the vessel rather than buying it outright. Before purchasing a yacht, calculate the total price of the boat, maintenance, repairs, storage, insurance, and fuel. Financing can give you money to fall back on when covering these additional costs.

Lenders Financing a yacht is like getting a loan on a new car or signing up for a mortgage. Once you determine the yacht you want to buy and have the purchase price, you can choose a lender. Lenders consider your credit score, debt to income ratio, job stability, and net worth to determine whether you qualify for a loan.

Someone looking to finance a used or new boat can try:

  • Financing through a boat dealer
  • Taking out a bank loan
  • Getting a loan from a lender specializing in marine financing

Dealers & Loans Dealers have plenty of experience setting up boat loans and can offer guidance to make the process of buying your new boat as easy as possible. However, if buying a used boat, you might want to get a personal loan from your bank for potential tax benefits and a lower interest rate. Meanwhile, a marine lender could help you arrange a lower down payment or create a monthly payment plan.

Getting Boat Insurance

Insuring your boat protects your investment and offsets the risk of operating a boat to protect you and your loved ones in the event of a boating accident. Many banks and marinas place insurance requirements on both buying a boat and storing it. To verify the boat insurance requirements in your state, contact the state marine board. Your insurance policy may include:

What to Look for When Buying a Boat

According to Morong, “Buyers don’t always understand what’s involved in the process of the transaction.” This lack of understanding can result in some missteps and unwelcome surprises during the process of buying a boat.

Questions to Ask When Buying a New Boat Asking your dealer or broker the right questions can help you understand how to buy a boat and avoid making common mistakes.

There’s a wide variety of new boats on the market, some more complex than others. And while impulse buys can sometimes lead you to the vessel of your dreams, you should still consider asking questions about a new boat before you buy it.

The following list contains questions you should ask and what you need to know before buying a boat:

What to Ask About

Differences in buying used vs new.

“I find that new boat and used boat buyers are generally predetermined,” says Morong.

Some buyers want everything brand new, while others prefer paying a lower price for a used craft, vowing to fix it up, and never buying new again. In most cases, the decision between new vs. used depends on each boater's experience with the boat buying process.

According to Chace, first-time boat buyers should lean toward buying something as new as possible.

“You want to make your boating experience more enjoyable and as stress-free as possible,” he says.

A new boat is less likely to have the issues that often come with a pre-owned model. Also, buying a new boat ensures that the craft gets proper care and maintenance from the beginning.

Less Stress on the Water With new boats, there are usually no negative surprises. You don’t have immediate maintenance costs, newer designs are more efficient, and you can upgrade them to suit your unique style. On the other hand, used boats in good condition are lower-priced and offer a larger selection to choose from. Depending on what you're looking for, one may be a better option than the other.

Questions to Ask When Buying a Used Boat

Buying a pre-owned boat often involves more legwork than purchasing a brand new yacht. Make sure you’re working with a seller or broker who understands your needs and won't try to overcharge you or pressure you into choosing a new model that's outside of your price range.

When buying used, some questions you might want to ask include:

Using A Broker

When buying a used boat, it's a good idea to go through a broker. Brokers are sales consultants that work like real estate agents; only they’re more involved in making sure you buy the best boat for your lifestyle.

“What really makes the difference is finding a broker that you relate to and feel is knowledgeable enough to represent your interests,” says Morong.

Brokers work on commission, typically charging 10% of the sale price. To find your ideal yacht, a good broker will ask questions about what type of boating you enjoy and where you like to travel. They also negotiate prices and contracts and handle the sales process until closing. Find a Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB) online or ask for recommendations around a marina or boatyard.

Warranty Extensions on Used Boats

“New boats are brand new with a full factory warranty. You can feel comfortable buying the boat at its sales price. In a used transaction, it’s buyer beware,” says Morong.

Some warranties are only transferable to the second owner, who receives the remaining time on the original coverage plan. Unlike a car, only individual parts of the boat are under manufacturer warranty, not the entire vessel.

Aftermarket While the lifetime hull and deck warranties from most manufacturers are promising, these aren’t what typically fail, according to Morong. Plus, manufacturer warranties leave the boat owner with certain costs not covered under the contract. Therefore, you may want to consider aftermarket warranties when buying a used boat.

Extended warranties are available through third-party administrators that you can find through your broker or dealership. Aftermarket warranties are service contracts that provide peace of mind while cruising the coast, traveling long distances, or storing your yacht. Generally, they cover both the repair costs and the labor.

Surveyors and Inspections

Professional inspections are crucial when buying a home, and buying a used boat requires the same due diligence. Your broker usually provides a list of professional, certified boat surveyors that they've worked with before. However, it's up to you to compare rates for each surveyor and schedule an inspection.

Value of Surveyor A surveyor checks for issues with a vessel's water intrusion, electrical or plumbing, mechanical, and other related systems. Having the boat inspected protects buyers from discovering issues post-purchase that were undisclosed in the sales contract.

“It’s your job as the buyer to find out what’s wrong with that boat,” says Chace, “so you need to hire people to do that.”

When buying a used boat, you want to make the sales contract subject to a(n):

  • Mechanical Inspection
  • Engine Oil Samples
  • General Survey and Visual Inspection

It's important that the surveyor inspects the boat for specific damages as well as considering its overall condition. Some surveyors may lack the necessary certifications to inspect a particular engine or mechanical system, so you should consult the International Association of Marine Surveyors or the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors to find a professional with the skills you need.

Policies of Acceptance

With a new boat, the choice is simple: will you buy the boat or not? However, with used boats, there are two different kinds of acceptance in the brokerage world. After you receive the results of inspections and take the boat for a sea trial, you can decide whether to accept the boat as-is or under certain conditions.

Acceptance As-Is If you choose to accept the boat as is, it usually means that the inspection results were free of any major issues or repair needs. As such, you agree that you will not ask the seller to make any additional repairs or negotiate a new price.

Conditional Acceptance Those who are unhappy with the survey results may choose to accept the boat under the condition that the seller makes specific repairs or reduce the price to compensate for the issues found during the inspection. If you choose this option, you will have to renegotiate the terms of sale.

A potential buyer might decide not to buy a used boat if they cannot get the financing, feel uncomfortable about the survey results, or didn’t like how the boat felt during the sea trial. If you do not buy the boat, you'll receive a refund of your escrow money. However, you'll still need to cover the cost for the inspections, launching the boat for the trial, and docking it afterward.

Buying A Boat Checklist

Before buying a new boat, you'll want to be sure that it has all the amenities and features you're looking for. Make a list of everything you want, and let the dealer guide you through purchasing your new vessel. If you're in the market for a pre-owned craft, use this helpful checklist for buying a used boat to ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible.

Work with a Broker

Find a used boat for sale, make an offer and deposit, survey & inspection, accept or reject, storage & transportation, buying a yacht or boat you love.

Buying a boat is a lengthy ordeal and a huge financial commitment. However, it's also an investment toward fun family vacations, coastal cruises with friends, or relaxing solo fishing trips. While the process can seem arduous, many first-time boat buyers find that it's all been worth it once they “get out there and get on the water,” according to Chace.

Whether you're a first-time buyer or a returning customer, buying a boat is about following your vision and learning through trial and error what it takes to achieve it. Taking the boat buying process step-by-step with the right dealer or broker can help you find a yacht you love that will last you throughout all your waterborne journeys.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

attractions elektrostal photo

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrostal attractions photo with description

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

The art of command

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II in Oystersteel with an Oyster bracelet and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a blue Cerachrom insert .

Ring command bezel, a synchronized countdown.

Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.

As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

A characteristic aesthetic

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch.

A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand. The Yacht-Master II’s countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

Oystersteel

Highly resistant to corrosion

Rolex uses Oystersteel for its steel watch cases. Specially developed by the brand, Oystersteel belongs to the 904L steel family, alloys most commonly used in high-technology and in the aerospace and chemical industries, where maximum resistance to corrosion is essential.

Oystersteel is extremely resistant, offers an exceptional finish once polished and maintains its beauty even in the harshest environments.

The Oyster bracelet

Alchemy of form and function.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
