Mega Yachts Visit Nantucket Waters

The island is no stranger to some of the largest yachts in the world, and a pair of mega yachts visited the island this week including the 239-foot yacht "Podium," and the 187-foot yacht "Liberty."

"Podium" is worth $120 million and owned by Robert Penske, a former race car driver and the founder, chairman, and CEO of Penske Automotive Group. He has an estimated net worth of $1.1 billion.

The "Podium" was built by Feadship in the Netherlands in 2020 and can accommodate 12 guests in six cabins, along with 14 crew in 7 cabins. It is one of 110 motor yachts in the world that sits in the size range of in the 70-80m.

“Podium” is listed as the 248 th largest yacht in the world. Podium’s top speed is around 18 knots, or just under 21 miles per hour and the vessel’s cruising speed is 14 knots, or just over 16 mile per hour.

The vessel is powered by Caterpillar engines and has an annual running cost between $5-$10 million.

"Liberty" was built in 2012 and features interior styling by British designer Evan K. Marshall. The yacht is currently available for charter for up to 12 guests in six cabins.

Liberty also has three double cabins and one cabin that can operate as a twin or double. There are 6 beds in total, including 5 kings, 1 queen and 1 convertible. The vessel is also capable of carrying up to 14 crew onboard.

Liberty comfortably cruises at 16 knots and reaches a maximum speed of 21 knots with a range of up to 4,360 nautical miles from her 86,677 litre fuel tanks at 10 knots.

The vessel has various toys and amenities for its guest to use such as two Yamaha VX WaveRunners, a waterski, a seabob, wakeboards, kayaks, fishing equipment, and inflatable water toys. Liberty also features three tenders including a 7.01m/23' Novurania Tender.

New England is a year-round destination, offering winter sports from December through to February and sunbathing weather from June to December.

The coldest period lasts roughly three months from December through to March, when temperatures can dip to -3°C/26°F and reach a high of 7°C/45°F. November and March are the wettest months with around 3.9 inches of rainfall. In contrast, summer is a warm 18°C/65°F rising to 24°C/75°F and is the driest season.

Sea temperatures reach a high of 21.9°C/69.1°F in June and July, while the lowest temperatures of 2°C/37°F occur between January and March.

Clothing to Pack For Your Charter:

Nantucket has a casual but conservative style in town whereas the dress code is more relaxed on the beaches. Temperatures in the summer are comfortable but can feel on the cool side on windy days and after sundown: It is recommended to take a jumper or windproof layer for the evenings, and visitors might want to change between shorts for the beach and trousers when in town.

For the winter months, guests should layer up and have a waterproof outer layer, particularly when close to the water or heading to the snowy mountains for skiing and other winter sports.

Waterfront News: Megayachts arriving

( June 29, 2023 ) The first-quarter moon is visible this week and will continue to grow as the moon waxes toward the July 3 full “Buck” moon. The extreme high and low tides have left sandbars bare at times, and some boats touching bottom near the shoreline.

The water temperature in the harbor is nearing 70 degrees and the buzz on the inner-harbor stripers is now dwindling, as they head to slightly cooler waters. With hope, the dense fog that has surrounded us for a weekplus will soon dissipate to reveal the full moon’s shine during the late evenings.

Walking the waterline, you may stumble across beach peas this time of year, a native Nantucket wildflower that can survive in the harsh salty atmosphere of beach and dune environments. These pale purple petals can be found along the coastline of Coatue or while walking a trail to the water at Jetties Beach.

The view from Sandbar at Jetties never disappoints. It is like a runway for megayachts entering the harbor during the summertime. The procession is yet to begin, but there have been a few stray yachts at anchor and arriving in the harbor.

There is currently a 115-foot yacht called   B5   at anchor outside the west jetty. A few  larger yachts have already docked at the Boat Basin, including   Sea Nash  last weekend. While disembarking the Boat Basin the 50 (150-foot) Westport backed over a neighboring vessel’s anchor chain, wrapping the chain around its prop half a dozen times.

Unable to maneuver under propulsion,   Sea Nash  shuffled over to the town pier, where she lay until a professional diver could unwrap the chain with an underwater hydraulic saw.

Due to the extreme circumstances and environmental factors, the town pier was able to act as a temporary safe haven for   Sea Nash ,  for the protection and safety of the vessel, all surrounding vessels and the professional divers. Sights like this will not become common at the town pier in the future.”

Summer is already sailing along, and Monday the Jetties Sailing Center opened for the season. On the harbor side of Jetties Beach, there is something for everyone from the tiniest salt to the retiring old salt, including toddlers, youths and teens in between. Tiny Salts classes are offered to children ages 2 through 4 years, to introduce the youngest mariners to sailing the seashore. The tiniest can jump off boats, sing songs  and learn sailing terms.

Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are always available, and depending on one’s level of skill, there are a variety of sailboats to rent. Rhodes 19 sailboats are known to be ideal family day-sailors, also built for racing and to withstand heavy weather. There are also 420 sailing dinghies and Marshall Cat 15s. The 420s are popular for teaching and racing, and the Marshall Cat is a perfect way to explore the harbor off Hulbert Avenue.

Renters cannot cross the channel to Coatue, but can take a leisurely sail, cruise or paddle to Brant Point Light. Boats can be rented daily by the hour or through annual memberships. Nantucket Community Sailing oversees the operations at the Jetties Sailing Center and lists all of the information online.

Sailing the sandbars off Jetties Beach is a pristine way to view the clear waters of the outer harbor and the abundant life that exists below. Regardless of being a day-tripper, summer local or full-time, year-round resident, there is something for everyone, and a day on the water is always better than a day at work.

One- boston to maine.

Easy travel to Boston allows you flexibility in arrival. On the first day you could meet your charter yacht downtown; or perhaps boarding your luxury yacht charter would be savored better with a view of the USS Constitution?

Day two might find you on a short passage to Marblehead with its narrow streets echoing a seafaring heritage, or perhaps you'd prefer Salem for some witch hunting!

Day three could mix art and fishing with a visit to Gloucester, home of the fishing fleets made famous in The Perfect Storm as well as a budding artist community.

Day four might see your arrival by motor into Portland, Maine, the southern gateway to Casco Bay. Your yacht charter captain will be sure to point you to the best watering holes in Portland's wonderful restored downtown.

Day five could include a short cruise exploring Casco Bay, or a trip across its mouth to Boothbay, where the local "Lobsta" co-op will be your target for the best of Down East shellfish.

TWO - Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Newport

Arriving in Boston, your motor yacht charter awaits to take you out past the center of this historic city to Provincetown, first landing place of the Pilgrims in 1620.

Day two can be spent exploring Provincetown's vibrant harbor and the nearby coastal towns.

Day three takes you through the narrow Cape Cod Canal into Buzzards Bay and on to Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard.

Day four the charter yacht's launch takes you into town, perhaps to explore the island by bike or merely to browse the abundance of shops along the streets of Edgartown and Vineyard Haven.

Day five sees your charter yacht arrive in Nantucket, rich in whaling history and now a calmer "out island" to be explored by bike. The numerous small galleries display rich local artwork, and the streets are lined with restored captains' houses from whaling times.

Day six you'll want to spend further exploring Nantucket before you depart towards Newport. Perhaps your charter yacht captain will suggest a quiet anchorage for the night off sleepy Cuttyhunk.

Day seven sees you docked in Newport, Rhode Island, where you can tour restored mansions, walk shop-lined wharves, and take in the harbor scene from a dockside restaurant (or consider a detour to Watch Hill) before your car delivers you to Providence Airport.

Day 1 - Newport Rhode Island

Embark your luxury crewed motor yacht in Newport - the 'city by the sea'. Day 2 - Block Island

After breakfast on the deck, begin the day with a cruise through Newport Harbor out to Block Island, just 23 miles off the Rhode Island coast. Block island is funky, eclectic and relaxed. You will find no franchises or fast food outlets on Block Island, instead, you will find well-preserved Victorian houses and understated New England architecture. This is the perfect stop to get to understand the timeless beauty, beaches, and historical seafaring culture that is New England. You can explore the island by bike, as there are several bike rental areas near the harbour.

Day 3 and 4 - Nantucket

From Block Island, cruise to the historic New England whaling island of Nantucket, now the playground of billionaires. Nantucket, covered with dunes, seagrass and weathered cedar-shingled houses, is picturesque, charming and quietly elegant. You can tour the Whaling Museum which chronicles the importance of Nantucket as the capital of the U.S. whaling industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. You might want to take the yacht’s dinghy to take you to explore the inner harbour or over to the Wauwinet Inn for a drink on the veranda. You’ll want to spend two nights in Nantucket as there is so much to do: you can visit the Cranberry Bogs, stroll the cobblestone streets or bike along the sandy beaches. Don’t miss an evening cocktail at the famous Club Car, a Pullman coach which sits at the site of the former train station.

Day 5 - Martha's Vineyard

It’s a short sail from Nantucket to Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard - the storied island just south of the Cape that several presidents, including Kennedy, Clinton, Obama and Roosevelt, as well as celebrities, artists and writers have vacationed on for years. Edgartown is the oldest and wealthiest town on "the Vineyard". Yachts belonging to the rich and famous are moored here during the season, making for an impressive waterfront.

Edgartown has a picturesque lighthouse entrance, charming town and nearby sandy beach. Tour the island, do a little hiking, explore the galleries and shops - the Vineyard has it's own, timeless, decidedly "preppy" culture. The Vineyard beaches are excellent - you can take the "Chappy Ferry" across to Chappaquiddick Island, or you can venture further to Gay Head to see the colourful, sandy cliffs above a perfect sandy beach. There is good fishing for flounder in the Sound so make sure you drop a line. You may also want to play a round of golf at Farm Neck Golf Club, Presidents Clinton and Obama found the time!

Day 6 - Boston

This is a fun cruising day, gliding past the Elizabeth Islands and then motoring through the Cape Cod Canal to Boston for a cruise into Boston Harbor. Tie up for the night and choose from an unlimited list of things to do including the Boston Aquarium, USS Constitution, Freedom Trail, Boston Commons, Fanueil Hall or riding the Swan Boats in the Gardens. A luxury yacht charter in Boston also offers you Irish Pubs, great Italian Food, and all types of Sea Food.

Day 7 - Provincetown, Cape Cod

From Boston, cruise over to the tip of Cape Cod to visit funky and picturesque Provincetown. Tilman Fertitta Gets a New $150 Million Super Yacht — Take a Look at the Floating Paradise

Houston billionaire adds boardwalk to his empire.

I n the stratospheric world of billionaire Tilman Fertitta, more is more. And bigger is better. Consider the hospitality mogul’s ever-expanding business empire and then add his newest toy —  a superyacht set to splash through the waters of the Med in April.

Our curiosity was piqued when we saw info on a 77 meter (252 foot) Feadship yacht that “was commissioned by an experienced yachtsman, the project has been designed by De Voogt Naval Architects,” according to Boat International . The extraordinary yacht’s launch has additionally captured the attention of Super Yacht Times , Mega Yacht News , and  Yacht Harbor .

The name of the floating behemoth: Boardwalk . The same name as Fertitta’s 50 meter (163 feet) Westport motor yacht that has ridden the Fertitta family across waves of the Mediterranean and the Caribbean for a decade.

A little more research reveals that indeed the new vessel, which is headed this month for sea trials, was commissioned by Fertitta in 2016. Four years is fairly standard for yacht construction from the hull up. It was launched from the Feadship’s Aalsmeer shipyard in The Netherlands and in early January.

With an estimated price tag of $150 million, the yacht has seven staterooms, a swimming pool, and, of course, a helipad accommodating Fertitta’s favored mode of travel.

The original Boardwalk remains in Fertitta’s possession and there is no indication that he will sell or charter it. As he has often said, he has no intention of letting anyone but family rest their heads on Boardwalk pillows. Block Island

Approximately 20 percent of the island is set aside for conservation. Visit the Mohegan Bluffs, just walking distance from the Southeast Lighthouse. The bluffs are the site of a pre-colonial battle between the invading Mohegan, and the native Niantic in which the Mohegan were driven off the edge of the tall cliffs to their deaths on the beach below. A long staircase of over one hundred steps leads to the bottom of these clay cliffs and looks out over the Atlantic. A visit to Block Island is not complete without a stop for a bowl of New England Clam Chowder at the National Hotel.
