Maple Leaf 50 Review

Does anyone know a web site that I might go to find a review of the Maple Leaf 50. The Maple Leaf line was built by Forbes Cooper bach in the 70's and 80's in BC. I believe it was designed by Stan Hungtington. I am hoping someone might direct me to a old publication that I might read a review on. I have tried googling it but have come up dry on the Maple Leaf 50. A old crusier or sailing magaizine article is what I am looking for. Thanks Dennis

The Maple Leaf is indeed very popular here in BC, but I've never heard of a 50 - most are 48, some 42. Maybe if you tried looking for a Maple Leaf 48? I feel your pain - VERY little information about a Crown 28 (also built here in Vancouver) either! druid

Ed Schenck

There are a couple of 48s on YachtWorld. And I read some pretty good comments regarding the 42s and 48s. But nothing about 50s. I think that I read about a cored hull. I guess that's OK but I would want a really good surveyor

Maple Leaf 50 I have looked at 2 Maple Leaf 50's now just trying to find some additional information Dennis

Looking for some general opinions on the Maple Leaf 42. Looks like it would make a great liveaboard, but can it sail well too?

maple leaf 48 sailboat review

The Maple Leaf 42 is a very roomy, comfortable liveaboard, several examples of which have proven themselves offshore. I believe they were also built by Cooper Yachts, by the way, so quality is probably on a par with what you saw in the Cooper 416. I don't know off-hand if they are cored hulls as well..... Again, old PY back issues/website should provide some info, and there may be more of them around than the Coopers as far as hooking up with current owners for background info and experience. The major decision for you here is whether or not you buy into the center-cockpit idea. Visibility issues are much better than the Cooper motorsailers. ML 42s do have a walkthru to the aft cabin, so there's no need to go through the cockpit for that. Lots of engine room space (it's an actual engine"room") so good access there. I think there was a measure of customization available so you may find varying layouts, and they were also available as hull-and-deck kits, so some may be owner-completed - that could be good or bad, of course. The other Cooper line is the Banners - they used the Cooper hulls in a more conventional trunk cabin-aft cockpit deck plan. Good hunting!

Thanks Faster, The Maple Leaf does look like a nice, comfy boat. Finding moorage is still a hassle though. At this point I'm considering just buying a recreation sailboat - 30 ft - and giving up any plans of living a board.

Maple Leaf 42

Maple Leaf 42 is a 41 ′ 11 ″ / 12.8 m monohull sailboat designed by Stan Huntingford and built by Cooper Enterprises Inc. starting in 1976.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

  3. Maple Leaf 48 Advice

Re: Maple Leaf 48 Advice. The Maple Leaf line was not known as a high quality build at a high quality price. That said they did offer a very large living area which made it very attractive as a live aboard.

Nice looking boat , best of luck with her. The K/C is a obviously a compromise.
