Leonardo DiCaprio Seen Living It Up with Friends on a Yacht in St. Bart's During New Year's Vacation

Leonardo DiCaprio is ringing in the New Year overseas.

The Oscar winner was spotted on a yacht off the island of Saint Barthélemy onMonday, surrounded by friends.

In photos taken of the Caribbean excursion, a shirtless DiCaprio, 48, is seen taking in the sights from onboard the vessel alongside four other individuals.

After DiCaprio parted ways with ex-girlfriend Camila Morrone in August after more than four years together, the actor was seen spending time with Gigi Hadid .

In September, a source told PEOPLE that DiCaprio "is taken with Gigi." They explained that the supermodel, 27, "is the type of woman he is usually attracted to" and said that "they sort of run in the same high-profile circles and would see each other at events , clubs, restaurants and gatherings."

DiCaprio and Hadid were last seen together in New York City in November, when they were spotted leaving the same restaurant .

Late last month, DiCaprio and actress Victoria Lamas were seen leaving The Birds Streets Club on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California, separately, before they entered a car together.

A source told PEOPLE they were leaving a "big group dinner," adding, "They were also joined by a number of other people in the car."

After the Titanic actor was spotted with the 23-year-old actress in late December, her dad, Lorenzo Lamas , told the New York Post that she is "very smitten."

Lorenzo, 64, added of his daughter and DiCaprio, "I know she likes him very much. I think they met last month. I'm not sure of the circumstances, but that's what she told me."

He also noted that he offered Victoria some fatherly advice.

"I told her to treat the relationship like a holiday — just enjoy it as much as you can for as long as it lasts," Lorenzo said. "And if it lasts for more than a typical holiday, great. But if not, then just guard your heart, you know? Because she's very young."

According to Lorenzo, however, things between the pair are not serious .

He expressed to the Post , "She's fond of him, obviously. But they're not dating, and she does not want that out there because that would be really bad. It'd be embarrassing for her if he should happen to read something that said that they're dating and they're not."

Leonardo DiCaprio enjoyed his New Year’s Eve on a yacht in St. Barts alongside his A-list buddies and a slew of models. The Oscar winner, 48, was spotted hanging out in the gorgeous waters with his BFF Tobey Maguire , Drake and one of the cover girls, Madison Headrick , who is Leo’s friend Joe Nahmad’s fianceé. Leonardo kept a low-key figure in a baseball hat and tee while he lunched next to Madison, who also rocked a baseball cap, plus a striped bikini top, as seen in photos here from DailyMail .

The yacht party comes after Leo was spotted with Victoria Lamas recently over the holidays. Last week, they were seen exiting celeb hotspot The Birds Street Club in West Hollywood and getting into a car together. Of course, the sightings have speculated romance rumors, which comes shortly after the rumors of Leo and Gigi Hadid being an item , after the pair were seen  leaving the same New York restaurant  on Nov. 18.

While many believe the NYE holiday should be celebrated with a someone to kiss at midnight, Leo’s NYE spent without Gigi certainly raised a few eyebrows. However, a source EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife that the actor and the supermodel are just “casually dating” and nothing has changed between them. “Leo is single.  Nothing has changed with  Gigi . They are casually seeing each other but there is nothing serious going on between them at all,” an insider close to Leo revealed.

Another source added EXCLUSIVELY that ” Gigi knows that Leo and Victoria were out with a bunch of friends which, of course, is completely fine with her.” The insider continued, “Although this wasn’t a romantic outing, Gigi has no opinion one way or another even if Leo does decide he wants to date other people. Her and Leo were never in a serious relationship to begin with, and they had no commitments to each other.”

Recently, DiCaprio, 48, sparked romance rumors with actor Lorenzo Lamas' 23-year-old daughter Victoria Lamas.

"I know she likes him very much," Lorenzo told the New York Post . "I think they met last month. I’m not sure of the circumstances, but that’s what she told me."

DiCaprio became a single man once again in August after ending a four-year relationship with actress Camila Morrone . Victoria and DiCaprio were spotted leaving a Hollywood hotspot together on Dec. 20.

"She’s very smitten," Lorenzo said. "I told her to treat the relationship like a holiday – just enjoy it as much as you can for as long as it lasts. And if it lasts for more than a typical holiday, great. But if not, then just guard your heart, you know? Because she’s very young."

The "Renegade" actor joked, "I just told her, you know, absolutely no transatlantic cruises with Leo. Anyway, I’m excited for her. I know that it’s been a while since she’s had a serious relationship.… She’s got a big heart, and she tends to give it freely."

Victoria is one of Lamas' three daughters with ex-wife, Playboy playmate Shauna Sand. The couple divorced in 2002.

DiCaprio has also been linked to model Gigi Hadid since he ended his relationship with Morrone.

Morrone previously opened up about the age difference between her and DiCaprio during an interview in 2019.

"There’s so many relationships in Hollywood – and in the history of the world – where people have large age gaps," the actress told the Los Angeles Times. "I just think anyone should be able to date who they want to date."

Leonardo DiCaprio was photographed enjoying some quality time with his family while vacationing along the Italian coast on Monday.

He was joined by niece Normandie, father George DiCaprio and stepmother Peggy Ann Farrar for the second leg of his lavish European vacation along the Amalfi coast — just one week after hosting a flock of his famous friends and models.

The Hollywood heavyweight, 48, showed off his sun-kissed physique in a pair of electric blue swim trunks and gold chain necklace while soaking up the sun.

After getting some much-needed rest on board, DiCaprio decided to take a dip in the seemingly cold water.

The Oscar winner was joined by his teenage niece as the pair leaped off the ship and into the crystal-clear water.

After a fun-filled morning, the group then took an excursion to the Blue Grotto sea caves in Capri.

Despite trying to stay under the radar in a baseball hat and mask, DiCaprio cuddled up to his niece as the family entered the caves.

The “Wolf of Wallstreet” star has been in full relaxation mode over the last couple of weeks after attending the Cannes Film Festival at the end of May.

After leaving the French festival, DiCaprio made his way to Sardinia, Italy to celebrate the nuptials of billionaire art-world heir Joe Nahmad and model Madison Headrick.

Following the star-studded ceremony, the actor was spotted out in London with a group of pals — including model Neelam Gill — as well as his mom, Irmelin Indenbirken. DiCaprio has been spotted with Gill in the past but sources tell Page Six that the British beauty is actually dating one of his friends.

One week later, the actor was then seen arriving at yet another London hotspot just moments before his ex Gigi Hadid entered the same establishment.

While the “Titanic” star was joined by his father and stepmother, it’s unclear whether or not Hadid dined with them once inside.

The pair were first linked last fall, but things seemingly fizzled out  by December 2022 due to their busy schedules.

However, the pair sparked reconciliation rumors last month after they were both spotted leaving Cipriani Downtown in New York City just minutes after one another.

Leonardo DiCaprio was seen enjoying a glamorous holiday in the Carribean onboard a yacht with a mystery woman.

The 48-year-old, who sported a pair of blue swimming drunks as he made the most of the sunshine, on the luxury ship, which was traveling around celeb fave, St Barts.

Among The Wolf of Wall Street star’s cohort was a woman whose identity is unknown, although she chatted along happily to the actor while wearing a light blue floral bikini.

His pal Joe Nahmad and his fiancée Madison Headrick, who wore a purple two-piece, were also spotted on the deck of the mega yacht, looking as though they were contemplating a dip in the deep blue sea.

The Don’t Look Up star is currently thought to be single after sparking rumours he was dating 23-year-old actress Victoria Lamas, when they were spotted together in a car in December.

While they left LA hotspot The Birds Street Club separately, the duo were photographed jumping into the same vehicle after the party had ended, although it’s understood they are just pals.

The photos came after many speculated the actor was keen on the model and mother-of-one Gigi. 

Heads turned after the duo were papped in September amid chatter Gigi would be the first  woman  over the age of 25 the star had romantically been attached to – as well as the first mother. 

Sources close to the couple at the time offered updates on the status of the new romance, sharing they were dating but ‘taking it slow,’ according to Page Six. 

They went on to detail the couple’s outings earlier this year, confirming they had been alone and also socialised with groups but are not labelling themselves as ‘exclusive’ yet.

Leo’s most recent official relationship was with Death Wish actress Camila Morrone, but following five years of dating they split at the end of last year shortly after she turned 25.

An insider claimed at the time: ‘Leo and Camila ended their relationship over the summer.’

‘There are no bad feelings between them,’ they added to  the Sun . ‘It just came to a natural conclusion.’

The Oscar winner was first linked to the model, stepdaughter of Al Pacino, in 2017, when they both hit up Cannes Film Festival.

It wasn’t until the following February that they attended their first event as a couple, celebrating Ellen DeGeneres’ 60th birthday party alongside a string of famous faces.

Camila previously made headlines when she hit back at the speculation surrounding their private lives, slamming those who quizzed their two-decade age-gap.

‘There’s so many relationships in Hollywood — and in the history of the world — where people have large age gaps,’ she said in a chat with the Los Angeles Times.

‘I just think anyone should be able to date who they want to date.’

I Salute Leonardo DiCaprio and His Massive Yacht

The man is having the summer holiday of our dreams

There are two things about Leonardo DiCaprio that I know will always be true: 1/ He’s a man of leisure, and 2/ He's a man of luxury. When DiCaprio not starring in a blockbuster, or dating a young model, the 48-year-old actor can often be found unwinding in a wildly glamorous manner.

This week, he did exactly that, while cruising around the Amalfi coast in his private yacht. DiCaprio invited his dad, stepmum, and niece along for the ride. Some may find that excessive! They might wonder, Why charter a big-ass boat for just four people? Wouldn’t a smaller ship be easier to manage? I think the answer is pretty simple: Because it's fun! And Leonardo DiCaprio has yacht money! I’d do the same. Wouldn’t you?

The actor's upcoming movie is based on David Grann’s popular nonfiction book, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI . DiCaprio stars in the project alongside Robert DeNiro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, and Lily Gladstone. The crime drama follows a series of murders that affect the indigenous Osage Nation after oil is found on their land. When more and more people go missing, the FBI swoops in to investigate.

Killers of the Flower Moon will premiere in theatres on 2 October. That gives good ol’ Leo at least a few more months to relax before hopping back into movie-star mode. I, for one, can’t wait to see what he does next.

Leonardo DiCaprio has come under heavy fire after an 18-year-old girl discussed her experience partying with him on his yacht.

DiCaprio, who has a notorious reputation for being romantically involved with women under the age of 25 , recently made headlines for his extravagant New Year's Eve party on his yacht in St. Barts.

One of the attendees at the notorious party, Kornelia Ski, 18, took to her TikTok and shared how she scored an invite from her "friend" DiCaprio.

An 18-year-old girl discussed her experience partying with her 'friend' Leonardo DiCaprio on his yacht.

In the TikTok video, Ski explains that she'd recently gotten home from St. Barts where DiCaprio's yacht party had been held.

"Let me tell you guys what I did for New Year's," Ski excitedly tells the camera while doing her makeup.

She explains that she and some of her friends had gotten invited to an afterparty on the Vava, which is the name of the $150 million superyacht which is famously chartered by DiCaprio.

Ski continued, saying that she'd been wearing a wristband and was "on the list" for the party, but had "to stand on the line" because security refused to let anyone else onto the boat.

The 18-year-old influencer eventually made it onto the yacht after one of her "good friends" pulled some strings and granted her access.

After getting on the boat, Ski described talking with A-list celebrities who were at the New Year's party, including Drake.

At one point, Ski recalled having trouble finding a bathroom that didn't have a colossally long line of people waiting.

She revealed that "the same friend who got me on [the boat] was actually also staying on the boat, so he let us use his bathroom."

Despite attendees not being able to take photos, Ski shared that she sneakily snuck a video while in "Leo's bathroom."

Users criticized DiCaprio for partying with a significantly younger woman.

The video, which was shared on Reddit , elicited strong reactions from users, who were shocked that DiCaprio would befriend a teenage girl.

"Sounds like a sketchy situation," one user wrote. 

"Young woman with limited life experience, older men with money and experience, 1 am, no photos or video, on a private vessel in international waters."

Another user pointed out that "it's the power dynamics" that are worrying, especially considering the massive age gap between Ski and DiCaprio.

"One thing I do know about working with men with money is they don’t want women around that can say no to them most of the time hence the boys club of corporate politics."

The 40-year-old Lothario is currently living it up on the Caribbean island of St Barts on a luxury yacht which costs an eye-watering $410,000 a week to hire.

Admittedly, it's just a drop in the ocean for party prince Leo - who is worth $220m. 

After his recent split from his on-off model girlfriend Toni Garrn, the Wolf Of Wall Street actor is enjoying company from a gaggle of stunning women who are staying with him on the yacht.

In recent days he has been spotted frolicking on the beach with them, as well as taking them all shopping in the local town to buy swimsuits.

It's like the New Year celebrations never ended because retail therapy and beach parties are just the start of it.

Indeed Leo's mega boat is just as stunning as the company he is keeping.

Called the Paraffin, the super ship is currently up for sale for $42m; at 197ft, it is a quarter of the length of the Titanic (882ft) but what it lacks in length it certainly makes up for in luxury.

The three-tier vessel sleeps 12 guests and comes complete with six staterooms, with enough space to house 17 crew members. Facilities include a jacuzzi, swimming platform and gym.

It's also the attention to detail on the design front that separates this yacht from the pack. 

In the master closet, for instance, there are light fittings in the drawers - just in case Leo found rummaging around for his underwear in the dark too much of a task.

While most celebs might make do with a trip to Hawaii or Aspen to mark the New Year, Leo is in a class of the super rich and powerful in St Barts.

It's a playground of billionaires where the sickeningly wealthy go to spend their pocket money - and literally drown in luxury beyond compare.

Others enjoying the salubrious surrounds of St Barts include Salma Hayek and her billionaire husband Francois-Henri Pinault. A few days ago they were spotted on the Mia Elise, which charters for $300,000 a week.

On New Year's Eve Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's monstrous yacht - the Eclipse - was also seen sailing around the coast.

At 536ft long, Eclipse is the world's second largest private yacht, only surpassed by the recently launched Azzam in April 2013 which is 57ft longer.

Leo's New Year celebration, meanwhile, ended a relatively quiet year for the actor, who has not appeared on-screen since 2013's The Wolf Of Wall Street.

The five times an Oscar nominee has several upcoming film projects, including The Revenant and Mean Business On North Ganson Street, both tentatively scheduled for 2016.

Learn About Leonard DiCaprio's Yacht: Topaz

When you think about Leonardo DiCaprio, images of an eco-conscious crusader who is out to improve the health of the planet may first emerge. Recent rumors that Leo plans to attend the 2018 World Cup events in Brazil aboard a yacht seem a bit contradictory because of the pollution that these floating luxury hotels churn into the air and water.

While some have criticized him for indulging in a bit of heaven at the expense of the planet, if he wasn't doing it, somebody else would be. At least he's making an attempt to help the situation when he can. All of that aside, we were curious to find out more about Leonardo DiCaprio's Yacht, and here is what we discovered.

Leo doesn't own the yacht

DiCaprio hasn't actually purchased a yacht. Instead, he rented it from owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Mansour is a billionaire politician who is the current prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.

The mega yacht was custom built according to his grand and luxurious specifications and named the Topaz. Until recently, the interior of the yacht has remained a well-guarded secret. We've learned some juicy tidbits that we're happy to share.

Specifications of the Topaz

The super yacht measures a total of 453 feet in length with a cost of more than $200 million in USD to build and an estimated value of $678 million. This isn't the biggest yacht that Mr. DiCaprio has chartered, but it's likely to be one of the most luxurious.

The yacht is powered by four M90 diesel engines which generate approximately 48,000 horse power. The ship made its maiden launch in 2012 and according to sources, DiCaprio also rented it in 2014 just 2 years into its service run.

The Topaz is rumored to be one of the most extravagant yachts in the world . It offers smooth sailing with the installation of zero speed stabilizers. It comes fully outfitted with lifts that ferry guests comfortably among the eight deck levels to the host of amenities that are scattered throughout the massive vessel.

It is decked out in full luxury and comfort with a cinema, two hot tubs, air conditioning throughout, three swimming pools, a fitness hall, underwater lights, an ample sized conference room and a well hidden interior design that is left up to our imaginations.

Leo won't be making the trip alone. We've learned that he has a list of guests that will accompany him on thee yacht as he enjoys the football tournament in Brazil.

There were 21 of his friends, all of millionaire status mind you, invited to enjoy the amenities. It's been reported that DiCaprio and his pals hopped a jet and flew to Rio de Janeiro to arrive one day prior to kick off of the Brazil World cup.

The controversy the rental has stirred

While some are happy that Leo had a nice luxury vacation , others are upset about the seeming nose thumb to environmentalists who think his actions are careless.

There has been a degree of judgment and sentiments of disappointment to outright damnation sent his way. Activists point out that Leo's private jet that made thee 8000 mile trip left a hefty carbon footprint. This is besides the emissions put out from the luxury mega yacht. They're citing his actions as not being environmentally responsible.

Why the uproar?

The backlash has come after the fact that DiCaprio made a plea to viewers to work with one another to help fight climate change when he accepted his first ever Oscar award. DiCaprio's involvement in Hollywood environmentalism can't be denied.

He dedicates time to fly here and there to pick up awards for his contributions to help clean up the environment, but when he flies to and fro, his carbon footprint grows.

There has been a volley of insults and comments disapproving of Leo's actions, but isn't this how Hollywood environmentalism works? It's kinda tough to get to Brazil without flying or chartering a boat to take you there.

It's a drama that has been ongoing since Leo's plans were first revealed but it seems that he could at least score a few points for encouraging us all to make some kind of effort.

It's not easy being the center of attention and there are times when best intentions draw a backlash of negativism, despite the fact that most of us rely on some type of carbon emitting transportation resources.

The party commenced with a dinner at Akiva's, then at around 1:30 a.m, it moved to Swiss billionaire Bertarelli's $150 million, 315-foot yacht, Vava II.

The ritzy island was a place to be on New Year’s Eve. A-listers including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeff Bezos, Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra, Dua Lipa, and Drake partied at the new year bash of club king Richie Akiva, Ernesto Bertarelli, and Darren Dzienciol. Around 500 guests made the cut and were invited to the lavish party. According to a Page Six report, the party commenced with a dinner at Akiva’s, then at around 1:30 a.m, it moved to Swiss billionaire Bertarelli’s $150 million 315-foot yacht, Vava II. It is said that the party went on till 9 or 10 in the morning.

The stars were treated with a performance by rapper Meek Mill and Lil Baby. During Mill’s performance, Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin and internet star Jake Paul turned DJs for the night. Meek Mill is reportedly staying on Rubin’s yacht while in town.

Bezos, who posted a pic of himself with partner Lauren Sanchez, came in late following another bash. In the viral pictures, the Amazon founder was seen wearing heart-shaped sunglasses and a colourful button-down.

Sharing some glimpses from the party on Instagram, he urged his followers to "celebrate and grow". “We had so much fun last night celebrating with a crazy disco party with family, but the new year is also a great time to take stock and focus on personal growth, renewal, rebirth, and paying careful attention to each moment of your life,” he said in the caption of the post.

Analysis Leonardo DiCaprio Instagram post highlights Queensland land clearing data discrepancies

Leading man Leonardo DiCaprio's Instagram reads like a listicle of prominent conservation issues.

It features stunning wildlife photographs captioned with facts and figures, with the occasional scene from his movies peppered into the grid.

The Hollywood heavyweight has been an avid conservationist for years, and more recently has shone his powerful spotlight on Queensland's beef industry in an Instagram post.

DiCaprio shared findings reported in The Guardian that criticised the National Greenhouse Accounts (NGA) of majorly under reporting deforestation in the sunshine state, stating the bulk of it was from Queensland's beef industry.

Criticisms of the methodology used by the federal government to measure emissions and carbon capture have been levelled by conservationists before.

NGA keeps track of greenhouse gas emissions and progress towards Australia's emissions reduction targets including deforestation emissions.

Its figures are vital beyond reporting on habitat loss that could lead to the animal extinctions DiCaprio discussed.

Landholders running carbon capture projects rely on them to accurately measure their progress.

Millions of dollars have been invested in emissions reductions programs and carbon farming schemes to hit the red meat industry's target of net zero emissions by 2030 – set by research and development body Meat and Livestock Australia.

The numbers also impact how Australia is seen on the world stage.

In 2022, the federal government legislated greenhouse gas emission reduction targets to reach net zero by 2050.

The targets may not be met if figures are being low-balled.

Comparing apples to oranges

The information quoted by DiCaprio was from University of Queensland adjunct lecturer Martin Taylor's latest technical report comparing NGA with the Queensland Statewide Landcover and Trees Study (SLATS).

SLATS is a report commissioned by the state government to map the extent of land clearing each year.

NGA and SLATS use satellite imagery to monitor land clearing but they use different satellites and different definitions.

The SLATS definitions are broader.

What it considers to be land clearing is not always reflected in the NGA report.

It makes the systems hard to compare but Dr Taylor put them on the same footing by isolating the land clearing that met the NGA criteria.

Using satellite pictures, he compared the specific land areas where one system reported deforestation, but the other didn't.

"I thought, well, who's wrong here? Somebody's got to be wrong," he said.

His work showed the SLATS report was more accurate at detecting where clearing had occurred.

While both systems used artificial intelligence to analyse satellite images, Dr Taylor said the automated detections in SLATS were further checked by people, making them more reliable.

"There's eyes looking at all the areas," he said.

Dr Taylor added several caveats to his report including that no attempt was made to validate the results with field visits.

It means there still could be variations between his analysis and what is happening on the ground.

He also noted there were inevitable pixelation errors in mapping and the work and findings had not been reviewed by other experts.

While the red meat industry also recognises the differing figures; AgForce chief executive Michael Guerin said there was more to the picture.

He said the SLATS report did not recognise regrowth — cleared areas that had grown back and were cleared again — and as such, the industry puts more weight on the NGA figures.

"What is described overseas as deforestation in Queensland [is] dealing with secondary regrowth," he said.

"Which is really important in terms of managing woody weeds."

So what looks like deforestation to Leonardo DiCaprio could be considered weed control by beef producers.

The NGA figures also put the red meat industry in a better position to meet its own net-zero targets.

What can they agree on?

Everyone can agree on one thing — they need to reach a consensus and stick to it.

"Where we, I think, all agree as a broader community is we need to know and understand exactly what's going on," Mr Guerin said.

"So we can be confident in what we've got and what the next steps are."

The question remains how they get there if federal and state governments do not agree on a methodology to measure the problem.

Dr Taylor said it needed to be a priority for both governments to get the data lining up.

"If that's wrong and they're low-balling emissions reporting, then that's a serious credibility problem for the national government," he said.

"I encourage them to do their own analysis and look for what the source of error is and try and correct it."

No comparison

A Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water spokesperson said the two sets of data from NGA and SLATS couldn't be compared.

"They are developed for different purposes and apply different definitions, data sources and methods," they said.

The SLATS report determines how much land is being cleared in Queensland to make sure landholders are following the law.

Meanwhile, NGA is used to meet UN guidelines for reporting emissions including from deforestation.

Mr Guerin said he wanted industry, conservationists and the government to agree on a baseline figure using the data and mapping available.

"There can only be one set of data," he said.

"Let's get away from this debate of whose facts are correct."

The spokesperson said the department was working to improve the methods used to estimate emissions for the NGA.

"To ensure they remain based on the latest available research, science and data," they said.

This includes looking at adopting the higher-resolution Sentinel-2 satellite imagery which the state government uses for its SLATS reports.

DiCaprio may not have realised the can of worms he was opening by wading into the deforestation debate in Queensland.

But with net zero emissions deadlines looming and millions of dollars on the line it's more important than ever for all parties to come to table.

Leonardo DiCaprio  opted out of the 2024 Academy Awards . After fans noticed that the 49-year-old Killers of the Flower Moon   actor didn't appear to be at the ceremony, ET has learned that he did not attend Sunday's show.

While always supportive of the big night and his nominated film, Killers of the Flower Moon , he was filming -- in production -- on his new Paul Thomas Anderson movie at the time of the show, ET has learned.

DiCaprio was widely considered snubbed when he didn't land a nomination for Best Actor for his role of Ernest Burkhart in  Killers of the Flower Moon . Instead, Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti, Cillian Murphy, Jeffrey Wright  were nominated , with the Oppenheimer  star coming away victorious .

While DiCaprio wasn't recognized for his work in Martin Scorsese's film,  Killers of the Flower Moon  did earn 10 nods. Among those was DiCaprio's co-star, Lily Gladstone , who  was nominated for Best Actress. That award ultimately went to  Poor Things  star Emma Stone. 

Despite earning the third most nominations of any film,  Killers of the Flower Moon  ended Oscars night without nabbing any awards.

When ET spoke to DiCaprio at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala in January, he reflected on his fame.

"Do I get used to it? It's not a part of my everyday life, but I was actually incredibly surprised at the turnout here," DiCaprio said, before sharing why  Killers of the Flower Moon  was "such an incredibly important story to tell."

"I know we went into the process with the utmost of care and we wanted to listen, and that was our job," he said. "This was a dark chapter of American history, and we spent many years to try to tell this story right. We are very thankful, not only to the Osage committee for embracing us and telling us their story, but for all the actors, Lily included, to help shape the entire narrative of this movie."

Leonardo DiCaprio backs YC alum SolarMente to democratize solar power in Spain

Not all countries in Europe get lots of sunlight. You’d think Spain would be big on solar energy generation since it’s one of the sunniest countries in Europe — peak sun hours in Spain put it on par with the U.S. West Coast, after all. However, Spain still lags behind Germany and the Netherlands in terms of installed domestic solar panels, which could be partly due to a historical “ sun tax ,” a tax on solar installations, that the country scrapped only in 2018. Several years on, some startups are finally taking steps to make the most of this opportunity.

Barcelona-based SolarMente aims to turn solar installations into a mainstay of Spanish houses. Its CEO and co-founder, Wouter Draijer, told TechCrunch that he was spurred to start the company when he flew to Barcelona and had a bird’s-eye view of how few Spanish rooftops had solar panels compared to his home country, the Netherlands. He teamed up with Victor Gardrinier, a French national who studied at HEC Montreal and Stanford, to start the company.

Draijer said the company started off as an installer of solar panels in Spain, but after the pandemic, it decided it should offer a solar energy management system. In hindsight, that was probably a wise move, considering the panel installation market is already covered by specialized companies, and the falling cost of panels could make DIY efforts more attractive for homeowners. It also has a few startups to compete with, including Lumio Solar , which won the most sustainable startup award at Madrid’s South Summit 2023, and Tornasol , whose kits can be installed on balconies and paid for in installments through BNPL platform seQura.

“Solar is not a product,” Draijer said, explaining why most Spaniards can’t or just don’t want to pay upfront for solar panels. What he means is that people care more about what panels can do for them rather than owning them.

That’s why SolarMente offers subscription-based energy management services, which include installing solar panels without upfront costs. And instead of targeting people who live in apartments, the company prefers to sell to individual houses because it’s easier from a regulation standpoint and because the opportunity is bigger, Draijer said.

“We start with solar, but most of our customers can come back to us because we analyze their data, and we put a battery and EV charger, a heat pump, and then we start managing that energy.”

Recently, the Y Combinator alum added actor Leonardo DiCaprio to its cap table, becoming his first investment in Spain.

Solar arbitrage

Management of how much energy is consumed and when is a must with solar, because, as Gardrinier explained in an X thread back in 2023, “there is an arbitrage between the price at which households buy energy from the grid and the price at which households sell energy back to the grid.”

Gardrinier told TechCrunch that the arbitrage was what inspired him to focus on the company’s energy management, and he was initially interested in seeing how households with solar panels could trade their solar energy with peers on the blockchain.

That interest helped SolarMente win a blockchain-focused hackathon and launch a virtual battery service , but the next step of the startup’s journey doesn’t involve full-on trading. Instead, the startup wants to enable homeowners to optimize their energy consumption with a super app that helps them decide when to consume or sell the energy the solar panels generate.

Of the team, Gardrinier is also the most closely involved with fundraising, and gave some context on SolarMente’s financing so far: “As I like to think of it, with every round you de-risk your company and your team a little bit more. So with our YC round, the first $2 million seed round, with a very basic team, we showed that solar could maybe work in Spain. And then we did a much bigger round last year of mostly debt; we built a huge debt structure to finance our solar installations. And with that we wanted to prove that you can offer solar as a subscription service at the price of your gym membership, and make it democratized.”

DiCaprio’s newly announced investment is part of a larger seed round of equity financing focused on getting SolarMente where it needs to be to raise a Series A. “We’re using this round to really power our super app for home energy,” Gardrinier said.

Celebrity endorsement

Although this is DiCaprio’s first investment in Spain, the actor has been investing in tech startups since at least 2011 . He has also been famously vocal about climate change, to which he called attention in his acceptance speech at the 2016 Oscars ceremony.

Not all of the actor’s investments have to do with climate and green tech, but sustainability is a theme across many of those, which include Allbirds , Beyond Meat and Styrofoam replacement company Cruz Foam . For SolarMente, it also helped that one of their summer 2021 YC batch mates, water risk management platform Waterplan , was already in touch with DiCaprio.

Draijer and Gardrinier eventually met DiCaprio, Gardrinier said, and “every time we discussed the business and vision for energy transition, [DiCaprio] would put up his phone and show us one of the projects he’s working on — decentralized storage, etc.”

It likely helped that SolarMente’s approach wasn’t entirely new to the actor. DiCaprio previously invested in Bright , a startup that works on installing solar power in homes and businesses across Mexico. Just like SolarMente, it graduated from Y Combinator , and in July 2023 raised a $31.5 million Series C .

Could Bright and SolarMente partner one day? We’d say maybe. But first, SolarMente wants to further expand across Spain, where its subscription solar offer just became available nationwide, Draijer told TechCrunch.

Considering how sunny Spain is and how underequipped it still is, there’s no doubt that SolarMente has room to grow. Solar is one of the cleanest forms of energy, and the EU is determined to make sure it taps the giant ball of nuclear fusion in the sky to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. Indeed, as part of the REPowerEU plan, the European Commission is considering a path to introduce rules that would mandate installation of rooftop solar energy panels on most new and public and commercial buildings by 2026.

While SolarMente’s focus on individual homes makes it a somewhat “upscale” offering, it can still play a part in reducing the stress that fluctuating energy prices have caused Spanish households. As a bonus, its approach could also play a role in facilitating EV adoption, another area in which Spain has room for improvement .

Leonardo DiCaprio might not have been nominated for an award for his performance in Killers of the Flower Moon  at the 2024 Oscars , but with the movie and his costars up for 10 , it was assumed he would be at the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre on March 10.

However, as viewers were quick to notice, not only was DiCaprio not seen on the red carpet—though there were delays due to protestors blocking traffic outside the theater—but he wasn’t spotted in the audience alongside the rest of his cast and the team of Killers of the Flower Moon when they were shown multiple times throughout the night.

DiCaprio has been nominated for seven Oscars over this career—including for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape ,  The Aviator , Blood Diamond ,  The Wolf of Wall Street , and  Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood —and won once for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for The Revenant in 2016. In one of the major snubs of the year, he was not nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Killers of the Flower Moon. The nominees were Bradley Cooper for Maestro , Colman Domingo for Rustin , Paul Giamatti  for The Holdovers , Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer , and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction .

DiCaprio was nominated for a Critics Choice Award , Golden Globe , and Screen Actors Guild Award for Killers of the Flower Moon , but The Holdovers star Giamatti won the first, and Murphy won the second and third for Oppenheimer .

I am thrilled to inform you that once again Leonardo DiCaprio and his closest friend and confidant Tobey McGuire are on a boat. They are not in St.-Tropez , nor Sardinia , nor even the Amalfi Coast. That was yesterday’s yachting. This week, they’re off the coast of Ibiza. 

The crew is different this time as well. Leo and Tobey are hanging out with Ibiza's finest: Arabella Chi, 32-year-old Love Island star and Riccardo Tisci , Burberry’s COO. Chi and DiCaprio are not dating the tabloids say; she’s instead been linked to DiCaprio’s other buddy and nightlife man about town Richie Akiva , according to the Daily Mail . The actor’s plus one was actually Mick Jagger, who joined him for lunch on Wednesday.

I know what you’re thinking. Are you going to take note of every time Leonardo DiCaprio steps dockside until the end of time? All I can say is that it’s nice to have a calling. A grounding force, something to carry you through this one wild and precious life.

Leonardo DiCaprio was noticeably absent from the 2024 Oscars on Sunday (March 10), and now the reason why he skipped has been revealed.

The 49-year-old actor was snubbed and not nominated this year for his work in Killers of the Flower Moon , however, the film did receive 10 nominations, including Best Picture.

It is tradition for the lead actors in nominated films to attend the ceremony.

A source explained to E! News that Leonardo was forced to skip as he was filming his new Paul Thomas Anderson the same day. Leo has been filming for weeks, and we do have some photos of him on the set of his movie.

We do not know too much about the movie just yet, but it will reportedly be set in modern time . It was described as secretive and expensive when Leo signed on in early 2024. An estimated budget for the movie is around $100 million.

Leonardo won his first Oscar back in 2016.
