“Mauritius - Not what we expected...” Review of Grand Baie

Ilot Gabriel - you can take a day trip here

Having spent many years contemplating about going to Mauritius, we finally saved up for our next adventure. The Mauritian people were so lovely and friendly. When we got there the flight was with Air Mauritius which was pretty basic compared to Singapore Air or Virgin, the gangway of the plane was so narrow that every time someone walked by you were knocked which was not very helpful when trying to sleep. The island itself was covered in construction sites, and sugar cane fields. The construction sites would start work at 6am (if not earlier) which would go on until late in the evening. The other thing that was as great insight was the public beaches, they were ok and quite clean, you could walk on the beach even if it was a hotel beach, and the water seemed clean, the thing about the island that really let it down was the rubbish everywhere you looked, along roads, fields, absolutely everywhere, I was so surprised and felt they did not care about how their island looked. I was expecting a mini paradise, but the litter everywhere was disgraceful. Nice adventure, but won't be going back..

Dont go there!!!! We went 3 years ago to Pereybere (close by) and it was lovely as was Grand Baie. This year (2009), it is the crime capital of Mauritius. During a 3 week holiday we were burgled on day 4, and mugged at knifepoint on day 18. Not a pleasant time. The local police, whilst appear helpful are more interested in issuing memos than catching the criminals despite us giving them leads. We escaped to the south of the island for 2 days for a break and were told by a local in Blue Bay that every day in the local press are stories of muggings, theft, burglery and worse in the north which includes the areas of Pereybere, Grand Baie and Goodlands. I appreciate that not everyone is bad, but we met several other tourists who had experienced similar nightmares in the area, one couple went home after 4 days!! If you do go, dont put money where owners tell you to, hide it, separate it, or preferably don't keep any cash of any value. Don't go out at night, don't take debit cards/credit cards/handbags. If at all possible stay at an all inclusive well secured holiday resort.

I have been going to Mauritius since 1977! its changed more built up of course! I walked once from Port Louis to Trou aux Biches ( 35k ) along the beach in 1977 - nothing but sand and trees, no houses no people! now its changed with hotels and private house but still lovely! I like the Trou aux biches area best and North of Grand bay, Hire a bike or motor bike and get off the beaten track to some fantastic empty beaches. Diving is good, cycling is great, swiming is lovely like 30c in out winter! Food - avoid expensive hotels, Mauritius has fantastic local resturants, they look not much and u might think - no way! dont! eat at these places, u get fantastic fresh food - eg whole snapper fish in curry on bed of rice for about £4.50. if u are cycling or whatever and pass a local tin shack that sells food! eat it! its fantastic local and fresh! You will not be pestard by the locals at all! it is very safe! unless you are not street wise and end up in dark allies in a town drunk! Bring with u little clothes, they are fantastic the clothes to buy in MRU and cheep! sun lotion is a lot cheeper here too! CASH - use you bankers card at the cash machines you get the proper rate! Trip - go on the catermaran cruises cost about £25 all day and that includes all your drink and food! book these through local agencies and NOT THE HOTELS! u will pay tripple! If you go to the market BARTER! If they say a price HALF IT! then walk away! u will get it! Supermarkets! SuperU in Grand bay has everything - just like Europe! Diving I use Pro Dive near Trou aux biches - They are great, good value and Kevin who ownes it has a great time of guys! tell him Phil sent u from Scotland he will give u a deal! Enjoy MRU! The flights are good ( 12 hours ) leave afternoon arrive morning - u can go via London or Paris or even Dubai ( but that takes longer!) A good price is about £700 return Enjoy Phil MacIver ABERDEENSHIRE

We brought the boat from the capital city of Port Louis to the smaller resort town of Grand Baie some three weeks ago. We had only planned to stay ONE! We enjoyed ourselves so much in this picturesque bayside town that we rode the bus (30 minutes- 50 Rupees) to Port Louis and extended our visas. Since our arrival here, we temporarily joined the Grand Bayie Yacht Club so we could use their dock to hitch our dinghy for shore trips, and to use their shower facilities- it's too wasteful to use our onboard water supplies when there are other showers available. The yacht club has a bar and lunch/dinner is served daily. It's situated on a rocky point bounded by sand beaches on both sides and offers the best sunset view in Grand Baie. The first month's membership was free to visiting yachties. Our daily activities have comprised of beach trips, taxi excursions (can be booked directly with driver or at any of the ttourism offices along Sunset Boulevard) and grocery shopping (best selection at Super U-prices ok), internet café-ing, and diving/snorkeling. The first few days here, Dad and I went on a couple dives just outside the bay with the local dive shop based at the Veranda Hotel. We saw some nice coral and plenty of fish- one of the sites had a huge concentration of Moray Eels, Lion Fish and Scorpion Fish (all nasties of the reef). The other dive site was like a giant aquarium with thousands of fish that swim right up to your face! We visited a couple of beaches via bus (10-14 Rupees one-way)to the north (Pereybere) and to the south (Trou aux Biches- Hole of the Does-and Mon Choisy). They are long, white sand beaches lined with casuarina pines and turquoise waters. The snorkeling at Trou aux Biches proved best (swim straight out from the beach-watch out for the ski boats- it's quite a distance to the best snorkeling, so you better be a good swimmer and save energy to get back. you can always hire a boat from the beach to take you out), while Pereybere could be counted on for people-watching. All beaches have bathrooms and ice cream/fast food vendor trucks making things convenient! On one occasion, we hired a taxi for the day to drive us to Port Louis to refill our propane tanks and then take us to the Jardins des Pamplemousses (Gardens of Grapefruits)- an amazing botanical garden with plants and trees from all over the world, including giant three-foot lilly pads! We had lunch at a Chinese restaurant nearby and then visited L'Adventure du Sucre (The Sugar Adventure)- a superbly-done museum on the sugar industry that provided a comprehensive explanation of the growing/milling processes and the general history of the island. We booked directly with the driver a couple days in advance. We paid 1,500 Rupees for the full day (8am-5pm), excluding gratuity. He dropped us at every stop and waited until we were finished. The night life here is the best on Mauritius. People travel from all over the island to visit Grand Baie's clubs. We frequented a place called Zanzibar (dance club with international DJs) most and met a lot of great people from all over the world. Just next to it is a place called Banana Beach Bar (more relaxed sit-down with live music), which brings the beach inside with its sand floors and open-air, tree-filled courtyard. Up the road to the north, you will find a newer club called Ill ñ Gyone (don't worry, no one here can pronounce the name either) with an indoor/outdoor seating area lined with water fountains, trees, candles and a dance floor; crowd is mostly Asian. A little further up the road is Buddha Bar (mostly Indo-Mauritians) and Stardance (mixed crowd with a lot of hookers). Off the beaten path, you will find a locals dance club called Kilimanjaro- it was a cool place, but we showed up on a random Wednesday night, where were the only patrons. And finally, to the south is the ritzy indoor/outdoor Les Enfants Terribles (Terrible Children). The crowd more mixed in terms of race, age, sex than any other club and had the most expensive drinks of all. Everywhere we went, we met very nice, welcoming people. Just introduce yourself at the bars and you can make local friends easily. They will take you to barbeques on Sugar Estates and show you their unique culture better than any museum or book or tourism joint can explain.
