Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina Review

  • By Tom Serio
  • Updated: August 2, 2021

Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina

The Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina has some design changes from its GT siblings. The flybridge is pushed back a little, in a design nod to earlier Hatteras sport-fish yachts. There are newly designed side windows, and the engine-room side vents are longer. But the GT65 retains the series’ trademarks, such as generous bow flare, seakeeping ability and fish-raising muscle.

The owner of our test boat, Rascal , is a seasoned yachtsman, angler and family man who considered all of these attributes in his purchase. He worked as a mate on fishing boats when he was younger and has always been around boats with his family. Having owned several Hatteras sport-fish yachts, he decided the GT65 Carolina was the next logical move.

Rascal’s captain, Nick Millsap, has worked with the owner for five years and says the GT65 Carolina exceeded expectations. On the initial cruise to meet the owner, Millsap says, the GT65 had “a great dry ride, even into the head seas. It was rough, but the ride was awesome.”

Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina

The GT65 has a 194-square-foot cockpit, and there is room to swivel the combination fighting chair/rocket launcher in any direction on a frenetic marlin. Mezzanine seating to port has air conditioning to keep guests and line watchers cool. A stainless-steel freezer box is under the seat. Beneath the footrests are chilled boxes for refreshments.

To starboard is a tackle center with a prep station and eight drawers. The drawers have stainless-steel bottoms with holes for drainage and ventilation. An electric grill can be installed on top of the unit.

An in-deck ice maker produces not cubes but cylindrical ice, so it lasts longer and can touch more surfaces, keeping the catch fresher. The in-transom livewell can be fitted out with tuna tubes. Teak coaming boards add panache, while the lack of teak in the cockpit eases cleanup and maintenance.

For all its angling focus in the cockpit, the GT65 has yacht-level elegance inside. High-gloss teak is used for the cabinets and furnishings. Complementing the wood are light fabric headliners with teak accents, as well as a vinyl-plank sole for durability. An L-shaped sofa to port is plush and has stowage below each section.

Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina

Rascal’s layout has a galley island with two bar stools, a setup that creates multiple ways to move in and around the galley, and that makes more space for several folks to enjoy meals. The standard galley layout is a peninsula form, creating a U-shaped countertop with room for one more bar stool. Either way, the galley has fridge and freezer drawers; a microwave; a four-burner electric cooktop; stowage for pots, pans and dishes; and pantries and cabinets with matching grain. An elevated U-shaped dinette to port has underseat stowage and a teak table.

Belowdecks is a four-stateroom, three-head layout. All spaces have 6-foot-8-inch to 7-foot-1-inch headroom. The amidships en suite stateroom has a queen walk-around berth, nightstands, a full-size closet and drawers. The forward VIP can have a queen-size centerline berth or a 60/40 split berth. The two remaining staterooms have upper and lower berths.

Owners can convert one of the staterooms to a Hatteras Integrated Tackle Storage room, with gear cabinets and rig-prepping counter space. For the competing crew, the washer and dryer in the companionway should come in handy during tournament season.

Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina

To minimize maintenance, most all of the high-gloss teak finishes on the exterior can be painted in a faux-teak finish. It looks as close to real as you’ll get, without the need for varnishing.

Sporting a style that blends a little bit of yesterday with a lot of today, the Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina is built for running to blue water—and is designed to look good doing it.

This article is a transcription of the 64 Hatteras video from Denison’s YouTube Channel . Tune in daily to discover the latest yacht video walkthroughs from the world’s largest yacht video collection. Watch the full video below:

Hi, I’m Jay Rhoades with Denison Yachting. And today we’re going to walk through a 64 Hatteras Motoryacht built in 2006 and completely refit in 2021. Every system on the boat has either been enhanced, replaced, or serviced to put her in as new condition. Highlights include dual Seakeeper and gyrostabilizers which completely eliminate rolling at sea. All new garment electronics with six multi-function displays three at each helm and all new air conditioning compressors and air handlers and pumps.

64 Hatteras Swim Platform

We’ll begin on the swim platform, which has all new teak decks and stainless steel rails, which were installed by pipe welders last year. Moving into the fully air-conditioned engine room in lazarette area, you’ll find the two Seakeeper nine units, port, and starboard. Further forward, through another watertight door is the engine room.

All hoses, pumps, air conditioning units, and lighting were all replaced during the last 12 months. Continuing up three steps from the swim platform is the aft deck, which also has new teak decking. There is a new varnish teak table and aft cushion bench seating which accommodates eight people. Continuing around the full walk-around side decks to the bow is a custom sun pad with an adjustable back as well as easy access to all ground tackle.

64 hatteras aft deck

The fly bridge can be accessed from the aft deck or from the pallet house area. It’s also fully air-conditioned. All cushions, seating, and varnished teak tables are new. The centerline helm has all-new garment electronics with three multifunction displays, autopilot, sonar, satellite weather, and solid-state digital radar.

In addition, she’s equipped with a stabilized FLR thermal night vision camera, a yacht controller, a wireless docking system, a closed circuit camera system, and all new high-end audio system. In addition, there is a Furrion outdoor 43-inch LED TV and sound bar. The boat deck features a 2021 Caribe hard bottom inflatable Dinghy, with a 40-horsepower Yamaha outboard, which rests on removable chalks, which convert the boat deck to an outdoor lounge area which is the configuration you see.

43 hatteras flybridge

Entering the salon through a stainless steel framed glass sliding door, there is a large U-shape sofa to starboard and two newly upholstered club chairs to port.

All interior woodwork throughout the yacht is done in a high gloss Macquarie wood. On the port side forward is a new Sony 55-inch LED TV, which is mounted at an angle making it visible anywhere in the salon. Up three steps from the salon is the pallet house in galley. A dinette with U-shape newly cushioned seating for six is the port and the galley overlooking the salon is the starboard. The galley features, subzero refrigeration, and all high-end appliances. The center line lower helm is forward which has all electronics duplicated from the fly bridge. A watertight panta graft door to the side deck is the starboard. Further forward to starboard is a stairwell which leads down to the guest accommodations.

64 hatteras salon

Immediately to starboard is a locker with a whirlpool stacked washer and dryer. Directly across the companionway is the guest stateroom with side-by-side twin bars and an on-suite head, which also has an entrance from the companionway. All the way forward is the VIP guest stateroom with a centerline queen birth and on-suite head and shower.

The full beam master stateroom is aft with a king-size bed and an en-suite head with a large glass-enclosed tub. All three staterooms feature abundant hanging and drawer storage.

The nice folks at Hatteras Yachts closed off their Hatteras M90 Panacera in the middle of a boat show so Nick could take a look around - this is what he found…

Hatteras Yachts of New Bern, NC are best known for their sportfish yachts that can take on the biggest of big game fish and come out on top every time.

However, with more than 60 years of experience behind them, that’s by no means the only style of yacht they’ve built.

One of the most notable examples from recent years is the Hatteras M90 Panacera, a pocket superyacht that limbos under the 24m load line length limit, so it could be operated by an owner without a professional crew.

In this video, filmed at the 2020 Miami Boat Show , Nick Burnham was lucky enough to have this 91ft cruising machine all to himself.

Hi everyone, first post & also first thread starter - please be gentle! I notice that Hatteras' website no longer lists Motor Yachts and only shows Sportfish designs. Wayback Machine shows that in August 2021 it gave the following blurb on the front page: "From hull design and propulsion to on-board connectivity and interior design, a commitment to innovation fuels every aspect of our luxury motor yacht and convertible sport fishing yacht business. And in the process, we’re creating a legacy for others to chase and an unmatched experience for a fortunate few to enjoy." This has now had the words " luxury motor yacht and " removed, along with the links to their larger Motor Yacht offerings. Does anyone know if this is permanent? I can't find any news or announcements about it. Really just wanting to know if they've just given up entirely on that market segment - they always had the 'Your father's boat' vibe about them, but it would be a shame if they stopped entirely.

Only Johnny Morris knows. This was a Bass Pro/White River Marine Move and all production tied up with Mako and Ranger Saltwater and Hatteras SF's. They initially talked about redeveloping the line but then just removed it with no further comments. Has it gone the way of Cabo? I've found that lines removed are easily forgotten. Tollycraft, Post, Christensen, Trinity. The White River group is very tight lipped.
An interesting aside. White River doesn't even list Hatteras among their brands on their website. Apparently trying very much to keep them separate. Guess Tracker and Hatteras don't fit together.

This has been speculated about for a while and it s a real shame. They ve been pushed aside by foreign builders, I guess quality doesn’t sell these days as buyers aren’t willing to pay the extra.

gr8trn said: ↑ I am afraid you may be correct. I do think style has something to do with it as well. Oldsmobile anyone? Not that Olds and Hatt have any resemblance regarding quality and longevity but style comes to mind. I would not be surprised to see Hatt MY a thing of the past. Azimut, Maritimo. Riviera, Princess, Sunseeker, Absolute, heck; even Prestige and Galeon are part of the reason Hatt MY is out of the picture. Again, not discussing quality of materials and workmanship, just trends with usage and style preferences. Click to expand...
olderboater said: ↑ The decision making is not known. Were the MY's profitable as many say, or perhaps not as much so. The space they took and the time they took building can be used to build a lot of very profitable small boats. Perhaps MY's did ok, but just really didn't maximize the profit per sq ft and per worker. Just a wild number but in the space it took to build one 100' MY and over the time it took which often was 2 years or more, you could build 70 or so 33' Mako's. I think you'd increase sales dollars by 50% and margin by 200%. I don't think any of the mentioned boats are the reason Hatteras isn't producing MY's. They are, themselves. Slow and inefficient builders. No changes. No lower helm. Nothing to do with competition. They still had orders. I know of several orders turned down. I think the Hatteras buyer is more likely to turn to OA or someone. The 75 and 95 were nice boats, just poorly marketed and took far too long to build and their building of everything at Hatteras was inefficient. When a brand dies, it's seldom due to the competitors, it's from within. Click to expand...
gr8trn said: ↑ I think you are correct about the Hatteras MY buyers. Despite turning down several orders, which can be for many reasons no one is privy to such as contract demands not being aligned with Hatteras standards or capabilities, would not a larger pool of Hatteras MY buyers be ideal? Click to expand...

I think Hatteras’ demise in the motor yacht segment is due simply to Hatteras no longer offering what motor yacht buyers wanted. Whether it was styling or pricing or lack of features or dealers that didn’t order spec boats for immediate purchase or build time or production capacity or whatever. I think it’s a safe bet the new owner is making moves to maximize output from the New Bern factory. They said from the outset they were going to bring in additional product lines. So it’s out with what isn’t working and in with what is. What Hatteras accomplished from the 1970’s through the 1990’s in MY sales means nothing today.

I heard from a very reliable source this past weekend that there was a clean up in New Bern that involved the crushing and removal of some Hatteras molds and all the remaining Cabo molds. If you search for Cabo Yachts online their website is no more and zero activity on social media on years. Sad to see two once great companies fall the way they have.

At least one was right before the sale and put on hold and another right after the sale and I'm not sure on the third. Larger pool is always nice, but Hatteras was booked well out. If you can only build a couple per year of a model, really doesn't matter if you have three customers or you have 20 waiting. Click to expand...

gr8trn said: ↑ I just don't think it all stacks up to focusing efforts elsewhere, they had to as the MY line was not growing it's pool and the other lines are more in demand. If the MY yacht line was in demand, they would be happy to fill orders, or find a buyer/manufacturer to sell to to fill orders. It would not just wither on the vine as it appears to be doing. sad to say nothing stays the same forever thinking back over the years, how many US builders of fiberglass yachts (40 - 70 ft.) are still around and building in that niche, not many i can think of other than builders previously mentioned a short list of a few i recall..... Bertram, Chris-Craft, Concorde, Trojan, Pacemaker, Gulfstar, Stephens, Egg Harbor, Matthews, Ocean, and now it appears Hatteras, surely many more i have forgot
To expand on my previous post, Hatteras even prior to being purchased wasn’t doing the things they needed to do to build a lot of motor yachts. I’m not saying they couldn’t. I’m saying they didn’t. I think that’s because they had plenty of other things they’d rather be doing at that time. Which was building sport fishers. Now the new owners are bringing even more other things to do. I don’t know why Viking builds motor yachts either. Maybe I’m wrong but it seems they don’t build many. Building a few of something different in a production process kills efficiency. Why bother? Besides, Viking could build sport fishers 8 days a week.

Could be why Viking tried to bring a foreign boat with their name on it. Princess/Vikings were cool, but not Viking. I don't think is is much the styles either,,,, Just the extra hours that the mfg (Hatteras, Viking and others) thinks it takes to build a proper motor yacht vs what can be had cheaper from abroad. When you want to make bux, you do what your market can stand, that is fast sport fishing boats. Here, Viking took the plunge with their extra line of open (CCs) and is doing great. Don't be surprised when Hatteras tries a line here of their own. I look forward (per rumors) that some of the Carolina builders may be coming back on line in mas production speed with interesting new design layouts...
All above is testament that old sport fishing builds will always have a market. Remember,,, Post builds are cool....

Hatteras names manager to lead New Bern plant operations

youtube hatteras yachts

White River Marine Group has announced the addition of Guy Roberts to serve as plant manager for its Hatteras Yachts facility in New Bern, N.C.

“We are very excited to have Guy come on board to lead manufacturing in New Bern,” said Johnny Morris, noted angler-conservationist and founder of Bass Pro Shops and White River Marine Group. “Guy has a passion for his people, and his experience in the manufacturing industry is a perfect fit for this position as we prepare to introduce the all new Hatteras, high-performance sportfishing boats.”

Roberts is an avid boater who loves spending time on the water with his family. He is also a highly respected and experienced leader in manufacturing. His professional experience lies as a hands-on leader, who has been heavily involved in the transformation of plants, people and culture.

“I am incredibly thrilled and humbled to be able to step into this position,” Roberts said. “There is no brand in the boating world that is as respected as White River Marine Group, and Hatteras Yachts has a history that is unparalleled when it comes to quality and workmanship. It is an honor to step into this role.”

Thanks to a full restoration by the Hatteras factory team in 2013, she looked just as fresh and feisty as ...

  17. Boat Review: Hatteras 77

She cruises comfortably at 25 knots turning 1,800 rpm and burning a more reasonable 130 gph. The 77's handling will surely pique your interest, however. I turned the wheel hard over at 30 knots, and the boat banked into the turn like a 747, carving an arc like a 40-footer. She completed the course reversal in just three boat lengths.
