trimaran boat concept

As there isn’t anything else in the market quite like Spear, with a length of 140m, 4650 GT, and a beam overall of 23m, it was difficult to find a suitable baseline to compare to. After consideration, a 110m monohull of 4400 GT provided the closest solution.

At a generous cruise speed of 18 knots, the trimaran's propulsion power needs are 20% lower than the baseline 110m monohull: placing Spear’s power demand equivalent to an 80m monohull with twice the usable GT. Leveraging the larger dimensions, Spear offers a medium-speed engine at the core of the energy architecture, often found in large commercial vessels, providing a further 15% fuel saving per kW compared to a typical yacht’s high-speed engine.

trimaran boat concept

With its reduced fuel demands and ample available tank volumes, this concept comfortably achieves a range exceeding 7500 nautical miles, establishing Spear as a genuine vessel for global adventure.

By design, the relatively small sponsons contribute to an inherently comfortable platform that needs little support from active stabilisation. Although the sponsons are not available for internal space, they do provide valuable tank volumes. This helps to facilitating the inclusion of future fuels, particularly methanol, which combined with the medium speed engine already incorporated, will be the first viable future fuel solution to reach the market.

trimaran boat concept

While the technical achievements of Spear are commendable, this stabilized monohull concept introduces additional advantages by offering a spacious luxury platform. It boasts a 40% increase in the highly sought-after luxury external space whilst keeping the internal luxury area similar to a 110m monohull.

Designed to maximize outdoor living space, the yacht boasts expansive sun decks, alfresco dining areas, and luxurious lounging areas where guests can bask in the sun or unwind in the shade. Whether hosting a glamorous cocktail party or simply soaking up the scenery, Spear's open decks provide the perfect setting for every occasion.

DOMUS Trimaran 40 meter Zero-emission Yacht Concept

The DOMUS is an innovative concept design for a 40m zero-emission trimaran. The designers behind the trimaran are Van Geest and Rob Doyle , and the design duo amalgamated several innovative ideas to create the first yacht of 750 gross tons with zero carbon emissions.

The yacht combines superyacht luxury with an eco-friendly design, delivering a new direction for the yachting industry.

4

DOMUS yacht interior

Van Geest and Rob Doyle have combined their ideas to design the spacious interior of DOMUS. DOMUS means a single-story house built around an atrium with many rooms opening off the central atrium area.

The design is built around the idea of these traditional abodes, which originated from Rome and Pompeii.

The trimaran has used this concept to create an open, lofty feeling in the onboard area. The unique shape gives the yacht expansive real estate on board.

The interior of the DOMUS is a 783-square-meter deck split over two decks. There are six cabins on board, with four VIP cabins and two large owners suites with individual lounge areas.

The interior is a floating home on the water with cutting-edge designs and technology.

The spaces are laid out strategically to maximize the family feel of the trimaran and maintain a connection with the views. The interior includes a cinema room, gym, and a saloon with a bar.

2

The idea that sparked the design of the DOMUS was “Why not?” The design duo believes that just because superyachts are the way right now, why couldn’t they be done in another way.

The yacht was an amalgamation of different ideas, with Doyle focussing on naval architecture, performance, and structural feasibilities. Van Gees developed the styling and the layouts for DOMUS.

The vessel’s exterior is sleek and sophisticated and has been designed to bring the exterior of the ocean and views outside into the living spaces with large windows and a central open plan feel to the spaces inside.

The designers are working on a larger version of the 40m concept for a shipyard which could be the future of luxury yacht design.

3

Specifications

The DOMUS will be the first 40m long zero-emission yacht of 750 gross tons. The unique vessel will be powered by solar power, hydro regeneration, and hydrogen fuel cell systems.

The exterior is lined with solar panels to achieve the zero-emissions goal for DOMUS. The result is a vessel with an unlimited range, high speeds, space, sustainability, and carbon-free, noiseless cruising.

The tri-hull of the trimaran offers several design benefits that the designers are firm believers in. The trimaran is designed to heel 2 degrees to allow the weather hull to come out of the water.

This concept reduces drag and increases performance. This means a high level of comfort onboard for the guests, especially compared to a sailing or motor monohull, which experiences high rolling angles.

Large trimarans are proven to be faster than catamarans of the same size, and this kind of high performance would be impossible to achieve in a superyacht catamaran.

The trimaran is significantly cheaper to construct than a catamaran because it needs only one system in the center hull instead of two.

The yacht is truly the amalgamation of luxury yacht design and eco-friendly sailing.

2022: the yacht concept is announced by designers.

AUDI trimaran yacht

model of AUDI trimaran yacht image © designboom

AUDI has given designboom some exclusive insight into the AUDI trimaran yacht – a graduate project by german designer stefanie behringer, developed under the supervision of the AUDI concept design in munich, germany.

in the words of designer stefanie behringer: the new concept integrates two jet skis within a motorboat. the hull’s architecture is based on a trimaran (a boat with multiple hulls), consisting of a main center hull which is supported by two smaller outrigger hulls on either side of the boat. inside each of these two outrigger pods, one jet ski is stored.

the main advantage of multi-hulls,  is their slender shape which makes them efficient, resulting in less friction resistance in the water. furthermore multi-hulls are very stable at sail and at anchor.

the boat is driven by two efficient and lightweight AUDI TDI (turbo-charged injection) diesel engines, while the jet skis are electric driven. at low speed up to 8 knots, for example in bays or harbors, the whole boat can be moved with the single power of the electric driven jet skis, without producing any emissions or noise. at higher speeds of up to 30 knots, the two diesel engines can be switched on continuously. during this process the electric supports the diesel engines while accelerating, so that the boat is planes at a faster speed and less fuel is needed. at the same time the diesel engines recharge the batteries of the two jet boats.

the boat’s overall length is 15m, and due to its slender center hull measures only 6.40 m wide. the jet driven concept allows one to even travel in shallow water, because its draft is only 58 cm. on deck there is space for 12 people, while below, the boat offers more room in the form of four berths. by flipping down a saloon table within one of the spaces, another two additional berths can be offered.

the design is based on the AUDI brand values – progressive, sportive and premium: the vessel has an athletic, elegant appearance without being too powerful or aggressive. the main proportions of the exterior follow the graceful character of a sailing yacht, emphasized by mesh surfaces within the outriggers and the shape of the main hull, which narrows towards the back. the jet skis follow the elegant and light appearance of the main boat. the silver frame, which links the outrigger pods with the main hull, accentuate the technical components of AUDI and is reminiscent of aluminum frame structures seen in automotive engineering.

the deck area is a place for relaxation and socializing. in contrast to the more technical and emotional designed exterior, this space is based on very calm and puristic shapes, offering characteristics of a lounge. between the two spacious seating benches, which grow out of the large sun lounger surfaces from the back, a table can be moved out of the floor. the huge panoramic glass roof not only shields one from head wind, but also works as sun protection. the high side walls prevent from water spray. the storage area in the front gives space for equipment like snorkel, fins or the shopping from mainland. the suspended seating bench offers optimal driving comfort.

Commercial Vessels

The trimaran family.

Mobimar has built numerous single and multi hull aluminium and steel vessels, according to the client’s specifications. As we wanted to offer a boat properly tested by ourselves, we applied all of our expertise and developed an innovative trimaran vessel concept. The first boat of its kind was the ‘ORV Alwadi’, a 16 metre oil recovery support vessel built in 2008.

All of our trimaran vessels share the following properties:

  • steady and soft in heavy sea
  • not susceptible to slamming
  • large work deck
  • low fuel consumption
  • ability to carry a significantly bigger crane than a corresponding single hull boat

In addition, Mobimar has developed adaptations of the trimaran vessels to address the needs of a specific application field – e.g. oil recovery, safety and rescue, marine research or offshore wind farm service. As ice limits navigation in arctic waters for several months of the year, we have also subjected the trimaran concept design to model tests at the arctic basin of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The tests have proved that the trimaran breaks ice with 40 % less energy than a conventional single hull ice breaker. This property is patented.

The length of Mobimar trimaran vessels range from 12 to 35 meters, and there are two basic models on offer in each vessel size: Work and Oil Recovery .

SAFETY, BUOYANCY & STABILITY

Safety, buoyancy & stability is guaranteed by optimal design of the main hull and floats , which was tested in the towing tank of Southampton (home of many wedstrijdtri’s).The result is a hull with a small wet surface at light wind conditions and yet sufficient area at more wind speed. The floats are the same length as the main hull and bulkywith a lot of volume in the front, so that at higher speeds sufficient lift to the bow will becreated (of boththe hull and of the floats) to slide over the water. As a result, there is hardly any risk of tunneling into the waves orcapsize.

The large volume of the floats ensures that the Trimax, even with a hole in themain hull, remains seaworthy and controllable . With a volume of 3.3 m³ one float is sufficientto bear the entire ship (boat weight ± 2.800 kg).

The trampolines  are made from a PVC-coated (UV resistant) anti-slip cloth, have a highdegree of perforation so that any overtopping waves will immediately be drained. The Trimax is one of the only trimarans equipped with a gunwale , so that the deck and the mast always remain safe accessible.

CONSTRUCTION HULL, BEAMS & FLOATS

The forces on a trimaran are to nine times (!) larger than those on a comparable monohull. Therefore, a trimaran needs to be much stronger built. The construction of the hull and floats of the Trimax is extralight, strong and stiff, developed after an extensive three-dimensional strength calculation. The skin of the full Trimax consists of a sandwich construction with an outerand inner sheath of epoxy resin and carbon and a core ofat least 15mm hard foam . Moreover, the interior is largely made of laminatedsandwich foam and laminated to the skin, reinforcing the stifness. The beams, daggerboards and rudder are reinforced with carbon fibers .

The specific gravity of the sandwich construction is significantly lower than that of water, so that the Trimax has much buoyancy. Watertight compartments in the front and rear of hull and floats ensure extra buoyancy. The beams are mounted extra high, so that a rough sea does not get a grip onthe boat. All these properties makes the Trimax 1080 a perfect seaworthyyacht with great stability!

With the retractable daggerboards and folding rudder, the Trimax 1080 has a draft of 50 cm , so beaches, shallow water and other normally inaccessible places, become perfectly accessible. The bottom features a sturdy laminate and the daggerboards and the rudder automatically fold in when running aground.

FOLDING SYSTEM

An ingenious folding system prevents costly berth in ports. The folding is easy and done by vertically folding the floats to the side of the hull . This folding system allows a wider hull than those of comparable trimarans so creates a more spacious interior. The system is a further development of the ‘Farrier’ folding system (which only has one folding position), ocean seaworthyness is proven in many transats. The width of the trimaran measures 8m50 unfolded and 3m80 folded in in the harbor, so he fits perfectly in a “monohull” berth. The low center of gravity and the width of 3m80 garantees sufficiently stability in the port itself as ‘outside’ a storm occurs.

TRAILERABLE

By the ability to trailer the Trimax meets the need for both short term (eg racing or short breaks) and for longer trips or to explore other areas ore to increase your own sailing area. The Trimax 1080 is the largest trimaran which can be trailered. Trimax provides transportation for two widths: – 3.0 m: special transport (B + E license, unaccompanied vehicle), single mast to disassemble – 2.55 m: normal transport (B + E license), also floats to disassemble

SAIL PROPERTIES

The optimized shape of hull, floats, beams and daggerboards, the light hull construction and large stability not only give a strong sense of security. Together with an expanded battened mainsail and a long retractable carbon bowsprit which fits an extensive sail wardrobes, they guarantee excellent sailing characteristics . With the accelerations, the sailor enjoys the thrill of a fast open boat.

Deck plan and sail plan are designed to sail single handed or with complete crew. The spacious cockpit, the large outer space due the trampolines and a maximum gradient of 10 °, make sailing more comfortable, even with heavier weather. Thanks to its high stability the Trimax does not need to reef quickly. Nonetheless, the mainsail has three positions for reefing so that even in extreme weather can be sailed safely .

Table of contents

‍ what kind of boat is used in the waterworld.

When I first heard about "Waterworld," I was captivated by its ambition. The film, directed by Kevin Reynolds, starring Kevin Costner in a post-apocalyptic setting where the earth is submerged in water.

The boat central to "Waterworld" is a trimaran, a type of multihull boat with a main hull and two smaller outrigger hulls. This vessel was not just a set piece but a functional craft, intricately designed by VPLP Design’ It was specifically for the film to embody the rugged and self-reliant spirit of the main character, Costner.

The film's portrayal of the trimaran was grounded yet imaginative, reflecting mankind's resilience in an imagined watery future. With its real-world sailing sequences, the boat became almost as much a character as the actors around it.

Two iterations of the trimaran were constructed for the film. A relatively standard racing vessel (surpassed 30 knots in September 1994). This was a fully functional Kevin Costner sailboat for distance shots and is in private hands.

The second one is an effects-laden transforming vessel for closeup shots. This one is at a lake in Universal Studios, Florida.

Now, let’s explore the design, significance, and lasting impression of the Waterworld trimaran.

Design and Concept

The design and concept of the Waterworld Trimaran represented a visionary approach to creating a vessel that was visually captivating and deeply embedded in the narrative fabric of the film.

Collaborating with VPLP Design , a renowned naval architecture firm, Vincent Lauriot Prevost embarked on a creative journey to craft a watercraft that would be both a functional mode of transportation and a symbol of hope in the dystopian world of "Waterworld."

The most striking feature of the Trimaran was its tri-hull design, an unconventional choice that set it apart from traditional watercraft.

This tri-hull configuration had two smaller outer hulls (amas) and a larger central hull (main hull). It was visually intriguing and contributed significantly to the vessel's stability and buoyancy.

In a world where dry land had become a rare commodity, this design choice allowed the Trimaran to navigate the vast expanses of water with confidence, providing a sense of security for its inhabitants.

The towering mast was another distinctive feature that added to the Trimaran's allure. It served a practical purpose by supporting sails and enhancing the vessel's imposing presence on the water.

This design element and windmill blades emphasized the Trimaran's capability to harness the power of the wind. It made the trimaran a formidable and efficient means of transportation in a world where fuel was scarce.

Perhaps one of the most visionary aspects of the Trimaran's design was its unconventional yet practical layout. While it appeared as a vessel of utility, it seamlessly incorporated living quarters, storage space, and essential facilities below deck.

This multifunctional design allowed it to serve as a mode of transportation and as a self-contained community on the water. It became a floating refuge, reflecting the resilience and adaptability of its inhabitants.

Size and Scale

The Trimaran in "Waterworld" was depicted as a massive vessel, which was crucial for the narrative. Its size suggested self-sufficiency and the ability to house a small community of survivors.

This allowed it to carry ample supplies, equipment, and provisions, making it suitable for long journeys and survival underwater near San Diego Bay and parts of the Pacific. The grand scale of the Trimaran emphasized its significance as a central element in the film.

Construction and Maintenance

Building the Waterworld Trimaran for filming and the fictional harsh marine environment required robust construction.

In the real world, a similar vessel would demand meticulous maintenance to ensure the integrity of its triple hulls and the functionality of its previously hidden mast system.

The filmmakers' commitment to maintaining the vessel's appearance and functionality reflected its importance as a central element of the film's world.

The Waterworld Trimaran was not just a backdrop; it was a dynamic character in its own right, and its proper care and maintenance were essential to ensure its seamless integration into the film's narrative. This video illustrates the Trimaran’s robust construction.

In-Film Role and Symbolism

In the movie "Waterworld," the Trimaran transcended its role as a mere vessel; it became a central character intimately linked with the survival and identity of the Mariner, portrayed by Kevin Costner.

This remarkable watercraft served multiple crucial functions throughout the narrative, going beyond its role as a mode of transportation.

Firstly, the Trimaran provided shelter in a world where dry land had become scarce. It symbolized the mariner's lifeline, offering him a safe haven from the dangers of the waterlogged world.

Its living quarters became a refuge, not just for the mariner but also for the hope of finding a place to call home.

The Trimaran's mobility was essential for navigating the treacherous seas and exploring the vast, flooded landscapes. Its agility mirrored the mariner's adaptability and resourcefulness in this harsh environment.

Furthermore, the vessel served as a formidable defense mechanism, protecting the mariner from the threats of pirates and the notorious smokers led by Dennis Hopper. It was a symbol of resilience, allowing the protagonist to confront adversity head-on and overcome the odds.

Legacy and Influence

The Waterworld Trimaran boat has left an enduring legacy, profoundly influencing both maritime enthusiasts and filmmakers alike. Its unique design, blending form and function, has captivated the imagination of those within the maritime community and beyond. It has influenced the community in the following ways:

Tri60 trimaran day boat concept from BMT and McConaghy

BMT Asia Pacific and McConaghy Boats have collaborated on a bold new day boat trimaran concept, the 18.3 metre Tri60 – an ideal complement to a mothership superyacht.

The designers sought to balance the often competing needs for space, style and speed in a large tender concept that took its lead from one of 2012’s biggest launches built by McConaghy Boats, 42.5 metre Adastra , at the time heralded as “the future of superyachts” .

Richard Colwill, managing director at BMT Asia Pacific comments: “BMT worked with McConaghy two years ago on a unique composite project at the same time that the much-celebrated *Adastra *trimaran was being completed. We asked, ‘How can we capture the spirit of this compelling work? How do we create something that is as innovative and exciting, whilst also being accessible to a wider dayboat or weekender market?’”

The Tri60 is available in two guises: the open Tri60 Cabriolet, ideal for those focussed on being outdoors, and the more enclosed Tri60 Saloon, which boasts a spacious full-beam cabin. Both variations are built off an optimised trimaran hull form that should provide sparkling performance.

Mark Evans, Joint Managing Director at McConaghy in New Zealand, says, “In taking the Tri60 forward we are building on decades of high-performance composite and multi-hull experience in prototype and production boats that will deliver a unique yacht, providing clients space, style and speed in a manner that no other yacht of this size offers.”

The Tri60 boasts a wide beam more commonly found in yachts of 27 metres and the massive windows, skylights and sliding glass doors mean natural light is a big part of the on board experience. There is a stern garage fitting a three metre four-person tender. The pontoons handily stow additional deck furniture, fenders and water toys.

The Tri60 should be good for 32 knots on its base engine option of twin 475hp engines. Perhaps more importantly, the narrow hull will give a comfortable passage in head seas and with huge fuel efficiency compared to a monohull of the same length – an estimated 30 per cent less power will be needed. At low speeds, the twin water jets will give fingertip control for manoeuvring in marinas.

Evans adds, “We are very excited to offer McConaghy’s advanced composite construction capabilities in partnership with BMT’s design initiative. The combined strength of our two organisations has created a light, efficient and durable yacht with eye-catching style.”
