Dehler 34 review

  • Chris Beeson
  • March 1, 2017

The original Dehler 34 marked a turning point in the history of Dehler yachts. Can the new 34 do the same? Graham Snook tests her to find out and here's his review

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

See the February 2017 issue of Yachting Monthly for the full test

What’s she like to sail?

I got a pleasing glimpse at her potential speed when the apparent wind did increase into double digits. If we’d had a gennaker she would have been faster and I’d have been the proverbial cat who got the cream. The helm was a comfortable weight but the Jefa steering wasn’t as light as on other boats with a similar setup – merely a comment, not a criticism.

Sitting outboard, it’s easy to trim the mainsail from the helm, although when tacking and hardening up, it was easier to stand between the wheels and take the slack out of the mainsheet. Seated at the helm, the space is confined by the pushpit and backstay, but the pushpit does make a good backrest.

Even in a gentle breeze she was enjoyable to sail, but with a few more knots she’ll transform into something a lot more fun and involving, eagerly responding to the wheel. There is plenty of room to work in the cockpit, and sitting on the sloped coaming is comfortable, although you do have to be aware of the mainsheet, which is led up the coaming to a winch by the wheel.

What’s she like in port and at anchor?

Although the coamings around the cockpit are low, the curved area at the forward end is worth fighting for. The seats aren’t that long, at 1.52m (5ft), so lounging here is more comfortable than lying with feet overhanging and resting against a wheel pedestal.

The windlass is set below deck level but there is room for the chain to fall without piling up. The pop-up cleats look good, but there isn’t a fair lead from the bow roller to a cleat; the cheek of the roller and leg of the pulpit get in the way. These cleats could also do with rubrails on the hull nearby, to protect the glassfibre from chafe when mooring to low pontoon cleats.

Access to the shower and toilet compartment in the heads requires needless effort, requiring those in need to walk around the door like a kissing gate, rather than straight through the doorway. The galley is a little small, but the saloon and cabins are all a decent size. The aft cabin especially has a vast berth, even with the rudder post taking space from the inboard far corner.

Would she suit you and your crew?

She’s designed for people who enjoy sailing, which might sound odd because, as readers of this fine publication we all enjoy sailing. But rather than just being out on the water, a Dehler owner will know about and feel the need to adjust sail shape. Whether they’ll be doing that cruising from port to port, on short-handed passage races or racing around the cans or daysailing with family at the weekend, it matters not, the Dehler 34 rewards those who like to tweak.

Many cruisers offer more living space, but they won’t be as swift or as enjoyable to sail. Dehler is known for fast cruisers with a comfortable motion under sail and it built that reputation on the first Dehler 34, thirty years ago. This 34 is true to the original in that she sails very well, has a good turn of speed, but is still comfortable enough to cruise with your friends or family without feeling like you’re on a racing yacht. She’s not extreme in any way; she’s a good-looking, quick and enjoyable boat to sail. What more could you ask for?

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Dehler 34 – test and review

Sailing the dehler 34 makes sam jefferson wonder why there aren’t more small cruiser-racers on the market.

When I was younger I hankered after a Sigma 33. As a modest man with modest means and needs the Swan 33 made a lot of sense. It was modestly quick, modestly good looking and modestly comfortable down below, but could take you across the Solent or an ocean. These days it is a bit old and tired, much like myself, and for some time there was a gap in the market that remained unfilled – until now with the arrival of the Dehler 34.

AMG_6936new copy

Say hello to the latest member of the Judel/Vrolijk family, and sibling to the 42 and 34. She ticks many of the same boxes as the Sigma 33. And is great looking, to boot.

The Dehler 34 is a 34ft cruiser/race, and a little lighter than a pure cruiser at 5.4t to 5.8t. She’s is strongly built with a solid hull/deck joint and carbon reinforcement, has a keel-stepped rig of decent proportions and comes with the choice of either a deep, T-shaped keel with a bulb or a choice of two L-shaped keels of different depths.

She has appreciably lower freeboard than an equivalent Hanse or Bavaria and I have always respected Judel/Vrolijk’s reluctance to whack a chine or two aft just for the hell of it. Combine that with an aggressive plumb bow, transom with almost no rake and a sleek, low coachroof and you have a thoroughly stylish little yacht.

AMG_0143cockpit

Twin wheels are standard, but there is a competition pack that has the option of tiller steering along with longer carbon-fibre spars and other weight-saving measures such as synthetic teak and doing away with the bathing platform.

AMG_0113wheels

Up forward you have the option of a short sprit with an integrated bow roller.

AMG_0124saloon

And because Dehler doesn’t feel the need to shoehorn two double cabins aft there’s a huge cockpit locker. The double berth is situated to starboard and is over half the width of the hull. Aside from that, the layout is pretty standard stuff with a double forward which – inevitably on a yacht of this size – is tapered quite a bit toward the bow.

AMG_6980 2outsailing

The steering was light and well balanced and when we tacked, she turned on her heel with all the sharpness and smartness of a tango dancer. My only real complaint was that she didn’t have any foot chocks for the helmsman. That said, the cockpit coamings were comfortably angled for hiking out.

On a beam reach she hit the high sevens with ease and carved past a number of other yachts as if they were at anchor.. Tacking back up the Hamble, we overhauled a yacht motoring home. That rather illustrated the point.

LOA: 35ft 1in (10.7m)

Beam : 11ft 8in (3.6m)

Draft: 6ft 4in (1.95m) (standard) 6ft 9in (2.1m) (competition) 5ft 1in (1.55m) (shallow)

Displacement: 5,450kg (13,100lb)

Sail area: 65m 2 Price: (base) £109,000 (exc VAT) (sailed) £133,000

ST’s Verdict

The Dehler 34 is a good yacht in a size bracket where there are precious few options if you are looking for a cruiser/racer. I’m not saying she’s spectacular, but she does everything she’s meant to do well. She’s fun to sail, well made and, in competition form, I’m sure she could be successfully campaigned. In standard form, she’s a great fast cruiser. Then there’s the price tag – that’s pleasingly modest too.

FEIG ELECTRONIC: Moscow-City Skyscrapers Streamline Parking Access and Control with Secure RFID

Feig electronic partners with isbc group to deploy ucode dna rfid security and parking access control solution in moscow business district.

Weilburg, Germany  — December 3,  2019  —  FEIG ELECTRONIC , a leading global supplier of radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and antennas with fifty years of industry experience, announces deployment of the UCODE DNA RFID security and parking contactless identification solution in the Moscow International Business Center, known as Moscow-City, one of the world’s largest business district projects.

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

sailboatdata dehler 34

Panoramic view of Moscow city and Moskva River at sunset. New modern futuristic skyscrapers of Moscow-City – International Business Center, toned

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

Partnering with ISBC and deploying FEIG Electronic RFID solutions, the Moscow International Business Center is delivering security and access control to its city center today, as it grows into the city of tomorrow.

About FEIG ELECTRONIC
