This is how much the yacht of King Juan Carlos of Spain costs

The yacht of King Juan Carlos I, the ‘Fortuna’ , is one of the most famous vessels in Spain. For decades it was one of the symbols of Spanish royalty, sailing countless crossings of the king in the Mediterranean during his years of reign.

This imposing vessel, built in 1997 in the Bazán shipyard in Cádiz, was a gift from a group of businessmen to the monarch for a value of around 18 million euros.

What was King Juan Carlos’ yacht ‘Fortuna’ like?

With a length of 41 meters and capacity for 8 passengers and 8 crew members, the ‘Fortuna’ captivated with its majesty and speed, being able to navigate at 130 km/h thanks to its powerful Rolls-Royce turbines.

Its luxurious interiors, with a spacious salon, dining room, and 4 double cabins, were witness to the King’s meetings and celebrations for more than 15 years.

After the abdication of Juan Carlos I in 2014, the yacht was returned to the Tourist and Cultural Foundation of the Balearic Islands, who sold it months later for only 2.2 million euros to the shipping company Balearia. A price considerably lower than when it was built, but which represented the end of a golden era for the royal vessel.

What is its current situation?

Since then, the ‘Fortuna’ has been renamed ‘Foners’ and has been for sale intermittently without any luck. Initially offered for €8 million in 2018, her price plummeted by half the following year in the absence of buyers.

In 2021 it returned to the market with a purchase price of 2.2 million, but no bidder was encouraged to acquire it.

Experts point out that, despite its glamorous history, Fortuna’s very high maintenance and operating costs have deterred potential new owners.

Its powerful engines consume fuel at a rate that is difficult to afford for private use. Moreover, after years of inactivity, it would require additional investment in renovations.

The king’s yacht, awaiting a new owner

For now, the historic ‘Fortuna’ of King Juan Carlos remains anchored in the port of Denia, a faded shadow of the majesty it once represented.

The high costs of its ownership and operation seem to have buried, at least for now, any chance of the yacht regaining its past glory by sailing the seas under a new owner. A melancholy end for a symbol of Spanish royalty.

King Gives Up Royal Yacht, but Donors Want It Back

By Raphael Minder

  • May 27, 2013

MADRID — In hard times like these, everyone has to make sacrifices. And King Juan Carlos of Spain wanted it known that he was doing his part, too.

Two weeks ago, the royal palace announced that “for austerity reasons,” the king would hand over to the government one of his most famous possessions, a $27 million, 136-foot yacht he received as a gift 13 years ago to replace one given to him by King Fahd, the former ruler of Saudi Arabia.

If only it were that easy.

On Monday, the gesture turned instead into an ownership battle after the businesspeople who paid for the yacht announced that if Juan Carlos did not want it, then they wanted it back. In a letter to the administrators of Spain’s national patrimony, the foundation representing the businesspeople emphasized that the gift had been made with the stipulation that the yacht be used by the king and members of his family.

The 35-ton aluminum yacht, Fortuna, is moored off the island of Majorca, where the royal family has a palace and vacations each summer. The 30 or so executives who contributed to its purchase include hotel owners and bankers with links to Majorca and other Balearic Islands, whose regional government contributed a small part of the cost of the yacht, too.

The gift was presented as a way of thanking the monarch for helping to promote Majorca, one of Spain’s major tourism destinations. But Majorca, too, seems to be a problem.

It has become the scene of a corruption case undermining the reputation of the royal family and centering on accusations that the king’s son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin , embezzled millions from lucrative contracts for sports events organized on behalf of regional politicians.

Last week, the Majorca-based judge who is leading the inquiry said he would investigate whether Princess Cristina, Mr. Urdangarin’s wife and the king’s younger daughter, had engaged in tax evasion or money-laundering.

Mr. Urdangarin has not been charged with any crime. But the case has intensified pressure on the monarchy at a time when the king’s popularity has fallen to record lows in opinion polls, and there have even been some calls for the king to abdicate in favor of his son, Crown Prince Felipe.

The king came to the throne in 1975, when the monarchy was reinstalled after the death of the dictator Gen. Francisco Franco, but as the head of one of Europe’s poorest royal families after decades in exile. Recently, however, as resentment has mounted here over high unemployment and cuts to social services by a government struggling to balance its budget, the family’s wealth has come under greater scrutiny.

It is not that the king, who is 75 and has had several health problems recently, would miss the Fortuna all that much; he made only one outing on the vessel in 2012. But a representative of the royal household said the yacht’s future was not for the palace to decide.

Carmen Matutes, the president of the foundation that is trying to reclaim the yacht, told the Spanish news media on Monday that her organization had no intention of keeping it, which is understandable. Just filling its fuel tanks costs more than $30,000, according to Spanish news reports. And then there is the crew.

THE KING OF SPAIN GIVES UP HIS PALMA-BASED ROYAL YACHT FORTUNA

King juan carlos last night announced that he is giving up his palma-based royal yacht and handing it over to the state..

Palma.—The 75-year-old king has had a spectacular fall from grace recently as scandals undermine public approval and his health weakens and last night the royal household announced that the crew of the Fortuna, which is based inside the Porto Pi naval base, has been told to stand down and that the king has no intention of it being used again by the royal family.

It will be handed over to the state. This is the third Spanish royal yacht and was built 12 years ago at a cost of 3'000 million pesetas, 18 million euros, by a group of 30 leading local and national businessmen and women who donated the yacht to the Balearic Tourism and Culture Foundation and part of the country's National Heritage.

It replaced the second Fortuna which had been a present from the Saudi Arabian King Fahd in 1979 to replace the original royal yacht of the same name which came into service in 1976 in Majorca where the Spanish royal family have traditionally spent their Easter and Summer holidays.

When the Fortuna was launched 12 years ago, it was one of the fastest yachts of its category but, due to the high running and maintenance costs, King Juan Carlos has used the yacht less and less over recent years.

The 41.5 metre yacht has a maximum speed of 65 knots and a highly sophisticated propulsion system with three Rolls Royce engines. Construction first began in 1997 at the Bazan shipyard in Cadiz and she took three years to complete. Inside she boasts a lounge, dining room, kitchen, four double bedrooms for eight guests and quarters for the eight-strong crew. For many years, the captain of the royal yacht was British and during the royal yacht's 12 years numerous members of royalty have been aboard including the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama and her youngest daughter Sasha as guests of the king and queen in 2010.

The last time the king went sailing aboard the Fortuna was on August 13 last year when he headed out alone with just the crew and moored up off Formentor, although other members of the royal family have used it more often. Sources familiar with palace thinking say the royal family is concerned about the decline in its popularity and is eager to avoid adding more uncertainty to the climate of crisis for ordinary Spaniards. The palace is monitoring public opinion extremely closely via social media and its own polls.

The king's image started to deteriorate with the investigation into his son-in-law's alleged embezzlement at the head of the not-for-profit Noos Foundation in 2011.

It plummeted in 2012 when it emerged that Juan Carlos had gone on an elephant-hunting trip to Africa just as the full force of Spain's economic crisis hit home. With one in four Spaniards living in poverty, the palace was exposed as hopelessly out of touch. The king made an unprecedented apology.

King Juan Carlos takes delivery of his new royal yacht

Spain's King Juan Carlos has had to wait almost 10 years for his new yacht but this summer he will finally be able to indulge his taste for speed on a floating pleasure palace.

The Fortuna was formally handed over earlier this week to a state body that owns royal palaces and other chattels, in a low key ceremony in Majorca, where the Spanish royals take their August break.

The 41-metre (136ft) yacht was described as "a formula one prototype, incorporating state of the art technology and prestige accoutrements" by Javier Arce, head of the state-owned shipyard that built it. It includes seven cabins, a specially commissioned portrait of the king and royal monogrammed linen.

The 3bn peseta (£11m) bill will not be footed by the Spanish taxpayer. Instead Majorca businessmen, mainly in the tourist industry, a couple of banks and utilities clubbed together to buy it. It was, they felt, a way of acknowledging the prestige King Juan Carlos brings the Balearic islands by holidaying there. The regional government chipped in £1.7m.

The new yacht's unveiling - elegant lines, gleaming decks and tinted windows - was greeted without demur by the Spanish press, which printed photographs and factual articles but no opinion. That reflects, in part, the circumspection always shown towards the royal family. Spain is not a profoundly monarchist country but King Juan Carlos is credited with safeguarding the democratic process and any attack on him is seen as a threat to Spain's hard won stability. The king himself has also chosen with care the moment to accept his new toy. In 1991, when Spain was sinking into recession and a series of financial corruption scandals were emerging, he refused a replacement yacht which had already been ordered.

Since then he has had to struggle on with the original Fortuna, a present from King Fahd of Saudi Arabia in 1979. Smaller and slower, it turned into a security threat, leaving the royals stranded at sea more than once.

However, a low key debate rumbled on, in marked contrast to the furore over Britannia's possible replacement. Proponents argued that a yacht was a useful public relations tool. Foreign dignitaries like President and Mrs Clinton, who enjoyed a day at sea on Fortuna with their daughter Chelsea in 1997, could be profitably entertained.

Opponents, including members of the Communist party and Republicans, criticised the king for accepting a gift from "a lobby group of businessmen" that included a German magnate, in keeping with a large German presence on Majorca.

But with the country enjoying an economic boom, Spaniards seem willing to indulge their monarch. They like the royals to be middle class but glamorous and forgive King Juan Carlos his occasional playboy tendencies.

Last summer, their pride was dented when the billionaire Miller family, in-laws of the former King Constantine of Greece who is brother to the Spanish queen, floated around Majorca in their mega-yacht as did the Italian fashion designer Valentino who played host to top models. The king was reduced to racing on his catamaran.

There will be rich pickings too for Hola readers. Juan Carlos was once snapped sunbathing in the buff on the old Fortuna; Crown Prince Felipe was found frolicking in the waves with the only serious girlfriend he is known to have had. It's a fair bet that this year the paparazzi will be all at sea.

Spain's King Juan Carlos Gives Up Luxury Yacht 'Fortuna' As Country Faces Recession

fortuna yacht king of spain

Spain's King Juan Carlos is giving up a 21-million-euro ($27 million) yacht named Fortuna, officials say, as his subjects weather a biting recession and record unemployment.

The 41.5-metre (136-foot) yacht was donated in 2000 by a business group but left the king open to criticism during hard times in Spain. Each refuelling of the yacht costs more than 20,000 euros, according to the Spanish press.

The group, the Tourism and Cultural Foundation of the Balearic Islands, had said it hoped the king's presence in the Mediterranean archipelago would draw holidaymakers.

Like other assets including the royal palaces, the luxury yacht is owned by the state and managed by the National Heritage for the use of the 75-year-old king and his family.

But the king has taken sail with the yacht less frequently in recent years, making his last outing in August last year.

"The king has taken the decision to ask the National Heritage to proceed with the release of the asset," a spokesman for the institution said late Thursday.

The National Heritage board must now approve the yacht's transfer to the government, which could decide to keep it or sell it.

Juan Carlos won wide respect in Spain for helping guide it through a political transition after the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975.

But polls show public confidence in the royal family slumping as people smart from severe cuts to welfare, a double-dip recession and an unemployment rate of more than 27 percent.

The king's son-in-law, former Olympic handball player Inaki Urdangarin is engulfed in a corruption probe over a non-profit institution he ran from 2004-2006 and his wife -- the king's younger daughter Cristina -- is at risk of being dragged into the affair.

The king provoked outrage among Spaniards in April last year when he took a luxury elephant-hunting safari in Botswana in the midst of the economic crisis. The holiday was only discovered when the king broke his hip and had to return to Spain for treatment, leading the monarch to issue an unprecedented apology.

Donators want royal yacht returned

Businessmen disagree with decision to pass on vessel to the spanish government.

The Fortuna yacht, which was given as a gift to King Juan Carlos.

A group of wealthy businessmen who chipped in 600,000 euros each to buy King Juan Carlos a yacht want it back, now that the Spanish monarch has decided not to use it any more to save the government money .

In a meeting on Monday, the group of donators decided to ask the government to give them back the Fortuna, because it was supposed to be for the king's use only. The 41.5-meter-long vessel was given to the king in 2000.

Earlier this month, the monarch announced his decision to give the yacht to the Spanish government, because “it makes no sense” to keep it when all of Spain’s institutions are being forced to set examples of austerity. Filling up the yacht’s fuel tanks alone costs over 20,000 euros.

The Cabinet is due to decide whether to keep or sell the vessel.

PALMER JOHNSON Yachts – Operating Since 1918

Palmer Johnson is one of the iconic yacht builders to emerge from the Americas. The company is located in the Great Lakes region in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

The company constructs high-end performance yachts up to 81.4m, with showrooms in Fort Lauderdale and Monaco.

Once highly regarded, they built famous vessels, such as the Fortuna for the King of Spain, and the Turmoil, an explorer vessel that sailed the globe three times.

PALMER yachts history

In 1918, Hans Johnson and Herman Gmack founded Palmer Johnson under the original name Sturgeon Bay Boat Works.

The boatyard specialized in repairing rowing boats and commercial fishing vessels in the 1920s.

In 1928, they launched their first wooden yacht and became known for building high-end wooden sailing yachts. Hans’ son, Palmer Johnson, takes over the company in the same year.

As with many companies with a 100-year history, Palmer Johnson went through hard times and prosperous times.

The WWII period was a particularly good time for business for Palmer Johnson as they built over forty 45-foot air-sea rescue boats and four “T” class freighters.

In 1956, the shipbuilding company was sold and renamed after the founder’s son, Palmer Johnson.

Throughout the 1960s and into the next four decades, Palmer Johnson was at the forefront of innovative yacht construction using aluminum.

The company delivered FIREBIRD just a few short years after this shift to aluminum yacht construction. FIREBIRD was the world’s largest aluminum sailing yacht at the time of her launch, a 25.6m ketch.

FORTUNA soon surpassed this record in 1979. FORTUNA was King Juan Carlos of Spain’s 30.5m yacht.

FORTUNA held the title of the fastest yacht globally for over a decade as she could reach the incredible top speed of 46 knots, which was unheard of at the time.

Celebrating its 80th anniversary, Palmer Johnson launched LA BARONESSA, a 59.5m all-aluminum yacht, the largest in the USA, in 1998.

In 2003, Timur Mohamed bought the stagnant Palmer Johnson Yachts after purchasing his 120-foot yacht, the Cover Drive, from the shipbuilders.

The English businessman purchased it as the company had experienced several unproductive years.

In 2004, the company burst back onto the shipbuilding scene when it introduced its popular SportYacht series under its new owner’s direction.

The series featured exterior and interior designs from Nuvolari Lenard, the major yacht design company renowned worldwide.

In 2012, Palmer Johnson introduced the new carbon-fiber SuperSport performance. The SuperSport was a new carbon fiber performance model.

Unfortunately, this series was launched in a different economic climate and didn’t reach the success of their SportYacht series.

Notable launches

Palmer Johnson has several other notable launches besides its most iconic launches like the FORTUNA and LA BARONESSA.

In 2007, the 41.5m PJ 135 SportYacht Dragon was launched. The superyacht rose to international acclaim with a maximum speed of 30 knots.

Although Palmer Johnson struggled to keep traction in the yacht market after 2012, an ongoing project in partnership with Bugatti is a point of interest for yacht fans.

A contract for thirty of the new PJ 48 Niniette and PJ 63 Niniette Open Sport series yachts has been signed, which amounts to EUR 40M for the yacht building company.

Palmer Johnson has a rich history in yacht building, with over 100 years of innovative yacht building that will hopefully continue with the new Niniette model.

A Recession Casualty – King Juan Carlos of Spain Giving Up Luxury Yacht “Fortuna”

Published May 22, 2013 · Updated November 26, 2014

Fortuna yacht

Sometimes even kings are not immune to the recession and economic hardship. One of the surprising cutbacks is that King Juan Carlos of Spain is relinquishing his approximately, 21 million-euro ($27 million) yacht – tiled “ Fortuna .”

As the European country of Spain continues to battle the never-ending recession and record unemployment, hard choices must continue to be made.

The Fortuna yacht is similar to other assets such as the royal palaces, which are owned by the state and managed by the National Heritage for the use of the 75-year-old king and his family.

Fortuna is 41.5-metre (136-foot) in length and was donated back in 2000 by a business group. It’s costly to maintain in addition to taking it out on the Mediterranean. According to the Spanish press, each sailing costs more than 20,000 euros for each refuelling.

Last week, a spokesman for the institution was quoted “The king has taken the decision to ask the National Heritage to proceed with the release of the asset,” said late Thursday.

The next step is the National Heritage board needs to approve the King Juan Carlos yacht’s transfer back to the government. The next choice would be to keep the luxury yacht or to sell Fortuna .

It was put on the market as a sign of solidarity by the king, to show his appreciation for the harsh austerity measures and rising unemployment rates facing his fellow Spaniards.

But it seems times are so austere that those selling King Juan Carlos's luxury royal yacht have had to slash its asking price - by nearly 20 per cent.

Fortuna, a 136ft motor boat used exclusively by the Spanish Royal Family and their guests - which has in the past included Princess Diana and Prince Charles - has had its price dropped from £8.1m to £6.6m.

The boat, which remains moored off the island of Majorca, where the royal family has a palace and goes on holiday each summer, was gifted to the state by around 30 executives with links to Majorca and other Balearic Islands in a bid to promote the islands.

But King Juan Carlos - who announced last week that he plans to abdicate to make way for his son Prince Felipe - was forced to renounce the use of the yacht, after coming under fire for going on an elephant safari in Bostwana in 2012, while the Spanish economy plunged further into crisis.

The holiday came just weeks after the monarch - who won wide respect in Spain for helping guide it through a political transition after the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975 - claimed to be 'kept awake at night by the plight of the Spain's youth unemployed'.

But after the king announced he would hand over his prized possession, the group who bestowed the yacht, the Foundation of Balearic Culture and Tourism, said they wanted it back.

In a letter explaining their claim, they stressed that the gift had been given with the understanding that the yacht be used exclusively by the royal family.

Now the 140-tonne vessel, which was originally put on the market for the equivalent of €10m, has been reduced to €8.25m.

Arrival Yachts, the agency managing the sale, said the price had been dropped as part of its strategy to indicate the seller's wish to negotiate and not because there was a lack of interest. It said all serious offers would now be considered.

The boat, which is said to be more like an aircraft in design, was named as the fastest in the world of its type in 2000 when it reached 68 knots.

As well as a plush interior and a lavish deck which boasts 360 degree views out to sea, anyone buying the boat will also be able to count themselves in good company.
