Bannenberg & Rowell Design

A luxury yacht and jet design company based in London’s Fulham. Headed up by Dickie Bannenberg, son of the great Jon Bannenberg, the studio is renowned for creative, contemporary and approachable design – both interior and exterior.

Espen Oeino

Under the leadership of the eponymous Norwegian naval architect, Espen Oeino International has been designing iconic superyacht interiors and exteriors since the 1990s. Based in Monaco the studio has worked with Burgess on several projects, most notably the 72m Trinity Yachts-built ALBATROSS and the 156m Lurssen DILBAR, the largest yacht afloat by volume.

H2 Yacht Design

Jonny Horsfield established H2 Yacht design in London in 1994. Today it is a multi-disciplined exterior and interior styling team that has earned a reputation for challenging conventions in yacht design. The studio has so far collaborated on five projects with Burgess, most recently with Heesen.

Harrison Eidsgaard

International yacht designers and architects, Harrison Eidsgaard Design is headed up by its three partners, Peder and Ewa Eidsgaard and Ben Harrison. Undertaking both exterior and interior styling, the studio’s most notable yachts to date include the award-winning TANGO and ELANDESS, the latter being the studio’s first project with Burgess.

Jonathan Quinn Barnett leads a talented team of award-winning yacht designers. Established in 1995, the studio has created original exterior yacht designs and interior architecture for discerning clients in the luxury marketplace. With a critical eye on proportion and detail, designs of distinction associated with Burgess include the interior of OCTOPUS and popular charter yacht MUCHOS MAS.

Michael Leach Design

Established in 1997 by Mick Leach with Mark Smith joining in 1999, MLD is an multi award-winning design practice specialising in marine, aviation and residential projects. With over 60 years’ industry experience collectively, having worked in various top design offices, MLD is now established as one of the industry’s leading and most successful design offices.

Reymond Langton Design

Headed up by design duo Pascale Reymond and Andrew Langton, the London-based studio was founded in 2001. The studio has since delivered 28 motor and sailing yachts, including the 134m SERENE, the largest yacht built in Italy at that time. Originally based in London, the studio’s HQ has since moved to the historic city of Bath.

Situated in the stunning surrounds of Beaulieu in the New Forest, RWD is best known for the design of superyachts such as motor yacht HASNA and sailing yacht TWIZZLE. Founded in 1993, RWD has to date completed six collaborative projects with Burgess.

Sorgiovanni Designs

Established by yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni in 1997, the eponymous design studio is based in Perth, Australia, and undertakes both exterior and interior designs. The studio’s unique location lends a point of difference to its body of work and it has become well-known for designing superyachts with an exotic feel, as well as great attention to detail.

Terence Disdale Design

Terence Disdale Design is an award-winning design studio located in London, and responsible for the interior and exterior design of the some of the world's most significant yachts. Renowned for a ‘beach house’ style, the studio’s most notable yachts include ECLIPSE and PELORUS, and it has no fewer than 10 collaborative projects with Burgess to date.

Tim Heywood Design

A multi-award-winning exterior yacht designer, Tim Heywood Design has produced some of the largest yachts on water, including the 133m AL MIRQAB. Located in Hampshire, the eponymous yacht designer cut his teeth under the guidance of Jon Bannenberg and in the 40 years since has completed six collaborative projects with Burgess.

Winch Design

A full-service award-winning British design and architecture studio specialising in the exterior and interior styling of motor and sailing yachts, aircraft, residential and commercial properties, Winch Design was established in 1986 and has to date completed seven collaborative projects with Burgess.

New Yacht Construction

Yacht Refit

A yacht refit offers a good alternative to new construction, allowing owners to find a yacht for sale on the brokerage market and make it their own. There are many previously owned yachts that have excellent bones and simply need a little love to make them shine like new. This could include a more extensive rebuild for the owner who enjoys a project, or a much simpler refresh of the interior design to fit your style preferences and make the yacht truly your own.

The New Build Process

The saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” applies to yacht purchases. Of course, you should keep your aesthetic preferences in mind and communicate these to your broker, but don’t be afraid to check out other yachts your broker recommends – the amenities found onboard just might surprise you and make you glad you had a look.

Exclusively Representing Admiral Yachts in the Americas

Frank Grzeszczak Sr. is Head of Sales for the Americas with the prestigious Marina di Carrara-based shipyard The Italian Sea Group. He represents exclusively their Admiral Yachts brand in the Americas, including North, Central, and South America. Over the years, the yard has invested heavily in its facilities in Italy, creating a state-of-the-art site that builds custom yachts of up to 650 feet (200m). Located near northern Tuscany’s Forte dei Marmi, Admiral has one of the largest dry docks in the Mediterranean, as well as a full offering of key services in-house from carpentry to furniture and leather projects. All this has been undertaken with the ambition of producing the best yachts in the world. Admiral offers 11 different series in steel and aluminum build materials, with models between 120 feet (37m) and 475 feet (145m) in planning, semi-displacement, and displacement hulls.

Building a custom yacht is a major project that requires close supervision, high attention to detail and  strong connections with shipyards , designers and contractors in the industry. When you choose to work with Luxe Yacht Empire on a new build superyacht, you are in good hands.

Luxe Yacht Empire employs a team of experts across all fields, including Naval Architects, Marine Engineers and Technical Managers with an excess of 30 years of experience in new builds.

Your Luxe Yacht Empire project manager will work closely with the owner throughout the New Build process, acting as a liaison between all parties involved, to ensure efficiency, adherence to the specification and the yacht’s timely delivery.

From the very start, we will help put the yacht vision into a brief, select the right shipyard and negotiate favourable contract terms. Clients may have a particular yard in mind, or we can suggest a short list based on key requirements. We will also work closely with the selected design team to make sure design proposals meet the vision.

Our team of experts  will provide technical consultation throughout the construction phase until the completion of the delivery sea trials. Even after the yacht is delivered, our team will be available to coordinate the execution of the necessary guarantee works, always keeping in mind the yacht owner’s best interests.

THE CONCEPT

Our team of experts will help you articulate your vision and put together a comprehensive and thorough brief to create your yacht. FORMULATING THE CONTRACT

As soon as the shipyard has been selected, we will assist you throughout the negotiations and contract phase. As this phase is the most critical step for a successful project, the Luxe Yacht Empire new build team will provide feedback on the specifications, the general arrangement and the contract. Key contractual elements, such as budget allowances, noise and vibration levels, delays, penalties and more, will be diligently negotiated with the shipyard.

Working closely with your selected design team, Luxe Yacht Empire will make sure all yacht design proposals are in line with your vision, functional for everyday life at sea, and in line with specifications and maritime regulations. If you do not have a designer in mind, we can work with you and the yard to suggest a shortlist.

NEW BUILD PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Your Luxe Yacht Empire Project Management Team will be available around the clock throughout the construction of your new build project, acting as a liaison with the shipyard, designers, naval architects and all other parties involved. Our goal is to ensure the process is efficient, cost-effective and according to your preferences, ensuring no surprises. We will closely monitor the project, making sure timelines are met and help resolve any challenges that may arise.

SEA TRIALS & YACHT DELIVERY

Before the yacht is delivered, our team of experts will attend the yacht’s sea trials, a critical step before the completion of the new build project. During the sea trials, our team’s meticulous attention to detail will find any technical issues that need to be addressed or fine tunings that need to be made before delivering your yacht in the best working condition.

AFTER SALES SUPPORT

Once construction is complete it is time to enjoy your yacht. But, even after the yacht is delivered, your project manager will be available to coordinate the necessary guarantee works always securing the yacht owner’s best interests.

The Latest Trends in New Building

More dedicated beach club space.

A closer connection with the sea brings a new perspective to the onboard yachting experience, which is why, over the past few years, yacht designers and shipyards have made moves to refresh the superyacht beach club area. They’ve achieved this by dedicating more space and functionality to the stern of the vessel. The  I talian yard Sanlorenzo, for example, created a sensation in 2017 with the launch of its first Sanlorenzo 52 Steel, Seven Sins. The yacht boasts an expansive beach club with gym, sauna and counterflow current pool. The deck area further extends with lateral folding platforms. Within traditional yacht design, the stern area has served as tender and toy storage. The philosophy behind a larger beach club is to enable guests to directly access the sea from an entertainment-focused platform. It also delivers easier access to watersports, as exemplified by the Benetti Oasis 40m and Azimut Grande 38 Trideck. Today, when it comes to custom yacht projects and new yacht construction, greater space and attention is given to the beach club area during the initial design phase. Both Benetti’s Luminosity and Oceanco’s Keos are two examples of generously proportioned beach clubs on fully custom yachts.

LARGER EXPANSES OF GLASS

The use of structural and decorative glass in yacht design has grown exponentially. It exemplifies technical ingenuity within new yacht building and amplifies the feeling of space on board. It also strengthens our connection with the outdoors and has driven creativity with glass being used in a variety of different areas. Primarily, glass is a simple yet attractive way to increase natural light in a yacht interior, but it also affords yacht designers the opportunity to create original concepts that cultivate unique shapes and curves. Thanks to advanced innovations made by glass suppliers, yacht builders can now incorporate super-sized glazing on board superyachts, including floor-to-ceiling windows, glass-encased stairways, enlarged portholes, glass infinity pools and even underwater observation lounges. Two significant yacht builds that stand out for their inventive use of glass are  Feadship’s  Venus and  Nobiskrug’s  Artefact.

GROWING POPULARITY OF MULTIHULLS

Multihull yachts are renowned for their stability and wide deck spaces and have gained popularity marked by the arrival of larger new-build yachts. The most popular type of multihull is the catamaran, followed by the trimaran, which suits both motor yachts and sailing vessels. Polish catamaran yacht builder Sunreef Yachts turned heads with the launch of its Sunreef 80 model in 2018, creating renewed demand for multihull pleasure crafts. Other builders operating in the multihull category include Silent Yachts and Alva Yachts. Shipyards like JFA Yachts, Two Oceans Marine and Lagoon Yachts have all delivered catamarans in recent years, and even builders who previously focused on monohull yachts now build catamaran: SilverYachts with SpaceCat, the first WiderCat from Italian yard Wider Yachts, and McConaghy Boats is building its MC82p in Australia. In the larger size range, The Italian Sea Group has two large catamaran projects under construction: Perini Navi’s Art Explorer and Tecnomar’s Project Innovation. In addition, several yacht builders have seized the opportunity to build large catamaran support vessels, such as Echo Yachts, Astilleros Armon and Dunya Yachts.

CROSSOVER YACHT MODELS

Following the worldwide popularity of explorer yachts and support vessels witnessed in recent years, some yacht builders have introduced crossover models for yachts in a smaller size range. By combining the comfort of a superyacht with larger storage space on the aft deck, an industrial expedition-style boat has emerged. The crossover yacht gifts owners the opportunity to acquire a smaller yacht with greater storage capacity for tenders and toys. They can also be used as shadow supply vessels for larger vessels. This is the case for Phi Phantom built by Alia Yachts and Roe Shadow delivered by Dutch shipyard Lynx Yachts. Fellow Dutch yacht builder, Holterman Shipyard, unveiled its X-treme Yachts brand with the launch of its X-treme 105 model, while Italian shipyard Canados Yachts has its Oceanic line represented by the Oceanic 100 Shadow.

MORE SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIONS

Growing environmental concerns and new regulations continue to encourage shipyards to reviewing their building practices. It’s essential that yachts comply with new industry standards, and this applies across the board, from design and propulsion to reduced gas emissions. Assisted by yacht class surveyors and in response to clients’ requests for increased sustainability, shipyards are mindful to select materials with good environmental credentials. They achieve this by collaborating with like-minded designers and eco-friendly suppliers, such as eco-friendly paints, recycled insulation, synthetic teak decking and renewable materials. To reduce a yachts’ environmental impact, efforts are concentrated on reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Hybrid propulsion systems are a preferred method for reaching that goal, for example, Sanlorenzo installed Volvo Penta’s IPS propulsion system on its SX88 and SX112 models. The benefits include speed efficiency, longer cruising ranges, and reduced noise, fuel consumption and emissions.

SUPPORT YACHT VESSELS

The trend for exploration in remote territories has transformed the use of supply vessels once exclusively built for commercial purposes into support boats for yachting. Prized for their storage capacity and alluring flexibility with more garage and/or deck space, support boats can store far more tenders and toys compared to a traditional superyacht layout. Using large on-deck heavy-lifting cranes, small motorboats and sailing boats can be embarked alongside submarines and other common tenders and toys. Dutch builder Damen Yachting became a leader in the support yacht segment by adapting its commercial vessels to the superyacht market. For some superyacht owners, converting a commercial ship that has a large load capacity into a yacht support vessel is also an attractive option, and one that Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts and Kleven Maritime in Norway specialize in.

Phases of a new build

The construction of a new yacht is an exciting and rewarding process, requiring careful planning and attention to detail. While each new construction and shipyard will be unique, they follow a similar approach.

Design and planning

This is the first and most crucial phase of any new build. Our team will work closely with you to determine your needs and preferences. We will need to discuss your specific requirements: What kind of build do you want? Where do you plan to cruise? What kind of performance will your vessel need? What spaces and amenities do you envision having aboard?

We will then advise which shipyards, architects and designers are the most suitable for your project and work with them to create a customized design to meet your needs.

Hull construction

Once the design is finalized, hull construction begins. Our team will liaise with your chosen shipyard to ensure that high-quality materials and advanced construction techniques are used to create a strong and durable hull that will withstand the rigors of the sea. Throughout the hull construction phase, we closely communicate with the shipyard to monitor progress and ensure the work is carried out to your specifications.

Interior and deck construction

With the hull complete, the focus shifts to the interiors and deck spaces. Skilled artisans will install wiring, plumbing and other systems and create the various rooms and interior and exterior living spaces.

Sea trials and delivery

Yacht design

What sort of build are you interested in? You have options.

Generally, there are three kinds of builds, each with pros and cons. They depend on the level of customization you’d like.

Production builds are usually part of a line of pre-designed vessels. They often have standard features and accessories and offer the least customizability. They usually are the fastest to deliver and the least expensive option but can be hard to modify or upgrade after purchase. However, because they are pre-designed, they’re a proven platform with demonstrated quality.

Semi-custom

Semi-custom builds are a compromise between production and fully custom builds. They offer many customizable opportunities—particularly concerning interior and exterior décor, design, appliances and finishes—and allow the owner to be closely involved in the build. Like production builds, they are part of a pre-designed line, expediting build time and reducing costs and risk.

Entirely custom builds are naturally the most expensive and time-intensive option. However, nothing is off limits, from the size and layout to amenities, interior and exterior design and technical specifications.

I n the world of luxury boats, where the affluent play with luxurious superyachts, a new hot spot is emerging. As more people crave owning or renting luxury yachts, let’s take a look at what’s happening in Southeast Asia, where things are getting fancier by the day.

Southeast Asia is fast becoming the go-to destination for those who crave the finer things in life, and it’s no surprise that the luxury yacht market projections are cresting at a remarkable USD 1,249.5 million by 2028. Nestled within Asia Pacific’s expansive 135,000-kilometre coastline, this region has all the makings of a maritime paradise. The flourishing post-Covid tourism industry, drawing travelers to its pristine islands, is setting the stage for a yacht renaissance. As if that weren’t enough, rising living standards and escalating incomes across Southeast Asian nations have ignited an insatiable demand for the crème de la crème of luxury resources among the nouveau riche and the generationally wealthy.

Read on, as we navigate the currents of emerging luxury yacht trends —unearthing how Southeast Asia is rapidly establishing itself as the world’s hottest docking port for an elite circle who simply cannot resist the siren call of luxury.

1. The rise of disposable incomes among Asians in a post-Covid era

For most Asian buyers, buying a superyacht is not just for entertainment, it’s an investment. “Over the past few years and following pandemic travel restrictions, there’s been an increased desire to explore the world’s hidden, most exotic corners and discover Southeast Asia’s untapped beauty, with many High Net Worth travellers choosing to do so by yacht for utmost comfort, privacy, and control,” says Advait Deodhar, Senior Yacht Sales and Charter Broker, TJB Super Yachts .

The rising disposable income is propelling the Asia Pacific luxury yacht market growth. Eric Noyel, Founder of Asia Marine and Managing Director of Fraser Asia, saw this trend reflected in sales. In his interview with SuperYatch Times, he opened up about the growth he had witnessed in emergent Southeast Asian markets. “Hong Kong has been crazy for the last two years. 500 new boats arrived – mostly Italian and American – and were sold in the city. There have been record sales across the board for yacht brokers in Hong Kong. I’d say that we’ve had the equivalent of 20 years’ worth of sales in the last two years,” he said.

Across the peninsula, India showed signs of becoming the world’s third-largest economy by 2027, surpassing Japan and Germany, reported Morgan Stanley . The rise in wealth has been synchronous with the rise in disposable incomes — consequently resulting in the growth of the luxury yacht market. “My millennial client percentage has increased substantially this year and I would say about 33 to 35 percent of my clients are millennials,” says Deodhar, who personally completed a total of 56 charters in 2022, with superyachts up to 325 feet in length.

For Thailand and Singapore, the luxury yacht markets are blooming, ever so in the post-Covid era. “In Thailand, the number of charter yachts of 30-45m has more than doubled over the past five years. Although many of the yachts are a bit older, they are usually extremely well-maintained with their interiors and furnishings regularly updated,” Lies Sol, Charter Manager at Northrop and Johnson told The Singapore Yacht Show.

What is the driving factor behind this luxury yacht trend in Southeast Asia?

In Southeast Asia, superyachts are mostly used for relaxation, discovery, and diving. In the past, yachting was associated with building a larger-than-life status and entertaining wealthy guests but today, the focus has shifted to genuine pleasure usage, enjoying with family and friends, the rise in water sports, and in an increasing number of cases, regional cruising. “80% of our charter guests request a diving instructor or PADI school on board. From manta rays to whale sharks, the natural sea life in Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines are unparalleled,” Deodhar adds.

Superyacht charters in Southeast Asia might tend to be of the same duration as they are in Europe currently, but the average trip has increased by a few days as compared to what it was five years ago. “Many of the yachting locations in Southeast Asia take longer to get to, particularly the likes of Raja Ampat – a journey which requires a charter flight and seaplane, so our guests prefer to spend longer on board in order to recover from jet lag and make the most of the destination,” Advait tells us.

2. Emerging destinations for a luxury yachting experience in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia houses thousands of island destinations across the Pacific Ocean, where tourism is the major economy in itself. The rise in tourism on these islands has boosted the demand for luxury yachts in the region. Governments across these oceanic nations have also identified the potential for attracting wealthy tourists who are looking for a thrilling high-sea adventure. To attract more billionaires to a life of luxury maritime experiences, several yacht shows have been popping up in recent times that bring together professionals and consumers from various industries under one roof. In a similar grain, shows in Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong have seen successful iterations in the past couple of years with High Net Worth (HNW) individuals flocking to gauge the emerging market.

Among the charter segment, luxury yacht trends in Southeast Asia point to a few hidden gems. “Our clients are increasingly keen to discover the waters around Sumba Island – one of the most remote and unspoiled areas of Indonesia, which has been developing over the past few years with five-star hotels. Likewise, the Bay of Saleh has world-renowned whale shark-watching opportunities. Palawan in the Philippines is also seeing increased demand from yacht owners and charterers – it’s particularly popular amongst honeymooners due to its natural beauty, pristine beaches, and crystal clear waters, but also offers a vibrant social scene on the surrounding islands to enable guests to strike a balance,” Deodhar reveals from experience.

Malaysia is also seeing growth – from Langkawi to Penang, the islands offer idyllic coves and bays. With a plethora of world-class luxury hotels, the country has always been a popular travel destination by land – with stunning jungles, groves, and mountains to discover. The same can be said about Thailand, which saw 11.4 million foreign tourists arriving from January to June 11 2023 alone. The estimated spending accounted for THB 472 billion (USD 3.67 billion), revealed the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

3. Size and construction trends among luxury yachts in Southeast Asia

Asia, with its rich history and melting pot of religions and beliefs, poses a different kind of challenge. Here, cultural preferences and influences play a large part in the purchasing decision. In an industry dominated by European and American brands, ensuring their relevance to Asia and Asian buyers has become crucial for local manufacturers and designers. “In countries such as China, Singapore, and Hong Kong, for example, Feng Shui is very important. However, Feng Shui is not so well understood by Western yacht designers and we need to help designers understand it more. • If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

I went on a beautiful sunset cruise for a fundraiser. Saw the National Mall from the Potomac at night, it was stunning! The crew members were polite and courteous. The boat docked with a large party group before our group and you would never have known there was another group on 5 minutes before because the boat was spotless.

A luxury boat that flies above water instead of on it has gone up for sale – for more than £2.1million.

Debuted during the Cannes Film Festival nearly a year ago, THE ICON showcased its ability to fly about one meter over water, ‘feeling no wave impact at all’, according to BMW , which developed it along with boat manufacturer TYDE.

THE ICON is the world’s first battery-powered vessel of its kind that is emission-free and high-end, said BMW when it was unveiled last May.

‘Up to now, marine electric mobility has been restricted to smaller, slower craft with comparatively little range, and the segment for faster boats with longer range is dominated by models with combustion engines,’ stated the manufacturer.

‘THE ICON redefines this relationship between the dimensions, top speed, and range of an electrically powered watercraft.’

It features large glass surfaces accentuated with LED light strips through which passengers can view the water directly. Its angled glass doors lead to a lounge with ‘a luxurious carpet that creates a kaleidoscope effect’, according to BMW.

THE ICON has a connection to composer Hans Zimmer , whose latest project is titled The Icon. The producer behind tracks for The Lion King and Batman and James Bond films has created a soundtrack personally tailored for the boat. The music matches THE ICON’s appearance and feel and changes with the drive note and functionality, WhatsTheJam reported.

YachtWorld has listed the ‘2023 Custom Tyde THE ICON’ as a new arrival, priced at £2,149,770. It’s location is disclosed as Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

The boat is 13.15 meters long, has 295hp and 250 engine hours and can carry up to seven people.

‘Covering distances in elevated style. This is a new level of smooth elegance – a luxurious ride experience with panoramic sea views,’ states the listing.

Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.

As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."

A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.

That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.

"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.

Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.

Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.

"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.

One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.

At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.

"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.

If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.

Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.

"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.

Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."

“With over $50 million already in contract, buyers are responding with resounding positivity for the quality of the residences,” Hadi added. “We have many prospects who are rightsizing from large estates and realizing that Rosewood Residences Beverly Hills is the only fully-serviced condominium that can deliver an estate alternative with incomparable privacy and an unmatched indoor/outdoor living and entertaining experience.” 

All of the homes feature direct elevator access, large entry foyers, and oversized kitchens by Molteni&C. Plus, buyers will find custom hardware, top-of-the-line appliances, wide-plank white oak floors, and Venetian plaster walls. Elsewhere, the bedroom suites are decked out with walk-in closets, and the primary bathrooms sport underfloor heating, marble vanities, and hand-finished cast iron soaking tubs. Most notable, six out of the 17 units have the added perks of a private pool and spa tub, an outdoor kitchen and sprawling terraces for alfresco dining.

Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg reportedly flew to Panama to celebrate his 40th birthday — where the billionaire’s alleged brand-new $300 million superyacht was docked.

Zuckerberg, who has been linked to the 387-foot-long vessel called “Launchpad” for months but has never publicly confirmed whether he is the owner, traveled to the Central American nation on Monday by private jet, according to tracking data viewed by Business Insider .

Launchpad and its smaller companion vessel, Wingman, were also docked in Panama on the same day, the outlet said, citing ship-tracking data.

Adding fuel to the rumors, Zuckerberg posted a video of himself on what appeared to be a private plane on Instagram. Captioned, “Travel mode: on,” the video showed Zuckerberg wearing the Meta Quest 3 virtual-reality headset while en route to his destination.

While the exact whereabouts of Zuckerberg and his expensive fleet of travel options are difficult to confirm, the coincidences raise the possibility that the billionaire celebrated Tuesday’s milestone birthday aboard the vessel.

Zuckerberg currently ranks as the fourth-richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $167 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index .

It is said to be the 46th largest ship of its kind in the world, with a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure.

The party boat was built by Dutch firm Feadship and features exterior design by Espen Øino International and interior design by France-based Zuretti Interior Design, according to SuperYachtTimes.

Launchpad requires a whopping $30 million in annual upkeep, according to the SuperYacht Fan blog .

It can purportedly house up to 24 guests and 48 crew members.

The annual Dragon Boat Festival is a cultural and historic occasion in Singapore hallmarked with traditions that go back over 2,000 years to the Warring States Period in China. These include the time-worn practice of dragon boat races, along with far more enjoyable feasts centred around rice dumplings — hefty parcels of glutinous rice, stuffed with luxe ingredients like salted egg yolk, beans, nuts, meat and seafood, wrapped in bamboo or lotus leaves, then steamed or boiled until everything comes together into a delicious mound. As the story goes, the much-loved poet and court official Qu Yuan threw himself into Hunan province’s Miluo River as an act of protest against the rulers of the time. In a rush to save him, villagers piled onto long boats, paddled out into the middle of the river, and tossed rice dumplings in to draw the fish away from his body. But the leaf-wrapped snacks have come a long way since then. Komatsu launches first ever electric drilling, bolting rigs.

Komatsu just launched its first-ever electric underground drilling and bolting rigs, signaling a new beginning for the Japanese construction giant’s hard rock mining portfolio.

Part of a broader range of updates and options for the second-generation of Komatsu ‘s Z2 line of small-class development drill and bolting equipment that includes an innovative resin-pumping system, optimized cabin ergonomics for the operator, and more advanced telematics, the all-electric versions of the Komatsu ZJ21 jumbo drill and ZB21 are (like their predecessors) built on a common platform. That platform features a modular battery driveline that’s been specially designed to withstand the demanding duty cycles and challenging of hard rock mining.

“As underground mining operations increasingly shift toward electrification of their fleets, our innovative, battery-powered Z2 jumbo drills and bolters will support that pivotal transition. By integrating into existing infrastructure, we can help enhance productivity while helping to reduce operating costs,” said Johan Kempe, product director for underground drilling at Komatsu. “The rollout of our second generation Z2-class marks a milestone in our commitment to advancing mining technologies and building upon the proven success of our products to empower the future of mine operators.”

ZB21 bolter

The new Komatsu ZB21 is a small-class bolter featuring a fully enclosed ROPS/FOPS-certified operator cabin with updated operator controls, integrated screen handling, and industry-leading drifters manufactured by Montabert.

The second-generation bolter also introduces an optional pumpable resin system using J-LOK P developed by Jennmar. Komatsu says this unique solution pumps into the drilled hole prior to bolt installation, permitting the use of more economical (read: cheaper) bolts and driving down overall project cost.

ZJ21 electric drill

The updated ZJ21 jumbo drill, which shares a number of modular components with the ZB21, features a similar operator cabin, innovative drilling feeds, advanced pilot hydraulics, and the same, new Montabert drifters.

Both vehicles feature an 83 kWh li-ion battery pack presumably developed in concert with American Battery Solutions (ABS), which Komatsu acquired late last year . That purchase was part of a company-wide effort to help Komatsu achieve its stated ESG goals. Those being: a 50% reduction of CO2 emissions from the use of its products by 2030 (compared to 2010 levels) and company-wide carbon neutrality by 2050.

Electrek’s Take

Komatsu says its BEVs are designed to increase productivity compared to diesel through a mix of onboard charging, smart opportunistic charging capabilities, and 100% compatibility with existing infrastructure (translation: your accessories will fit). As for whether or not its new EVs will deliver – well, it’s hard to argue with Komatsu engineers. They’re smart, they’ve done the math, and they’ve built lithium-powered EVs specifically to mine for more lithium (again: smart ).

Here’s hoping we get to read about more EVs from Komatsu sooner than later, then.
