The 6 Metre

Some would say this is a gentlemen’s model yacht with all the beauty and grace of the full- sized racing yachts on which it is based. The concept of the full size 6 Metre class started in 1907 and it was continually updated, and it enjoyed some time as an Olympic class. In respect of the model yacht they are measured and perform just like the full – size version, they even wobble downwind when over pressed. They are quite heavy and are definitely not speed machines but have an appeal which is hard to resist if you get the opportunity to sail one. Currently at DMBC there are two distinct types racing, the version which has an integral fin keel and the other a detachable fin with wing keel. The former type like the Dolphin design is very elegant on the water and this year the class National Championships will have a new trophy for the winner of these vintage style boats. The latter type although still with appealing looks are built with performance in mind. The latest Ravenna, Rococo and Romanza designs are now predominantly built in carbon fibre with carbon spars to match. All of the designs have one thing in common and that is that they are only allowed one mast and main boom. This makes sail selection on a race day important as changing mainsails is time consuming unless practiced regularly. Regular series racing takes place on the first Saturday of the month with up to nine boats competing on an Olympic style course. The 6M’s can be seen at the Club on most Wednesday’s and free Saturday’s, practicing for what is an important year for both the class and the club in 2019. With both the South West Area and National Championships at the club this year interest levels are high with new boats about to hit the water and others being renovated. Model Boat Builders Plans: Six Metre Class Yacht Plans

This MYA national class is a scaled down version of its full sized counterpart and offers a traditionally graceful appearance with steady performance and handling. Boats are typically about one metre on the waterline with long overhangs. The draught is restricted to around 230 mm (9 ins) with the displacement typically 12 kg (26 Ibs) and the sail area relatively large at about .7 square metres (1100 sq.ins). Please Note: These plans are printed to order and take approximately 7 days for us to obtain.

FOR SALE – K15 – DUET

DUET is a Second Rule 6m, and although currently setup with a gaff rig for Mediterranean cup collecting, she still could be put back into 6m class with a Bermudian rig (not supplied, but she has a set of North 3DL Bermudian sails available).

On the market as her owner’s plans have changed, and has retired from classic yacht racing. She is a very special piece of our maritime history that also wins races and turns heads. She is being offered at a very modest figure and is VAT paid both in the UK and Europe.   We have been instructed by the owner for a prompt sale, and hence the paltry asking price

Full details are here –  https://www.berthoninternational.com/yacht-sales-brokerage/yachts-for-sale/alfred-mylne-glen-coats-gaff-sloop-duet/

FOR SALE – D50/US89 – DODO Urgently Needs New Owner

6m rc yacht

Help! DoDo D-50 (later US-89 in the Port Huron & Sarnia Fleet) a 1935 Bjarne Aas design, built by E Nordbjaerg Baadevaerft, for King Olav V of Denmark is at risk of being cut up if a new owner cannot be found urgently.

This historic Six has been based in the US Great Lakes for may years. The boat was last sailed and raced in 2015 and was stored indoors until November 2023, when it was moved outside and covered.

The mast is a triple spreader hollow spruce mast with an aluminum boom.  The sails are North Sails: 1 dacron main, 3 dacron jibs and 2 spinnakers. Included are Kevlar jib sheets and spinnaker sheets.

Other gear includes Harken blocks and 2 Lewmar winches as well as 4 vintage winches still in use.  Lifting cables for lifting from the keel bolts and a steel storage cradle.

A 6 hp Johnson outboard can be included if desired.

The underbody has been (successfully) altered to a more modern design with the rudder slightly farther forward against the shortened keel design.  With the normal prep work (bottom painting and mast stepped) the boat can be put in the water and raced.

DoDo can be inspected at the River’s Bend Marina in St. Clair, Michigan, USA (50 miles north of Detroit). She is now for sale for USD 15,000 or best offer.  The boat risks getting cut up for storage charges in the next month or so if no one is interested.

FOR SALE – GBR 42 – MELITA

6m rc yacht

The 1934 William Fife designed and built Melita is for sale. Originally built for Sir Ronald Teacher, she has a wonderful racing track record and could be a great project for a wooden boat enthusiast who could help her achieve her podium potential at International level with some strengthening of the area around the mast step.

She has been in her current ownership for 20 years, racing regularly with the UK fleet and in France, including at the 2008 Europeans in La Trinite. In 2022 she raced in the British Classic Yacht Club Regatta and the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Fife Regatta and in 2023 was preparing to race in the Worlds in Cowes. Unfortunately she had to withdraw from the Worlds due to her owner being incapacitated at that time.

Present condition

  • Good condition overall. Considerable care has been taken to maintain upkeep and appearance by the current owner of the last 19 years
  • Melita would benefit from strengthening the area around the mast step, and port-side beam shelf in order to remain competitive with top performing classics in the class, many of whom have been strengthened in this area. Upwind performance might also be enhanced with a different mast section-the current one considered extremely stiff.
  • The deck was thoroughly rubbed down and varnished (10+ coats) in 2022. Teak deck and mahogany in very good condition
  • The hull is epoxy sheathed. Topsides are in good condition, but some cosmetic improvements could quickly be made by cleaning and polishing where for example some varnish has run.
  • Winches would benefit a good servicing.
  • The trailer is not presently roadworthy but enables convenient storage and is easy to manoeuvre around a boatyard. Tyres are all inflated and all bearings checked or replaced 2021/22

A potential winter project, for a new owner to prepare for the upcoming season including the European championships in Porquerolles France, Olympic Centenary/Mediterranean/Fife regattas, Challenge Lemanique, club racing etc. Melita has the potential to be a serious contender given her excellent provenance, William Fife design and build, and proven past racing track record.

FOR SALE – FIN36 – JOY

JOYForSale

During golden 30’s Tore Holm designed several six meter regatta winners. 6mR “JOY” is one of them with typical Tore Holm lines. These boats are very competitive when sailing upwind. With 6mR “JOY” you do not have to worry who is next to you at the starting line.

JOYForSale2

With current set-up and top condition 6mR “JOY” has proven been fast and competitive. Several regatta wins and even more podium positions in the large and competitive Finnish Six Meter fleet in the last ten years. For the World Cup 2019 in Hanko 6mR “JOY” got the new mast and the complete new set of Grand Prix quality DOYLE Stratis sails. Modeling of sails, rig and boat were done with most modern design programs in Doyle in New Zealand. In the hands of even more competitive crew the result could have been even better than 8 th out of 32 boats.

This summer 2023 6mR “JOY” came back from Cinderella’s four years dream and participated in the Finnish Championships. The final position was 6th out of 14 boats in the tough Finnish 6mR fleet.

Sail garderope: – Main Sails:      2 * racing,   2 * cruising    (Doyle, North Sails, UK Sails) – Genoas:          4 * racing,   3 * cruising    (Doyle, North Sails, US Sails) – Spinnakers:     3 * racing,   1 * cruising    (North Sails, UK Sails, WB)

– The form/shape and details of the Doyle sails (2019) were superb, but the canvas material was not 100%. Therefore, Doyle made complete new set of sails for JOY (Main, Genoa 1 and Genoa 2). These new sails are not used in any regattas yet.

Mike Hayward’s 6M build

The construction of the 6 metre model yacht “Athene” (from a design by Admiral Alfred Turner 1925) by Michael Hayward

The whole project started some thirty years ago when a good friend of mine, Ian Wheeler from Hertfordshire, sent me a plan of a six metre design which he thought I might like to study. Being involved with model radio controlled aircraft at the time, I put the design to one side but left it on my workshop noticeboard for future consideration.

Thirty years on and retired from teaching in 2006 I looked for a new project, having already restored a fifty year old Merlin Rocket racing dinghy in 2009. Athene was the obvious challenge. Although I had an idea of the construction of a planked hull, I nevertheless found it necessary to obtain a number of books on the subject, including those by W J Daniels, Percival Marshall, Vic Smeed and R Griffin. Without them I doubt if the boat would have been completed.

The first task was to scale up the drawing with pencil and paper and then trace the shadows, allowing for 1mm ribs and 2.5mm planking. The shadows were cut from 6mm plywood and the keel/backbone from 9mm marine plywood then mounted on a “T” section pine building board with a 6mm ply top face. The choice of timber for planking was discussed with a local timber merchant at Interesting Timbers based on the Mendip Hills in Somerset. Cedar of Lebanon was chosen as they had in the past supplied a number of model makers for similar constructions.

Planking from gunwale to keel, each plank was tapered and bevelled along its length to the proportion of the shadow at each station. Planks were cut in pairs and glued with Cascamite adhesive port and starboard to maintain symmetry. Holding the planks in place, whilst allowing the glue to cure, was no mean task, using a combination of clamps, modelling pins and Duck Tape. On average it was possible to position one plank on each side in the early morning and another plank on each side in the early evening per day. Some may disapprove, but the bow, stern and keel were completed with solid Cedar of Lebanon. The whole interior was finished with one coat of West Systems epoxy resin. Deck beams were positioned with consideration for radio control and glued in place after shaping each one for a curved decking. Having no experience with radio yachts, I was very conscious of placing fittings on the deck prior to glueing the deck down. Trial and error and reading Model Radio Yachts by Trevor Reece helped immensely so that various positions could be reinforced on the underside of the deck before committing it to the hull. The underside of the deck was marine varnished prior to fixing.

Mike's 6M build 1

Having had experience in sand casting as a teacher, I knew I could cast the keel. But being retired, prevented me from having access to all the specialist equipment. Nevertheless I explored the possibility and found a supplier of casting sand in Hertfordshire and set about the task of acquiring a heat source to melt the lead. In the process I found that Bristol had a casting foundry not far from my home. So a visit was arranged. The Bristol foundry is a two man concern dealing with one-off commissions for local clients. One at that time being the BBC Nature Unit, who required caste aluminium penguins to house cameras for a forthcoming nature programme! I had already removed the keel section required for the casting and intended to use it as the pattern for the mould. Taking the pattern and my own lead, there was no problem for Bristol Foundry casting the keel whilst I was present to record the process on camera. The pattern had been slightly enlarged to allow for the contraction of the casting which I found to be near perfect when I offered it up to the boat. Large stainless steel screws and epoxy resin now hold the lead firmly in place.

Mike's 6M build 8.0

A second local timber merchant was used to supply the wood for the mast and boom. Robins Timber in Bristol recommended Douglas Fir, as Sitka Spruce was well beyond my budget and, anyway, it is Douglas Fir that Robins supply to local boat yards for the restoration of spars on traditional sailing craft. The mast on Athene is some 76 inches in length, laminated in two halves along its length, each half being hollowed out (as per W J Daniels) to reduce weight aloft. The same applied to the boom, although this was not hollowed. At this stage a decision had to be made as to the material for the sails. At the end of the day it just had to be cotton, so a phone call to Nylet and a chat to Frank Parsons set the order in place. Having now received them and rigged the model, the extra cost has been well worth it. Nylet have done an outstanding job, fully enhancing the classic lines of Admiral Turner’s creation. All the metal fittings were made in my workshop apart from small blocks and hooks supplied by Nylet along with the rigging.

Finishing of any model always takes longer than expected and one that I really enjoy. The hull was sanded down with fine glass paper, sealed, primed, undercoated and gloss finished with a total of some six coats with fine wet and dry paper between each coat. The deck was finished with the same care with five coats of semi-gloss polyurethane varnish.

I hope you all enjoy the lines of Athene as much as I do and appreciate the skill and creative thinking of Admiral Turner way back in 1925. All that is now required is the maiden voyage and an entry for the Richard Howlett Trophy.

Mike's 6M build 9.0

Postscript Since I wrote the above account of the build of Athene, I unfortunately had to spend time recovering from surgery which prevented me from launching her, although I was lucky enough to win the Howlett Trophy.

It was by chance that I contacted Weston Aerials to solve a TV problem and therefore met Russ. He saw Athene in my workshop and told me of SMBC and said he would help me sail her. On a perfect August Wednesday in 2019 he and fellow club members made the launch a great success. She looked fine and sailed very well. Many thanks to all those members for a memorable afternoon.

Frank Russell Design

R/c and model yacht design, plans, boats, sails..

I have been a designer of model and radio yachts since 1968. Boats been built from my plans now number in the hundreds both from both home and production builders. Many of my designs have won State and National Championships in Australia and overseas. New designs are added periodically and occasionally I do receive requests for specific designs. I also from time to time produce free plans.

Most of my older plans Pre 2000 will eventually be available as PDF files of the original large format drawing. The plans are located here:

A more complete list of my designs is here:

Plans are normally drawn on A4 and A3 format. Sections and appendages are normally drawn full size, 1:1. Some fin and bulb drawings are drawn to be printed in two halves and joined after printing. Arrangement drawings are 1:5 and sometimes 1:4.

Make sure when printing that the “Scaling” or “Fit to Page” option is turned off in your printer setup when you print. I also have the “Print Preview” turned on as well so I can check if the page size is correct. All drawings are in either A4 or A3 size paper.

Each drawing has a 100mm scale which will allow you to see if the drawings are the correct size.

The PDF drawings are usually emailed within a few hours of receiving your order from Paypal by email. DXF and DWG formats are available for most plans. Just ask and they also will be emailed.

Printed Paper Plans are avialable and are printed from the same plan as the PDF. Please ask before ordering. There is usually an additional postage charge for Printed Paper Plans.

Ellipsis 36 2023 is a 36 inch restricted class designs based on the Ellipsis IOM design. The 36r design was a request from a UK skipper for a lighter version of the 2017 design for both Radio and vane sailing. This design shuld be more suitable for lighter wind smooth water venues than the 2017.

LOA: 938mm LWL: 915mm BOA: 189mm Disp: 4.4kg

Goth 36 2017 is an 36 inch restricted class design based on the Goth IOM design. The original request came from John Fisher in 2013 who wanted a very light 36r for vane sailing. This design is the third design in the series, which has progressively become heavier and more successful.

New Equinox IOM   Plan : The Equinox is a variant of the Ellipsis… IOM.  The basic  design was produced initially as a 3D printed project that never eventuated for various reasons. Two prototypes were built including a 3D printed boat which was built by John Taylor in the UK.  The design incorporates several features of some of the newer IOM shapes including a fuller higher bow profile and wider stern. The design is well balanced and well behaved like the Ellipsis and should be as easy to plank from wood.

Hulls an components for this design are now available. See IOM COMPONENTS Page.

After payment is made. I will email you the pdf file.

Phoenix 4 2020 10r Every new design presents a designer with options to consider and directions to go. After a ten year gap from the P3, all 10r’s had adopted the deep keel, light weight approach and although it did seem to work I after the P5 I though that the Phoenix 4 design although fast went in the wrong direction. I always have thought about what I should have done. So this is P4- 2020, with 2020 hindsight is the result.

Goth 36 is an 36 inch restricted class design based on the Goth IOM design. The original request came from John Fisher in 2013 who wanted a very light 36r for vane sailing. this design is the second in the series, heavier and more successful.   There is also a later 2017 version which will be published soon.

Epsilon RG65 – 65 2019:    This design is based on the successful Ellipsis IOM concept, that of correct volume distribution rather than fashionable features with the emphasis on simplicity and efficiency.

Plans are PDF format or printed paper plan only. 3D hull and 2D bow and stern sections in DXF or DWG format are available on request.

Equation Marblehead 2019:    This design is based on the successful Ellipsis IOM concept, that of correct volume distribution rather than fashionable features with the emphasis on simplicity This design is the result of two Sailing Marblehead prototypes, The Ellipsis 1c and Ellipsis 2a.

Cerberus – 6m Something more of a challenge from a designers and builder’s point of view. A class I have always admired. This is Ceberus, my first published Six Metre design. This is the result of several requests for a design in the class and also a desire on my part build a six Metre for fun sailing locally. There are a couple of boats that will be built in the UK to join the fleet there. This design is intended to excel in moderate winds and will outperform anything of similar size drought and displacement in Australian conditions. Plans are $30 pdf plans from my PLANS page with other formats available. This design may also be available for 3D printing at a later date.

  • Starting off

We race 2 classes of boats, both requiring different sailing skills and tactics.

211792752_c0c9.JPG

On the 1st Sunday of the month we race the International One Metre (IOM). Limited to 1 metre in length with a set sail area and minimum weight, this class is raced worldwide. These boats have strict class rules to limit building costs, so it’s an ideal class for someone new to the sport of radio controlled racing sailboats. The yachts weigh a minimum of 4kg, and can be built on a kitchen table if you’re allowed! Being quick and highly manoeuvrable, the IOM offer close and entertaining racing. A hull can be built for less than £30 from free plans from the internet, or bought ready to race for prices over £1,800, but it’s far from cheque-book racing. Good skills and strategy are things that money can’t buy.

211794371.JPG

On the 3rd Sunday we change tack and race the slower and less manoeuvrable 6 Metre (6M) class, weighing more than 10 kg and over 1.3 metres in length they are graceful yachts and rewarding to sail when you get it right. The hulls are designed to the 6 metre rule, taking into account the waterline and girth measurements of the hull to create a maximum sail area. Therefore, it’s possible to have a light boat with a small sail area or a heavier boat with a larger area, and both should sail at the same speed. The 6M class is one of the prettiest class of radio controlled yacht and even a small fleet like ours at Clapham can be an impressive sight as they sail down the lake.

Following problems with low water levels in the pond in some years we have added a new class of boat to our fleet. This is the Soling class, which is an American one design class a little smaller than the One Metre and with a much shorter keel. The boats are built from an imported kit, and being a “one design” a fleet can give very close and exciting racing and has proved popular in the Club.

How we race

At Clapham we race an Olympic course. Called a sausage and triangle, the course is triangular with the longest side of the triangle covered twice to form the sausage. We start from the buoy nearest the clubhouse (no.1) and race along the bank to the furthest buoy on the same side (no.2), before crossing the pond to the buoy on the far bank (no.3) and then round no. 1 and up to no.2 before racing back down to the start/finish line.

211792746_ae9de38d2c-1.jpg

The reason for the sausage and triangle is to test the skipper and yacht on all points of sail, from close hauled, to two off the wind legs known as broad reaches, round the bottom mark for another close hauled leg before finishing on a straight down-wind leg. Although the start line should always be at right angles to the wind direction, so the start is always into the wind, because of the shape of the pond this isn’t always possible. So the course remains fixed and the wind direction varies, however because of the alignment of the pond to the prevailing winds means that the course is usually correct.

The rules we race under are the same as full size yachts, devised by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). The Racing Rules of Sailing (or RRS) are to ensure fair racing with out risk of damage to the yachts. If you are familiar to yacht racing there are a few minor changes which can be found in Appendix E of the RRS.

The RRS can be downloaded from the ISAF website

Don’t be put off by their complexity, a simplified version can be downloaded from the MYA website

Even with a little knowledge about the rules it’s possible to enjoy racing, and by watching other sailors you’ll soon learn how racing works.

I have a couple of 10 Raters at the moment, a Squire Kay SeaKing and a Greenfly/Tenafly design which I purchased from George Clark a couple of years back. I also sail a Victoria. I am waiting for a set of plans from MM for the ‘Force6’6M which I like the look of. Has any one at your club built this model and if so any tips would be appreciated. I may even sail with you at Clapham when it’s finished!!

The 6Ms we have the most of is the Seismick, designed by Chris Dicks. We have four at the moment, but hopefully by the 17th I might have actually finished mine which will take the total to 5. Although she has taken longer than I want to think about!

The best (and only) information I’ve found about building a 6M is on the 6M owners association website if thats any help. I’ll have an ask around and see if anyone has made a Force 6.

Feel free to vist us on the 1st (IOM) or 3rd (6M) Sundays of the month

You are my nearest model yacht club ( Parsons Green SW6 and I was wondering if I can sail a Footy Class yacht with you and if you plan to introduce this Class in the future?

Many thanks, Chris Simmonds

You guys look like you are the closest to me – I was rather impressed with the Micro Magic design as a good but low cost entrant – have you any plans in that area?

Quick Overview

A good quality mould from an accurately made master now exists and it is hoped SAILSetc will be able to supply super strong and light hull mouldings made in pre-preg carbon from later 2020 onwards. The hulls will have a centreline witness mark, transom, deck edge flange around the entire hull and centre deck and foredeck areas all included in the primary hull moulding. See below for the other parts that will be required to provide a kit for the boat.

ROMANZA - lines plan. Lines plan only, 11.5 kg, 0.7 m2 sail area - VPP

A revised hull form tuned to give a design that will compete across the wind speed range with the best existing designs in this class i.e. RENAISSANCE and ROCOCO providing it is built to the same standard. In fact the VPP has shown these designs are exceptionally difficult to beat across the range of headings and wind speeds. This is part of the reason why this is the first design in the class we have released since 1996. Sections shown full size. Other lines shown at half size. Frame sizes are given for 3.5 mm thick planks. Make fin and rudder as shown on the MONARCH plan or use moulded items as below for best results.

Other SAILSetc products that will be required to complete the hull to the highest standard:

  • Fin box moulding - 350G or the carbon trunking to be used with 370-6M
  • Fin system - 370-6M
  • Rudder moulding - 365-BLADE
  • Ballast casting - 200-6M-9kg
  • Ballast/fin/hull connection - INS-080

If you are unfamiliar with the construction of a 6 Metre and do not have sufficient information provided by a lines plan only, then a construction plan from this or another class will provide a lot of the information you need. The NIMBUS iii plan is the best source of this information we can recommend - source it from Traplet Publications.

Electronic files

Our plans are not made as CAD files but are a combination of printed output from the Maxsurf hull design program that is used to create the 3D shape and pen and ink addition of information about the appendages and rig. For this reason we cannot send an electronic version of the plan. However we are able to send dxf or iges files, 2D or 3D, output from the Maxsurf program. The 2D files may be of the plan view, the profile view, or the sections. The section view may also show the sections reduced by a 'planking' thickness. If you will be using planking as the method of construction it is important to estimate the planking thickness after the fairing and finishing process has been completed. If you are intending to use the files for creation of CNC machined parts it will be important to specify the spacing of the waterlines, buttock lines and sections.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

6m rc yacht

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
