SEAWAKE Powerboat Training - RYA Powerboat Level 2

Rya powerboat level 2 - £265 to £295 (1:1 £570).

Over the 2 days we look at:

Launching and Recovering

Launching and recovering a boat from and onto a trailer using slipways. We look how we need to set up the boat prior to launching and potential problems that could arise. We talk you through how to recover a boat on to a trailer by both driving and winching the boat on, considering potential hazards that may arise.

Preparation of boat

We discuss pre-launch checks that must be carried out for safe boating. We’ll check all necessary equipment is present and in good working order such as fenders, anchor, flares, fire extinguisher and spare fuel containers. We will also check the navigational equipment is working.

Boat handling

This part of the course covers all the basics of safe boat handling. We take you through the use of a kill cord, starting and stopping the engine, steering (using the ‘steer then gear’ method) and boat controls. The course will give you an understanding of how the boat is affected by wind and tide, how engine trimming works and start to discuss high speed manoeuvres, as well as low speed handling both backwards and forwards.

We’ll execute manoeuvres such as an emergency stop, parking, man overboard and various turns. We will spend some time looking at how to deal with potential emergencies, towing a boat, how different boats handle. While on the boat we’ll be working as a team, and of course we will discuss navigating the infamous Swellies!

We’ll go through picking up and mooring a buoy, leaving and parking alongside a pier, pontoon or wall, plus tying the boat up correctly and safely. The course covers towing a boat too, a skill you may need in an adverse situation.

Shore-based learning

During the classroom session, we’ll spend some time looking at and understanding navigational charts, learning how to use a compass and planning a passage. We will also gain a basic understanding of the buoyage system, tides, tidal streams and basic VHF radio handling.

Rya powerboat level 2 direct assessment day £385.

If you already have powerboating experience and are looking to get your PB2 certificate, we offer a one day direct assessment. This consists of three hours of coaching in the morning followed by an assessment in the afternoon in which you must demonstrate your ability in order to pass. RYA Powerboat Level Two Course

The RYA Powerboat Level Two course is great for beginners. You’ll be instructed by our professional team in both practical, water-based training as well as some classroom training where we’ll cover areas such as mooring and basic navigation. This course focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations.

What will you learn?

During the two-day course you will learn the following skills:

Course requirements & outcomes

This course is designed for beginners and children aged 12 or over, no assumed knowledge. The course may be preceded by the RYA Level One Start Powerboating Course.

After the course you will be a self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of your own limitations and those of other craft.

Additional information

There will be a maximum of 3 students per vessel on this course. This is designed to give you as much time as possible driving the boat and a personalised course experience.

This course is available to book online on the first weekend of every month, other dates may be available on request and for private bookings.

Unless booking a private course, a minimum of two students is required, we will endeavour to fill empty places but if you are the only candidate booked it may be necessary to change your booking or cancel.

Duration: 2 days

Minimum age: 12 years - Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult (candidates under the age of 16 will be issued with an endorsed certificate).

For mixed group bookings a minimum of 2 students is required, there is a maximum ratio of 3 students to one instructor per boat.

PB2 courses are available to book online on the first weekend of every month, other dates available on request and for private bookings.

Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken at an inland or coastal location. It may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement. The certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 (2 days)

This is the entry level course for anybody wanting to learn how to drive a powerboat. Undertaken on sheltered waters, it covers foundation skills including launching and recovery, boat handling, man overboard, coming alongside, anchoring, chartwork and navigation and is the ideal introduction to powerboating safely. It is also the minimum requirement for anybody wishing to join the Marine Club .

RYA Intermediate Powerboat (2 days)

This course builds on the skills gained on the powerboat level 2 course and aims to improve your confidence and boat handling abilities as you venture to more challenging waters. The course includes day passage planning, more advanced boat handling skills and cruising at planing speed.

Skill Requirements: Boat handling on coastal waters up to the standard of RYA Powerboat Level 2. It is also recommended that you have sound theoretical knowledge up to Day Skipper standard, a valid first aid certificate and hold a VHF Radio Operators Licence.

RYA Advanced Powerboat (2 days - includes a night passage)

This is aimed at leisure and professional boaters wanting to undertake more adventurous trips by day and night. It includes navigation at planing speed, weather and other aspects of skippering powerboats on more challenging passages in coastal waters.

Skill requirements: Driving ability up to RYA Intermediate Powerboat standard, knowledge of navigation up to at least Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory level. It is also strongly recommended that you hold a valid first aid certificate and VHF Radio Operators Licence.

Min age: 17yrs (anybody under the age of 18yrs, must be accompanied on the course by somebody aged 18yrs+)

Powerboat training.

Welcome to Big Blue Corfu - Weare a British Couple from Bolton Lancashire. We are a Royal Yachting Association "RYA" Training Center. We are certified to offer the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course and issue a Certificate / Licence upon the satisfactory completion of the course 

Greek Law - To be in charge of a boat on the water, with greater than 30 hp the person in-charge must hold a valid recognized license /certificate. The Greek authorities Recognise RYA certification

Powerboat Level 2   (PB2) – This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). 

The RYA PB2 it is recognised by the Greek authorities, and the authorities of most other countries. Switzerland is a notable exception.

It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. and Fun 

Mission statements – Fun whilst Learning. We are here to impart you with the knowledge, skills and confidence  to make you a safe and responsible captain of a small but powerful boat (up to 10meter). You will leave us with a solid platform to develop your boating skills and withe the confidence to take a boat out, your own, or one hired from one of the local firms, for a fun day out, and return safely.        

Customer goal –  We want you to enjoy your training, most of our customers are on holiday and do not want to waste there precious time in a dingy classroom hence the White House is our normal classroom. You get to see some of the best locations on Corfu from the sea, San Stefanos, Agni Bay and our Kalami Bay

Group size – I would not like to spend a day or two mixed with other people on this course. therefore I do not mix you with other people that you have not booked with. If you book for yourself you will get one to one tuition, a couple will be as a couple.

Your instructor – I have been boating for about 20 years mainly in Greek waters and around Anglesey The Menai Straights, in the North West corner of Wales where I learned to be an RYA Advanced Power-boater and a RYA powerboat Level 2 Instructor. under the expert tutelage of Phil Sharkey  SeaWakes chief Instructor. The Menai Straights Anglesey are one of the most demanding navigable stretches of water in the world, I could not have learned in a better place.

Sailing Courses

Adult courses   (age 14+).

RYA Level 1  – Is an introductory course to dinghy sailing. The course takes place over 2days/16 hours and gives students the basic skills and knowledge to sail around safely in calm conditions.

RYA Level 2  – is the next step. Again 2days/16 hours, this course teaches you how to rig, launch and recover your own boat, sail on all points of sail in moderate conditions and how to recover from a capsize. As well as this, basic theory is covered.

RYA Level 3, Day Sailing, Dinghy Seamanship Skills, Dinghy Sailing with Spinnakers also available

Youth Courses   (age 8+)

Youth Stage 1 –   A 2 day course providing you a basic understanding and feeling of how a boat sails, giving you confidence on the water.

Youth Stage 2  – Here you will gain basic sailing skills, allowing you to manoeuvre the boat, control your speed and understand the basic principles.

Youth Stage 3 –  During this course, you will learn how to sail a triangle course in moderate conditions and how to launch and recover your boat.  You will also be able to recover a capsized dinghy in the water.

Youth Stage 4 –  By the end of this stage, you should be able to competently sail around a triangle unaided, using the 5 essentials whilst sailing in a crewed dinghy.
