Lower Nob Hill
Before you go to a restaurant, what do you want — or need — to know most? In our series, The Rundown , we’re sharing all the essentials about newly opened (as well as some of your favorite) restaurants.
Today, we’re looking at the much beloved Liholiho Yacht Club on Sutter Street in Nob Hill. The restaurant has been closed to dining since the start of the pandemic, but after almost three long years, the space in now reopened. And though Liholiho will be familiar to its legions of regulars and its tagline remains the same — “a restaurant celebrating heritage through food in a lively atmosphere” — the return after three long years means it is, in many ways, very much a new restaurant. Here are five things to know before you go.
1. The Values
Following in the forward-thinking footsteps of sister restaurant Good Good Culture Club , Liholiho is transparent about its workplace culture and the ways in which it is trying to build a better restaurant industry. Read the entire statement here , and take note of the emphases on equitable pay, growth, care, and empowerment. For these reasons, among others, there is an equitable compensation fee on all checks of 20%; read more about that here .
2. The Space
The space has been refreshed and remodeled in nuanced ways. If you’ve been to the restaurant once, you might not notice, but if you’ve been a regular over the years, you’ll definitely see and feel the changes. There are new light fixtures and more bar seating up front; the booths are now lined with comfy, burgundy cushions, and the walls are painted with a wave-like pattern by Oakland-based artist Kalani Ware . The glass partition in the back has been knocked down, and the large espresso machine that used to sit at the bar counter has been removed, effectively increasing the feeling of spaciousness inside the restaurant.
3. The Food
You’re of course at Liholiho Yacht Club for the unique and singular fare inspired by heritage. Some of the restaurant’s classics make a return, albeit slightly refreshed: The tuna poke on nori chips are a different shape. The fluffy, poppyseed-studded buns are now filled with housemade spam instead of beef tongue. And the duck liver mousse is now served on wonderful banana bread.
But there are also new items on the menu that are sure to be instant hits, like the spicy, thinly shaved pig head salad and the swordfish katsu with Russian dressing and a caper butter sauce that evokes Filet-o-Fish vibes in the best way possible.
4. The Drinks
Sean Kelley started at Liholiho Yacht Club back in 2015; he’s now beverage director, creating vibrant, citrus-forward cocktails like the Fholston Paradise, which has agricole rum, coconut liquor, just enough absinthe so that you barely notice the subtle licorice layer, and bright lime to balance it all. There is also beer, wine, sake, and non-alcoholic cocktails as well.
Fans of the downstairs bar, Louie’s Gen-Gen Room, will have to be patient; the space isn’t ready to debut just yet, but the team is hoping to have it open by the beginning of 2023, if not sooner.
5. The Reservations
So you want to make a reservation at Liholiho Yacht Club? Smart move. Know that reservations open exactly two weeks out at exactly 10 p.m.; as usual, your odds are better if you’re looking at non-primetime hours, and weekdays. If nothing’s available, do set that Notify. It’s a wonderful thing. And of course, the crew does save some walk-in spots every night.

The Tasteful Hawaiian Eatery With A Hidden Cocktail Room • Liholiho Yacht Club
Say Aloha to the eatery that everyone’s trying to book for its dangerously good tasting menu and hidden basement bar.
The bright spot is inspired by the early 80’s “pop up” parties that Hawaiian uncles used to throw after a day of sailing. Traditionally, a small-scale, informal “lūʻau” would feature grilled foods, music, ice-cold beers and a live band for anyone to enjoy. A small fee would be charged purely to cover the costs, allowing them to uphold what became a way of life. While Liholiho Yacht Club isn’t on a yacht or even near a marina, the concept has been carried through with a welcoming finesse that’s worth the 3-month wait.
Eat like Prince Kuhio at an Ohana Table
View this post on Instagram
“Ohana” meaning family, is exactly the appetite size you’ll need to bring to this feast. You can expect Chef Ravi Kapur to serve up 10-12 Mmm-evoking, shareable dishes. The highlights include tuna poke, sesame oil, radish and nori cracker or duck liver toast, jalapeno with pickled pineapple. The meal will cost around $62 per person (excluding gratuity and drinks), with no less than 8 and no more than 12 guests. There are only two Ohana tables available which you’ll need to book 90 days in advance, so keep an ear to the ground.
Louie’s Gen-Gen cocktail room
While this highly Instagrammable spot, with brick walls, comfy turquoise sofas and hot pink sunsets, is below the main dining room, it has a completely different identity. By day it’s a bright brunch spot, and a vibey, boozy cocktail bar by night. You could sip on a “Last Mango in Paris” while you wait for a table or settle in and order a waffled grill cheese and local Dungeness crab, served with nori chips, while the DJ spins away the night.
As with the original parties, this trendy spot is hugely popular-with a 3-week reservation waiting list for a dinner table, it’s best to plan ahead. If you’re not the type to know what you’ll be in the mood for in a month’s time, then arrive at 4:30 just before opening time to secure a spot at one of the bars.

Liholiho Yacht Club
Ravi Kapur has earned a rare distinction: making just about everyone crave Hawaiian food. Kapur wasn’t fulfilled as the chef of the high-profile Prospect, so he returned to his home state, where he became inspired by the flavors he grew up with. Using that as a jumping-off point, he’s created dishes that are wholly his own. He coats beef ribs with kimchi chile sauce, makes his own Spam for fried rice with bay shrimp and abalone mushrooms, and bathes clams in coconut curry. He’s also infused a very personal feel into the narrow dining room. A billboard-size 1975 black-and-white photo of his mother with her dark hair fluttering in the breeze dominates the back bar. The open kitchen is covered in electric yellow tile — what he calls his happy color. The experience embodies the aloha spirit at every turn, including when waiters present napkins to each guest. Partner Jeff Hanak, who also is an owner of Nopa and Nopalito, adds polish to the wine list and service. Together they’ve created a playful restaurant with food that’s seriously fun.

Evoking The Aloha Spirit At San Francisco's Liholiho Yacht Club
Acclaimed designer Massimo Vignelli once said, "An architect should be able to design everything from the spoon to the city." These words have become a sort of guiding philosophy for architect Brett Terpeluk of the San Francisco–based firm Studio Terpeluk . "I aspire to the European model of an architect," says Terpeluk, sitting across from me at his latest project, the very stylish and Hawaiian-leaning Liholiho Yacht Club in the Tenderloin. It's 5:30 p.m., and the space is already humming with energy.
"In America, there's this strange dichotomy between the perception of what a designer does and what an architect does," says Terpeluk, looking sharp in a dark button-down shirt with slightly messy hair, subtle stubble and thick, distinctive eyebrows that punctuate his expressions. "Many Americans see architects as technicians, people who understand code and get permits. Because we go through a rigorous testing protocol to become licensed, we can get pigeonholed. But the European model is different: Architects and designers are one and the same."
What sets Terpeluk apart even further from his colleagues is his passion for working with restaurants. "I love creating spaces that reflect the cuisine and the traditions that are trying to be brought forward," he says. Last month, Terpeluk spoke at the annual Architecture and the City Festival , during a sold-out panel discussion called "The Designer and the Chef." The group addressed the relationship between design and dining, and how the look of a space can contribute to the success of a restaurant.
For one of his first restaurant clients, Farina , a Genovese-inspired restaurant in the Mission, Terpeluk wanted to lend the space a timeless and traditional feel. So he relied heavily on heavy materials, like solid wood, bar-stock steel, concrete and salvaged marble. Even though the restaurant opened in 2007, Terpeluk's thoughtful choices have allowed the restaurant to look fresh yet age gracefully at the same time.
Liholiho Yacht Club posed a different (and obviously unique) set of challenges. Chef Ravi Kapur grew up in Hawaii and was heavily influenced by Indian and Chinese cuisine, and his menu was inspired by his uncle's pop up–style beer and barbecue dinners held on Liho Liho Street. Given those considerations, Terpeluk says he needed to create a space that was warm, egalitarian and "not overwhelmingly architectural." (Meaning "no formal gestures and nothing too powerful," he says.)
The overall layout might look simple with the bar and seating in front, the kitchen and more seating in the middle, and even more dining tables in back. But it's not. "There's no bad seat in the restaurant," Terpeluk says. You can enjoy a casual drink or snack at the bar, feel like you're eating in someone's kitchen in the middle, or linger over a more secluded, quiet dinner in the back.
Terpeluk recognizes that much of his work is rooted in being extraordinarily detail-minded. "My practice is like a nesting Russian doll, there's always projects within projects within projects," he says. Still, he welcomes the "moments of serendipity than can veer you off your course," he adds. "It's about balancing your left and right brain, so you can be rigorous yet malleable."
For instance, Terpeluk didn't always love the sunshine-yellow tile in the kitchen at Liholiho. He initially looked at more neutral tones, like greys and whites. But after trying to imagine himself in Kapur's world, he had a change of heart. "I realized that the kitchen is his house, he's there until midnight almost every day," Terpeluk says. "The really powerful yellow spoke more to Hawaii and the profoundly personal experience of the chef. It pushed me outside of my comfort range."
The unique layout of bright blue, geometric floor tiles wasn't in the initial plans, either. As Terpeluk hustled to complete his work in time for the opening, he ran into a hurdle. The tile company he was sourcing from only had a specified amount of the style he had picked, and not nearly enough to cover the entire restaurant. But there was a good amount of something similar-looking. To resolve the issue, Terpeluk arranged the two different tiles in a distinctive chevron pattern. It looks and feels deliberate but in reality was "born of practicality," he admits.
Given the bold splashes of color in the kitchen and on the floors, Terpeluk says he needed something just as eye-catching and memorable for the bar area — something to not only welcome guests but lend a strong sense of place and "relate to Ravi's heritage" as well. After flipping through a pile of Ravi's old family photos, one snapshot of a woman captured Terpeluk's eye. The woman was the chef's mother, and when the photo was taken, she had just discovered she was pregnant with Ravi. Her hair is wavy, wild and loose, and the larger-than-life energy of her smile extends far beyond the photo's edges. "This woman has amazing radiance, she's got a glow," Terpeluk says. "She embodies the Aloha Spirit in my mind."

One Market Restaurant
Sometimes the occasion calls for getting dressed up and taking your clients out for a special meal. And for that, Embarcadero staple One Market has you covered. Start off your evening with a Hemingway Daiquiri, a far cry from the overly sweet frozen slush you might be used to. Made from BACARDÍ Superior, fresh lime, and house-squeezed grapefruit, it’s a refreshing way to kick off your meal. Then treat yourselves to bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin or pan-seared scallops, or go all out with the chef’s tasting menu.

Local Edition
Descend into the Hearst building basement and you’ll be transported back to the heyday of the printing press — with all the ‘50s- and ‘60s-inspired glamour that high ceilings, red velvet drapes, and mood lighting evoke. Strewn with antique typewriters, archival clips, and, yes, vintage printing presses, Local Edition is at once nostalgic and posh, popular with the after-work crowd. It’s great for group, too; each of its cocktail bottles (signature libations like the Courier, made with rum, agave, lemon, allspice dram, bitters, and sparkling wine) serves five to six patrons.

Pagan Idol is one of many revivals of San Francisco (and the rest of the country’s) tiki obsession in the mid-20th century. Among the others, this bar earns a spotlight for its unabashed penchant for the fantastical — its “captain’s quarters” resemble the interior of a wooden ship, outfitted with kraken-inspired light fixtures and underwater videos styled like portholes. Its other lounge area is a tropical dreamscape of twinkling sky, thatched huts, towering totem poles, and an “erupting” volcano that spews smoke. The Mai Tai is an obvious drink of choice here, though those who prefer less saccharine tipples should order the Witch Doctor (rum, grapefruit, passion fruit, spices, and egg white).

Barbarossa Lounge
Just a tad campy, to be sure, but jailhouse-turned-lounge Barbarossa is a beloved homage to what once was San Francisco’s red light district. The area’s “Barbary Coast” moniker has ties to a former pirate territory in Northern Africa — which accounts for the curious combination of prison cell decor and bondage-themed art here. It also explains the cocktail menu’s signature grog. The pirate’s and sailor’s drink has been elevated with citrus blends (kiwi, mint, and lime, for example), to be paired with your spirit of choice. You can choose from a selection of local beers and boutique California wines at Rickhouse, but you’ll likely want to try a whiskey-based drink here, if only because it suits the rugged look and history of the place. The ceiling is made from the staves of barrels imported from Kentucky, and the walls of the bar originally came from a Prohibition-era nunnery in the Ozarks. If you come with a group of coworkers or even the clients you’re trying to win over, go ahead and try the popular punch bowl to share. Bartenders use fresh juices, natural sugars, and local produce in all the cocktails.

For when you need a light snack or afternoon pickmeup, Plentea is it. This is not your average milk or bubble tea; instead, Plentea uses the tea of your choosing (oolong, green, or black) and adds fresh toppings into the mix, like taro pudding, chia seeds, egg pudding, aloe, and red bean. You’ll also feel good making Plentea into your weekly routine, as they’ve been using eco-friendly glass bottles long before everyone else threw out their plastic straws.

Wayfare Tavern
Don’t be surprised if you and your coworkers are one of dozens of work groups to head to Wayfare Tavern for post-work drinks. The Wayfare Tavern has quickly become one of Fidi’s most popular after-hours haunts, and we can see why. Pub-style overstuffed booths and old-timey decor? Check. Easy American fare to sink your teeth into, like fried chicken or the house burger? Check. Full beer and wine lists and a stiff cocktail list to boot? And check again. Order round of Tavern Sours for everyone, made with the restaurant’s Select Eagle Rare Single Barrel whiskey.

Uno Dos Tacos
You can definitely come in for a quick burrito lunch, but we all know that team bonding is done best with extra sides of guacamole and rounds of margaritas. Wind down after work with your choice of six different tacos (bonus points for a stellar vegetarian option, made with poblanos, yellow squash, onion, and mushrooms), and your choice of a tequila cocktail. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by happy hour prices, too.

Good for the type of hotel it is

kpslas Business - 10/18/2019 TripAdvisor review
For those traveling from the US, Ibis is comparable to a budget hotel. It is in the "budget, low frills" catagory. It is very nice for the type of hotel it is. The rooms and bathrooms are small. The only amenities are a pump shower gel in the shower and a pump soap dispenser by the sink. No tissues, not even a complimentary pen. The TV is very small and only carries a few english language channels which are only news. The floors are laminate and the spartan furniture is wood, giving it a college dorm feeling. The room was clean and the bed is comfortable. My only complaint is that even though there is a temperature control in the room it doesn't work. No matter what you set the temperture the room is always warm. To remedy this I was told to open the window. There are not many hotels in Stupino the Ibis is the best choice by far. The staff are friendly and speack english to varying degrees.
Dear kpslas! I thank you for choosing our hotel and I am very sorry that you experienced any inconvenience during your stay. Be sure to inform the front desk of any problems during your stay, we will do our best to make you smile again. Hope to see you again at our Hotel! Kind regards, Ekaterina Goncharenko Operation Manager

Even though the restaurant opened in 2007, Terpeluk's thoughtful choices have allowed the restaurant to look fresh yet age gracefully at the same time.
