What is left for Yacht Rock Revue to prove? This top-notch group of musicians has already rocked onstage with John Oates, Eddie Money (RIP), and both versions of the band Player. They’ve trademarked the term “yacht rock,” both metaphorically and literally (U.S. Registration Number 3834195). From humble beginnings in a basement, touring in partnership with Live Nation and Sirius XM, they now headline sold-out shows across the country, from Webster Hall in New York to the Wiltern in L.A. While rising from bars to amphitheaters, they’ve ticked every box on the Rock Star Accomplishments bingo card. Except for one: Writing and singing their own songs.
Yacht Rock Revue’s first original record is ten songs inspired by the smoooooth sounds of the Seventies and Eighties. They’ve brazenly titled it Hot Dads In Tight Jeans – forgive them for bragging, but that’s what they are – and it returns Yacht Rock Revue to their roots in original music.
“I had a midlife crisis. That’s why we made this album,” says Nick Niespodziani, the group’s singer, guitarist, and spiritual leader. “Everyone in the band is a dad now, so we needed to make this happen, before we become grandpas. I’ve sung ‘Escape’ by Rupert Holmes at least a thousand times, and if that isn’t paying your dues, I don’t know what is.”
It’s rare that musicians in their 40s chase their rock star dreams. You’d have to be crazy to try. YRR knew they were underdogs, but resolved to take one more shot at the Top 40, and maybe even become a Cinderella story of midlife fulfillment.
Yacht Rock Revue began in the least-yachtiest of states, 2,000 miles from breezy Marina del Rey. Niespodziani and Pete Olson met in the fourth grade in suburban Indiana, went on to Indiana University in the late Nineties, formed the band Y-O-U, then escaped – Rupert Holmes reference intended – to Atlanta. One night, Y-O-U tucked their tongues deep in their cheeks and played a show of Yacht Rock songs. The rowdy (a nice way of saying drunk), sold-out crowd loved it.
When the club owner asked them to do it again, Niespodziani didn’t want to. But the club owner had an ace up his sleeve: money. Over the years, YRR (there’s also a Dave, a Greg, and literally three guys named Mark) have turned themselves into human wine spritzers, playing 120 to 150 shows a year, mastering Yacht Rock’s slick chords and mellow grooves, and partying like it’s 1979.
What began as a joke among friends soon put a ripple in the zeitgeist, starting a national trend through YRR’s concerts, lauded as “unabashedly joyous affairs” by Entertainment Weekly. They accumulated an extensive wardrobe of white belts and polyester shirts. Yacht Rock Revue were revered and well-compensated! Their life was a tenor sax solo! This is what every musician wants. But even as YRR was sailing the smooth seas of tribute-band superstardom, and the band members all became dads, Niespodziani was still writing original songs.
These new tunes had the spirit of Yacht Rock, but were more modern – akin to Phoenix or Air, the hip bands that adapted Yacht for a younger audience. They brought the songs to a hot producer, Ben Allen, who’s worked with Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, and Neon Indian. Allen gave the songsa lustrous shine, for both new audiences and their ever-loyal fans, the Nation of Smooth. Niespodziani and Olson even co-wrote a song, “Big Bang,” with Yacht Rock master Matthew Wilder, famous for his massive 1983 hit “Break My Stride.”
“Step,” the record’s first single, is a peppy number replete with falsetto and bumping bass, a cross between the Bee Gees and Steely Dan’s “Peg.” It’s also the mission statement for the album in a way, because it’s about deciding who you want to be, and making space for that in your life. The seven-piece band display tight chops, and the songs incorporate Yacht Rock Revue’s sense of humor, especially on the funky, pro-margarita “Bad Tequila,” the flute-fired “Another Song About California,” and opening track “The Doobie Bounce,” where Niespodziani brags, “I used to sleep on couches/Now I sleep on nicer couches.”
Hot Dads In Tight Jeans is as plush and shiny as Kenny Loggins’ beard. And YRR are already dropping these new songs into their sets, to great response from longtime fans who are thrilled to hear new smooth. While others in YRR’s position stick with the tried-and-true, Niespodziani hopes the album will let them welcome aboard new fans, too. To paraphrase a notable mariner… they’re gonna need a bigger yacht.
“Here’s how I see it,” Niespodziani concludes, sliding into a waiting limousine. “We have only one fewer hit than Player did, and Player is immortal. We built this Yacht Rock thing on the power of memories and good vibes. None of that is changing; we're just gonna make a few new memories as well."

JD Ryznar and Dave Lyons are the co-creators of the mid-2000s comedic web-series Yacht Rock.
While the joke genre they coined led to a legitimate smooth-music renaissance in pop culture, it has also led to a distorted definition of what yacht rock is all about.
The pair join host Elamin Abdelmahmoud to talk about setting the record straight with this week's launch of their podcast Yacht or Nyacht , where they'll adjudicate which songs belong to the yacht rock canon using a scientific scoring system.

Best concert ever.
Wasn't sure what to expect but had an absolutely great time!
Great performance
It was a great venue. I have followed the Yatch Rock for years. I love coming to Avondale to see them perform. I try to catch them at all nearby venues if possible.
Fantastic Show
Absolutely loved the show. We could have stayed for another couple of hours listening to all the great old hits. I hope they are back in the area soon.
First time at ABC and first time to see Yacht Rock Revue. The place was packed and it was a fun night. Very cool venue.
YRR always puts on a great show. Singing with them makes me feel young again!!! If you get the chance go see them.
Yacht rock review sunk
The venue was poorly supervised. People climbing over the fences without tickets, generators running around the fence could not hear the music. The band sounded terrible. Avondale Venue Score F. The smart people stayed outside Avondale Brewery. You could hear the band just as good plus you had plenty of food options and different pubs you could attend.
Always a fun experience
Yacht Rock appeals to all ages. They are excellent musicians and performers.
Great time, though I prefer seeing them in open standing room only venue.
So much fun
Incredibly talented crew - every one of them. What a great show!
Just a great selection of music that kept you singing along and dancing in your chair! Terrific musicians and singers- got to love the boat captain hats many people were wearing!

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
Ozzy Osbourne is not shying away from talking about his health.
The British rock star, 75, revealed on his SiriusXM show that he’s undergoing stem cell therapy amid his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.
“I’ve just come back from the doctor after having some stem cells put in me,” Osbourne told his co-host Billy Morrison on the latest episode of “Ozzy Speaks.”
He continued, “The thing is, you have it, and you go, ‘I don’t feel that great,’ but I don’t know what it would be like if I didn’t have it.”
Osbourne was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2003. He received four surgeries on his spine following a bad fall in 2019.
“This stuff that I have, it’s kind of like a super f–king stem cell, you know?” he said on his radio show. “They put three bottles in me this morning. But apparently, this stuff that I’m on now is a real business show … I had one about three months ago and this was a follow-up, and I’ve got to go in about six months from now.”
Despite his health issues, Osbourne confirmed that he wants to come out of retirement and perform again.
“I’d like to do a f–king gig without falling over now,” he said.
Morrison told Osbourne, “Well, that’s gonna come. You’ll get there.”
Osbourne also explained how he’s focused on his future regardless of his health battles.
“I want to still carry on, you know?” the Black Sabbath frontman said. “I can’t redo what I’ve done, but I wasn’t ready to throw the towel in when I did.”
He even declared that he wants to win an Oscar in a music category like Elton John did for “The Lion King” in 1994.
The musician previously opened up about his health issues to Rolling Stone UK last year and revealed that he has “10 years left” to live “at best.”
The British rock mag honored Osbourne with its Icon Award in 2023, but he was unable to attend the ceremony, so his wife Sharon Osbourne went in his place.
In January, Sharon told the publication that Ozzy will play two more shows “to say goodbye” to his fans amid his health issues.
“He won’t tour again,” she said.

Fine for 2023 Maui yacht grounding skyrockets to $1.8M
The parties that damaged coral and live rock near Honolua Bay with a yacht in early 2023 were originally fined $117,000. Now they're on the hook for $1.8 million.
The significant increase comes following calls from the public for officials to consider the losses sustained from cultural, emotional and utility standpoints.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources initially recommended the smaller fine — a number based on a DAR matrix detailing the biological value of the coral that was damaged.
“ If this would have happened right outside of Hanauma Bay, the community would have been outraged. While perhaps some of the coral may not have been on DAR's scale as really a high value, it had cultural value, it had place value, it had community value,” said state Board of Land and Natural Resources Chair Dawn Chang.
Last week the BLNR reissued and increased the fine against the owners and operator of the luxury yacht, also known as Nakoa: Jim Jones, who manages Noelani Yacht Charters and operated the vessel at the time of the grounding, and Kevin S. Albert, Kimberly L. Albert, and the Albert Revocable Trust.
Jones was aboard the vessel and using it for personal reasons in February 2023 when it grounded outside the Honolua-Mokulē‘ia Bay Marine Life Conservation District on Maui.
The incident destroyed or damaged about 120 stony coral specimens and more than 1,600 square feet of live rock.
Last summer the BLNR agreed to the $117,000 fine. The board reportedly said it tried to collect the fine, but could not.
After the initial fine was described by opponents as a “slap in the face” to the community, the board deferred the fine and directed DAR to gather community input for a greater understanding of the damage caused beyond the biological value of the lost coral.
“I think levying the full extent of our abilities to fine is important and … (sends) a signal to others in the future that this board takes these kinds of matters very seriously. We’ll be looking to exert serious fines with respect to damage and environmental pollution that has an impact, especially in places that are unique biologically, culturally and for the community,” board member Aimee Barnes said.
The board unanimously voted in favor of the $1.8 million fine.

BLNR seeks to fine the operator/owner of the Nakoa $1.8 million for the damages to corals and live rock, as well as damages to culture and community caused by the yacht’s grounding at Honolua Bay.
The Hawaii Board of Land and Natural Resources has decided to significantly boost a fine for the grounding of a luxury yacht near Honolua Bay last year to more than $1.8 million.
The board on Friday increased the recommended fine from $117,471.97 originally , to the new maximum amount of $1,818,851.97, after hearing impassioned testimony from members of the community.
John Carty of the Save Honolua Coalition asked the BLNR to send a powerful message to boat owners to honor the community’s pain and suffering.
“It has been a hellish year for our community,” he testified, noting there was also a fuel leak. “We’ve endured too much. It’s unthinkable, and a slap on the wrist today for the boat owners would be a slap in our face and we have gone through too much. This desecration and damage to one of our most sacred places demands a $1.8 million fine.”
The fines are to be levied against Jim Jones of Noelani Yacht Charters LLC, Kevin S. Albert. Kimberly L. Albert and the Albert Revocable Trust.
In February 2023, the Nakoa, a luxury yacht, broke free of its mooring and grounded on a reef near the Honolua-Mokuleia Bay Marine Life Conservation District, damaging 119 coral colonies and some 1,640 square meters of live rock.
After several unsuccessful towing attempts, the yacht was finally pulled free the following month, but took on water en route to Oahu and sunk to the bottom of the ocean off Maui.
The DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources recommended the original, lesser fine based on damages plus administrative costs, while leaving consideration of penalties for cultural damage and community distress to the board.
These proposed fines were submitted to the board a third time, this time after input from a community meeting held in Lahaina in February.
The community generally felt the recommended fines were too low, and that the board should pursue the maximum fine to deter this type of behavior in the future. Also, the fines should be used to increase enforcement and better moorings — and Honolua Bay should be closed to all commercial activities if it cannot be policed and managed.
The decision was unanimous and unprecedented, according to a news release from the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.
“This was a win for natural, biological, and cultural resources and for an entire community which places great value on a cherished bay and the life it supports, said BLNR Chair Dawn Chang. “I’m proud of the BLNR for sending a strong message, that if you damage Hawaii’s precious resources and cause distress for people, the penalties can be significant.”

On May 2, NBC announced the lineup for the final two shows of the season. On May 11, SNL alum Maya Rudolph will return to host the show for the third time alongside musical guest Vampire Weekend.
A week later, Jake Gyllenhaal will also host for the third time with Sabrina Carpenter joining him as musical guest.
But before all that, Dua Lipa will pull double duty as both host and musical guest on May 4 as she continues to promote her upcoming third studio album, Radical Optimism.
"DOUBLE DUTY DUA," the "Levitating" singer previously wrote on Instagram, just one day after dropping "Illusion," the new song off the highly anticipated release.
The hosting gig will immediately follow the May 3 release of Radical Optimism , which the singer first announced back in March.
It's been an epic season of SNL thus far as Saltburn star Jacob Elordi helmed the first episode of the new year, alongside musical guest Reneé Rapp. Following Dakota Johnson and Justin Timberlake 's SNL return on Jan. 27, The Bear star Ayo Edebiri made her SNL debut, alongside returning musical guest Jennifer Lopez . Season 49 has also included host and musical guest appearances from Josh Brolin , Ariana Grande , Emma Stone and Sydney Sweeney .
The NBC sketch comedy show kicked off its 49th season on Oct. 14, and brought SNL alum Pete Davidson back to Studio 8H to host the premiere. SNL was forced to go dark and cut its 48th season short due to the Writers Guild of America strike. However, with the WGA reaching a deal with the AMPTP, Saturday Night Live was able to return to TV.
Check out the full list of the hosts and musical guests who are lending their talent to season 49.

The Priscilla star made his SNL debut, hosting the first episode of the New Year. Dakota Johnson hosted SNL for the second time, with Justin Timberlake joining as the episode's musical guest. Timberlake made his return to Studio 8H for the first time since December 2013.
