PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Chase Silseth gave up one run in four innings, making him the first Angels pitcher this spring to finish four innings. He allowed a run without a hit in the first inning, when he walked a batter and hit a batter. “Rough couple batters there in the first,” Silseth said. “I settled in, started throwing it through the zone. … Got that little feel and took it for the rest of the ballgame.” After that he retired nine out of 10 hitters, giving up one hit. Silseth, who had been scheduled for 55 pitches, was so efficient he had to throw another 15 in the bullpen after finishing in the game. Silseth, however, again saw his velocity drop slightly during his outing, from 96 mph in the first inning to 93 mph in the fourth. Silseth has allowed one run in 8⅓ innings this spring. … Right-hander Victor Mederos, who hadn’t allowed a run in his first six innings this spring, gave up three runs in 2⅔ innings. He worked a scoreless fifth. He gave up three in the sixth, getting pulled with two outs. He re-entered for the seventh and added a perfect inning. … Luis Garcia, who recorded the final out of the sixth inning, ended up getting credit for the victory. … Closer Carlos Estévez worked a perfect ninth to pick up the save. It was the first time this spring that Estévez had been used in a save situation.

HITTING REPORT: Drury hit his first homer of the spring, a two-run shot that capped a five-run sixth inning to give the Angels their first lead of the game. The Angels had a single, double, triple and homer in the inning. … Mike Trout started the inning with a bloop triple. The ball was a pop-up that dropped just beyond the reach of the diving right fielder. Trout, who struck out in his other two trips, is 6 for 29 (.207) this spring. … Aaron Hicks yanked a two-run double into right field. Livan Soto scored from first on the play, sliding just under the tag. … Earlier in the game, Luis Rengifo lined a single into center field and he doubled. They were his first two hits of the spring. Rengifo, who is now 2 for 11, got a late start because of a hamstring issue. … Anthony Rendon grounded out twice in his first game after missing a week because of groin tightness.

UConn women celebrate Geno Auriemma’s 70th birthday with comfortable first-round win over Jackson State

STORRS, Conn. — All-American Paige Bueckers and her teammates had a special gift for UConn coach Geno Auriemma on his 70th birthday — a 30th consecutive first-round win in the NCAA Tournament.

Bueckers scored 28 points, freshman Ashlynn Shade added 26 and the No. 3 seeded Huskies beat Jackson State 86-64 on Saturday.

“Happy birthday Grandpa,” Bueckers said at the post-game press conference, as her coach flicked water from his drinking cup in her direction.

Aaliyah Edwards, wearing a mask after missing two games with a broken nose, had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies (30-5), who took control of the game early and led by as many as 28-points.

Ti'Ian Boler scored 25 points and Angel Jackson had 13 for 14th seeded Jackson State (26-7), which lost for the first time in 22 games.

The Tigers' Miya Crump opened the game with a jumper and Jackson State led briefly at 4-2.

But Bueckers sparked a 17-0 Husky run by scoring 8 of UConn’s first 10 points. She gave Connecticut its first lead at 5-4 on an up-and-under layup and foul shot.

UConn led 22-8 after 10 minutes, and took its first 20-point lead at 39-19 on a 3-pointer from Bueckers, who also pulled down 11 rebounds and had seven assists in the game.

“Paige, when she starts off like that, it makes everybody feel a lot more confident," Auriemma said. "They can breath a little bit easier knowing that she's pretty much taken control of the game."

Boler’s 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer sent the teams into the half with UConn leading 49-28.

A 3-pointer from Nika Muhl as the third quarter expired put the Huskies up 72-50 and Connecticut cruised from there.

UConn shot 50 percent from the field and finished with nine 3-pointers, five of them from Shade.

“It was such a surreal moment to be out there," the freshman said of her first NCAA Tournament game. ”It was just really exciting."

The Huskies improved to 13-1 in games played on their coach's birthday.

Jackson State: This was the Tigers' third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years. They have never advanced past the first round, but coach Tomekia Reed said is was proud of how her team has represented historically black schools.

Greek authorities seize 3.75 million capsules of contraband nerve pain drug pregabalin

ATHENS, Greece — Greek authorities said Saturday they seized more than three tons of the prescription nerve pain drug pregabalin and impounded a yacht registered in the United Kingdom.

The operation took place Thursday night at the port of Lavrio, 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of Athens, the coast guard said.

On the yacht, the coast guard found 3.75 million capsules of Nervigesic, a brand name used by Indian pharmaceuticals firm HAB Pharma for pregabalin. The capsules were packaged in 500 cardboard boxes weighing nearly 3.15 tons, the statement said.

Pregabalin is used to treat nerve pain caused by a variety of conditions, such as diabetes and shingles, and also to treat a type of seizure called partial seizure because it has its origin at a single location in the brain.

The raid was ordered based on information from Greece’s “National Intelligence Agency about the activity of networks of Egyptian nationals in Greek territory,” the statement said.

The yacht and its contents remain at the Lavrio port while local authorities conduct an investigation, the coast guard said.

LSU's Angel Reese puts shot-blocking MTSU front court on notice entering second-round NCAA tilt

B ATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Angel Reese balked at the suggestion that LSU could have its hands full with a Middle Tennessee front court that includes players listed at 6-foot-6 and 6-5.

“They have to go against Angel Reese, Aneesah Morrow, and Aalyah Del Rosario,” Reese shot back, eliciting a grin from teammate Flau'Jae Johnson, who sat beside her at the dais Saturday. “So they have to work on that and figure that out first.

“Secondly, we focus on our matchups, of course, in our film room,” Reese continued. “It’s going to be a team effort. It’s not going to be just two matchups. We have great guards, too. It’s going to be a team focus. If they focus on two players, they’re in trouble."

The defending national champion and third-seeded Tigers (29-5) will be on their home court when they meet No. 11 seed Middle Tennessee (30-4) on Sunday in the second round of the women's NCAA Tournament.

The Blue Raiders are on a 20-game winning streak after overcoming an 18-point, first-half deficit to beat Louisville in the first round on Friday.

The Blue Raiders' starting center is Anastasiia Boldyreva, listed at 6-6. Her backup is the 6-5 Iullia Grabovskaia, who sometimes is paired with Boldyreva in the front court. The two Russians have combined to block 108 shots this season.

That presents an intriguing matchup with LSU. Its top two scorers this season have been the 6-3 Reese (19 points per game) and fellow post player Morrow (16.5), who is 6-1.

Boldyreva sounds eager for the test that Reese will present.

“She's a highly athletic player, obviously,” Boldyreva said. “She physical, really fast. ... We just know she's all around the rim, and we've got to try to match it.”

Boldyreva also has noticed the emotion Reese plays with, and is bracing for some psychological gamesmanship. Reese is widely remembered for glaring at Iowa star Caitlin Clark and pointing at her ring finger when LSU was on the verge of defeating the Hawkeyes in last season's national title game.

“It's always difficult because they get the (home) crowd and they get hyped,” Boldyreva said. “We just need to not get sucked into talking back or being chippy. We just have to stay in our game.”

VALUING THE BALL

LSU looked somewhat off its game in the first round against Rice , turning the ball over a season-high 24 times.

Coach Kim Mulkey and her players described the performance as ugly. So ugly, in fact, that Mulkey didn't even bother reviewing video of the game.

“Oh, Lord,” Mulkey said. “Middle Tennessee’s too good for me to worry about what happened (Friday). No, we’re watching Middle Tennessee as soon as that game was over. We don’t even talk about that game. No, I don’t want to go back and look at that.”

The Tigers saw the performance as uncharacteristic and fixable. Middle Tennessee players who watched LSU's game on Friday seemed to agree.

“I know they can play better than that,” Middle Tennessee guard Jalynn Gregory said. “I’ve seen them, and I’ve watched them. So I know what they’re capable of. We’re going to expect their best. So they’re also going to get our best.

“We are not going to underestimate them,” she said.

HISTORY LESSON

Sunday's game will mark the second time LSU and Middle Tennessee have met in the second round of an women's NCAA Tournament.

The first time was back in 1986. LSU won, 78-65.
