Gaff for sale (sail)
What is a Gaff?
A sail gaff is a type of spar (pole) used to support the head of a fore-and-aft sail. It is most commonly used on sailing vessels and is similar in style to a lugsail's yard. The sail gaff is held in place by the gaff jaws, which are hoisted up to the mast. The gaff is positioned so that the sail has the correct angle of attack in relation to the wind. The gaff vang and/or topping lift keeps the gaff rigid and in place when the sail is set. The gaff can also be used to support a boom that holds an extra sail known as a spanker. A sail gaff, when added to the sail, makes the vessel more efficient and allows for a variety of sail designs.
Which manufacturers build gaff sail boats?
Manufacturers that produce gaff sail boats include Cornish Crabbers , Norfolk Gypsy , Fountaine Pajot , Elkins and Cape Cutter .
How much does a gaff sail boat cost?
A used gaff sail boat on TheYachtMarket.com ranges in price from £12,000 GBP to £3,370,000 GBP with an average price of £266,000 GBP . Factors including the condition, age, model and specification will affect the price of a gaff.

David moss gaff cutter for sale, wooden ships comments on this award-winning designed classic sailing yacht.
Designed and built by David Moss of Fleetwood, she was launched in 2017 and won the Classic Boat award for the best traditional new build sailing yacht under 40’.
She has the DNA of a traditional working sailing boat with a full bilge, transom stern and simple gaff cutter rig but has been refined by Moss with more than a hint of ‘yachtiness’. Built to his exacting standards with good quality materials, she has now spent a few seasons being worked up and developed by her diligent owner so that she is now a well-proven and ready-to-go yacht.
At 31’ LOD, she is a handy-sized sailing boat , not too big to be a handful for her crew, but large enough to allow for the deep sheltered cockpit, over 6’ headroom and four good berths below, plus a heads compartment and decent galley.
The choice of gaff cutters in this bracket is very limited as most are either much larger or smaller. This excellent sailing yacht for sale strikes the perfect balance between size and manageability.

Owner’s Comments on the design
David and I developed the lines taking inspiration from a number of different craft from around the the 1930’s. William Atkins Fore An’ Aft was one and also German Frers Senior’s Fjord II. Colin Archer had some input and Peter Bret’s original wooden Rival, the D24. A number of ½” to the foot half-models were carved, I think 5 in all and after much deliberation the design for Polly was arrived at. It’s true to say I was in favour of a more traditional Gaff-rig profile of straight stem with a bit of drag and David thought we should have some cutaway and a horizontal keel with some rocker. A 1” to the foot model was constructed and measurements taken off and scaled up for the build.
Most of the timber came in tree from Summerscales; Iroko from the West coast of Africa, teak from Burma. David found a supplier who had very long lengths of old seasoned Oregan Pine for the spars which could all be got out in entire lengths. As with the decks there are no scarphs.
Was it all worth it? Well Polly has the most comfortable motion at sea of any yacht I have sailed on – with the possible exception of Overlord which is a might bigger! The generous displacement of 10t on 30 foot overall length plays it’s part although there are many other factors which contribute. She is also exceptionally comfortable lying to anchor which is a great asset.
The triple strake bulwarks and wide decks around the mast make working the rig a joy.
Construction
Carvel planked in 1 1/8” iroko all copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers of 1.5” x 2” section.
Laminated iroko stem and keel, fastened through with bronze bolts.

Oak bitts through the deck to take the heel of the bowsprit. Manual windlass with capstan from Deep Blue Engineering also mounted on the bitts.

1982 Scheeps & Jachtbouw Steel Gaff Rigged Ketch
Deltaville, Virginia
1982 Scheeps & Jachtbouw Steel Gaff Rigged Ketch 'Pacifique' is a Louis Van De Wiele designed boat, based on the famous 'Omoo', which was sailed round the world from 1949 - 1953 by famous Belgian yachtswoman Annie Van de Wiele. This boat was built by one of the Scheeps and Jachtbouw Boatyards in Weidewiek, Netherlands and smacks of traditional boating at its best. With 5mm cold galvanized, epoxy coated overlapping steel plates on the hull and 4mm epoxy coated steel decks, she is extremely strong and built particularly to voyage in temperate latitudes and has been as far north as Greenland. She can handle any weather conditions. The current owner had her built in 1980/1 and has been cruising her, either full time or part time, ever since. However, it is time to move to shore and leave the sailing to someone younger, but with the passion. The strong steel hull is as good as new, the interior is functional, the rigging is largely block and tackle/dead eye, the gaff-rigged ketch sail plan will have traditionalists 'oohing and ahing', the long bowsprit adds to the sail area and to the fabulous lines of this head-turning sailing vessel. The owner is motivated to sell and will entertain reasonable offers from genuine buyers who are looking to live the dream.

This is Hull #1, 1961, Windjammer 21's from California, designed by Morgan Embrogan and built in Southern California back in the 60's and early 70's by various commercial builders. There were at least 15 built and I have a gaff-rigged, topsail cutter. This Windjammer sailed to Hawaii and back from California twice and to Alaska and back to CA. boats have very easily folded masts, even under sail, fit into US containers (24). The Windjammer 21 will sleep 4 in separate bunks and is very comfortable under way and in the slip. With quadrant centerboard up it draw 18 inches and weight empty is 2500#. It has always been great in the Channel Islands because it cuts over the kelp and because it is so light we used to tie off to the kelp (don't shoot me) to keep from carrying 600' feet of line and extra chain necessary to normal anchor around the islands. Boat is in Charleston, SC now on a trailer. Steel trailer has 4 new tires, wheels, bearings, recently pulled from Florida. 6 bags of sails, all rigging, outboard in a well, boat is ready to sail but could use some TLC, paint, varnish, etc. Photo of Black hull boat is a sistership. Could deliver for a fee if needed after purchase.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision
For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.
It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.
Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.
His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.
"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.
Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'
The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.
Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.
"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.
"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.
"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."
Tough decision to sell
Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.
Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.
"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.
"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."
Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.
"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.
He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.
"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.
"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."
'Next phase' for the boat
The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.
When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.
"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.
"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.
"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."
Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.
"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.
Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.
"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.
"It's always been a part of his life."

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital
There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.
How to find the right boat?
There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.
Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.
This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.
Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such option offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).
If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.
Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.
How to buy tickets?
Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.
“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!” wrote (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.
Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.
Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.
Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.
Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as this offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.
This website (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other website sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.
Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.
“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.
There are two main boarding piers in the city center: Hotel Ukraine and Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.
Where to sit onboard?
Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.
The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.
Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.
There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
