Zephyr is the result of a tremendous design, built to exacting European standards, then methodically refined over 15 years by an experienced shipwright. There is little if anything left to improve upon in this boat. For the sailor who appreciates an easily driven and timeless hull shape, heavy duty construction and meticulous attention to detail, Zephyr stands apart.

The Ohlson 38 was designed by Einer Ohlson. Many of the 38s were built or finished in Ohlson’s home country of Sweden, while others like  Zephyr were built and finished at Tyler Yachts in England. When the design was first built in the late 1960s, the imperative was still to create a relatively narrow, easily driven hull that went through the water withe ease. While the rudder and keel are separated, the keel is long enough to provide excellent tracking and directional stability.

The cockpit is secure and comfortable, with storage in lockers and a large lazarette. The side decks are wide with excellent handholds all the way forward. It’s an easy deck to move around on, particularly in a bouncing sea.

Below decks, the interior is beautifully finished, particularly where the owner has rebuilt it. The forepeak, for instance, was gutted and rebuilt and is now a luxurious owner’s cabin. The shower stall to starboard was replaced by a counter and sink. The spaces, and storage, are clearly designed to work at sea.

The original Tyler construction is impressive, with substantial stringers running along the hull sides. Combined with the vinylester solid fiberglass layup of both the hull and decks, this makes the Ohlson 38 is an amazingly strong boat. The entire deck and hull have been thoroughly insulated.

Zephyr ’s owner has had a longstanding relationship with various Ohlson designs, racing and cruising them, dating back to the wooden 35-footers. Zephyr stands as both an outstanding example of craftsmanship and a vision of what a classic design can be. There isn’t a harbor in the world where  Zephyr  wouldn’t garner attention.

Interior Accommodations

Zephy r’s interior is inviting and cozy, with traditional carpentry defining the space. Starting forward is a comfortable V-berth with a fitted, spring mattress. The head is to port and a vanity to starboard, with plenty of storage and room to move around. The main cabin features a settee to starboard and dinette to port, which can extend to accommodate guests at the dinner table or be lowered to create a double berth. Storage is accessible and abundant. The navigation station is to starboard at the base of the companionway with a quarterberth extending aft. The galley is to port.

The deck has been modernized with modern stoppers and winches, but otherwise retains the same character as when she was launched: elegant simplicity and uncompromising quality. The Dorade boxes were built from wood aged in San Francisco from Alameda Shipyards.  The rail mounted propane box was built to extraordinarily tight tolerances and coated with 8 coats of varnish.

Sail Zephyr - Gallery

The Zephyr is a completely new type of sailing vessel. Most conventional sailing boats have either a ballast keel or multiple hulls for stability. Even dinghies need an athletic crew to keep the dinghy upright. Sail area is limited to the stability of the hull limiting the performance of the vessel. The zephyr is a three person small narrow 15ft light-weight trimaran dinghy. The zephyr has a large wing that enables it to sail well in light airs. In heavy airs the wing can be lowered moving to leeward whilst tipping to windward eliminating the heeling moment. All the wind force is generating lift and speed all while the crew is simply sitting facing forward.

ZEPHYR CLASS

A SIXTY-YEAR PHENOMENON - AND COUNTING

"The Zephyr was given its name from a similarly titled gentle breeze in the Greek Islands. My boats tended to be gentle little boats, sweet in their line, so I called it a Zephyr." - Des Townson 2006

The Zephyr yacht is a one person sailing yacht designed by New Zealander Des Townson in 1956. It is one of New Zealand's most popular single person sailing yachts with over 300 wooden boats and a number of the recent fibreglass hull versions being sailed nationwide.

Regular weekend (and sometimes midweek) racing with big fleets is held by yacht clubs in Christchurch, Wellington, Tauranga and Auckland.

With more young and older people getting into sailing, the Zephyr has proven to be an easy boat to learn sailing in and at the same time providing one class design competition for the best of New Zealand sailors.

WHO SAILS A ZEPHYR?

The Zephyr fleet is composed of sailors from teen years until 70s, men and women.

Zephyrs are an ideal boat for both casual and competitive sailors, with a diverse range of sailing and racing backgrounds throughout the fleet. Boat numbers are strong throughout NZ with enjoyable racing from yacht clubs to National Championships.

SAILOR WEIGHT

After some National Championships, the ZOA takes a look a the distribution of boat weight, skipper weights and finishing position. An approxiamate range of sailor weights is as follows:

• 58-120kg in the Nationals fleet
• 65 - 86kg in the top ten
• 65 - 92kg in the top 20

You can be competitive in a Zephyr at 65-90kg and can enjoy sailing it at anything from 50-120kg!

By comparison, the accepted weight range (kgs) to be competitive for other classess are: Finn 90-105; Laser 78-82; Radial is 65-68; OK is 80-90.

There is also the option of putting a reef in so the really light sailors can be very competitive when it blows.

The Zephyr is a fully responsive, light on the helm, single-handed boat. While the majority of the fleet are wooden construction (over 300), the move to fibre glass construction was recent.

In 2020 Mackay Boats became the builder for the Class, applying the same knowledge and processes used to manufacture consistent, one-design Olympic Class yachts for the Zephyr Class.

Designed by Des Townsend, a New Zealand Yacht Designer icon, in 1956, the Zephyr  has had seven builders over its 60 years of life, with MacKay Boats taking over the Zephyr’s hull construction in 2020. These boats are known as the #700 series.

Racing is highly competitive in this class which sees an average of 80 entries at its New Zealand National Championships.

The Hull and Deck

The hull is built from an epoxy laminate with a PVC foam core which are similar materials used in the construction of the 49ers. The laminate is designed to replicate the structure of the existing wooden boats.

The boat comes with all controls fitted, where the best fittings available are used for each function.

Can Mackay's customise the fitout?

The boat has a standard fit-out with a couple of options available.

For a fully custom fit-out you have the choice of buying the bare hull and then fitting it out yourself.

Can I have a different colour boat?

Grey is the standard colour. A limited range of other colours are available as an upgrade option. Special colour request are only available when a new batch of boats is being built.

Can I buy just the hull?

Yes. Bare hull comes with maststep, vang tang, venturis and chainplates only fitted.

Zephyr (Sweisguth)

Zephyr (Sweisguth) is a 24 ′ 0 ″ / 7.3 m monohull sailboat designed by Francis Sweisguth starting in 1930.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Sailing Zephyr

The next questions that usually follow after "How can you afford to sail?" generally are "What kind of boat is Zephyr?" and "How much did it cost?". Whilst we aren't ready to go over price just yet (and we promise we will), below is a little bit about our home.

Zephyr is a 2010 Beneteau Oceanis 43. She's kitted out with some cool features such as a stern arch with 2 x 410w Sun Power Solar Panels , water maker and a davit system for carrying the tender. She has 3 double berths and 2 heads along with a comfy salon. We got lucky as her previous owners were down right meticulous in looking after her and insuring that there is a spare for every spare part on board. James can often be heard, as he is digging around in the aft lockers, 'Man, we got spares for days!". 

Back Story... ​

One day, after Nat had spent some time going down the YouTube rabbit hole, she came across a few sailing channels and was immediately inspired. I came home from work one day and Nat said "We should buy a boat and sail the world!". My immediate reaction was "Really, I can't just give up my job and leave everything...sorry honey". A couple months later I fell down the YouTube rabbit hole and landed on some various sailing channels. To say I was immediately hooked would be an understatement and within about 30 mins I was turning around on the lounge and saying to Nat "ummm, maybe we should buy a boat". ​

With the help of our good friend Bobo (an amazing human & surfer from Tortola), we found Zephyr in a boat yard at Nanny Cay in the BVI's. She'd been stored for the 2017 storm season, when Irma decided to plow through uninvited. Fortunately, Zephyr only lost her mast and picked up a few bumps & scrapes. ​ We decided to make an offer and long story short, the next thing we knew we owned a boat in the BVI's that didn't have a mast. ​ I could talk about all the plans for Zephyr's fix-up and launch, but you'll be able to catch up on all the progress through our weekly videos.or in deeper detail through Patreon where we offer exclusive content to our Patrons.
