Brazilian billionaire's superyacht pays a visit to Victoria's Inner Harbour

The visiting Anawa certainly puts the “super” in superyacht.

The 203-foot-long vessel dwarfed most of the other vessels in Victoria Harbour on Tuesday. The MV Coho is larger at 341 feet, but it doesn’t have the same swag — the Anawa carries its own helicopter on deck.

Anawa was custom-designed and built in 2020 by Damen Yachting. It’s one of the company’s SeaXplorer class of vessels, billed as “long-range, luxury expedition” yachts.

It can carry 12 guests and 15 crew plus a captain, Damen said.

It’s owned by Brazilian billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann, according to superfanyacht.com. Forbes.com says the investor-philanthropist lives in Switzerland and is worth $14.8 billion.

Superyacht with 66-metre support yacht spotted off Victoria

The 87-metre yacht Lonian superyacht pictured from Gonzalez Hill Regional Park in Victoria. (CTV News)

A pair of multimillion-dollar yachts sailed past Victoria on Monday, both owned by billionaire brothers who made the bulk of their fortunes as owners of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

The 87-metre yacht Lonian was trailed by its 66-metre support yacht Hodor, described by Boat International magazine as "the world's largest floating toy box."

While the Lonian can accommodate 12 guests, 27 crew and a helicopter of its own, the catamaran-style support ship acts as a kind of floating garage, carrying speedboats, jet skis, motorcycles and ATVs.

"The idea was to get all the clutter off the mothership and on board a dedicated vessel," the Hodor's first officer told the magazine last year.

"There was no need to restrict the quantity of toys we put on board. The owner just let us go ahead and fill it with cool stuff."

The Hodor's designer, Incat Crowther, says the support ship "accommodates an astounding number of toys, facilities and personnel," which includes a submarine garage and a scuba-diving platform complete with onboard air compressors and "a hospital with decompression chamber."

According to financial transparency website OpenCorporates , the vessels are owned by a pair of holding companies controlled by Fertitta Enterprises, the family company of Lorenzo Fertitta and brother Frank Fertitta III.

According to Forbes magazine, the casino-magnate brothers bought the UFC for US$2 million in 2001 and sold it in 2016 for US$4 billion, while retaining stakes in the company which sold in 2017 at a US$5-billion valuation.

Vessel-tracking website marinetraffic.com indicates the yachts were en route to Vancouver from Seattle.

6 days cruising from Vancouver to Victoria on a superyacht

Vancouver to gibsons, sunshine coast.

You board your superyacht at the Coal Harbour Marina in Vancouver. As you head to your first destination on the Sunshine Coast, you’ll already feel like you’re in a peaceful island getaway even though it’s actually still on the mainland. Accessible only by ferry or air, this strip of quiet beaches, cedar forests, hiking trails, summer cottages, and artist colonies — there is the highest population of artists in Canada here —  is just two hours from Vancouver. Enjoy the quiet beauty and explore onshore.

Silva Bay Marina

Heading from Gibsons to Silva Bay on Gabriola Island, the coast is a bouquet of greens and blues as the multitude of islands come in and out of view. Silva Bay is a very popular destination for yachts; there are friendly people running superb restaurants and pubs. Gabriola is known for its laid-back lifestyle: you are truly on island time now.

Galiano Island’s Montague Harbour

From Silva Bay, it is a beautiful and breathtaking cruise along Trincomali Channel to Galiano Island’s unique Montague Harbour. With its sheltered waters and abundant salmon and shellfish, it is heir to a rich history. Montague is a delight for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers in any season, but particularly during the long hot days of summer. On the northwest edge of Gray Peninsula is a spectacular rock ledge, carved into rippling patterns by glaciers thousands of years ago.

Nanaimo is an urban oasis that sits comfortably between the Strait of Georgia to the east and a surrounding Vancouver Island landscape of peaks, valleys and forested wilderness. The result is the best of both worlds as cosmopolitan pursuits are balanced by a vast range of recreational opportunities. All the urbane pleasures of a modestly big city – dining, shopping, museums, festivals, and art galleries included – can be enjoyed here. Dine ashore before retiring to your comfortable yacht in the evening.

Salt Spring Island’s Ganges Harbour

Salt Spring Island is a unique place, famed for its pastoral beauty, markets, organic farming, artists, and artisans – and, most recently, healers and wellness professionals. The landscape blends forests, meadows, beaches, mountains, lakes, the ocean, and rolling countryside. This is a great place to hike and see nature and wildlife, including many endangered species. There are endless adventures on Salt Spring Island, or just take in the scenery from your yacht’s aft deck.

About 40 nautical miles west of Vancouver, across the Strait of Georgia, begins the beautiful passage through the Gulf Islands to Vancouver Island. This journey is gorgeously rich in coastal forest and beautiful ocean vistas. At the southern tip of Vancouver Island sits Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, with an inner harbor that is the heart of the city. Well known for its museums, shops, and excellent restaurants, enjoy the culturally rich small city before saying goodbye to your yacht.

If you have been inspired by this itinerary don't miss our guide to five activities that make Vancouver the perfect family superyacht destination .

19 Jan Superyacht Zenith Docks In Victoria

Zenith by sabre catamarans.

I had the pleasure of snapping photos and video of the Invictus superyacht that rolled into Victoria’s harbour last summer, and now Zenith. We don’t have a lot of room for many superyachts at once here in Victoria but Zenith has been happily sitting docked right in our best spot.

While we do have plans for a bigger port just a couple minutes away, our inner harbour does a damn fine job. The Fairmont Empress looks lovely in the background and manages to make this superyacht look a tad bit small.

This boat was built by Sabre Catamarans in Western Australia in 2012 and has come a long way to reach our little corner of the globe. This vessel features some of the latest technology which makes crossing the planet on this baby a breeze.

Incat Crowther performed naval architecture and engineering work on the vessel, with exterior design by Waterline Design who also designed the luxurious interior. I didn’t go inside her obviously but I can only image what it would be like to take a trip on this yacht.

Zenith can get up to its top speeds of 25 knots thanks to the twin MTU 12V 4000 M90 diesel engine and an impressive range of up to 3500 nautical miles. For all the cruising she’s done in the past couple of years she looked brand new still.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT US

Our happy little boats have been connecting locals and visitors to Victoria's waterfront neighbourhoods, parks and communities for almost 30 years. Beat the traffic and join us on the water for incredible views along the way.

We enjoyed our tour of the inner harbour and gorge. Ben was very knowledgeable and kind. He was great with my two kids and took the time to be very thorough about the areas we were passing by. Overall it was a great experience.

What a great view of Victoria from the water! I'm new to Victoria so am trying to experience life as a tourist. My Guide Fenn was so pleasant and very knowledgable. I took the Combo Tour of the Gorge and Vic West. It was well worth the 45 minute ride. I would definitely recommend it to visitors.

If you come to Victoria anytime between May and October do yourself a solid and take the Harbour Ferry (yes harbour has a "U" in it when visiting Canada) ...it will take you around one of the world's cleanest and most beloved cities. Get on the water and Putt Putt Toot Toot!

As local residents we definitely recommend the Victoria Harbour Ferry - especially for visitors from the prairies. It gives visitors an interesting water experience while and features a spectacular view of the Victoria Harbour.

My family and I really enjoyed our Inner Harbour Ferry Tour. It was our first experience and I can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed it! We learned so much about Victoria and the views were stunning! It is a working harbour so there is so much to experience. A must do!

Our happy little boats have been connecting locals and visitors to Victoria’s waterfront neighbourhoods, parks and communities for over 30 years. Connect to our network of trails, pathways and join us on the water for incredible views along the way.

yacht in victoria

If you’ve been to Victoria’s Boom + Batten Restaurant & Cafe recently, you may have noticed the massive 208-foot sailing yacht poking out from in behind the building.

If you’re wanting to know who owns it, you’re not the only one!

Unfortunately, this $35 million dollar beauty’s owner remains a mystery.

Known as Athos , the vessel was initially owned by Dutch millionaire, Geert Pepping — the CEO of Seatrade and an influential figure in the maritime industry, before it was sold in 2022 to an unknown buyer.

With running costs of $4 million a year, it is the world’s largest privately-owned two-masted schooner and is described as “one of the most technologically sophisticated classic sailing yachts in existence” on superyachtfans.com .

It was designed by Andre Hoek and built by Holland Jachtbouw with a blend of style and luxury, and is said to be a testament to yacht design and craftsmanship.

In 2022 Athos received a bit of a lift to mark its next journey.

The refit at Huisfit notably added 1.25-metres to the stern overhang, a challenging task to ensure a seamless integration into the structure.

Here are some images detailing additions under its new ownership:

Whoever it is, they sure know how to ride in style!

School children rescued from burning boat in Victoria

A group of school children were among 22 people rescued after the boat they were travelling on caught fire in waters off Victoria ’s Bellarine Peninsula.

The boat was travelling off the coast of Queenscliff, taking Year 8 and 9 students to swim with dolphins, when its engine bay caught fire about 8.30am on Thursday.

Sea All Dolphin Swims skipper James Murphy saw smoke coming from the engine room and raised the alarm.

Twenty-two passengers, including students from Alexandra College in western Victoria, had to be evacuated onto a ferry nearby.

A Searoad Ferries vessel was the closest one to the students, and diverted from its route from Queenscliffe to Sorrento to rescue those on board.

“Nobody was injured,” police said.

One ferry passenger, Di Hawkins told 7NEWS: “I spoke to some of the kids, and they seemed pretty excited about the whole thing, so they weren’t disturbed whatsoever.”

Murphy stayed on the damaged vessel until it was declared safe, before driving it to shore, the damage declared not serious enough to require towing.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious, and police are investigating how it started.

‘Fancy cars and flashy yachts’: criminals living the high life targeted by Victoria’s unexplained wealth laws

Police minister says those who ‘swan around with ill-gotten gains’ will be pursued in reforms that flip onus of proof

Organised crime figures who splash out on yachts, penthouse suites and sex workers will be targeted by the Victorian government, under new laws that will force them to repay any wealth they cannot prove was lawfully acquired.

The state’s attorney general, Jaclyn Symes, and police minister, Anthony Carbines, on Tuesday announced they will introduce the Confiscation Amendment (Unexplained Wealth) Bill to parliament, in an effort to deprive criminals of the “use and enjoyment of their unexplained wealth”.

Symes said the new laws would flip the onus from police and prosecutors – who currently have to prove a direct link between a criminal and their wealth – to the offender.

“The barrier has been is that we’ve had to demonstrate that [wealth] is connected to criminal activity. The onus now will be flipped under this legislation, you will have to demonstrate that you obtained it by legal means,” she said.

“It’s very likely unless they won Tattslotto and they can show their winning ticket. They probably were doing illegal activities to obtain their wealth.”

Victoria’s attorney general Jaclyn Symes announced the reforms on Tuesday.

Carbines said the changes will also capture assets bought in a partner or relative’s name as well as gifts, “consumable wealth and wealth that has been gifted, disposed of or expended”.

“If you want to swan around with ill-gotten gains and wealth that doesn’t belong to you, that you’ve accrued illegally, police will be able to pursue you. They’ll be able to pursue your family and your partners,” he said.

“If organised crime bosses think that they can have the fancy cars, flashy yachts, spend their money on hotels and strippers, if you draw your attention to yourself, Victoria police will be after you.

“They will be able to use these laws to crack out and reclaim the stolen wealth that ill gotten gains, and it’s about continuing to make sure we put the pressure on organised crime.”

The new laws will allow the Director of Public Prosecutions to apply to a court for an order if there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a person’s total wealth exceeds their lawfully acquired wealth by at least $200,000.

If a person can’t satisfy a court that they have lawfully obtained their wealth, a court may order them to pay the state the value of anything they cannot prove was lawfully acquired.

The laws have been modelled on those currently in place in Western Australian, but are also similar to New South Wales’ laws, which were also bolstered in 2023 to allow police to seize and freeze wealth and assets without a specific offence.

The opposition leader, John Pesutto, questioned why it had taken so long for the government to introduce the legislation, though he said he supported the concept in principal.

“Frankly, after 10 years, you have to ask, what is it actually doing to crack down on organised crime?” he said.

Victorian ferry rescues children from boat after fears of fire off Queenscliff

A white ferry with 'Searoad Ferries' on its side.

Victorian school students have been rescued from a boat in Port Phillip this morning after its engine started smoking.

Police said 22 passengers, including school students, were in the boat off Queenscliff when a suspected engine bay fire broke out about 8:30am.

A ferry and a Parks Victoria vessel quickly responded a short time later and all passengers were safely evacuated onto the ferry.

Nobody was injured, a police spokesperson said.

A spokesperson from the school, Hamilton and Alexandra College, said a group of year eight and nine students were attending a two-day outdoor education camp in Queenscliff when the incident occurred.

"This morning, 20 students and two staff members were on board a snorkelling boat when the engine stopped working and a small amount of smoke was detected," the spokesperson said.

"As a precautionary measure, action was taken immediately to have all passengers calmly evacuated onto the Queenscliff-Sorrento Ferry."

The owner of the boat escorting the students, James Murphy, said the evacuation of was a standard procedure following a "very minor incident".

"Shortly after departure the skipper noticed a little bit of smoke coming from the engine room, he's then reverted back to our safety management system procedures," Mr Murphy told ABC.

"Part of those procedures is to ensure everybody on board are safe, so [the skipper] has called the local vessel … and they've collected the passengers while he ascertained what the challenge was.

"He was able to get the boat started again, no challenge, and driven it back to the harbour so we're treating it as a very minor incident."

Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the fire were still being investigated, but it was not being treated as suspicious.
