Victoria Thunder Tiger Description

This is a radio controlled sail boat. Advances in miniaturization of radio control equipment, high technology construction materials for the hull and rigging, and small batteries have resulted in models that work like the real thing.

The boat is really fun to sail, responding quickly to the controls and moving quickly even in small winds. It is easy to build and later modify to improve performance. Care must be taken when modifying your boat as many modifications are not allowed by the class rules and will make your boat ineligable for competition.

I gave my father-in-law a kit, so I would have someone to race. He built a standard Victoria by Thunder Tiger. I was not happy with the standard version and so decided to modify my boat.

Modifications:

The objectives for many of my modifications were simple.

  • water tight: No boat will ever be completely dry. I wanted to make mine as dry as possible.
  • ease of rigging: The cleats and line adjusters were difficult for me to use. I wanted to be able to make adjustements easily and for the adjustments to be retained, no matter the stress or wind speed.
  • increased strength: Some of the components are weak and subject to breaking or cracking. These needed to be reinforced or replaced with stronger material.
  • weight reduction: Reducing the weight in general, and above the water level in particular will make the boat respond more quickly, both in turning and acceleration.

Do not modify your boat if you expect to compete in the Victoria Class. Only certain modifications are allowed and must be carefully considered before doing them. Many of the modifications below will help solve multiple problems but most are not legal for competition.

The hull is vacume formed and has some thin areas. Additional fiber glass reinforcements were added in the bow to prevent water leaking. The keel area is also weak, so some plywood and glass were added here as well.

Two stringers were added across the hull on which to mount the servo and receiver board. Note the two holes at each end of the board and the holes in the stringers. The stringers have nuts epoxied to the bottom of the stringer and the receiver board bolts through. The four batteries, now NiMH rechargables, are installed in two battery holders and mounted with double stick tape. The batteries can be moved around in the bottom hull to balance the boat. I will use Velcro fastening tape next time.

The sail servo has a new arm fabricated out of thin aluminium. The pulley on the left of the arm adjusts the main sail and the one on the right adjustes the jib. The receiver is mounted under the board in the continued effort to lower the weight in the boat.

The keel is attached with a Nyloc nut, in order to prevent loss while at sea. The stays are attached to brass eyes, bolted into small wood ply plates under the deck. The stays are attached to clips similar to those found on model aircraft linkages and are removable. Small loops have been soldered to allow attachement of the lines. These allow tensioning of the rig.

The mast is a carbon fiber tube, found at many kite stores. Many of the rigging materials, including sail cloth can be found online at kite supply houses. The boom and jib boom are also carbon fiber and have small brass cotter pins inserted in small holes where lines need to be attached. I used fishing gear for many of the line connectors and fishing line for most of the lines.

The on and off switch is actually also the battery charging port. A five pin DIN connector is mounted to the deck. It allows wiring access to each separate battery pack and to the receiver and servos. The plug shown in the picture above, is connected to a string attached to the mast base, and is for sailing. When plugged in, it connects the batteries to the receiver and servos. When the plug is removed, the boat is effectively turned off.

Another plug shown to the left, is connected to a battery charger and can be inserted in the socket. Now the batteries are connected to the charger and the batteries can be charged without removing them.

One of my biggest complaints was the difficulty of using the small cleats and line adjusters.

In order to adjust the jib and main sail lines, I lead the lines through the holes into the cockpit. I then plugged the holes, effectively pinching the lines in place, with tooth picks. The remaining line was looped around the picks with half hitches. Not elegant but it worked.

The through deck fair lead is a Nylon concrete fastener with rounded edges. This eases the movement of the line through the deck and provides some mimimal water protection with a raised area.

The hatch cover is clear plastic sheet, as found at the local office supply and is attached using 3M tape. The type of tape used to water proof model power boats has been extensively tested and works well.

The masthead crane was fabricated out of aluminium and has two brass bolts and nuts to allow adjusting jib tension and main sail height. The line is wound around the bolt once and the nuts tightened. Again, not elegant, but easy to do.

Many lines were upgraded to a 60 pound test line. The line has a flattened oval cross section and when tightened, vibrates in heavy winds. It is an amazing sound, similar to that found on real boats as the wind hums and screams.

Rules & Handicaps

THE RACING RULES OF SAILING 2021 – 2024

Every sport follows a set of rules and regulations, and sailing is no different. All sailors should take the time to learn the rules, and comply with them sufficiently. Breaching the rules may lead to a protest hearing, and more serious consequences that affect the safety of everyone on the water.

The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) governs the sport of sailboat and sailboard racing. It is revised and published every four years by World Sailing. The current edition is The RRS 2021 – 2024.

Rules sessions are sometimes held at the Club if you’d like to learn more, so keep an eye on our events page.

The current Racing Rules of Sailing (Blue Book) including the Australian Sailing Prescriptions are available to download here . The office does not have hard copies.

Please download what you need by visiting  Racing Rules 2017-2020

PERFORMANCE HANDICAP EXPLAINED

All boats at RYCV have a performance handicap. By definition, this performance handicap indicates the performance of each boat in the Club relative to other boats in the Club.

Do not confuse a measurement rating (such as AMS or IRC) with a performance handicap. Ratings are calculated from measurements of the boats hull, rig and sails, and once calculated will not change unless changes are made to the boat. A boat’s performance handicap will probably change after each race.

Performance handicaps are generated and recalculated in accordance with the Performance Handicap Rules.   A copy of these Rules are available  here .

Since September 2014, Royals has been using a software package called TopYacht. This has replaced the system we have used for many years, namely PAT. TopYacht calculates the results of each race and also recalculates the handicap for each boat for the next race.

When a boat enters a Club race, it will be allocated a performance handicap for that race, called its Allocated Handicap (AH). This AH will be taken from the TopYacht database (or will be supplied by the Club Handicapper).

This performance handicap is a single figure Time Correction Factor (TCF) and is used to convert a boat’s elapsed race time to a corrected time. Thus, if a boat takes 100 minutes to complete the race and its Performance Handicap (or TCF) was 0.75 the its corrected time (CT) will be 75 minutes (100 x 0.75).

The boat with the lowest corrected time (CT) is the race winner.

After each Club race the TopYacht programme will calculate data for each boat, namely:

  • The corrected time (the boat with the lowest CT being the winner).
  • The back calculated handicap (BHC). This is the handicap that each boat actually achieved in the race. Boats in the top half of the results list will have BCH values above their AH and boats at the bottom half below their AH.
  • The Calculated Handicap (CHC) for each boat. This is the handicap for each boat in its next race.

The CHC is calculated as follows:

      CHC = (2 x AH + BCH)/3 For example if the AH was 0.800 and the BCH was 0.815, then       CHC= (0.8 x 2 + 0.815) = 805

However if you read the YV Handicap Rules, you will note terms such as LBCH, LBCHU, LBCHL and LBCHD. We call these Clamped Handicaps, namely:

The YV Rules have recognised that on some occasions other factors come into race results. There could be a drop in wind soon after part of the fleet finishes or same boats could have a problem on the water but choose to finish. Accordingly we use “clamps”. Clamps limit the change of the Back Calculated Handicap (BCH) and produce a Limited Back Calculated Handicap (LBCH).

Currently the clamps are 4% on handicaps and 8% on a discard. Accordingly, if the BCH is greater than 104% or between 96% and 92% the BCH is limited to 104% and 96% respectively (clamping the BCH to 4%). However if the BCH is less than 92% of the AH then the result is discarded for handicap recalculation purposes and the CHC remains unchanged.

On a historical note, performance handicap calculations have changed over the years. In the 1960’s boats that came first, second or third had their handicap increased by a fixed %. This later changed to recording the boat’s last 8 BCHs, discarding the best and two worst results and averaging the remaining 5. The change to the current method (as described above) has been relatively recent.

The current recalculation method is more immediately responsive to changes in the boat’s performance and requires fewer results for a boat to have a valid handicap.

If you have any questions, please contact John Duffin who can usually answer them. The Performance Handicap System has been operating in its current form for about 60 years. It is not perfect, if it were we would have all boats tied for first place each race!

The Victoria One Design is a simple, affordable, ARF sailboat manufactured by the Thunder Tiger Model Company, and distributed world wide. The kit’s low cost (about $150 for the kit, perhaps $400 – $500 nicely outfitted), ease of assembly, and good sailing characteristics make it a great first yacht, while remaining fun to sail and race for old hands as well. The emphasis of the Victoria is on SIMPLICITY and FUN, and to these ends check out the Victoria Resource Center for the latest building, tuning, and sailing tips, along with other interesting and useful information about the boat.

The boat itself is made of heavy duty PVC-type plastic, and is quite durable, capable of surviving virtually any mishap or collision. The kit also includes high quality aluminum spars, sails, and all necessary fittings. All you need to do is add a two-channel radio and you’re ready to sail. Construction is generally a weekend project. The ease of assembly also makes the Victoria a great “club” boat, as new skippers can buy a boat and join the racing with a minimum of trouble and expense.
