North america, the mediterranean, the caribbean, south america, client testimonials.

Very rarely do I get to have such phenomenal experience with anyone in the boating industry… But the experience with Paul–Cross Chartering Yacht Transport was nothing short of spectacular. The timing, the care, the professionalism…. Makes me wanna buy another yacht just so I can ship it with him haha. Feel free to send people my contact info for referrals. A++++ all the way <3

The team at Cross Chartering Yacht Transport safely and efficiently moved 96′ S/Y Symmetry from St. Thomas to La Paz. This was our second voyage with Paul Haber and his group. Even our grumpy captain was happy, that rarely occurs!

Initially, I received 3 shipping quotes; Paul’s was a good amount cheaper so I was skeptical but man was the experience incredible!!! The attention to detail was beyond professional. Unlike other shipping companies that book you and then you only hear from them twice (loading day & delivery day). Paul has an entire team that was in-touch with me almost daily. He treats your boats like his own and I will never use or recommend anyone but Paul and Cross Chartering!

Are you dreaming of taking your boat on a global adventure.

This article was provided by Atlantic Project Cargo .

Shipping your yacht or boat overseas may seem daunting, but fear not! We’re here to guide you through every step of the process. This comprehensive manual is your go-to resource for safe and efficient international boat shipping.

Whether you own a magnificent luxury yacht or a compact recreational boat, understanding the necessary steps and preparation is crucial. We’ve simplified the complexities, providing you with the knowledge and skills to navigate the world of boat shipping confidently.

So, get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey, armed with the tools to make your international yacht and boat shipping experience smooth and successful. Let’s set sail together!

Challenges of Transporting Yachts Overseas

transport of yacht

When shipping yachts overseas, there are several challenges to consider. These include navigating complex customs regulations, ensuring proper handling and securing of your vessel, and selecting a reliable freight forwarder to oversee the process.

To overcome these hurdles, having a well-thought-out plan and partnering with an experienced and reputable service provider is crucial. Understanding the challenges and taking proactive measures can ensure seamless and successful overseas transportation for your cherished yacht.

Exploring Boat Shipping Methods

Various international yacht shipping methods are available, each suited for different types of vessels and specific routes.

These are the main methods:

Container Shipping

Container shipping involves placing the boat or yacht inside a shipping container for transportation. This method offers protection from the elements and allows for secure handling throughout the journey. It is suitable for smaller boats and yachts quickly loaded and secured within a standard container.

Atlantic Project Cargo ensures the container is adequately prepared, secured, and loaded onto the shipping vessel to prevent any damage during transit. Our experienced team handles all the necessary logistics and documentation to ensure a smooth container shipping process.

RoRo (Roll-On/Roll-Off) Shipping

Roll-on/roll-off ( RoRo) shipping is a renowned method for transporting boats and yachts. With this method, the vessel is driven or towed onto a specialized RoRo vessel using ramps. Once the vessel is secure for transportation, it can unload at the destination port by rolling it off the same ramps used for loading. This process ensures a safe and efficient vessel transfer to its intended location.

This method is particularly suitable for larger boats and yachts that are self-propelled or have their own means of transportation. It offers convenience, efficiency, and the ability to load and unload the vessel quickly.

Atlantic Project Cargo works closely with reputable RoRo shipping providers to ensure the safe and secure transportation of your boat or yacht using this method.

Lift-On/Lift-Off (LoLo) Shipping

Lift-on/lift-off (LoLo) shipping involves cranes or specialized lifting equipment to load and unload boats and yachts onto and off the shipping vessel. Due to their size or configuration, this method is used for larger vessels that cannot transport using RoRo or container shipping methods.

Atlantic Project Cargo coordinates the entire lift-on/lift-off process, ensuring the safe handling of your boat or yacht. We work with experienced operators and utilize suitable equipment to minimize the risk of damage during the loading and unloading operations.

Berth-to-Berth Shipping

Berth-to-berth shipping covers the entire transportation process, from the departure to the final destination port. It includes all the necessary logistics, such as loading, securing, transportation, unloading, and delivering the boat or yacht.

Atlantic Project Cargo manages every aspect of the berth-to-berth shipping process, providing a turn-key solution for your international boat or yacht transportation needs. Our team ensures that your vessel is handled with great care and attention to detail, guaranteeing a smooth and worry-free shipping experience.

These methods offer flexibility and options for transporting yachts and boats internationally.

Preparing Your Yacht for Transport

transport of yacht

Preparing your yacht or boat for transport is crucial to ensure safety during international shipping or moving oversized cargo.

Follow these steps to prepare your vessel effectively:

  • Documentation and Registration: Ensure all necessary documents, ownership papers, registration, and insurance are in order, complying with international regulations.
  • Maintenance and Inspection: Inspect your yacht or boat for mechanical issues or damages. Conduct routine maintenance and ensure all systems are working properly.
  • Secure Loose Items: Remove all personal items and secure any remaining equipment to prevent damage during transit.
  • Fuel and Fluids: Maintain minimal fuel and fluid levels on board to comply with safety regulations.
  • Winterization (if applicable): Take necessary steps to winterize the vessel, protecting water systems and engines from freezing temperatures.

Proper preparation is vital for a seamless shipping experience and for safeguarding your yacht or boat.

Measuring Your Yacht

Accurate measurements of your yacht are vital for determining the most suitable shipping method and calculating transportation costs.

Key measures include your vessel’s length, height, width, and weight. It is recommended to consult with a professional surveyor or your chosen freight forwarder to obtain precise measurements.

Understanding the Estimate Calculation

When seeking quotes from freight forwarders, understanding how the estimate is calculated is essential.

Global boat shipping costs depend on the following:

  • Boat’s size
  • Chosen shipping method
  • Distance between ports
  • Customization needs
  • Insurance coverage

Requesting a quote from a reputable yacht shipping service provider ensures an accurate estimate tailored to your requirements. You can obtain a reliable estimate by providing accurate information and discussing your needs with the freight forwarder.

Additional Services to Consider

When selecting a freight forwarder for yacht shipping, one crucial service to consider is insurance coverage. It is essential to inquire about comprehensive insurance options tailored to yacht shipping.

Adequate insurance coverage will protect your valuable asset throughout the transportation process, providing peace of mind. Partnering with a freight forwarder that offers reliable insurance options ensures that your yacht is safeguarded against unforeseen events during its journey.

Yacht Preparation Checklist

transport of yacht

Preparing your yacht for shipping involves a series of necessary steps.

Some essential items to include in your checklist are:

  • Removing personal belongings
  • Securing loose items and covering delicate surfaces
  • Draining fuel and water tanks
  • Documenting the vessel’s condition through photographs
  • Notifying your insurance provider about the upcoming transportation

International Yacht Shipping

When transporting your yacht internationally, it’s crucial to comply with customs regulations and documentation requirements. Your freight forwarder should have expertise in international yacht shipping and guide you through the necessary paperwork, customs clearance, and country-specific regulations. Their experience and knowledge will ensure a smooth transit across borders.

Choosing the Right Freight Forwarder

Selecting the right freight forwarder is pivotal to the success of your yacht transportation. Consider factors such as their experience in yacht shipping, industry reputation, customer reviews, and the range of services they offer.

Atlantic Project Cargo is a renowned freight forwarder specializing in boat export and international yacht shipping. With their extensive expertise, commitment to customer satisfaction, and tailored insurance options, Atlantic Project Cargo is a trusted partner for hassle-free yacht transportation.

Embark on Your Yacht Shipping Adventure!

Transporting your beloved yacht overseas can be a manageable task. You can easily navigate the seas of yacht transportation by understanding the various shipping methods, preparing your yacht meticulously, and partnering with a reliable freight forwarder. Bon voyage!

Flagship Boat Transport | Prepare Before Your Yacht Transport

Getting ready for your yacht transport.

The safety of everyone on the road and your yacht must be yacht transporters’ first consideration. The word Yacht is a term used to describe a large or oversize boat. When we hear the word “Yacht”, it brings to mind images of a very large boat.

Some are fit for a king, others are working vessels like sport fishers, and some are just for family fun. In our world of yacht transportation , the word generally describes a boat that is larger than 14 feet wide, 14 feet tall and is around or over 40,000 pounds in weight.

Our Yacht shipping specialists are very knowledgeable and have years of experience in the planning of moving oversize boats. We have transported boats all across the country and around the world. We have moved vessels of all sizes, shapes, makes and models. Some of the brands of boats we have moved are Carver, Mainship, SeaRay, Silverton, Nordic Tug, Ocean Alexander, Hunter, Catalina, Beneteau, Swan, and Oyster just to name a few.

Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have, or for a free quote on your upcoming Yacht Transportation needs.

Our Boat Relocation Specialists Handle All The Planning For You

transport of yacht

We do not charge a fuel surcharge. We feel fuel surcharges are for companies that do not manage their trucks properly or know how to quote a boat relocation correctly.

There are times when a state will put additional restrictions on their permits. These are usually due to road construction and/or the time of year move is scheduled for. Because we are not aware of this ahead of time, they may not be included in your quote.  You will find a quick overview of the most common rules and regulations, listed by state, in the menu found on the right of this page.

Moving An Oversize Power Or Sailboat Requires Extra Planning and Compliance

When transporting sailboats and powerboats that are oversize, some of the regulations we have to comply with are greater than when moving a smaller vessel. We are always required to use pilot cars and pole cars when the vessel exceeds the state or city size regulations.

There is also the need to meet any curfews that are given to us, as far as when and where we can travel while transporting an oversize Yacht. These additional requirements are set by the states and cities that are issuing the permits, your yacht transportation company must be aware of this.

Over-height Yacht Transport

transport of yacht

Some flybridges are removed due to excessive height and must be transported on the boat, on the transport trailer, and in some cases with a second truck and trailer. We hope this page has been helpful to you.

There is so much more to moving an oversize boat than just loading her up and hitting the road. We invite you to contact us directly with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your Yacht transportation service needs. We want to be your Yacht Transport Company and are always happy to help. Let us give you a free quote today!

International yacht shipping requires more time and knowledge of international shipping . Yachts must be properly prepped and height needs to be reduced in many cases. A yacht transport company needs to assist with all aspects of moving your yacht. A flexible shipping schedule will aid your yacht transport service in getting you the best price.

Yacht Transport to Any Destination in the World

Brooks Yacht Transport offers worldwide all-included ocean transport for yachts. We are the gold standard of yacht transport companies and maintain this reputation through meticulous attention to detail and thorough communication. We offer fully-insured bespoke yacht transport solutions for every customer, and pride ourselves on customer service that is unparalleled in the yacht transport industry.

Why Brooks Yacht Transport Is Different

We see these as our main competitive differentiators in the Yacht Transport Industry.

WE ONLY SHIP YACHTS

Moving a yacht is not like moving other cargo. We are NOT a general cargo shipping company, we are yacht and boat specialists and we will know how to properly prepare your boat for safe transport.

VIP CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

We are a customer service company FIRST and a transport company second. We love working with superyachts and megayachts, but unlike other companies, we give as much attention to any boat, regardless of the size.

WE SERVICE ALL SHIPPING ROUTES

We are able to utilize any ship out there; we aren’t limited to only providing you with the sailing dates of our own ships like many other larger yacht transporters in the market.

Detailed Process: Yacht Transport by Ocean

Tell us about your boat & route, we do the research, contract is signed, your yacht is transported, ocean yacht transport: frequently asked questions, what are advantages of transporting my yacht via ocean liner versus having a captain & crew deliver my yacht.

There are many good reasons to transport a yacht by liner rather than hiring a captain.

First and foremost, transporting your boat means sparing it from significant wear and tear, engine hours, and the possibility of interior or exterior damage or engine malfunction.

Another reason to have your yacht shipped to its destination instead of motored is the cost of fuel. Depending on the type of boat, the cost of fuel consumption on a long distance delivery will come very close to the cost of transport by ocean liner.

We make the process stress free. You never worry about your boat running aground or experiencing other structural or mechanical failure that could delay your yacht reaching its destination by months, and costing you indefinite sums for repair.

Even though with yacht transport by liner there’s no absolutely guaranteed date of arrival, you do know that you won’t run into an unexpected long-term maintenance or repair scenario between your origin and destination.

With ocean yacht transport by liner, you also have complete certainty of liability – every time you transport your boat with us you have a full-coverage all-risk marine cargo insurance policy

Why don’t we know exact dates for loading & delivery of my boat?

Sadly, guaranteed pick-up dates don’t exist in ocean transport – regardless of the shipper or transporter. In fact, if an ocean yacht transporter is giving you a guaranteed pick-up date well in advance of shipping, this is not trustworthy information and very much a red flag.

It’s impossible to know exactly what day the ship is going to arrive at the port because of the possibility of whether delays, port congestion, or delays at prior ports. Once the ship has reached port, we will have a much more accurate idea of your delivery date, but because of the many uncontrollable factors in the international shipping industry at large, we have to use our best judgment and err on the side of caution in providing you with estimated dates.

If we are a month or more away of shipping, you can expect a loading window of approximately 15 days. That window narrows as the ship gets closer & clears each port on its schedule before your port of loading.

How will my boat be prepared for ocean transport?

Initial preparations may take place before your boat gets to port. Perhaps your boat was shrinkwrapped at your marina or boatyard. Perhaps you had a custom cradle built for your boat in advance etc. These preparations depend on the type of boat and your preference.

Next, there are a few different options for how your boat can get to port for loading. We can deliver your boat by truck if it’s of road legal size. Otherwise, you or a designated friend or professionally hired captain can bring your boat to port for loading.

Once your yacht has reached the port, final preparations are made prior to shipping. The cradle might be built on the deck of the ship custom-fit to your boat, your boat may be lashed and strapped securely to the deck of the ship. Experienced certified loadmasters, experienced certified cradle builders, or experienced certified divers may all be involved in the final preparations of your boat.

Your boat will be loaded onto the liner either with a heavy-duty crane that is geared to the deck of the ship, or it may be loaded by other means such as mobile port crane, or by roll on – roll off if that’s your method of shipment (see below our detailed guide on loading methods). We will know which loading method is appropriate for your yacht. Please give us a call if you have any questions or concerns!

Do you own the ship that will be transporting my yacht?

We do not own ocean liners. For your yacht transport, there is no advantage whatsoever to using a company that owns their own ships. Most ship-owning companies are actually more expensive because they have greater overhead, and the customer service that you receive will be inferior. All NVOCC companies (like us) have access to the same ships on the same tradelines.

Please give us a call and ask us if you have additional questions about Ocean Yacht Transport. We are here 7 days a week and would love to hear from you!

Boat being Prepared for Yacht Transport by Ocean

Yacht Loading Methods

Below we describe the various ways of loading your yacht onto an ocean liner

Lift-On/Lift-Off

Roll-on/roll-off, float-on/float-off.

The Lift On – Lift Off transport method is the most common in the industry. It is straightforward, safe and most cost-effective in many cases. If our team determines that Lift-On, Lift-Off is best for your transport, your yacht will need to be brought shipside, by sea or by truck. Heavy-duty slings are carefully placed under the hull of your boat by professional divers at the instruction of an experienced loadmaster. The loadmaster will have determined the correct lifting points for your hull in advance. At this point, your yacht is slowly and delicately crane-lifted out of the water or truck-bed, and placed on top of a custom built arrangement of lumber and steel stands that cradle the vessel onboard. These cranes are often rated for hundreds of tons of load capacity and can lift your yacht like a feather. Your boat is securely lashed down to the deck and cradle, and the process is simply reversed at your port of destination.

transport of yacht

Flatrack shipping is very useful for boats that are shorter than 40 feet, do not exceed height restrictions (which vary by route and ship), and need to be transported along less common routes and schedules. Flatracks are essentially standard 40’ shipping containers without sidewalls and a roof. This allows your yacht’s dimensions to go beyond the parameters of standard shipping containers, but with the same ease of loading. Because of the container-like design, these platforms are available for use on most major shipping lines worldwide, year-round, and at a relatively low cost. Custom-built cradling is provided if necessary.

Flat Rack Yacht Transport for Ocean Liner

The Roll-On/Roll-Off transport method is a very attractive shipping option if your yacht is less than 60 feet in length, and less than 15-18 feet in height. In this method, your yacht is wheeled on board the stern ramp of a ship that is specially designed for rolling cargo. Your yacht can be rolled onto the ship on its own trailer, or on top of a specialized rolling flatbed and cradle. Roll-On/Roll-Off is a fantastic method of transport because of the weather protection provided by the boat being enclosed within the ship, the frequency of the ship schedules, and the fact it’s generally the most cost-effective method of transport if possible for your yacht!

Roll on Roll off Yacht Transportation Example

The Break Bulk (otherwise known as Out-of-Gauge) transport method is utilized when a yacht must be shipped on board a container or “break bulk” liner vessel due to route or season, but the yacht’s dimensions make standard container or Flatrack loading impossible. In this case, your yacht is lifted by the same means as the Lift-On/Lift-Off method onto a platform between rows of containers for safety, or directly onto the deck of the ship in its own custom-built steel cradle.

The Float-On/Float-Off yacht transport method is done with the use of semi-submersible vessels. These ships are engineering marvels that were originally designed to transport and launch oil rigs, but have since been utilized to transport a variety of cargo that is simply too large or heavy to be safely lifted by cranes, and must be floated over the submerged deck of these very special ships. Due to the fascinating coverage of many of these operations, our customers will often ask if this method would be best for their yacht. This method is great for megayachts that cannot be lifted safely, but this transport method is actually not necessary for most yachts. Most yachts, including many superyachts, can be safely lifted on a traditional cargo vessel at a lesser cost. There are, however, some instances where this transport method is cost effective and convenient, in which case we are happy to offer it as one of our many options!

For yacht transports that can be done by land, we offer yacht trucking. This ranges from tri-axle bunk trailers to specialized lowboy boat haulers for oversized boats with high clearance. Trucking is often required for domestic yacht transport, due to The Jones Act (Merchant Marine Act of 1920), which prohibits ocean freight to be delivered between U.S. ports if the ship is not U.S. built, U.S. flag, and fully crewed and supported by U.S. labor. We offer road transport of any distance, ranging from local moves, to cross-country, to international. We have thoroughly vetted, experienced drivers positioned in the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Europe. Can my yacht be moved by truck ?

Transport a Sailboat - Costs & How To Ship

Transport a Sailboat: Costs & How To Guide | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

June 15, 2022

Sailboat transport is an essential and very well-established boating service with numerous options.

Sailboats can be transported by single-axle trailers, multi-axle trailers, cargo ships, and occasionally trains. Sailboats can also be transported across an ocean on their own with the help of a hired captain and crew. Costs vary widely based on size and type, and they range from $200 to more than $15,000.

In this article, we’ll cover several of the most common sailboat transportation methods. We’ll cover the details and requirements of each method, along with the required method by sailboat size and type. Additionally, we’ll explore the average costs of each method for a typical production cruising sailboat.

We sourced the information used in this article from sailboat transport agencies along with government towing and transportation guides. We carefully researched pricing to help you get a basic idea of what it’ll cost to transport a sailboat.

Table of contents

‍ Is Transporting a Sailboat Difficult?

It’s not necessarily difficult to transport a sailboat, but it does require care and careful planning. Your responsibilities as the sailboat owner range from trailer maintenance and careful driving to the organization of international logistics. In this article, we’ll discuss ways to streamline the process and make it easier.

Is Sailboat Transport Expensive?

Sailboat transport can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Obviously, moving a small sailboat is relatively cheap in comparison, especially if you already have a truck and a trailer.

The cost of transporting a larger boat is higher, as you’ll probably need to hire a shipping company or a crew.

There are multiple ways to transport a large sailboat, and the more economical method isn’t always immediately evident. Some boats may be cheaper to ship on a specially-designed yacht carrying vessel, while others may be cheaper if you hire a delivery crew.

Pricing varies between boats, locations, and destinations, so it’s essential to research all available methods and request multiple quotes. If you do, you could save thousands on transport and delivery, not to mention insurance costs to protect your vessel from possible damage.

Sailboat Transport Methods

There are several ways to transport a sailboat, and the ideal method depends upon the size and dry weight of the vessel. Dry weight is distinct from displacement, so it’s important to ensure that you have the correct number. Here are the most common ways to transport sailboats short and long distances.

Self Towing

Some sailboats can be towed, though the vehicle, trailer type, and license requirements vary based on size. The smallest and lightest dinghies and pocket cruisers can be towed by most typical cars, provided you have a heavy-duty tow hitch installed.

Larger sailboats, in the 20-foot range and longer, usually need to be towed by a pickup truck or SUV. A half-ton gasoline pickup truck is sufficient for lighter vessels, as long as the dry weight doesn’t exceed the vehicle’s towing capacity.

Also, remember that some automakers determine towing capacity under ideal test conditions, so your truck’s actual towing ability may be slightly lower than its rating.

You’ll have to collapse or remove the mast, boom, and standing rigging of the sailboat and secure it, regardless of its size.

Most trailer sailers can be towed by half-ton or 3/4 ton single rear wheel trucks. Larger sailboats, such as towable coastal cruisers, may require a multi-axle trailer and a gooseneck. This setup is often found with a dually 3/4 ton or 1-ton truck.

The Basics of Towing Rules in the United States

The rules of the road are clear when it comes to towing. With a Class C license (a standard driver’s license), the maximum overall trailer length you can tow is 60 feet. The maximum length of a Class C trailer surface is 53 feet.

Length usually isn’t the issue when it comes to towing sailboats. The maximum width of a class C trailer is 8 ft 6 in, which includes the items on the trailer. The regulations mean that the beam of your boat can’t exceed about 8 feet, give or take a couple of inches.

With a more advanced license or a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), you can tow a much larger trailer and drive a semi-truck. Some larger sailboats with greater beam width can be towed this way, though only if they remain below the maximum height.

Height requirements for trailers vary between 13 ft, 6 inches to 14 ft, depending on the location. This is measured from the ground to the top of the item on the trailer.

Be sure to plan your route carefully if you’re towing a boat with a full keel, as some older overpasses and railroad bridges are much shorter than 13 feet.

Professional Towing Services

It’s usually best to leave the towing to professionals, especially if you’re towing a large boat. Experienced drivers with big rigs and commercial licenses can transport surprisingly large vessels safely but at a cost. The benefit of using a professional service is that you’re taking the risk off your shoulders.

Many professional towing services offer insurance, which is essential. Insurance protects the loading and unloading of the boat and covers any damages that occur en route. For the price, it’s a no-brainer.

In most cases, the tow company will not be able to help you launch your boat. You’re responsible for arranging boat crane services at your destination. It’s best to plan carefully, as you may end up paying more if you make the driver wait too long.

Cost of Professional Sailboat Towing Services

Cost varies widely based on the company, location, and size of the load. Most towing companies have a base fee, a fee of the assessed load, and then a per-mile charge. Some companies have different fee structures.

Companies that offer quotes usually predict a charge of between $500 and $1,000 for typical trips, though it can cost as little as $300 if you have a relatively small boat and it only needs to travel a short distance.

Shipping a Sailboat on a Cargo Ship

Large and small sailboats are frequently sent across oceans via cargo ships. This method is time-tested and relatively cost-effective, though it’s not as straightforward as just sailing the boat across.

Some people hire an agent to arrange shipping, which is the easiest and most reliable way to have a headache-free experience.

Shipping a sailboat by sea is slower than over-the-road transport, and schedules are less flexible. Often, you’ll have to wait for a spot to open up on a specifically-designed yacht carrying ship.

Once the ships are loaded, they set out at predetermined times that might be months ahead of when you booked. The best way to ensure you get a spot on a yacht shipping vessel is to plan well in advance of when you actually need to transport the vessel.

Logistics are the greatest challenge of shipping a boat on a larger ship. If you don’t work with an agent or an accommodating shipping company, you could have to work out the following and more:

  • Transportation to the shipping yard
  • Loading and securing instructions
  • Shipping destination
  • Payments to various services
  • Customs in the destination country (if outside of the U.S.)
  • Taxes and import fees
  • Declarations
  • Inspections
  • Unloading at the destination
  • Transportation from the destination port to the marina

As you can see, there are lots of reasons to hire a professional to manage the minutiae of shipping a sailboat. The last thing you want is to have your boat seized at customs or have it dropped off in an unguarded yard in the wrong location.

Cost to Ship a Sailboat on a Cargo Ship

Shipping costs for ocean-going boat transport are lower than many people expect. A lot of factors are involved, including the size of the boat, its height (from keel to mast top), its displacement, and the distance it needs to be shipped.

The lowest prices you’ll find to ship an average-sized boat are around $3,000 to $5,000. A more typical estimate for an average sailboat is between $6,000 and $10,000. Some vessels and destinations cost upwards of $15,000. Costs tend to increase with the size and distance, and the value of your sailboat also plays a part.

Prices in the yacht shipping industry are competitive, which is why it’s relatively affordable to ship a boat over an ocean. It’s surprisingly popular as well, and there are more than a dozen shipping companies offering long-distance ocean transport specifically for yachts of various sizes.

Hired Delivery

Hired crews for boat delivery is the other way to transport a sailboat over the water. Crew services find a captain and a small professional crew to sail your boat for you.

This is a great option for large boats, as it’s often less expensive and time-consuming than shipping it on a larger vessel.

Hired crew delivery services are offered by companies and experienced individuals. You can even find a trusted friend to crew your boat for you, and they can hire a crew member or two to accompany them for the journey.

While under hire, the crew will be living in your boat. Crew members come from all backgrounds, and many sailors spend a summer or two working for a charter service to make some money or get free transportation to other countries.

Cost to Hire a Delivery Crew

Hired crew delivery costs vary, though the more hands you need, the more it costs. Crews and captains usually charge daily rates for yacht delivery services. A fast sailboat is almost always cheaper to transport than a slow sailboat.

As an example, we’ll use the services of Captain James Lowe , who is a USCG licensed 200-ton Master. As of the writing of this article, Captain James Lowe charges between $350 and $425 per day for his services, depending on the size of the vessel. Deckhands cost $175 per day per person, which is in addition to the Captain’s charges.

These are the base rates, and they’re a good representation of what professional crewed delivery costs. You may find cheaper rates with other groups or individuals, but it’s worth the cost if you want a trustworthy and experienced crew.

Additional charges often include transportation costs (to and from the destinations), fuel costs (for heating, cooking, and motoring), and a deposit is usually required for fuel. These costs are impossible to predict without knowing your specific plans, so it’s best to reach out to Captain James Lowe for a specialized quote.

Hired crew delivery services usually have a minimum crew requirement for different boat sizes and types. In this case, sailboats require a minimum of one deckhand in addition to a captain. Larger sailing vessels of 65 feet or greater require two or more additional deckhands.

Our heritage

DYT, formerly known as DOCKWISE YACHT TRANSPORT was founded in 1987. The first sailing was under the name of Wijsmuller, a shipping company that specialized in heavy, off shore bulk transport and tugboats. During the oil crisis of the 80’s, Wijsmuller was forced to find innovative new markets for a strong decline in bulk transport. Modern yacht transport as we know it was discovered.

In 1987 the first yacht carrier, Super Servant 6 was launched. With a few technical adjustments this submersible yacht carrier was equipped with side walls made with railway sleepers. These walls allowed for the necessary protection and safety needed to shelter the yachts during transport. The company, led by Jeff and Gina Last, who with their personal touch and creative approach, developed the idea of an on-time transport schedule and took the company to the unique position as the preferred yacht transport provided worldwide.

Today, the foundation for this unique and safe method of shipping dedicated to the transport of yachts can be seen in the modern 658 feet YACHT EXPRESS with her high rising side walls. And after years of preparations, in January 2022, DYT announced the delivery of the purpose-built semi-submersible vessel, YACHT SERVANT. The Yacht Servant boasts an impressive 6,300 square meters of deck space, and measures 214.17 meters (702,66 feet) in length and 46 meters across the beam, with a draft of 4.6 meters. Additionally, it has a specialized deck located behind the bridge, specifically designed to accommodate tenders, containers, and small race boats.

DYT Yacht Transport’s mission is to serve the global yachting community with safe, reliable, and on-time Superyacht transport to the most sought after destinations in the world. True to our beginnings in 1987, whether it’s the South of France or the hottest sport fishing destinations in the Pacific, DYT is looking to broaden the horizon of yacht transport.

This Bonkers 656-Foot ‘AirYacht’ Concept Can Transport 40 Guests Around the World

The 656-foot-long AirYacht is moving closer to reality, but its latest iteration might force the designers to change its name. Instead of a two-part structure that includes a 197-foot superyacht that releases from the upper blimp portion, the latest version will have a nondetachable lounge to increase its weight capacity and accommodate more passengers.

The AirYacht will now stay exclusively in the air, says CEO Guillaume Hoddé, who cofounded the Swiss company with fellow engineer Matthieu Ozanne. Jettisoning the boat allows more flexibility to accommodate larger groups and weight capacity, with the ability to make longer cruising trips to enhance the experience . “We founded the company with a dream of living in the air,” Hoddé told Robb Report . “At 500 feet, you can see, feel, and smell the environment with almost limitless accessibility. That is different from any other mode of travel.”

The redesigned lounge will have about 8,600 square feet of livable space that can accommodate 10 to 40 guests, depending on the configuration. The company is looking to sell its airships to different operators around the world, who can then specify the interior layouts.

The company has fabricated prototypes for many subsystems, says Hoddé, with the first full-scale prototype serving as the first airship. He declined to specify when the full-scale version would be ready, but initial flight tests are planned for 2026, and after modifications, it should be commercially available two years later. It will be operated with hybrid propulsion (with the goal of running on emissions-free hydrogen power by 2030) capable of a maximum altitude of about 10,000 feet, with the capacity to remain fixed in one place so guests can enjoy prolonged views of specific areas. It is designed to remain autonomous for a week but a top speed of 50 knots means it can cover long distances.

Hoddé envisions the AirYacht cruising above all types of terrain, from polar regions to African savannahs to beautiful, verdant areas of France. “Imagine taking off from Geneva, doing aerial sightseeing over Lake Annecy, and Montblanc Valley in the French Alps, and then flying over 22 castles along the Loire,” says Hoddé.

AirYacht’s newly designed elevator allows 12 passengers to disembark at a time, so the airship can do scheduled events while afloat. The open design of the interior is intended to promote social interaction between guests, with dining areas, two bars, and multiple spots to take in aerial views. But guests will also have privacy in the spacious ensuite bedrooms. The ship is designed to accommodate a 12-person crew and three pilots.

The AirYacht (not to be confused with Lazzarini’s bonkers flying superyacht concept of the same name) is not without competitors. Airlander 10 airships from Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) are also designed for the tourism market. The U.K. company expects the airship to be certified in 2026. It will be able to carry approximately 130 people and cruise between 50 and 70 knots. It also has a luxury configuration with large suites and fewer guests.

Israel-based Atlas LTA Advanced Technology is also touting its long-range Atlant 30, which accommodates 20 passengers across 10 suites. Its design team says it will be ready to fly in 2026.

Google cofounder Sergey Brin’s LTA (Lighter Than Air) Research outfit is also moving ahead with its Pathfinder airships, though it’s not clear if it will have passenger-carrying capacities.

“Pathfinder is a case where someone is willing to take a risk and has all the necessary capital,” says Brandon Buerge, an associate professor with the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Wichita State University and veteran of three airship programs. If Pathfinder is successful, Buerge told Robb Report , it could mean sizable investments in the sector for applications such as cargo and regional travel.

Underwater superyachts? A CEO is pitching fantastical ships that can go 800 feet down and stay submerged for weeks

  • Austria's Migaloo is offering to build a private "submersible superyacht" for the ultrarich.
  • It says the M5 would be able to travel 820 feet underwater and stay submerged for a month.
  • Despite the high up-front cost, CEO Christian Gumpold says the firm is in talks with buyers.

Insider Today

Forget megayachts. Forget billionaire basements. If you're unfathomably rich and want a new toy, there's an Austrian company that says it will build you a fully submersible yacht.

And this is no rickety Titan submersible .

The Migaloo M5 concept, the company says, involves a 540-foot base-model superyacht that would travel about 820 feet underwater and stay down there for up to a month.

"The needs of superyacht owners for their vessels are more complex than ever," Migaloo CEO Christian Gumpold told Business Insider, adding: "These wishes do not just include performance, length, or design."

Gumpold said that yacht owners were "looking for privacy, security, and protection for themselves, their guests and their valuables, or for the fulfillment of unique experiences up to scientific desires, as well as for the greatest possible exclusivity."

According to its marketing materials, Migaloo says the vessel's layout and features could be designed around any customer priority, whether that's security, thrill seeking, research, or simply vacation.

The company offers prospective buyers a checklist of options, including LED exterior lighting with a laser show, a helipad, a hot-air balloon, and — for the aspiring Bond villain — an underwater shark-feeding station.

The vessel could feasibly host a wealth of supplemental vehicles, including mini submarines, exploration vehicles, and working boats, it said.

Although at times it's described in the company marketing materials as a "private submersible superyacht" the M5 would technically be able to sail as a submarine — an underwater vessel that can launch itself and return under its own power, rather than having to be launched by a mother ship.

It's envisioned as being able to house up to 20 guests and about 40 staffers.

The Migaloo concept aims to satisfy an increasing desire for privacy and security among the world's richest people.

Related stories

The most expensive megayachts ever sold now run into the half-billion-dollar range or more, with at least three $600 million yachts afloat, owned by various oligarchs and oil-state royalty.

Bobbing about underwater in a Migaloo M5, Elon Musk wouldn't have to worry about a jet-tracking student any longer.

Gumpold told BI he had specialized in yacht design since 2008, and he promised that all the complex arrangements of the Migaloo project — working with shipyards, flag states, and classification societies — would be taken care of by his company.

Much of the marketing material for Migaloo runs to possibilities that sound like science fiction, addressing problems that would either apply only to the ultrarich or which the rest of us would be too dead to care about.

Saying it works with the security company Safe, Migaloo claims it could create a "private submersible fortress," offering protection from electromagnetic pulses, cybercrime, piracy, solar flares, asteroids, and polar shifts.

That's on top of a gamut of features that any megayacht owner might expect, including spas, gyms, a gaming room, a wine cellar, an art gallery, and a panic room.

The cost, however, is the ultimate "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" test.

Gumpold told Fast Company that the price depended on the scope of the client's requests, comparing it to the price tag on large superyachts.

According to Fast Company's estimation, there are only 50 people in the world who could afford to purchase a luxury submergible megayacht.

It remains to be seen if and when any prospective buyers will bite.

Gumpold told BI his company was "still in close contact with several potential owners worldwide" and "very close" to executing the first project steps.

But he didn't elaborate on any concrete steps and wouldn't name any of his prospective clients.

With a turnaround time of about four to seven years, it's also going to be awhile before any of them would take to the seas.

Watch: The search is on for clues in the Titan sub implosion

The new Four Seasons yacht will set sail in 2026.

Four Seasons has long set the gold standard for luxury accommodations on land and is renowned for its exquisite hotels that offer unparalleled comfort and service. Now, this legacy of luxury is extending its reach to the seas. In a groundbreaking move, Four Seasons Yachts , in collaboration with Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings Ltd and the esteemed Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, is introducing an ambitious venture into luxury sea travel. Scheduled to set sail in 2026, this initiative promises an experience that transcends traditional cruising, offering voyages across the mesmerizing waters of the Caribbean and the historic coasts of the Mediterranean.

Alejandro Reynal, President and CEO of Four Seasons, expressed enthusiasm about bringing the brand's hallmark of guest-centered luxury to the high seas. According to Reynal, this expansion into yachting is a natural extension of Four Seasons' commitment to providing personalized, elegant, and comfortable experiences. The aim is clear: to redefine luxury hospitality, but this time, against the backdrop of the world's most stunning seascapes.

The suites are breathtaking.

The inaugural season of Four Seasons Yachts is poised to offer something truly special. With ten unique voyages planned, travelers will have the opportunity to explore over 130 distinct destinations across more than 30 countries and territories. Each itinerary has been meticulously crafted, allowing guests the flexibility to design their own sea adventure. From the lively atmospheres of Caribbean islands like Saint Barthélemy and Martinique to the cultural richness of Mediterranean gems, including the Greek Isles and Croatia, these voyages promise a blend of well-loved destinations and hidden treasures.

Accommodations aboard the yacht are set to be a marvel in themselves. Ninety-five suites, conceived by the creative minds of Fredrik Johannson at Tillberg Design of Sweden and Creative Director Prosper Assouline, are designed to be sanctuaries of tranquility at sea. Each suite, envisioned with elegant interiors, expansive views, and a residential feel, aims to provide guests with a sense of being at home away from home. Among these, the Funnel and Loft Suites stand out for their sheer luxury and space. They offer unique features such as splash pools, outdoor showers, and breathtaking panoramic views, setting a new benchmark for luxury accommodations on water.

The pool deck features a bar and lounge chairs.

Beyond the exquisite suites, the yacht will feature various amenities designed to cater to every guest's needs. With eleven dining options, a comprehensive spa and wellness center, a state-of-the-art marina, and an innovative pool area capable of hosting events, the yacht ensures a variety of experiences that enrich the journey.

“We’re building a stunning seafaring venture that will be enjoyed as a yacht experience rather than a cruise experience," says Thatcher Brown, chief commercial officer and head of joint operations at luxury shipping specialist Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings, the joint owner/operator of the Four Seasons Yachts brand. "The intrinsic value of Four Seasons brand leadership in luxury hospitality combined with the passionate pioneering spirit and expertise of the project team is manifested in the creation of truly special Four Seasons Yachts experiences."
