Swiftsure Yachts

Puffin  is a truly exceptional Robert H Perry designed Tashiba 36. It sounds cliché, but they truly don’t build them like they used to. When Puffin was launched, the Ta Shing boatyard was at the top of their game with high quality materials and truly over the top details. Her interior finish exemplifies the incredible teak joinery characteristic of Ta Shing, with louvered locker doors, laminated door frames and a beautiful salon table. And it’s all in fantastic condition. Large hatches and white laminate overhead and cabin-sides provide a bright contrast to the homey feel of the interior. Her two stateroom, one head layout (with separate shower stall) and a spacious “Perry” galley is ideal for a liveaboard cruising couple.

Interior Accommodations:

Puffin’s interior is beautifully finished in teak, characteristic of the high-quality workmanship produced by the Ta Shing boatyard.

Beginning forward, the master stateroom features a large V-berth with split mattress & access forward to the divided chain locker. There is tremendous storage below and outboard as well as two large hanging lockers to port. A large overhead hatch with screen plus three opening ports provide ventilation in this area.

Next aft to starboard a head with separate shower stall that is far more spacious than boats even much larger. There is a stainless steel vanity sink in a marble countertop, hot/cold pressure water plus a brass manual pump and generous storage. A Dorade vent and opening port provide ventilation in the bathroom area.

Amidships is the very comfortable salon space with straight settee to port & L-shape settee to starboard. To starboard is a gorgeous inlaid teak table on an adjustable bronze pedestal base. The water tank is located below the starboard settee and there is storage under the port settee, starboard settee return, behind seatback and outboard against the hull. The nav station is aft facing at the aft end of the starboard settee. There are four opening ports and the signature teak butterfly hatch with screens that provide light and ventilation for the main cabin area.

The aft stateroom is to starboard adjacent to the companionway. There is a large double berth, generous storage and ventilation from two opening ports a Dorade vent.

Opposite to port is a beautiful seagoing galley with exceptional storage and counter space. There is a massive refrigeration and freezer compartment with top loading access to the freezer and top and front loading access for the fridge. Two opening ports, a Dorade vent and the companionway hatch provide ventilation in the galley area.

The companionway is on centerline with removable steps and box for access to the engine. There is a storage locker behind the companionway steps. The companionway entry has removable louvered teak doors plus a set of teak drop boards.

Bluewater Sailboat – Tashiba 36

The Bluewater Sailboat Tashiba 36, along with its smaller twin, the Tashiba 31, are the last of designer Bob Perry’s full keel double-enders; he considers them his best. Many of the innovations Perry achieved with his Baba 40 design are carried over into this boat, which has characteristics that many sailors appreciate. They’re quick, close-winded, rigid, and balanced.

Ta Shing, the top Taiwanese boatbuilder and one of the best quality yards in the world, built the boats. The interior of the yacht has been regarded as “excellent furniture” by some.

The Tashiba 36’s history is connected with the Baba boat line. According to legend, the name “Tashiba” is a play on words that combines the names “Ta Shing” and “Baba.” These boats were created by developer Bob Berg, who gathered together Perry and discovered the boatyard that would become Taiwan’s best. The three-boat lineup of the Baba 30, 35, and 40 proved popular.

When Ta Shing took over marketing and decided to launch their own brand of yachts, the last of these boats, the Baba 40, was renamed the Tashiba 40. To complete the new Tashiba line, two smaller boats were required.

Perry was the ideal choice for the two new boats that became the Tashiba 36 and Tashiba 31 after designing the complete Baba range of boats. They were created in California in collaboration with Perry and Ta Shing’s Taiwanese representative.

The Baba/Tashiba 40, based on the iconic Valiant 40 performance cruiser, was such a significant advance over Perry’s earlier full-keel designs that he chose to further evolve the design. For added stability, the turn to the bilges became even harder. The bows were more refined. The end result was a Bluewater boat that sailed incredibly well; fast and close enough to challenge many fin keel designs.

The hull of the boat is made of hand-laminated fiberglass. The exterior layers are made of water- and thus osmosis-resistant vinylester resin. The interior of the boat can be coated with polyurethane insulation if desired. Ballast consists of a single iron casting encased in fibreglass.

The deck is made of GRP and has an end-grain balsa core. Marine-plywood coring and stainless steel backing plates are utilized in regions where through-deck fittings are fastened.

The boat was also available with a pilothouse and a regular rear cockpit. Rear cockpit types offer a spacious front stateroom and a quarter berth aft, whereas pilothouse models have two large bedrooms, one ahead and one amidship. In addition to the pedestal steering from the cockpit, the pilothouse incorporates an inside steering station. Both models come with a pressurized hot water system and a shower in the head area.

Quick Notes

The Tashiba 36, like many of Ta Shing’s Baba/Panda/Tashiba boats, features black iron fuel tanks that have proven subject to corrosion. These tanks have been changed in many boats, but it’s worth checking. Prices for the Tashiba 36 have remained relatively high, and there aren’t many on the used market.

FURTHER BROKERS COMMENTS:

JESSIE MARIE has been extensively re-fitted and updated by her seller in recent years and which just adds to her very high-quality original build she enjoyed at the hands of the legendary Ta Shing Shipyard in Taiwan, who have been renowned for building such yachts since the yard was established in 1957. With her hand-laid GRP hull, encapsulated elongated fin keel and adjoining trailing rudder, an easily handled cutter rig combined with the beautiful teak interior joinery, she will surely make for a wonderful sea-kindly comfortable cruising boat. JESSIE MARIE has enjoyed two recent re-fits, one in 2017 and the other in 2018, which are listed below in the seller’s comments. In only her third ownership she is now ready to take her fourth owner on many ocean voyages if required or coastal hopping if that is preferred.

SELLER’S COMMENTS:

“Rarely does a truly spectacular boat come on the market and Jessie Marie is definitely one of those boats. Current owner purchased her in March of 2016 from her second owner to participate to the 2018 Golden Globe circumnavigation race, unfortunately he was afflicted by a lower back condition during the summer 2016 Atlantic crossing that caused him to withdraw from the race.

She spent the first 23 years of her life in Chesapeake Bay as a one owner boat. The second owner, purchased her in 2010, cruised her to the Bahamas and in Florida. The boat reached the current owner in pristine condition, and has significantly improved in his ownership. The boat has no history of osmosis. Has copper clad epoxy finish applied in the 90’s.

She was re-fitted and upgraded in Florida in April of 2016 with an eye to the race, making her a world class blue water boat with systems and backup systems that are essential and engineered beautifully, she is ready to circumnavigate in comfort and safety several times. There are invoices in excess of 60,000 US$ for gear and in excess of 30,000 US$ for labour dated between April and May of 2016, available for inspection.

She underwent a second major refit in 2017, when teak deck was removed and all deck fittings re-bedded on a gelcoat antiskid surface, mast removed stripped and repainted, and the deck plan was redesigned with new and upgraded hardware, all tracks were changed and two new ones added. See below for 2017 re-fit.

The Sail inventory is as varied and as good as possible. The woodwork is done to heirloom standards. Jessie Marie would cost a lot to replace and is very sensibly priced for a new owner that wants to sail oceans, cover miles in safety and comfort. The discerning blue water sailor, looking for a safe, strong, seaworthy, exceptionally fitted and maintained blue water boat should have Jessie Marie. She is the Ideal plug and play boat for a serious cruising couple.”

Winter 2018 refit: • New fuel lifting pump for Yanmar • Rebuilt injection pump on Yanmar • New injectors on Yanmar • New Gas Stove • New Raymarine autopilot computer • New L&S hydraulic autopilot ram • Stripped & repainted all outside varnished surfaces • Installed new Seaview instrument console on pedestal • International Antifouling • New Zinc Anodes

Winter 2017 refit: • Removed teak deck, • new deck gelcoat anti-skid, • re-bedded all deck fittings • White awlgrip paint on mast – 3 coats after sandblasting and priming. • new mainsail Antal track, new Antal Hanks and battens on mainsail. • new Antal ST winches on mast • 2 new Antal secondary winches in cockpit. • New jammers on mast, passed all halyards inside mast, so now we have two at the rear, three at the front + staysail halyard, • new electric wiring in the mast, with protection sock. • New steaming and deck flood lights LED • New LED nav lights • new genoa tracks • New genoa tracks on caprails of bulwarks, • rebuilt steering system • new Frigoboat fridge system – water-cooled • new battery charger 220/110 • new Lofrans tigers windlass, • repainted bowsprit • new spinnaker pole track & cart • 2 carbon spinnaker poles, • new spinnaker sock, • new foam in all interior seats • rebuilt gas cooker

BUILDER’S COMMENTS:

“These were designed by Robert Perry. Tashiba is the first in our line of Ta Shing designed and developed yachts, a line of lovely, traditional cruising sailboats.”

Text taken from Ta Shing’s website TA SHING OVERVIEW:

The Ta Shing Shipyard was established in 1957 with, to quote their website; “Let the owners’ dreams come true.”

Once again, to quote their website; “Ta Shing is an experienced and fully customized boat yacht OEM builder, the boat building experience from Shing-Sheng in 1957 and has constructed more than 1,200 boats. The Models been built include Sailboats: Mason, Tashiba, Taswell, Sky, Mystic, Norseman etc, and now building Nordhavn motoryacht/motorsailer.”

They are renowned for hand crafting using high quality materials such as Burmese teak for much of their yachts’ interiors (the quality of-which is a particular feature of the Taswell brand) to create strong, comfortable and easily managed yachts comparable with brands such as; Najad, Halberg Rassy, Malo and Contest.

PRESS REVIEW: “Overview Introduced in 1986, the Tashiba 36 along with its smaller sibling the Tashiba 31 are the last of the full keel double-enders by designer Bob Perry; he considers them his best. The boat shares many of the innovations Perry made with his Baba 40 design and evolves them further to produce a boat with traits all sailors love. They are fast, close-winded, stiff, and well balanced. The boats were built by Ta Shing, the best of the Taiwanese boatbuilders and recognized as one of the best quality yards worldwide. Some have described the interior of the boat as a piece of fine furniture. History The Tashiba 36 heritage is intertwined with the Baba line of boats. It’s said the name “Tashiba” is probably a play of words, bringing together the name “Ta Shing” with “Baba”. These boats were the brainchild of developer Bob Berg who brought together Perry and discovered the boatyard that was to become the best in Taiwan. The three boat line-up of the Baba 30, 35, and 40 became a hit. The last of these boats, the Baba 40, eventually got renamed to the Tashiba 40 when Ta Shing took over the marketing and decided to forge ahead with their own line of yachts. Two smaller boats were required to fill out the new Tashiba line. Having designed the entire Baba line of boats, Perry was the natural choice for the two new boats that became the Tashiba 36 and the Tashiba 31. They were designed together in California with Ta Shing’s Taiwanese representative working closely with Perry. The Baba/Tashiba 40 having been derived off the lines of the legendary Valiant 40 performance cruiser showed such a marked improvement from Perry’s earlier full keel designs he decided to evolve the design further. Perry writes, “The turn to the bilges got even more firm for increased stability. The bows were finer”. The resulting design produced a boat that sailed incredibly well; fast and close winded enough to challenge many fin keel designs. Construction The boat’s hull is of hand-laminated fiberglass. The outer layers employ water and hence osmosis resisting vinylester resin. The interior of the boat is optionally lined with polyurethane insulation. Ballast is a single iron casting encapsulated in fiberglass. The deck is in GRP and cored with end-grain balsa. In areas where through-deck fittings are bolted, marine-plywood is used as coring and stainless-steel backing plates are used. Variations The boat was offered in a pilothouse version as well and the standard rear cockpit model. Rear cockpit models have a large stateroom forward and a quarter berth aft whereas the pilothouse has two large staterooms, one forward and the other midship. The pilothouse has an inside steering station as well as the pedestal steering from the cockpit. Both versions feature a pressurized hot water system with a shower in the head area.” Taken from an extract in Blue Water Boats by W L updated on 20th July 2015

Tashiba 36 PH

Tashiba 36 PH is a 35 ′ 11 ″ / 11 m monohull sailboat designed by Robert Perry and built by Ta Shing Yacht Building Ltd. starting in 1986.

Drawing of Tashiba 36 PH

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Tashiba 31/40 Pilothouse

  • Add to quote

Looking for other Tashiba 31/40 Pilothouse owners to discuss anything involved in sailing and maintaining these boats. I purchased mine in January and have had a hard time finding info about systems, construction, etc.

Jzeke16, I'm not an owner, but I've always admired these boat, especially the pilothouse variants. Which model did you purchase? The 31 or 40? My understanding is that these boats are genetically related to the Panda/Baba designs. If so, you may wish to add their names to your "hail". Say, could you help us out with something? Quite a few of us have been trying to I.D. a boat that TDW, a fellow Sailnetter, has seen in his marina in Australia. It is similar to other photos of the Panda 40 pilothouse, except it has a three windows on each side (front, port, and starboard) of the pilothouse instead of two. The photo of the boat appears here: http://www.sailnet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38446 My guess is that the boat in the photo is a Tashiba version of the Panda 40. If you can make something of it, go ahead and post to that thread. Thanks.

Tashiba 31 Pilothouse I bought the Tashiba 31 Pilothouse. It spent its early life on one of the great lakes and more recently Portsmouth, NH. I hail from Northport, NY and sail on LI Sound. The boat you're asking about looks like an early Baba 40. It has most of the Baba/Tashiba traits. I know the three cabin windows are different from the norm. Could it be a custom remodel?

Hey...I am the owner of the one and only 36 PH...and I'd love to talk about my boat! She is amazing...great sailing boat...tons of live aboard space...email me with questions.

Aisling, I am the owner of a Panda 40 PH and co-moderate the Baba-L @ Yahoo. Someone on the list is looking for you. Please email me bruce at brucepappas dot com. Thanks. -Bruce

That babaowner.org link is dead? Is there another? I'd really like to see more of the Tashiba 36 Pilothouse. I can't seem to find much for photos on the web?

Funny. I have a web site. I might know something about this. Maybe I don't. You'll never know unless you ask.

The Baba-Panda-Tashiba Sailboat Website site is www [dot] babaowners [dot] org (plural) - It's still active, but needs an update. Baba-Panda-Tashiba owners can be found at Yahoo: groups [dot] yahoo [dot] com/neo/groups/baba-l -Bruce

Wow, Bob Perry the very designer of so many lovely boats. I have not yet found interior images of the Pilothouse version of the Tashiba 36. I have found side view, topside and interior layout drawings and I believe possibly an exterior photo....though it might the shorter or longer boat? I'd really like to see some interior photos even though they're rare and used ones aren't likely to be found?

Aisling,, do you have any interior photos of your Pilothouse Tashiba 36?

I think there was only one Tashiba 36 PH built. Many Baba/Panda 40 PHs. -Bruce

I'm not sure Aisling is still monitoring this post. He hasn't been responsive to my questions. -Bruce

Hi Bruce, Aisling says he has one. Do you really think that ine is the only Tashiba 36 PH that was made? I had noticed a TaShing Panda 40 PH right here in Duluth Minnesota though I've not seen the interior but there are a few for sale and have seen plenty of interiors of those. The 31 and 36 Pilothouse versions not so much. The interior layout plan for the Tashiba 36 PH really makes me want to see the interior.

I have everything on these boats. I was there when they built them. I do not throw the plans away. All people have to do is ask politely. I have sailed all these boats. But with all the internet experts around I can't see how I could be of any more help. The story is in my book if you are interested. I'm nicer in my book.

Hey, Treez, that's my boat in Duluth at Lakehead. 1982 Panda 40 PH "Whisper". You're welcome to come see it sometime. Are you nearby? I launch tomorrow and then hope to be sailing soon. Contact me at bruce at brucepappas dot com I'll give you my cell. Hi, Bob. Glad to see you here. -Bruce

Hi Bruce Yes that's the one. I live on Park Point about a mile from the bridge. I walk by the Marinas and see Whisper often. I'd love to have a look at her. My cell is 218-370-0520 my real name is John. What time it she going in today?

Let's Get to Know Each Other

Let's connect, why it's important to partner with a designer on your tashiba 36 sail.

The design is the most critical part of your new sail. Ensuring the sail fits and performs its best is a must for our crew. The Precision Sails Design team are experts at their craft. Unlike other sail lofts all of our sailors work one-on-one with a designer to perfect their Tashiba 36 sail.

No Two Tashiba 36 Sails Are Alike

There are many factors that affect the performance and design of your sails. Location, sailing experience, and weather conditions all come into play when picking the perfect sail. Two mainsails made for two Tashiba 36’s in California and Florida will have different designs, sailcloth, and options based on what is best for the sailor.

Taking measurements is easy. All sailors work alongside our measurement team to measure and confirm their rig specs. This helps ensure your design is flawless and allows us to extend our Perfect Fit Guarantee to all of our sailors.

Discover the best cloth for your sailing needs, our sail details, or more about how Precision Sails is leading the sail-making industry with innovative new practices.

“ I just received my asymmetrical spinnaker, with sock and turtle bag, along with a new 135 Genoa. The entire process was simple and both sales and the design team were in regular contact if there were any questions. The customer portal was easy to use and lets you keep track of where in the process your sails are. Great sails, great service -Graham Edwards (Facebook)

“ We received our spinnaker and launched it yesterday and I just wanted to let you know how pleased we are with it. The service we received from your company was exceptional and the quality of your product is second to none. We will certainly be return customers in the next few months to replace our main and jib sails and will recommend your company to all our sailing buddies. Once again-thank you.” -Daniel Jackson (Google)
“ we had good communication during the planning stages and the knowledgeable people at precision sails really got me fixed up good! The sails look and work fabulous! my boat sails better than it ever had! couldn’t be more pleased with the product AND the service!” -Fred Jelich (Facebook)
“ Our new furling jib for a Corsair 27 Had to be specially designed due to the height of the furler, but this was accomplished quickly and in short order we had our sail which fits beautifully and has a great shape. It’s everything we could have wanted, high tech design, thoughtfully executed and affordable.” -Nancy Y. (Yelp)

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

toshiba 36 yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

toshiba 36 yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

toshiba 36 yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

toshiba 36 yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

toshiba 36 yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

toshiba 36 yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

toshiba 36 yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
