Horizon Welcomes the FD102 TO-KALON to the Family

Horizon kicked off the summer season with the pop of a champagne cork during the christening celebration of the brand new Horizon FD102, TO-KALON. The first FD102 superyacht to be delivered to the U.S., TO-KALON is the second hull of the Horizon FD102 model – the first of which was delivered to European owners in February 2020.

This is the second superyacht build for To-Kalon’s experienced owners, whose most recent yacht was a custom Cor D. Rover-designed Burger of the same name. Befitting her name inspired by Plato’s concept of beauty, TO-KALON indeed exudes beauty throughout and is poised to be one of Horizon’s flagship builds.

Welcomed by a spacious aft deck featuring a pleasant seating area with a bar, storage and television to starboard, guests enter the main deck through curved opening glass doors and are greeted by a delightful semi-al fresco dining area hosting an extendable round table set beneath a custom circular light fixture.

Oak, wenge and zebra woods feature prominently throughout the main and upper deck guest areas, which were designed in collaboration with Cor D. Rover and Horizon’s in-house design team. Numerous customized touches have been incorporated throughout, from the backlit mullions highlighting the salon to the customized galley fitted with professional-grade appliances. The owners also specified a stunning carved design in the opaque Hi/Lo partition that separates the galley from the salon.

Configured to accommodate ten guests in five spacious staterooms including an on-deck master, TO-KALON maximizes her impressive interior volume, which is augmented by a 25’ 3” beam. A his-and-hers en suite and his-and-hers walk-in closets complement the full-beam master stateroom, which resides just forward of the galley, powder room and custom wine cabinet. Storage was maximized throughout the yacht, and the four additional guest staterooms on the lower deck feature thoughtful customizations, multiple closets and beech, wenge and bird’s eye maple wood finishes.

On the upper deck, TO-KALON’S owners requested a semi-enclosed flybridge with sliding glass windows that allows the majority of this deck to function as an indoor/outdoor space. Just aft of the fully enclosed pilothouse, an oversized U-shaped seating area opposite a full bar with fixed bar stools and a dayhead is protected from the elements under the hard top. The deck area aft is fitted with an extendable dining table for up to 12, a BBQ and a Jacuzzi tub for six with a bar counter and fixed stools. This portion of the deck is easily shaded by an electric retractable awning. Situating the tender storage on the bow and removing the starboard staircase from the aft deck to the flybridge further maximized this space, which will be a preferred area for entertaining family and friends.

Those family and friends gathered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida as the champagne flowed and the owners christened their new yacht with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. Owner Dave Copham said, “It has been a very pleasant building experience working with everyone at Horizon both in the U.S. and Taiwan. Their willingness to consider our ideas, incorporate their own and to be willing to compromise on important matters is very commendable. We look forward to many years of enjoyable cruising on our specially designed yacht. We have Cor D. Spotlight – Horizon FD102 To-Kalon

The second launch in the FD102 series showcases the flexibility of the yard on a pioneering design that is finding fans in Europe and the US

In May, Horizon Yachts of Taiwan launched the second in its FD102 series, To-Kalon , which refers to Plato’s concept of beauty. Her American owner, David Copham, says “ We have Cor D. Rover to thank for the basic concept, which we think will be quite well received in the yachting community.” Rover designed Copham’s previous yacht, a Burger yacht also named To-Kalon .

The new To-Kalon is Copham’s first yacht build with Horizon, and judging from his commentary, he was pleased with the results.

Horizon Yachts has been willing to experiment over the years in ways that most other Asian yards do not. Horizon was the first to try all-solar powered catamarans in the 2000s, long before the intense interest they generate now.

The FD (FD stands for Fast Displacement) series was introduced by Horizon Yachts in conjunction with Cor D Rover and aims at delivering huge interior volumes in a solidly designed hull that yields great performance.

Rover developed the concept for the series, which took inspiration from the popularity of SUV cars in Europe. He approached Horizon CEO John Lu at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show with his FD concept for a 78-foot yacht, with lots of volume and large windows, and five staterooms.

“John immediately understood our idea and saw the potential for this type of yacht and what it could give to his clients,” says Rover. “I was brave to put it on paper, but John was even braver to develop it.” The FD series, which runs from 75 feet to 125 feet, was introduced at the Taiwan Boat Show in 2016.

Horizon developed a wave-piercing bow and hull design for the FD Series platform that focused on efficiency and a comfortable ride. The wave-piercing bow extends into a long skeg that runs the length of the hull, creating better directional stability.

The wave-piercing bow combined with a hard chine at the front of the hull reduces drag and increases waterline length for performance. Soft chines from the amidships and tunnels in the aft area further reduce resistance. The FD series hull also allows for a shallower draught.

Horizon has reportedly sold over 20 FD Series yachts in the years since the first launch. One FD yacht even came with a helipad for an Australian owner. “The fact that we sell so many and that other brands are following suit with big-volume designs of their own proves that this concept works,” says Rover.

“Just like Porsche did when creating the Cayenne SUV, we did the same with the FD Series,” says Rover. “Now the rest of the market is following us. Volume is king and will always be.”

To-Kalon accommodates up to 10 guests in five staterooms, including a full-beam master cabin. The on-deck master stateroom they specified a his-and-hers en suite as well as his-and-hers walk-in closets.

The owners requested a semi-enclosed flybridge with sliding glass windows, letting the majority of the upper deck to function as an indoor/outdoor space. Just aft of the pilothouse, a U-shaped seating area opposite a dayhead and full bar with fixed bar stools is protected under the hard top.

The deck area aft is fitted with an extendable dining table for up to 12, a BBQ and a Jacuzzi tub for six with a bar counter and fixed stools. This portion of the deck can be shaded by an electric awning.

The tender storage area was moved to the bow, where a crane is situated just forward of the helm station. This helped to maximise socialising space at the aft deck.

On the main deck, a bar, storage and TV area is located to starboard. The owners also asked for curved glass doors to the main salon and positioned the interior dining area aft to take advantage of the views. A round table for six can be extended to seat ten beneath a custom circular light fixture.

The galley was another important space for the owners, who customised the layout and commissioned professional-standard appliances. There is a carved design in opaque glass for the Hi/Lo partition separating the galley from the salon.

Oak, wenge and zebra woods feature prominently throughout the main and upper decks, while beech, wenge and bird’s eye maple complement the midship lower deck guest areas and crew quarters forward.

The overall effect is a bright, attractive interior that doesn’t get in the way of the enormous views offered by the large windows that are a main feature of the FD series. To-Kalon is to be on display at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this October. Given the success the FD series has had so far, and that a FD 102 is now in Europe and one in the US, it’s highly likely Horizon Yachts will be launching more high volume, fast displacement yachts in the near future.

Second Horizon FD102 Superyacht To-Kalon Delivered

The second hull in Horizon’s FD102 superyacht line To Kalon has been delivered.

Named  To Kalon after Plato’s concept of beauty, the yacht is the first FD102 delivered to US owners, who are first time clients of the yard.

The yacht is due to arrive in Fort Lauderdale in June and make her debut at the 2020 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this October.

The 31.01 metre yacht is part of the yard’s  Cor D Rover -designed Fast Displacement line but differs greatly from the first hull in the series, Impatient IV , which has a 33 metre LOA.

It also features an open galley, an open deck aft of the pilothouse and many more custom features.

Impatient IV  debuted as part of  Horizon’s Open House  in January this year and has an enclosed skylounge connected to the bridge.

Elsewhere, the model is powered by twin CAT C32A 1900hp engines, beam of 7.68 metres and draft of 1.92 metres.

The current To-Kalon however, features much more modern contemporary interiors which in this case were done in-house by Horizon Yachts. Cor d Rover was just responsible for the exterior styling along with the builder. The light-filled interior spaces are spacious and inviting and are finished on the lighter side of warmth on the temperature scale. Below is a glimpse of the main salon concept realized. The interior uses Zebrawood, Wenge and Oak on the main floors while the private spaces utilize Beech, Bird's Eye Maple and Wenge .

Even the exterior spaces are welcoming too and for example, refer to the following photo showing the aft main deck cockpit area. With a cocktail table that is flanked on all sides with very comfortable sofa-style seating, the space will see alot of use particularly at anchorage as it can seat the entire guest count in this area while still being a relatively intimate region.

A pair of CAT marine diesels permit a top speed just over 21-knots. Accommodation is for up to ten guests in five cabins with a full-beam master suite offering his and hers ensuite facilities. The full-beam accommodation is on the forward main deck while the guest accommodation is on the lower deck. When an experienced boating couple first approached Burger Boat Company to discuss plans for a new yacht, they knew exactly what they wanted: a unique vessel that would not only stand out in any marina or anchorage, but also incorporate features and ideas they had accumulated over many years of yachting.

The result of that collaboration is TÒ-KALÒN, a contemporary-styled enclosed bridge motor yacht. The Burger Design Team joined forces with Cor D. Rover Design and Donald L. Blount & Associates to develop a vessel that is both elegant and technologically advanced.

The Limitless Life

One of the owner’s top priorities was a “need-for-speed” without sacrificing world-class yacht quality. The unique hull design that was developed provides the necessary lift to achieve higher speeds while ensuring comfortable sea-keeping qualities. Use of lightweight materials and carefully calculated design and engineering parameters combined to produce a top speed of 27.8 knots.

TÒ-KALÒN’s interior revolves around Sapele paneling with accents of Sapele Pomele, which flows throughout the main deck salon and guest accommodations. Guests enter the main salon through electric sliding doors aft. This space features a custom bar and a forward dining area, combined to provide a multifunctional area to ensure quality time with friends and family.

TÒ-KALÒN’s dining area is easily serviced by the galley, located forward of the dining area on the main deck. Next to the galley is the laundry area, which provides access to crew accommodations. The owner’s stateroom is located on the lower deck and contains two separate heads with a shared shower. Forward of the owner’s stateroom are two additional guest cabins with ensuite heads.

A focal point of TÒ-KALÒN’s interior is the centrally located open spiral staircase, crafted from select Sapele veneers and hardwoods and accented by a custom brass balustrade. Suspended in front of three large, full length windows and ascends from the owner’s accommodations up to the sky lounge and pilothouse.

Exquisitely paneled in Kaya wood with Ebony inlays, the sky lounge features a comfortable seating area, a spacious desk with bookshelves, flat screen TV and a domed ceiling painted by a New York artist. The aft bridge deck is a relaxing retreat complete with lounge seating, hot tub and sun pads.

The all aluminum TÒ-KALÒN is powered by a pair of 2,400-hp MTU marine engines and is fully ABS certified. TÒ-KALÒN has several additional unique features including a comprehensive ship’s monitoring and information system integrated with the entire vessel’s electrical power system.

The Taiwanese luxury yacht builder Horizon has announced the launch of the striking SD102 superyacht TO-KALON with exterior design by Cor D. Rover. The yacht was inspired by Plato’s concept of beauty and this is very much reflected throughout the entire vessel.

One of the main features and adjustments requested by the Owner is the semi-enclosed flybridge boasting sliding windows which can transform the entire space into an indoor and outdoor area. On the main deck, there is a large alfresco dining area which flows beautifully with the yachts’ inviting and elegant interiors.

ToKalon is a 100% custom built Yacht from conception to completion. Still owned by her original owners, in 2006 her owners decided to build a custom yacht from scratch. They had extremely specific requirements which could not be meet by production yacht manufactures. So the yacht had to be 100% custom.

Engineered For World Travel One of the key features of To-Kalon is that she was specifically designed and engineered for world travel. Her owners had specific travel destinations in mind which included travel from Spain to the Greek Island, Bahamas, Eastern Seaboard of the USA, and Nova Scotia through the Great Lakes. The owners also required the vessel to be built to ABS Class as safety and reliability was of the up most importance. To achieve this length, draft , speed, and cruising range, were of key importance.

Length  was of concern as the owners desired to dock in port at their destinations. Typically vessels built to the standards of To-Kalon are in excess of 45M or 150’ in length. This size point would not work for mooring in port at 90% of their desired destinations. Thus To-Kalon was built at 101’6” so she could dock in port where others would have to anchor off shore.

Draft  was a key factor as well as many of their desired destinations required shallow draft vessels and or waiting for tides for entry and exit. So much effort and engineering was dedicated to achieve 5'5" draft.

Speed  was paramount in the design of the vessel. The owner demanding not less than 22 knots at full load. This was a daunting task with the rest owners of the requirements of the vessel. Tank testing at the University of Michigan was conducted prior to construction to make sure this was achieved.

Range  was a key factor as well. The owners desired a range of 700 nautical miles of continues running at speeds over twenty knots. This allowed To-Kalon on her maiden voyage to depart the Burger plant in Wisconsin, and to arrive in Ft Lauderdale in just 15 days.

By achieving all of the above, and having world compatible power systems aboard, has allowed To-Kalon to successfully travel to all of the owners desired destinations.

Several custom yacht manufactures were entertained around the world, but in the end they decided to go with Burger yachts. The criteria was to build a yacht with the quality and safety features of a 200’+ yacht in a body of no longer than 101’4”. Additional criteria was to have tops speeds close to 30 knots, range at cruise speed (22+ Kn) of 700 nautical miles, draft of approximately 5.5’ at full load, world travel capability and electrical systems to be comparable, and built to ABS class.

To complete this challenging task Cor D. Rover was brought in for the styling and design from the waterline up and Donald L. Blount and Associates was contracted for naval architecture for the waterline down. Cor D Rover is a well-known Dutch designer that creates timeless designs for large yachts. Donald L. Blount and Associates is known for their integrated systems-hull shapes, propulsion sections, and achieving low weight targets. Donald Blount also was the head of the U.S. Navy design team for everything up to 200’. Burger Yachts was tasked with the challenge of producing an elegant lightweight interior while maintaining their traditional interior standards. Needless to say the owner’s criteria made for an extremely challenging project. In order to achieve their criteria weight control was essential. One of contributing elements used by Burger yachts to eliminate excess weight was the use of Alustar aluminum alloy. This aluminum alloy is lighter and stronger than traditional marine alloys. Additionally the hull design was tank tested at the University of Michigan to ensure the hull design was optimal prior to construction.

Additionally the owners wanted strict oversight of the project. They hired Dean Vaughn who is an experienced yacht manager and engineer. Dean moved his family and lived in Manitowoc, WI (location of Burger plant) until launch and followed up with the boat until work was completed several weeks later. In addition to Dean’s oversight the owners Captain who is still aboard the vessel was on site once a month during construction and full time for the last three months before delivery. This provided for the highest level of quality control possible.

Since ToKalon’s departure from the Burger plant in October 2008 the quality control of the construction has been continued in her maintenance. She receives an annual ABS safety inspection as well as completed her 5 year and 10 year ABS class survey inspections. These inspections have maintained her to ABS class since new. Her last ABS survey was completed in the summer of 2018

Walkthrough

As you walk up to ToKalon you’re struck with her size, stature, and timeless design. Boarding her aft deck you’re taken by her beautiful teak decks and large round teak table with seating for 8. You have access around the entire vessel via her side deck walk ways. This allows owners, guest, and crew to navigate around the exterior decks of the vessel freely without accessing the salon. There is a crew door on the forward port side of the vessel giving the crew direct access into the laundry, galley, and their quarters without going through the owners areas. There are two stair ways to the swim deck port and starboard on the aft deck. On the swim deck there is a door accessing the engine room. Back up on the aft deck there is an additional crew access into the engine room for access underway as well as a crew ladder to the fly bridge.

Entering the salon from the aft deck, there are double doors that are automatic by push of a button. Upon the opening of the doors you are taken back by the size, beauty, and of craftsmanship of the Sapele paneling with accents of Sapele Pomele. This exquisite wood work is seen on the vessels main deck and staterooms.

Port side in the salon you have a large couch and two end chairs, starboard you have built-in cabinetry with high low TV. The salon entertainment is controlled by an Ipad that’s linked through the vessels Crestron AV system.

Forward of the salon entertainment center is a beautifully crafted walk behind bar with seating for 4, or the chairs can be removed and the bar will raise for walk up entertaining. Behind the bar is a sink and storage for glass ware as well as a refrigerator.

Dining room is forward of the salon with table and chairs that can seat up to 10. Forward of the dining table is a built in china cabinet with two wine Sub Zero wine refrigerators.

Starboard of the dining room is a focal point of the salon, a beautiful open spiral staircase that was crafted from select Sapele veneers and hard woods and accented by a custom brass balustrade. The stair case in centered within three full length windows allowing an abundance of light down into the staterooms foyer.

Dayhead is located between the dining room and galley just forward of stairs accessing skylounge.

Galley is located forward of the dining room. There are double entry doors separating the galley from the dining and salon to limit noise. The galley has a country kitchen arrangement with large windows port and starboard, very large island in the center which is great for food preparation, large L-shaped dinette to starboard with seating for 6+. One of the focal points of galley is the large stainless steel double glass door Cospolich commercial sized refrigerator/freezer. Additional appliances are all commercial grade Miele & Dacor.

Owner staterooms are accessed via the spiral staircase in the salon. There is a large Onyx foyer at the bottom of the stairs that accesses the master stateroom and two guest staterooms. Also hidden behind paneling in the foyer is a commercial grade Miele washer/dryer and there is an additional washer dryer in the crew laundry located forward of the galley.

Master stateroom is located aft of foyer through double doors. King sized bed is centerline in the stateroom, his and her closets, built-in desk, TV in celling above bed, and his and her baths aft in the stateroom. Baths features beautiful marble and granite finishing’s.

There are two guest staterooms forward of the master. Port guest has double beds that can be joined to make a king, private ensuite bath with marble and granite finishing’s. Starboard stateroom has a queen bed, ensuite bath with marble and granite finishing’s. All staterooms have large hull side windows allowing an abundance of natural light into the rooms.

Skylounge, accessed via hard wood staircase to starboard of dining room. Kaya wood paneling with ebony inlays accent the room beautifully. State-of-the-art helm is located forward with a double Stidd helm seat and dinette seat and table to starboard for observation. To port is a large chart table and cabinet. Helm features (4) large 19’ display monitors which provide comprehensive monitoring of all vessel systems. Systems monitoring software is by Tijssen elektro which is a state of the art monitoring soft ware usually only seen in very large mega yachts. The Tijssen is remote accessible and reports via text as well.

Aft of helm there are two couches, custom coffee table, built-in desk to starboard, and two automatic doors giving access to aft deck of flybridge.

As you pass through the doors and proceed onto the aft bridge deck there is a large teak table with 4 chairs and bench seating aft for up to 7. Additionally the hard top of the skylounge extends to cover bridge seating and table.

Aft of the bridge seating is a large raised Jacuzzi that doubles as a large sunning area when Jacuzzi is not in use. Bridge also features custom sun shade, stainless steel BBQ grill, on-deck head, and an abundance of storage. Tender and davit are located far aft on the bridge deck.

Crew and crew laundry facilities are located forward of the galley. There is a port side door in the crew laundry area that gives the crew access to the exterior of the vessel without passing through the owners areas. Down the stairs of the crew laundry in the bow of the vessel are two staterooms and two heads. The captains room is aft and has a full size bed with an additional bunk above in the event of bringing additional crew members. Additionally there is a full sized head within the captain cabin. Forward of the captains stateroom is a bunk room with full bath within.

ToKalons Galley is equipped with commercial grade appliances and designed with full service crew and chef needs in mind.

ToKalon is equipped with satellite HD TV, satellite phone and data, cellular data, and on-board network for data that can be provided by one of the on-board systems or available dockside networks.

Technical Systems Monitoring

ToKalon is equipped with Tijssen elektro monitoring software.The system monitors every functioning system aboard the vessel. The information travels through a LAN network aboard the vessel and can be remotely accessed from anywhere in the word. The system also reports via text. The software aboard the vessel is the latest version available.

ToKalon is built to (ABS) class American Bureau of Shipping.

Since design and construction of ToKalon she has been in compliance with ABS. All required annual safety inspections as well as her first five year inspection in 2013 and her 10 year inspection in the summer of 2018 have been completed and she remains complaint with ABS and in class.

World Compatible Power System

Power Sources—ASEA 75kVA dual cabinet shore power converter allows vessel to be connected worldwide on any shore power supply, it will accept any standard within the range of 170V to 520V 40-70 Hz, 1 to 3 phases and output a clean 120/208/3/60 to be fed into the main switchboard.

Engine Room & Mechanical

Sanitary System: Headhunter toilets arc installed and discharge into a centralized black holding tank located in the engine room. The holding tank is connected to a Hamman Wassertechnik sewage treatment system to treat and sanitize waste water before it is discharged overboard.

Bilge Oil/Water Separator: A Heli-Sep bilge oil/water separator with OCD oil content meter is installed in compliance with USCG/MARPOL. The separator discharges clean water overboard and sludge to the sludge tank.

Steering Control System: A Jastram steering system is installed.

Fin Stabilization System: The vessel is equipped with a 2-Fin Quantum Marine Model QC I000 stabilizer system.

Bow Thruster: The vessel is equipped with a Quantum Bow Thruster, 16 inch diameter, model QT- 120 Duo prop rated at approximately 120 hp with proportional controls in the Pilothouse and wing stations.

Chiller System

ToKalon is equipped with a MarineAir SCW 270 Chiller. This 3-stage unit employs three 7.5 ton high efficiency Copeland scroll compliant compressors. Each compressor is equipped with a Variable Frequency Drive to eliminate high current inrush and provide soft starting.

The ship is equipped with an automatic power management system with the following features:

Lighting Systems

ToKalon has a Crestron lighting system that controls all on-board lighting. The system is programmed for each room and each has its own lighting controls. 

Electrolysis Prevention

ToKalon is equipped with an Evoqua Water Technologies electrolysis meter. The meter reads the protective value between all of the vessels metals. This allows the crew to monitor electrical currents that could effect the vessels metals.  

Ground Tackle

The windlass and ground tackle system include two Maxwell VCW 4000 windlassess, two Muir F84-LRD31616 chain stopper/roller/tensioners and two Davis HHP-200 anchors. System is powered by PTO from main engines and or hydraulic system through remote power pack.

​At what price, To Kalon?

17 April We published this article initially for members only on 17 March this year but thought that Alder's story deserved to be shared with everyone. It illustrates vividly the difference in pricing strategy between the world's two greatest concentrations of Cabernet quality, Napa Valley and Bordeaux. In the annals of California viticulture, few named vineyards can approach To Kalon in either historical significance or popular acclaim. To Kalon has long been known for producing phenomenal wines, but increasingly it has also become famous for something else entirely: the price of its grapes.

A quote by grower Andy Beckstoffer graces the inside cover of a coffee-table book of photographs entitled Cabernet: A Photographic Journey from Vine to Wine by photographer Charles O’Rear. 'Cabernet is royalty!’ it reads. ‘She is noble, she is powerful, voluptuous, and a profit to all the senses.’

Beckstoffer owns 89 acres (36 ha) of the historical To Kalon vineyard and, since he raised his grape prices again last year, some people have started to grumble about just how much profit might actually be involved.

The To Kalon vineyard was planted by Henry W Crabb in the late 1860s, and named for the Greek to kalon ‘the beautiful'. Once spanning more than 359 acres (145 ha) and containing more than 400 different grape varieties thanks to the nurseryman’s obsessive experimentation, pieces of To Kalon changed hands many times after Crabb’s death in 1899. Today the pieces of that historic vineyard are in the hands of three primary owners: Robert Mondavi Winery, Opus One (the joint venture between Robert Mondavi and the owners of Ch Mouton Rothschild), and grower Andy Beckstoffer.

Until the year 2000, no wines other than those produced by Mondavi were allowed to carry the To Kalon name. But in the settlement of a lawsuit over Schrader Vineyard’s use of the name on their label (having purchased fruit from Beckstoffer), Beckstoffer (and by extension, those producers who buy from him) was granted a perpetual royalty-free licence to use the To Kalon name.

Since then, the three words Beckstoffer To Kalon have graced some of the highest-rated and most expensive bottles of wine made in Napa. Names such as Schrader, Paul Hobbs, Tor Kenward Family Wines, Realm Cellars, Provenance, Alpha Omega, and Morlet Family Vineyards have all bottled vineyard-designated wines from Beckstoffer To Kalon.

In the October 2014 issue of Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate no fewer than four wines from the vineyard scored the coveted 100-point rating, with dozens more scoring well above 95 points.

Beckstoffer, who makes no wine himself, uses a very particular pricing model for his To Kalon grapes. His contracts with customers specify three pricing scenarios for the grapes: a fixed price per ton, a fixed price per acre, and a fixed multiplier of the winery’s suggested retail price per bottle, with a required minimum bottle price. The per-acre price acts as an insurance policy in the event of a winemaker’s deciding to restrict yields to unusually low levels. For the most part, winemakers simply pay the higher of the other two prices.

Last year, Beckstoffer invited every one of his customers to his office for a conversation in which he explained carefully that he was not going to be renewing any grape-purchasing contracts. Instead he would be raising his prices, and offering the opportunity to begin entirely new contracts following the expiration of the current ones.

His new prices, he announced, would be as follows: either $18,000 per ton or 175 times the bottle price per ton whichever was higher, with a minimum of $45,000 per acre as insurance against aggressive yield reduction. The minimum price that anyone could charge for a bottle with Beckstoffer To Kalon on the label would be $125 (the Mondavi version from their property currently retails at $145/£98/€137).

Do some quick maths, and you quickly realise that someone selling a bottle of Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon for US $150 (one of the lowest prices for such a bottle you’ll find) will soon be paying US $26,250 per ton of grapes, while the top producers, whose 100-point wines sell for US $300 or more, will be paying more than US $50,000 per ton of grapes.

Prior to this latest price rise, most customers were paying 100 times their bottle price per ton, and for some the jump to a multiple of 175, even with a couple of years’ warning, was a lot to stomach.

‘I can't blame him for asking, I’m just curious to see how many will pay it and for how long', wrote one winemaker who has been making a To Kalon bottling for many years. ‘I know one or two people who were outraged.’

As you may imagine, every winemaker or winery owner who spoke to me for this report wanted to remain anonymous. Several suggested that they knew at least one customer who had decided not to continue buying, and another I spoke to indicated they were likely to stop once their existing contract ran out.

‘I don’t know yet what we will do [when our contract expires]', said one, ‘Will I swallow it? I will try to negotiate, as this is a steep increase. It’s a real debate I am having right now.’

‘Is it fair?’ he continued, ‘I don’t know. It is an amazing site. It is the most well-known vineyard in Napa. The To Kalon brand is so big and so recognised, I’m not so sure how smart it is to let it go.’

Considering To Kalon as a brand proves unusually helpful in thinking through the incredible prices it is able to command. How is it that people are willing to pay $50,000 for a ton of Beckstoffer To Kalon fruit, when the average price for a ton of high-quality Napa Cabernet Sauvignon on the open market was $5,800 in 2014 according to Ciatti, the global wine and grape brokerage that handles the sale of much of Napa’s excess fruit and wine?

‘In some cases, the name of the vineyard is much better known than the winery', says Beckstoffer. ‘We’re not just a grower anymore, we’re selling a branded product.’

We can think about a brand as a name into which we project a personality and a set of values. But the most valuable brands in the world have achieved and keep their stature because they ultimately deliver to their customers the things that they symbolically represent.

And this is precisely the point that Beckstoffer will make in the context of explaining why his fruit is more expensive than anyone else’s in the valley, a fact for which he feels no need to apologise.

‘Up until 20 years ago, the best wines made in Napa were almost always designated as Reserve wines', says Beckstoffer. ‘That was the era of the magic chef. The winemaker said “bring me whatever you want from the vineyards”, and then the winemaker did his magic, and that is how you got a higher quality wine.’

‘But then we asked ourselves, how could we raise the quality of the wines', continues Beckstoffer, speaking for the collective community of Napa growers and winemakers. ‘We decided to focus on vineyard designates. We found the great sites, we raised the quality of the terroir and we showed off that terroir.’

‘The Reserve wines were creations, something like Barbie Dolls™. If you had a problem with any grapes you added a little shoulder here, a little breast there until you had something approaching great. The vineyard-designate is something else. It’s a beauty with a chipped tooth. You see every imperfection as it is. It’s a new world of wine quality that we’re in, and if what everyone says is true, that the wine is made in the vineyard, then the vineyard is where that quality comes from and the grower should share in the profitability that comes from that quality.’

‘We’re used to paying based on the quality of the ingredients', suggests Beckstoffer, ‘especially when it comes to food and where it was grown. Translate that to wine and you get higher prices for Napa grapes than for elsewhere, and you get yet higher prices for individual vineyards. But you have to prove that quality.’

As far as Beckstoffer is concerned, the scores from all the major critics are all the proof he needs for what his To Kalon vineyard can deliver in terms of quality.

As steep as his prices might be for that quality, they are far from arbitrary, however. In fact, they are rooted in what Beckstoffer claims is a set of historical norms. According to him, as far back as the 1970s, in an effort to get themselves out of purely commodity-based pricing, better-quality grape growers in Napa began successfully to argue for what he calls a bottle-price formula that tied the price of grapes to the sale price of the wine.

Enlisting the help of, among others, the consulting firm Price Waterhouse Coopers, Beckstoffer established that on average, the historical cost of grapes (inclusive of all the labour and materials involved in growing them) for most premium wineries came to about 26% of the final wholesale bottle price to the market, which was how most wineries sold their wine. With somewhere between 65 to 75 cases of wine made per ton of grapes, Beckstoffer’s calculations have that amount ending up somewhere around 100 times the bottle price per ton.

Indeed, even today, if you figure that the average price of a Napa-designated Cabernet Sauvignon is around $50 per bottle, at a bulk price of $5,900 per ton, the 100 to 1 ratio holds up pretty well, even 30 or 40 years later.

But something very important has changed over those decades. Not only have the prices for top-quality Napa Cabernets sky-rocketed, thanks in no small measure to their critical acclaim, but the proportion of those top wines sold almost entirely direct to the consumer has also sky-rocketed.

That change alone means to Beckstoffer that as a measure of their overall profit per bottle, the cost of grapes has gone from 26% of a winery’s total revenue to at least half of that amount. And when it comes to his grapes, he thinks that he is entitled to his fair share of the pie.

‘Look at it this way', he says. ‘If you are a winery and you’re charging $350 for a bottle of To Kalon Cabernet, and you’re making roughly 55 cases per ton of grapes (an average that Beckstoffer says holds up pretty well among his clients), your revenue on that wine is $231,000 per ton of grapes you buy from me. I’m not telling you whether to charge $350 a bottle, I’m just asking for my share.’

At his current pricing of 175 times the bottle price, Beckstoffer’s share would be exactly 26.5% of that $231,000.

The Beckstoffer customers who will be most keenly challenged by this new pricing scheme will be those who do not sell mainly direct to consumers at full retail prices.

‘If you’re buying Andy’s grapes at 175 times the bottle price and your business plan is selling mostly through wholesalers, that’s a pretty rough business', says one winemaker I talked with. ‘You’re almost certainly losing money. To get in and work with grapes that expensive you have to look at your business model and know what you’re willing to lose, or just how much you have to sell directly to the consumer in order to make it work.’

‘I’ve talked with some of the other people who are buying To Kalon fruit', said one frustrated winemaker, ‘and the winery principal said “yeah, we know we can’t make any money on this, but we have customers who have come to expect the wine, so we need to keep making it.’’

‘Do you know how they’re going to keep doing it?’ continued this winemaker, ‘They’re taking money out of their marketing budget to pay for the grapes.’

Regardless of their feelings about this most recent price rise, every winemaker I spoke with had nothing but praise for Beckstoffer, both as a grower and as a businessman. Even those whose reactions approached outrage begrudgingly admitted that as the owner of an incredibly scarce resource, Beckstoffer was ultimately justified in charging whatever he thought the market could bear for his grapes.

‘Are the prices too high?’ mused one winemaker. ‘Andy is no dummy. He knows he can only push so much. But we’re not there yet. There’s a lot of money coming into the valley right now. There’s enough money in China that Andy could sell every last grape to the Chinese if he wanted to, at whatever prices he wanted.’
