opera yacht arriving to Portsmouth

146m Lürssen superyacht Opera delivered

The 146-metre superyacht Opera has been delivered after leaving Lürssen's Bremen site in northern Germany. The tenth-largest privately owned yacht in the world undertook her maiden voyage to Portsmouth Harbour in the UK where she arrived yesterday (5 March).

Terence Disdale is responsible for both the exterior and interior of the yacht, which is understood to have a 20-metre beam and interior volume exceeding 10,000GT.

After paying a visit to Portsmouth, she is expected to continue onwards to a home berth in the Mediterranean or Middle East.

While details are sparse, pictures show a pair of helipads on the foredeck and upper deck aft and two swimming pools on the sun deck and main deck, the latter of which has a rise-and-fall floor.

Opera is thought to be a rebuild project of 145-metre Project Sassi, which was destroyed in the 2018 shipyard fire.

The yacht joins eight other in-build Lürssen superyachts, including the 100-metre-plus Project Alibaba and the 122-metre Project Jag , which is set to hit the water soon with delivery in 2023.

$450m Superyacht OPERA Anchors in Portsmouth International Port

By Heather Collier

Opera, one of the world's largest luxury superyachts, visited Portsmouth's International Port on Sunday from Bremen, North Germany.

Opera, the tenth largest superyacht in the world, was delivered to her owners in the UK earlier this month following her launch in September 2022.

Featuring distinctive exterior lines from the drawing board of esteemed yacht designer Terence Disdale, OPERA is yet another shining example of German shipyard Lürssen.

After being anchored in Portsmouth's International Port for several days, she is now due to continue onwards to the Mediterranean or Middle East.

Ben McInnes, Portsmouth International Port’s Harbour Master, commented: " This impressive super yacht Opera has been using the facilities at the port for a couple of days. It’s not unusual to welcome these vessels, and as a pilot it’s certainly a pleasure to go onboard although we’re only permitted to the crew based areas unfortunately . At 146m, it is one of the world’s largest superyachts, so definitely a spectacle to watch sail out of the harbour."

Despite boasting a strong white profile, seven expansive decks, twin helipads, and two open-air swimming pools, many of the key design details and specifications of OPERA remain highly secretive.

Watch: Lürssen’s 146m megayacht Opera makes maiden voyage in Portsmouth

Wednesday, March 8th, 2023

Written by: Marine Industry News

Lürssen Yachts - Launching OPERA

The 146.4-metre superyacht Opera has been delivered to its owners after leaving Lürssen’s Bremen facility in north Germany.

The superyacht — now the tenth largest in the world and the shipyard’s sixth biggest to date — made its maiden voyage in Portsmouth on the UK’s south coast on Sunday (5 March 2023). The vessel undertook a crew change before departing again at 10am Monday morning (6 March).

This impressive drone footage of the yacht’s arrival in Portsmouth, taken by GAP Drone Services, demonstrates the vessel’s daunting scale compared to the buildings on the harbourfront.

Opera has a volume of 12,518 GT. The interior and exterior design is by Terence Disdale Design, while the naval architecture was penned in-house at Lürssen .

Not much detail is known about the yacht’s features, with most information about the project being kept highly secret. Photos show two helipads — one fore and one aft — two swimming pools, and an expansive beach club. Media reports have placed its value at around $450m.

After completing its maiden voyage in Portsmouth, the yacht is expected to continue to its home berth in either the Middle East or the Mediterranean . Unconfirmed media reports claim the yacht’s owner is Abu Dhabi-based Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He is the son of the founder of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Opera is said to be a rebuild project of 145-metre Project Sassi, which was destroyed in a shipyard fire in 2018. The vessel is just one metre longer than Lürssen’s Luminance , which was recently launched and will also be delivered to its owner soon.

World’s largest ocean race sets sail from Portsmouth

  • Sunday 3 September 2023 at 12:58pm

superyacht in portsmouth harbour today

The world’s largest ocean race is under way as competitors set sail on a 46,000-mile journey which will take almost a year to complete.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet, features over 700 people representing 55 nationalities sailing on a fleet of 70ft racing yachts.

They will depart from Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth, on Sunday ready to tackle freezing temperatures and 40-foot waves as well as the blistering heat of the tropics.

This year’s competitors include one of the youngest ever skippers and the first mother-daughter duo sailing together on the same boat.

Amanda Shehab, 56, from Wrexham, will be competing with her daughter, Megan Allpress, 26, after her husband, who planned to sail around the world with her, died of cancer aged 51.

Ms Shehab said it was “fitting” that they were setting sail almost exactly two years to the day of his death.

“I want to think of it as a positive, happy thing.

“We went and saw the clipper race in 2018 in Liverpool.

“I said to him, ‘shall we do it?’

“We then thought we want to sail around the world so we bought our own boat and we were going to do it that way but sadly then he got a brain tumour and he didn’t make it.

“I thought after he’s gone I’ll disintegrate, I don’t know what I’ll do, but then I thought of clipper and I thought, right, I’ll do that.

“I signed up almost immediately after he’d gone.

“We’re so lucky to be able to do this together.”

When Ms Allpress heard her mother had signed up for the challenge, she decided to quit her job as an engineer and join her.

She said: “I just thought, ‘life is short – if you want to do something, do it’.”

Hannah Brewis, 27, from Grantham, Lincolnshire, skipper of the the Washington DC boat, is the third youngest the competition has ever had.

She first started sailing when she was nine years old, describing it as a “hobby which has gone a bit too far”.

She said: “If you’d have told me when I was 18 I was going to sail around the world I’d have said, ‘oh my God, that’s amazing’.

“As a professional sailor to sail around the world is the pinnacle of what you can achieve.”

The Clipper Race was founded by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo and non-stop around the world in 1968.

The fleet is currently racing 1,200 nautical miles to Puerto Sherry, Spain, a brand new destination on the Clipper Race circuit, ahead of crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Punta del Este, Uruguay.

The race will also stop at locations including Cape Town, South Africa, Fremantle, Newcastle and Airlie Beach, Australia, Halong Bay, Vietnam, Qingdao and Zhuhai, China, Seattle and Washington DC, before returning to Portsmouth at the end of July, 2024, via Oban, Scotland.

According to the race organisers, 22% of competitors had never sailed before signing up to the challenge, which required them to take part in four intensive stages of training.

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

  • The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
  • The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

Insider Today

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

Related stories

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .
