Joy: On board Feadship’s 70m superyacht with a basketball court and disco
The owner's first yacht, Joy is a 70 metre Feadship , but this is one owner for whom size is not everything.
The bigger the saloon, the less it gets used. Despite this being one of the few generally accepted rules of superyacht design, boats are still pouring out of sheds with wide-open acreage on their main and upper decks. Designers earn their money making these spaces feel as comfortable as possible, but there’s often no hiding the fact that they’re just really big rooms. And who feels comfortable putting their feet up in one of those?
Clearly not the owner of 70 metre Joy , who has pulled off something of a magic trick with this, his very first yacht: he’s made it feel cosy. “I did not want some floating villa with vast internal spaces compromising the relationship with the ocean and the interior,” he says.
“We did not need to be compromised by some preset platform or convention. We designed Joy with our own lifestyle and vision in mind.” To achieve this, volume has been turned right down. Joy carries fewer gross tonnes (around 1,100) than any other 70 metre motor yacht on the water.
Even Heesen ’s low-slung and sporty Galactica Super Nova is packing a bigger interior. Benetti ’s stacked 70 metre Freedom , by comparison, has almost twice the internal volume, at 1,975GT. “I wanted a yacht that was progressive and not afraid of challenging convention,” Joy ’s owner adds, consigning the superyachting mantra of “more and bigger” to the dustbin.
Actually, that’s not quite true of the whole boat. By keeping the interior human-sized, the decks have been exaggerated. You can comfortably walk two abreast down Joy ’s ample side decks, protected the entire time by the high bulwarks and deck overhang above.
The owner’s deck, meanwhile, should really be known as the “promenade deck”. You can stroll hand in hand around the entire superstructure, all on one level. You could even jog in tandem. Feadship claims there’s more teak on Joy than any other comparable superyacht. I can believe it — it just keeps going, ending up on the owner’s deck in a basketball and badminton court all the way forward.
Joy wasn’t always going to have such expansive outside spaces; she grew from 50 metres to 63 metres and finally to 70 metres. Simon Rowell, creative director at Bannenberg & Rowell , which designed her exterior and layout, says: “Once Joy was mapped out and engineered [at 63 metres], the owner asked us to study a longer prow, in essence for two simple reasons: he felt that a longer external foredeck visually gave more breathing space between hull and superstructure and leant the yacht an elegant stance on the water; secondly, he would benefit from a very large terrace forward of his suite, effectively extending his family deck significantly.”
It was a savvy move from the young owner, whose defiance of yachting norms extended to his choice of collaborators in the creation of his boat. Joy is the first exterior design by Bannenberg & Rowell to hit the water, while for the interior he turned to London-based Studio Indigo , which had designed boats before but never on the scale of Joy .
The company is led by Mike Fisher, who said he was asked to create an interior that was “unique and non-boat like”. He continues: “The client and his wife are young, energetic and visionary. They look to the future and rarely to the past. They hoped the design of Joy would create a real sense of contentment and comfort, without making the boat feel like every other yacht and avoiding the clichéd details that would date in years to come.”
The approach has led to an interior that’s not easy to pigeonhole, but which Fisher describes as “vintage, without being overtly fashionable”. Equally outside-the-box is Joy ’s superstructure, which looks as if it was carved.
“We wanted to connect with the surroundings, to garner the best views,” says James Carley, director of exterior design at Bannenberg & Rowell. “Chamfering the edges [of the superstructure overhangs] effectively raises the external deckheads, both around the side walkways and the overhanging aft decks.” This drive to provide a generous outlook from every internal space led to some “ongoing but friendly” battles with Feadship, says Rowell, who with Carley pushed to make sills and coamings on Joy as minimal as possible, to allow the maximum possible glazing.
The best example of this is to the rear of the bridge deck, where the entire space has been given over to Joy’s glass-walled superyacht gym , kitted out with the latest Technogym equipment. It’s a hybrid space — both inside and outside — and was an important requirement for the owner, who says enthusiastically: “The gym on the bridge deck may be the best place to work out anywhere in the world!”
Carley adds that he would have removed the entire structure from this area if he could, but the exhaust casings were non-negotiable. Still, Joy ’s gym is an incredibly bright and inviting space, one that is actually quite hard to walk through without an urge to better yourself — a benefit of placing a wellness area like this in an unavoidable part of a yacht, rather than squirrelling it away on a lower deck.
Double stairs forward sweep up to the superyacht sundeck and its pool, which together create an exclusive perch at the top of Joy . The gym’s blurring of what is exterior and interior extends across the main and upper decks, which both have winter gardens that can be closed off with glass to take them from outside to inside with a nod to a deckhand.
The challenge for Studio Indigo was managing this interface, to make sure there’s no jarring as you enter the yacht proper. “We used a great many finishes and textiles as well as materials and styling of furniture to make the exteriors feel like an extension of the interior spaces,” says Fisher. “Moreover, each living area has windows looking out on to the wide walkways — making the rooms feel much larger than they are.”
Then there are the carpets in Joy ’s upper and main saloons that demand you walk barefoot, drawing you into the comfortable interior. The main saloon’s is silk and nettle and made by German firm Jan Kath, represented by Front Rugs. The seating in here is low and comfortable, while an Irish whiskey bar to starboard, made in the UK by Silverlining, keeps things social.
The only other saloon on Joy , on the upper deck, couldn’t feel more different. This is very deliberately a family space. “There were certain vital principles that we were determined to achieve to make the yacht work and flow with different groups and situations,” the owner says. “There are elements such as the owner’s deck, which is almost a penthouse so I can be alone with my family.” Joy ’s layout reflects this, with a master suite forward and a pair of double cabins amidships for the two children the only accommodation on this level.
Studio Indigo used more than 250 finishes throughout Joy — “too many to mention!” jokes Fisher. “We gave each area its own unique and highly individual character by using diverse materials and patterns. We didn’t just want to give each cabin a theme, we wanted to make each one an experience — a memorable space full of colour and texture.”
The design for each room started with a single item, playing on the owner’s love of tactile materials. A Yastik cushion, for instance, was the initial building block for the owner’s and VIP cabins on Joy . Hand-woven ikat fabric from Indonesia and Suzani textiles from central Asia informed other areas. “These materials tell their own stories using colour, weave and pattern. The story of these cushions seemed to fit perfectly with the client’s vision and the feel of what we were all aiming to achieve,” adds the designer.
His proudest achievement on Joy is the central cantilevered superyacht staircase , which winds up from the lower deck around a lift shaft. You ascend on hand-woven carpeted pads past windows, beautiful églomisé panels made by DKT Artworks and oak marquetry.
You emerge at Joy ’s bridge deck, which, apart from the gym, has an office that is treated to its own fold-down superyacht balcony , mirroring one on the starboard side. No hydraulics or electrics are used — “they have been developed to be operated manually, by simply pushing down”, says Carley.
Electrics and hydraulics are required, however, for the other openings on board Joy . Two sections of bulwark fold down pantograph-style, forward on the main deck, to release the tenders stored there. And the large transom door levers up, to create a shade for the bathing platform and to open up the superyacht beach club .
The other access to the beach club is via a set of bomb bay doors on the main deck. They reveal a cinema space, with beanbag chairs and a huge video wall made by VBH, which can be used to screen movies or play computer games. And in the teak floor — the owner’s star sign displayed in LEDs.
It’s Rowell’s favourite part of Joy . “The combination of bomb bay doors and pivoting transom door is very successful. The visual connection between decks, particularly when one considers having parents on the main deck and kids on the swim platform, really proved worthwhile. The geometry and engineering of these features is not easy, but the relatively compact lower deck beach club ‘den’ is immeasurably improved by this interaction.”
Feadship has kept everything squeak-free, as you’d expect. It’s a testament to Joy ’s build quality, too, that while underway, even with all that glass and those huge overhangs — features that terrify engineers tasked with keeping a yacht quiet — there is not a rattle to be heard.
In fact, the ship is almost eerily silent when running, even when weaving figures of eight in two metre seas for the photographer in the helicopter hovering above. “She is my first Feadship,” says the captain after the shoot. “I have been impressed with the overall build standard and attention to detail. Joy is very stable and quiet as a mouse underway.”
To stay out of the images, everyone on board is asked to hide away in Joy ’s main saloon. I sink into the sofa scattered with Holland & Sherry cushions to wait it out, as the skipper swings us left and right. It’s only a few seconds before I’m forcing down the urge to put my feet up on the custom coffee table. But the fact that I want to — feel irresistibly compelled to — tells you everything you need to know about Joy .
Joy is managed by Burgess with charters starting from €700,000 per week .

- The Feadship-family
Featuring a great wealth of exterior spaces and a contemporary classic interior, the 70-metre Joy is the first superyacht to feature an exterior design by Bannenberg & Rowell and the first Feadship with an interior by the architects at Studio Indigo. The result is an astonishing superyacht which truly meets the owner’s brief to ‘create something totally different to every other yacht.’
All Feadships are, of course, pure custom creations and the vast majority are built for experienced sailors. The Joy project, however, was predicated on a fresh perspective, as the client is completely new to the industry and has never owned a superyacht before. The first of many distinctive aspects to result from this approach is the radical exterior styling, which brought with it a raft of challenges for the yard in terms of construction, fairing and painting.

Motor or sail royal huisman’s project noir endeavors to turn the tide.

Project Noir, Royal Huisman's 81-meter performance sloop will be the world's tallest at 93 meters, ... [+] will also earn a spot in the top 10 largest sailing yachts in the world. Details are a bit sparse, but read about the released information here.
Imagine you are about to purchase a superyacht. Would you choose motor or sail? The numbers, according to The Superyacht Times 2023 The State of Yachting Market Report, heavily favor motor yachts. Of 5,500 superyachts over 30 meters in length and in service in 2023, the report states 85 percent were motor yachts and 15 percent were sailing yachts.
Regardless of the details in the power versus sail debate, one thing is clear: the lines between the sectors are blurring. Sailing yachts are becoming ever more chic, luxurious, and easy to sail. Power yachts are continually working toward sustainability with alternative propulsion methods and redefined materials. Dutch shipbuilder Royal Huisman is about to illustrate the best case yet for choosing sail over power , particularly if you want to enjoy both the journey and the destination.
Project Noir Will Be The World’s Tallest Sloop
Project 411, aka Project Noir, features a sloop rig rising to 93 meters. That’s 305 feet. For comparison, the Statue of Liberty is 92.99 meters. Big Ben is 96 meters. A Premier League football pitch is between 112 and 115 meters.
Average mast height is often calculated to be 1.3 x LOA, or length overall. Alternatively, another ratio suggests mast height plus sail area to righting moment as a better guide. Performance sloop Project Noir’s hull measures 81 meters in length. Whatever the math, Project Noir will have the tallest sloop rig around. Among the top 10 largest sailing yachts in the world, it will also be the fourth Royal Huisman to currently rank in that elite category.

Charlotte shooting 4 officers killed while serving warrant, wwe raw results winners and grades after wwe draft night 2, design details.
The experienced owner’s brief for Project Noir expressed the importance of speed, power, and responsive handling. As a result, Project Noir will sport a reverse bow that will extend the waterline, often specified for increased sailing speed. For the all-aluminum construction, auxiliary power will come from electric drives.
Expansive glass and folding platforms intend to deliver mesmerizing views. A flying bridge allows for enjoying the outdoor environment while underway. A reflection of its code name, Project Noir will sport dramatic black deck gear and windows. The yacht is sized to carry a 14-meter tender.
Naval architecture and exterior styling are in the hands of UK firm Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design . With more than 200 yacht designs to their credit, 55 of them superyachts, the group has delivered monohulls, catamarans, motor yachts, chase boats, and tenders, achieving a solid global reputation.
Interior design will display the work of Barcelona’s GCA Architects . Known for their design of hotels, island getaways, private homes, wineries, restaurants, banks, and of course, yachts, GCA states that they apply a vision for the future.
GCA designer Josep Muanpere Miret comments that Project Noir interiors will follow the contemporary style of the exterior, making use of woods, natural materials, and textures borrowed from nature, to exude luxury and comfort.
The integrated sailing system and rig will come from Vollenhove company Rondal , founded by Royal Huisman. Rondal’s mastery of the Out of Autoclave, OOA, approach is a way to create structurally sound superyacht sailing masts in a single, unified piece. The process has earned success through decades of installations using large prepreg curing ovens and thin carbon composite molds, paired with Rondal's experience and expertise.
The Apex 850 Concept Collaboration
While not connected to Project Noir in any way other than design/build genetics from Royal Huisman and Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design, the Concept Apex 850 is illustrative of this dream team capability. Perhaps some of the innovations embraced by the 85-meter Concept Apex 850, designed with a 107-meter air draft rig, might find their way into Project Noir.
Plans for the Concept Apex 250-square-meter owners’ apartment show it as full beam, with a private lounge, sauna, and walk-in wardrobe. An aft area with opening doors, massive floor-to-ceiling glass walls, and cinema is also drawn into the owners’ space.
McKean notes, “The sailing experience of Apex 850 will be sensational, with speeds in excess of wind speed in most conditions."
With regard to Project Noir, Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman acknowledges, “I am pleased and humbled that we can highlight Royal Huisman’s 140 th year of operation with the announcement of such a significant project.”
How many, if any, of the Apex 850 concept design elements will be embraced by Project Noir? And more importantly, how many motor yacht owners might be converted to sails by this type of expansive, luxurious, more sustainable sailing yacht?

Viking Yachts, family-owned-and-operated in New Jersey, has been building luxury sportfishing yachts for over four decades. A world leader in semi-custom fiberglass yacht production, Viking is dedicated to building some of the world’s finest high-end yachts. Viking has built over 4,000 yachts in the last 40 years and leads the yacht building industry in performance, innovation, luxury, and engineering.
Viking Yachts was founded by brothers Bob and Bill Healey in 1964 when they bought Peterson-Viking Builders, a small, struggling New Jersey builder of 37-foot wooden sportfishing boats. Those humble beginnings, of course, led to Viking Yachts, now a world leader in semi-custom fiberglass yacht production, with over 4,000 Viking sportfish and motor yachts delivered.
With Bob Healey still at the company helm as Chief Executive Officer and deal maker and Bill as company President, chief boatbuilder, and head of Viking Yacht's in-house design and engineering teams, this family-owned and managed business is thriving. Viking Yacht Company builds over 100 high-end sportfishing yachts from 45' to 82' each year. Viking Yachts' order sheet is full for the next 12 months, depending on the model, with sales limited only by production capacity.

Learn More About Viking And Find Your Next Boat
In 1964, Bill and Bob Healey founded what would become the dominant force in building premium sportfishing yachts - Viking Yachts. The Healey Brothers bought out Peterson Viking Builders and made it their own sportfishing and cruising yacht company. The Healey brothers are also founders of the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA), a non-profit organization that was formed in 1996 to promote sustainable fisheries and a healthy marine environment. Being in business this long, the team at Viking has weathered many storms including the years of the federal luxury tax in the 1990's and the Great Recession in 2008, yet Viking has continued to re-invest in the cutting-edge machinery that is used to build each boat, its factory, and its people. While other boat manufacturers had to significantly cut back or even go out of business, Viking's reputation one of the best built boats in the world and smart financial decisions allowed them to weather the storms and capture even more market share once things improved. With millions of dollars re-invested in recent years, Vikings latest models have continued to drive innovation in the industry where others may have fallen stagnant. While its Sportfish business has maintained consistent sales, Viking expanded its offerings by once again building luxury motor yachts. Built with the same materials and construction techniques as its sportfishing line, Viking's first model - the 75MY - was a hit at the boat show circuit when it debuted. Viking's new flagship of the motor yacht line, the 93MY, packs a significant amount of volume on board that is generally seen on yachts well over 100 feet.

The Viking Yachts factory is located on the Bass River in New Gretna, New Jersey and has the characteristics of a small city. Complete with its own water tower and medical center, the Viking headquarters employs hundreds of local craftsmen, factory workers, wood workers, and other positions to produce over 90% of every boat built right at the factory. Many employees are even second and third generation team members. This ability to control almost every aspect of the build, combined with the finest machinery available (including a $1 million five-axis profiler that creates foam plugs to build complex molds) results in an unbelievably quality yacht that is consistently produced at the same superior level.
The owner experience is where Viking really excels. Every aspect of a Viking Sportfish or Motor Yacht is designed and built with the experience in mind. For example, the cockpit of a Viking Convertible or Enclosed Bridge is an extremely important area as this is where the action happens when a Marlin is hooked. Not only has Viking equipped each angler with the very best in options from livewells, fish boxes, rod holders, but the quality of construction has allowed Viking to build larger beam vessels which creates more volume in the cockpit, allowing the crew to work around the angler without running into each other. In addition, Viking has designed what they call an observation mezzanine which is a comfortable, air-conditioned space in front of the cockpit for guests to watch the action as it unfolds. Viking has re-shaped what it means to own a Sportfishing Yacht and will soon re-define the motor yacht market as well. Let the experts at United Yacht Sales, who truly understand the current pre-owned Viking market, help you navigate the choices available to you today.

Air conditioning is also available on the command deck for those fishermen looking to escape the heat.
With close to 14 feet of beam grants the Viking 37 Billfish a great amount of room and an air-conditioned layout. Viking Yachts for Sale
Viking sportfish for sale.
Viking was started by brothers Bob and Bill Healey in 1964 when they bought Peterson-Viking Builders, a small New Jersey builder of 37-foot, wooden sportfishing boats. In 1971 the company built its first all-fiberglass model, the Viking 33 Convertible, and thefollowing fall the Viking 40 made its debut—a huge marketing success (over 400 were sold in the next 10 years) that established Viking as a leader in the pleasureboat industry. In 1987 the company moved into the large motor yacht market with the purchase of Gulfstar Yachts, a West Florida builder whose yachts were then considered among the most innovative in the industry. By 1990 Viking was offering a full line of high-end convertibles and mo tor yachts. The 1991-era recession, together with the ill-timed 10 percent luxury tax—whose repeal owed much to the efforts of Bob Healey—crippled Vikings production for a time. By 2003, Viking was back, building over 100 sportfishing yachts, 45' to 82', each year. Still family owned and operated, Viking has built over 4,000 yachts in the last 40 years.
