more 55 yacht

Over the years a number of yachts have been designed almost exclusively with the charter market in mind.

more55

You would expect a yacht that was built purely for the charter market to be built with internal volume in mind as the priority. Not so the More 55; although she certainly is roomy, boasting six cabins, performance has certainly not been overlooked. The boat is sharp as a wedge forward with a deep 2.7m keel promising a stiff, powerful yacht. The interior fit out also looks stylish and thoroughly modern.

More plans to build 10 yachts for its own charter fleet and will offer a slightly tweaked layout (presumably with fewer cabins) for private buyers at an attractive price.

More Boats 55

  • Description

General information

Accommodation, design characteristics.

The interiors have been designed taking care of each detail, looking at the best ergonomic layout to give to the owner a unique feeling, as well as the option of several interior layouts with up to 5 cabins plus crew cabin possible.

From the structural point of view, the More 55 is designed to be stiff and to withstand the natural loadings from the rig and keel. The hull has been laminated with an optimised lay-up including unidirectional and biaxial glass fibres. Different densities of foam core have been used in the different areas of the hull and deck to assure the proper balance between weight and stiffness, for example in the forward area, where there are high slamming loads, a high-density core has been used in combination with single skin laminate. Single skin laminates are also used in areas of through-hull fittings etc.

The central structure of the boat is dominated by a stainless steel frame sitting beneath the saloon sole which is designed to take the high loads from the mast, shrouds and keel and transfer them smoothly and efficiently to the hull. This frame is connected mechanically to the bulkheads. The remaining structure of the boat is made by longitudinal and transversal stiffeners laminated in a female mould with a combination of glass bi-axial end carbon unidirectional fibres, glued and tabbed to the hull.

All the bulkheads are made of plywood apart collision bulkheads which are located fore and aft, both of which are made of a composite material to offer a better resistance with less weight.

The T-fin keel is assembled with a cast iron fin and a lead bulb. The keel is then laminated in GRP to ensure accurate foil geometry. The appendages have been designed to have the best sailing performances with perfect manoeuvrability. The rudder is also supported by a stainless steel stock, and the rudder quadrant is easily accessible at deck level for increased safety and ease of maintenance.

Special features

Maurizio Cossutti designed the More Boats 55 the only way Italians know how to design – to be beautiful. The modern lines and elegant features are emphasised with vertical backward inclining of the bow. Both the exterior and the interior profit from aligned windows which give the exterior a sporty, somewhat mischievous look, and privacy with natural lighting to the interior.

Since the yacht was designed to accommodate comfortably the crew during leisure sailing, to offer enough eating and lounging area to 12 people, it had to offer also enough space in the cockpit for the crew participating in a regatta. The yacht has several versions, and the future owner can choose among the three general versions with additional features available upon request, all in terms of possible offers. To achieve so much space without adding to the height of the cabins and overall yacht appearance, it took a lot of skill and knowledge, which is the best description of the cooperation between More Boats and Cossutti Design.

More 55 opens a door to a new age in performance cruising. Designed by famous Maurizio Cossutti More 55 is an uncompromised beauty and luxurious elegance combined with the best features of a sporty yacht. With classic mast and gennaker specially reinforced and equipped for performance sailing, this boat is ideal for all those seeking adrenaline, but also for those looking for peaceful and luxurious family sailing. Innovative solutions, magnificent interiors and excellent performances of this impressive and powerful yacht are its best characteristics which sets it apart from all yachts in this range.

More 55 proves to be the perfect performance cruising yacht easily converted into a great pleasure yacht.

Combination of Italian design, Croatian shipbuilding tradition that dates far back to the 11th century and Swedish ocean racing knowledge, guarantee that you will have experience of a life time either taking part in a regatta with friends, or while experiencing some offshore ocean sailing, or just enjoying with family in pristine and warm waters.

When it comes to the interior the main drive was to create high quality classic interior with a modern touch.

Everything that you see inside the boat was selected and made with attention given to detail, quality and functionality. First and foremost it was important to create woodwork of the highest possible quality, made from real teak handpicked in Burma, dried for two years and then treated.

It blends together in a perfect harmony of colours and lines to make you feel like home. All furniture for More 55 is made by one of the best luxury yachts factories in the world, Bobic Yacht and Aircraft Interiors.

All furniture is additionally protected with two extra layers of varnish. Plywood is marine Okoume of the highest quality.

Floors are made from Alucore aluminium with wood looking finish laminate, which guarantees that you will have no moisture in future and your floors will be the same for many years to come. Highest quality hinges, door handles and locks. Cushions are made from nanotechnology in Aqua clean material.

3 Cabin layout

This layout is perfect for families with children. You will get a comfort, but also enough space to accommodate 6 to 8 people. Each cabin has its own ensuite toilette which gives you privacy and comfort. Big kitchen and saloon area will make your sailing perfect while you enjoy cooking fresh food or having fun in the saloon in the evenings. Outside you will have a big storage area or skippers cabin depending on your wishes. You can choose to have a crew cabin with heads forward or a larger sail locker.

4 Cabin Layout

4-cabin version is a good compromise between a family and charter boat. This version has 4 cabins and 4 toilettes, large kitchen and saloon area, and outside sail locker or skippers cabin.

5 Cabin layout

This is a pure charter version in which there are 5 inner cabins, 3 heads, large kitchen and saloon, plus skipper cabin or sail locker. If you want to have a boat as an investment, this is a perfect layout for you. It will provide a long charter life to your boat and long season.

The More 55 is characterised by a modern design and this reflected in the hull, appendages and deck layout as well as the sail plan which has been studied very carefully. The deck shows a great attention to the details; all the control lines have been hidden into the proper recess to give all the comforts of a flush deck.

Simply: More. 55. Yacht.

  • Sailing Yacht

When I was strolling the BOOT Duesseldorf boat show at the first day – the show wasn´t even open at this moment, the lights haven´t been switched on yet and it was quiet, peaceful, the walkways empty – I also came by a booth that was a bit hidden behind the large stand of Dehler Yachts. Somehow cramped in the last corner of the hall, two yachts were exhibited and one of them catched my imagination at an instant. I stumbled upon More Yachts and I said … wow!

more 55 yacht

I heard of the More Yachts Venture at some point but honestly wasn´t really interested that much so the surprise was even bigger when I walked around the grey hull of the More 55. What a beauty, I thought to myself, and beautiful she really is! The More 55 has been designed by renown designer Maurizio Cossutti back in 2015 but she looks incredible and is far away from being dated (which I sadly enough cannot say from one of my all-time favourites, the Dehöer 46). I instantly fell in love with her lines.

more 55 yacht

The hull is very, VERY flat compared to modern day cruisers with a high freeboard. She has a beautiful slight, almost not noticeable sheerline, an even flatter superstructure on deck, integrated bowsprit and very exciting lines – no matter where your eyes hit her. The sleek portholes in her hull are a concession to the contemporary trend but they appear this thin that I am curious if there´s light coming through at all. The one and only thing I disliked about her design had been the trim strips and the type designation on the hull which to my eyes appeared a bit too big, a bit too much. But the rest … just candy for the eyes!

More 55: Design by Maruzio Cossutti

After another day of the show concluded and so did my work day I jumped over to the stand again and asked for permission to board the boat. I was so curious to see her interior. More Yachts was founded by the Croatian Einar Haldin, then boss of More Charter, a charter company, who was unsatisfied with then available charter-boats. He wanted a boat suitable for charter on the one hand but capable of all-out regatta racing and high performance-sailing on the other. So he decided to design and build his own boat. In collaboration with Maurizio Cossutti and a Croatian yard the More 55 (and now the More 40) was born.

more 55 yacht

On the outside I first took a look at the superstructure. The windows are sleek, black and racy. They imply speed and a modern, aggressive look. No wonder, Cossutti designed the More 55 with modern TP 52-racing boats in mind. I particularly liked the cat-like split window with a kind of a-column to the aft. Very racy. Walking on deck I instantly noticed the strong built – under my feet I didn´t felt the “GRPish” budging.

more 55 yacht

The cockpit is huge. There are two steering wheels on massive (but slim) pillars. Winches and thus the layout of the lines is traditional so that this boat can be raced by a crew where each member has it´s own dedicated post. Another detail against the common trend in cruiser design to have all the winches located back at the steering wheels to allow single handed sailing by the helmsman/skipper. This yacht is really meant to be sailed and raced by a dedicated sailing crew. A bit odd in my eyes the somewhat cheap looking cockpit table – but I think that´s a solution meant to be easily handled and then stowed away even more easy.

Worshipping a detail: Teak on the More 55 Yacht

What was hitting my eyes instantaneously was the incredible effort that went into Teak decking. The quality of the built is enormous and very rarely seen these days on production cruising boats. Normally you would see a base plate (plywood or harder wood) with Teak batten glued to the base and then the whole thing glued to the GRP deck. Not with the More 55: Here I noticed very nicely crafted Teak batten arranged in the classic way with complete embrasures – no matter where I looked, the Teak decking had been mounted very, very accurate and stunningly beautiful.

more 55 yacht

Also, the thickness of the material is far above average. Whereas you get a 3 or 4 millimetre Teak scantling, on the More 55 this looks like 5 or even 6 millimetres. Look at the details around the steering posts and on all the hatches and covers: There´s a lot of effort going on here and the proud owner (or charter guest) on a More 55 will have eye-candy for shore while staying in the cockpit. I was excited to see this.

more 55 yacht

Even on the far end of the hull´s freeboard it was astonishing to see that the yard was putting so much effort in applying the Teak decking with a classic embrasure. The caulking was as accurate as one can make it and I am sure the owners will have a long time to admire this fine piece of craftsmanship because also due to the material thickness the Teak decking of the More 55 yacht can be refurbished and even sanded to a fresh new shiny surface quality many, many times over again.

more 55 yacht

My heart – wanting to go down below deck I hesitated when I saw the two folding doors and the big slide hatch of the entryway. Almost classic: Thick, really thick massive Teak-made doors, what a beauty! So simply but plain and thus beautiful. Not the common plastic doors, even here for this otherwise regarded unimportant detail the designers put so much effort in creating something beautiful here. You won´t get a door like this on modern day cruisers. The smile on my face didn´t go away all the time being aboard this fine vessel.

Capturing one´s Mind: More 55 Interior Design

Down below the smile grew even brighter. Maurizio Cossutti was doing magic things here, I noticed. And when there might have been even a slight hesitation whether a Croatian yard could really build a high quality boat, aboard the More 55 these doubts are rendered irrelevant at an instant. The interior just blows your mind.

more 55 yacht

The saloon is very wide – well, this is a 55 feet yacht and has plenty of room of course. But the allocation of the elements like galley (a classic longitudinal galley at starboard side), the lounge area with a large U-sofa and a single stool, the navigation station with the chart table is done with caution: On the one hand there´s enough space left to create a lofty feeling, on the other hand the things are arranged in a way that one gets to grab a handle from every single point in the room to have a safe stand even in harsh weather conditions.

more 55 yacht

The chart table! What a beauty again! You know that I have a passion for chart tables and I give credit to all yachts and yards which refrain from making these small, iPad-sized tiny flding tables cramped somewhere in the boat on the oddest places more as an excuse than as a real working place. The chart table on the More 55 is a full fledged big sized working station for a real skipper doing real chartwork and stuff. The joinery is – like the woodworks in the boat itself – done with exceptional quality and precision.

more 55 yacht

I admired the massive joinery of the chart table. The edges, although appearing to adhere to the general trend of straight, edgy lines, are actually rounded to prevent bruises when got hit by a body in rough seas. There are more than enough shelves and cases to stow away pencils, papers and books. The main switch panel is huge, there is also a large wooden blank left to mount additional equipment – something also rarely seen on modern cruisers these days.

more 55 yacht

The galley is pure joy. Although I must admit that I personally prefer the classic L-galleys because I don´t like to look at the dishes when seated on the sofa, this galley is made again with an incredible emphasis on design. Just look at the wooden panels: The whole galley as well as the bulkhead and all other parts are made with one continuous wooden texture. Amazing! The look this creates is just wonderful, just like sitting inside a tree trunk. What an enormous amount of craftsmanship and effort!

more 55 yacht

What wasn´t quite fitting this beautiful picture of course was the utilization of standard metal fittings but that´s, I guess, the concession to the undertaking of finding a good balance between uniqueness and high quality on the one hand and creating a product that can be successful in a very competitive market.

more 55 yacht

Speaking of details: A clever solution was the overhead grab handles of the More 55 yacht which had been integrated into the coach roof of the yacht all along the full length of the saloon to either sides: Again, massive Teak timber. I loved the aspect of retreating these handles into the roofing so that they also appear as a stylish detail. Cossutti came up with so many nice details here that I was crediting him all the time.

The Yacht´s Engine Room: A Masterpiece

“Wait for the engine room”, said the guy who was showing me around and opened the entryway that was folding up. Astonishing. The big 110 hP Yanmar Diesel engine was sitting on a more than solid looking base. All elements of maintenance like filters, levers for cooling sea water and stuff had been mounted well within effortless reach. Thick damping material to either sides of the engine room should guarantee smooth, noiseless running. I could spot the large generator in the back.

more 55 yacht

Everything was so tidy, so clean, so cleverly mounted and spotless assembled that the engine room beared more the character of a cabin than the classic cramped dirty place you normally get on a boat. As little space “wasted” for the engine. Not on the More 55 yacht: Even the lighting was so good that there was virtually no shade whatsoever, which is great for the skipper or the mechanic to work here.

more 55 yacht

More is so proud of this engine room: The employer told me that Yanmar took photographs of this arrangement of their product inside this yacht and put it in their brochures to show how an engine compartment should be looking like. And indeed, this quality of arrangement I haven´t seen since I sat down with Magnus Rassy in his HR 64 .

Cabins aboard the More 55

A quick dash to the cabins. You see, I am not so keen on judging a boat by the size and vastness of it´s cabin. For me, a cabin should provide enough space to find a good night´s sleep, should provide enough stowage for clothing and stuff, should also have an area where an adult can stand freely and get un/dressed without getting hit by the cabin all the time in rough seas and of course the berths should be safe in terms of waves. So, island beds are a thing for anchorage, that´s nothing for being underway in my eyes.

more 55 yacht

So I was stunned by the owner´s cabin in this More 55 yacht which – I must admit here – was specially made for the owner. But this is how it should be looking like: A full size bed reaching from one side to another. That´s a safe place to lay down no matter on which bow the boat is sailing. No chance of falling out whatsoever. On the other hand, that´s a huge area to find more than enough room for two adults (or more) to sleep. I would go for this option for sure and skip the island bed!

more 55 yacht

Same in the aft cabin: Plain design, no frills here. The woodworks is exceptional again and done with the same amount of effort and quality. Stowage is sufficient and – here it comes – the thin portholes may seem racy from the outside but won´t provide much of a view from inside the boat. It´s a mere supplier of natural light although I doubt that there will be much of it coming though. Nevertheless, it´s a nice design feature.

A powerful Performance Cruiser

The More 55 is a modern loft. The appearance of the boat is through and through modern, although Cossutti – which I really love – accomplishes the task of using classic wooden material in the interior (darker timber) but without making the boat appear dark. In contrast, the white and shiny leather and fabric on the cushion and some of the decorative panels create a light suffused atmosphere. A really luxurious ambiance. On the other hand, this yacht is a serious racer.

more 55 yacht

One sign for that is the stepped mast sitting right on the massive steel structure. On the boat shown here they had replaced one of the floor plates by plexiglass to show this structure. A rust free steel frame is mounted to the hull, taking on the loads of the shrouds, the mast and also of the keel of course. No doubt: This thing is meant to run at full speed. And fast it can run for sure!

The More 55 is simply a Dream Yacht.

I leave the boat and I am puzzled. This is my new role model when it comes to performance cruiser. The More 55 is an exceptional boat in so many aspects. It´s design is fresh and new even for a boat that has been designed almost three years ago. Apart from small details like the slightly too big signature at the stern side the boat looks just mind-blowingly awesome! It must be pure pleasure to see that flat thing running through the seas. It is exceptional as well for its emphasis on detail and the level of quality of the woodworks both outside and inside the yacht. Pure eye candy.

more 55 yacht

The boat´s price is also eye candy. With a starting price around 440.000 Euros ex VAT this 55 feet yacht is a very, very attractive alternative to the big established brands for sure. Again, given the level of craftsmanship this is really the thing. For me, the More 55 was the secret star of this year´s BOOT Duesseldorf and not a few of my colleagues where talking about the boat and asking around: “Have you already seen the More?” Now that I have seen her, I am excited as one can be. Hats off to More, the yard and Maurizio Cossutti.

more 55 yacht

And, by the way, the smaller sister, the More 40, appeared to be made of the same quality and sense for the right things. With a starting price of around 185.000 Euros ex VAT this boat is even more attractive in the bread and butter segment and poses in my view a serious threat to the competitors. Again, after leaving the stand, I was so compelled by these boats that I can´t wait to maybe one days be able to sail one of these. What a great boat!

Our first project for the new More Boats Shipyard comes to life in 2015 with the request to build a boat characterized by uncompromised beauty and luxurious elegance combined with the best features of a sporty yacht.

The More 55 was a new project for a new boatyard: when we met for the rst time with Milan and Silvia Mandic they had just decided to build by themselves a new 55 ft to add to the existing eet of More Charter boats. Few clear inputs: a fast and nice looking boat, with enough internal space for ve cabins, three toilets and an appropriate internal headroom for tall north European customers, who were already waiting for something that was not even on the paper. The added value of the project was Milan’s team: twenty years of boat management with knowledge of what to do or not to do to have a 100% reliable and easy maintainable boat, transferred to our of ce and to Leo Curin of Pulse Yacht Design, our partners in this adventure, as he would have been for the later Bavaria projects. The More 55 resulted erce and elegant: a new age in performance cruising, a boat for active sailing, appropriate for all those who are seeking adrenaline, but also for anyone who is looking for peaceful and luxurious family sailing. More Boat Yard provided an excellent manufacturing quality, one of the best ever seen in series production, with carefully executed vacuum infusion systems and strict weight’s control. A sturdy steel structures overlaminated and bolted to the composite part, and supports the rig and keel stresses. Moving to the interiors, our main drive was to create high quality classic interior with a modern touch. Everything was selected and made with attention to details, quality and functionality. First of all it was important to create woodwork of the highest possible quality, made from real teak handpicked in Burma, dried for two years and then treated; it blends together in a perfect harmony of colors and lines to make you feel like at home. All furniture is additionally protected with two extra layers of varnish. Plywood is marine okoume of the highest quality. Floors are made from Alucore aluminum with wood looking finish laminate, which guarantees that there won’t be moisture in the future and the floors will be the same for many years to come.

more 55 yacht

We wrapped up all this with a very modern hull shape with vertical and massive bow, and full, powerful sections up to stern. The yacht was designed to accommodate comfortably the crew during leisure sailing, to offer enough eating and lounging area to twelve people and it has also appropriate space in the cockpit for the crew participating in a regatta. The yacht has three possible layout version with three, four or ve cabins with a skippers place forward, but the future owner can also ask to have personalized solutions to better suit his requirements. To achieve so much space without adding to the height of the cabins and overall yacht appearance, it took a lot of skill and knowledge, which is the best description of the cooperation between More Boats and Cossutti Yacht Design. Big kitchen and saloon area make the sailing perfect while you enjoy cooking fresh food, or having fun in saloon in the evenings. Outside is possible to have a big storage area or skippers cabin.

A license is required if you attend to sail a boat on your own. Otherwise, if you and the people you’re sailing with don’t have a boat licence, hiring a skipper is always an option.

A security deposit is required for chartering a boat, just as with renting a car. The refundable deposit protects you and your fellow passengers against accidental damage and ensures that the terms of the contract are met.

The security deposit varies in size depending on the type and brand of  a boat. It will be returned to you after the vessel has been examined and deemed undamaged, if you opt to buy it instead of paying a one-time fee.

For your charter, we provide a variety of extra insurance choices.

1) Insurance for charter deposits – charter deposit insurance secures the security deposit in the event of a naval accident if the vessel is lost or damaged..

2) Cancellation insurance – protects you from financial losses if an emergency situation arises, such as a sudden serious illness, accident, or death.

3) Commercial and pleasure boat insurance – Covers against the bankruptcy of the charter company, as well as boating accidents that occur before or during the rental period. It also includes coverage in case the charter isn’t able to provide the boat chosen at booking.

Yacht For Charter Croatia provides a FULL REFUND if you cancel your reservation within 72 hours of making it. To make your choice simpler, we offer flexible financing options with minimal downpayment and multiple payments. We need payment in full when you book a charter beyond 30 days before departure. 70% of the total amount is refunded if cancellations are made less than 21 days before the check-in date. Please be advised that Yacht For Charter Croatia’s cancellation terms are subject to the terms of our charter partners’ own policies. Jeanneau Yachts 55 review: Thinking outside the box

  • Rupert Holmes
  • February 28, 2024

Interior accommodation has traditionally been what sells mainstream cruising yachts, but the Jeanneau Yachts 55 ‘monocat’ turns that thinking on its head

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

Boatbuilders rarely have the courage to launch a model that represents a radically different way of thinking. Instead, most new yachts are simply variations on established themes with incremental improvements that represent important evolutions over time.

And when testing boats it’s easy to gloss over what it’s like to spend time relaxing on board, whether in harbour or underway in lovely weather. Yet this is a critical factor in the enjoyment owners derive from their boats.

Even with the best natural ventilation, in tropical sun or when the outside temperature rises above 30˚C, the interior of any yacht gets uncomfortably hot. So why have monohull builders and designers continued to expend so much effort on optimising saloon and dining space below decks, rather than focussing on exterior socialising and relaxation spaces?

The Jeanneau Yachts 55 completely reimagines how the main living areas on a yacht intended for use in sunny climes should be configured. All key elements of the main saloon are effectively on deck, sheltered by a big sprayhood and hard top or bimini. It reflects how yachts are actually used, at the same time improving privacy in each of the sleeping cabins and in the owner’s quarters.

In a sense it merely recognises how many people use a boat with decent sun protection: maximising time spent in the cockpit.

While this is not the yard’s first foray into this concept of accommodation arrangement it’s the first model aimed at private owners. It draws on Jeanneau’s experience with the Sun Loft 47 of 2019, which was geared resolutely for the charter market. We got to put a pre production model of the Jeanneau Yachts 55 to the test in Spain last autumn.

Novel layout

The cockpit effectively extends a huge distance forward and has multiple different spaces for different purposes. Right aft is a full-beam flexible area with expansive sunbeds that convert to large tables, creating a space that easily rivals the aft cockpit of multihulls of a similar size. As with flybridge catamarans and motor yachts, cushions are a fast drying type made for use outdoors.

Immediately ahead of this area is the main control centre for the boat, with twin helm and winch stations. These have a pair of Harken electric winches each side, with one having a back-winding facility, and on the test boat all furling and reefing could be done electrically by one person.

The distinctive mainsheet arch is standard on all boats, whether or not the optional solid sprayhood and hard top are specified over the standard fabric components. This has the big benefit of keeping the sheet safely clear of the cockpit, however the standard arrangement doesn’t allow for fine control of sail shape.

Outboard of the wheels the side decks slope upwards towards the foredeck in a refinement of the ramp first seen on the Sun Odyssey 440 back in 2017. This arrangement works really well on the Jeanneau Yachts 55, giving easy step-free access to the foredeck. It also effectively creates a deep bulwark, with an extra high 36in rail outboard of the winches, making it a safe place for sail handling. There are also lovely deep rope bags here, though longer handrails on the coachroof sides for use when going forward would be beneficial.

The two well appointed ensuite guest cabins are immediately forward of the helm stations. These are accessed from on deck, below the shelter of the hard top, which provides more privacy at night than a conventional arrangement with quarter cabins accessed directly from the saloon. The port is the larger of the two, with more floor area and space for a compact two-seater sofa.

On the downside guests have to descend into the depths of the hull via steep steps, so there’s potential for these cabins to feel claustrophobic, access to the starboard cabin’s heads is awkward, and the galley can only be reached by climbing up into the cockpit, then back down the main companionway.

more 55 yacht

The arrangement is great for owner’s privacy, and fine if you have teenage kids, but won’t suit everyone, especially those with children under a certain age.

Ahead of the guest cabins, towards the front of the sprayhood, is a small four-person dinette/coffee table to starboard and a navstation to port.

Both are slightly raised to give a good all-round view and the dinette can be lowered to create yet another day bed. This also makes it a good space to take a nap on short-handed passages, when you might need to be available at short notice.

Equally the navstation is an ideal place from which to con the boat when on watch alone, when the dished seat will help you stay in place when heeled on port tack. It also makes a great place to work using a laptop, as long as the almost all-round view doesn’t prove too much of a distraction. If it does there’s a secluded desk/dressing table in the forward master cabin.

Outdoor living begins at the stern with sunbeds, loungers and dining tables that easily rivals many multihulls for space. Photo: Gilles Martin-Raget

Monocat sailing

What about sailing performance? Naval architect Philippe Briand has created a boat with relatively low freeboard and powerful hull sections, plus plenty of form stability that on paper ought to hold its own against other mainstream cruising yachts of similar size.

More often than not, the yachts provided for our tests have the optional deep keel married to a taller rig with a slab reefing mainsail that typically gives 20% or more extra sail area than standard. This enables us to get a good feel for the fundamental qualities of the hull design.

However, the Jeanneau Yachts 55 we tested had the 1.9m shoal draught keel, along with the standard size furling mainsail and self tacking jib, albeit with upgraded sailcloth.

At the same time, the test boat’s displacement was some 3.5 tonnes heavier than standard, thanks to the shoal keel (800kg), plus the solid sprayhood and hard top in place of the standard fabric sprayhood and bimini, a washer-drier, air conditioning and a diesel generator.

more 55 yacht

Raised dinette and navstation are forward of the mainsheet arch, under the sprayhood. Photo: Gilles Martin-Raget

It was difficult to make the furling main set well in the very light airs of my first day on board and, frustratingly, there was neither a Code 0 nor an asymmetric spinnaker on board. On the plus side, my experience is arguably a more realistic reflection of the configuration in which up to 90% of these boats will be ordered.

Many new designs impress with the way they sail in light airs – an important factor for summer cruising in Europe . However, this boat had very little feel or heel until the wind got above 7 knots, when we started making reasonable progress at just over five knots on a close reach, despite the restricted sail area. In only 4-5 knots of breeze we struggled to reach even three knots of boat speed, irrespective of wind angle.

Happily my second day on board produced 10-12 knots of breeze in which we made 5.5 knots close-hauled at a true wind angle of 55º, despite the boat being repeatedly slowed by a swell right on the bow. Bearing away with the true wind just aft of the beam, and that awkward swell on the quarter, we made a consistent 6-7 knots under main and jib.

The boat tracked well in these conditions, despite imperfectly set up steering: there was play, friction and vibration in the system, though we’re told these problems will be resolved on production boats.

Nevertheless, the helm stations are nicely configured, with big comfortable seats and large MFDs each side. There’s also excellent protection from sun, rain and spray, yet you can also steer sitting well outboard on the coaming to get a better view of the headsail luff, although the MFD and instruments are difficult to read from this position.

more 55 yacht

Dual helms, access to aft cabins and forward lounging area can all be under cover of the long bimini. Photo: Gilles Martin-Raget

Are the seating and sunbed arrangements aft viable when there’s more wind and sea? There was much discussion about this at the start of the European Yacht of the Year trials. I sailed with the sunbed on one side, and table with space to seat six to eight people on the other, an arrangement with obvious appeal at anchor or at a boat show.

With seven people on board, in a Force 3-4 breeze and uncomfortable swell, this area aft was favoured over the more sheltered and secure seating further forward, even when close-hauled. In these conditions it felt safe, though in rough weather and high angles of heel it would be a less inviting space, while the width of this area and its proximity to the transom would undoubtedly make it feel insecure.

Given the Jeanneau Yachts 55’s accent on outdoor living, along with Jeanneau’s emphasis that the main below decks accommodation is primarily for owner’s use, it’s surprising they didn’t create a more comprehensive outdoor galley, even if that would inevitably compromise other elements. Instead there’s an optional barbecue that swings out from under one of the aft seats, so you need to stand on the bathing platform to use it, plus an optional fridge drawer under a seat further forward.

Returning to port with a quartering swell the boat rolled enough to make you think why not buy a catamaran instead? There’s a multitude of answers to that question, of course. For example, for anyone who spends a lot of time in the Mediterranean at busy times of the year it’s usually much easier to find a visitor’s berth for a monohull, whether in a chic Ligurian marina or a bustling Greek town quay.

Of course multihull owners may counter that by pointing out that catamarans don’t have a monohull’s tendency to roll in an uncomfortable anchorage and you can often anchor off and dinghy ashore with a decent tender – but that’s not always feasible.

Designed for the owners

All the space on deck makes this feel in some ways like a much larger yacht than the overall length might suggest, so descending the companionway is a surprise as it feels small for a 55-footer. But that initial impression misunderstands the whole concept of this boat.

Unlike almost any other yacht, the idea is the main below deck spaces accessed via the companionway will be predominately the preserve of the owners. This highlights how much of a change of mindset is needed to accurately evaluate this boat.

To starboard is a very long and very well appointed galley, and a saloon/dining area with space for six people to port. There’s lots of room to move around here – proportions are those of a smart apartment – though the wide open expanse may present a challenge at sea in rough conditions.

more 55 yacht

Well appointed linear galley is to starboard. Photo: Gilles Martin-Raget

Double doors in the main bulkhead open onto a properly spacious full width owner’s cabin with a wonderfully open feel and the peninsula bed offset to port. To some extent the feeling of space comes at the expense of stowage volumes, but there’s an option to replace the vanity desk here with a big wardrobe, while retaining the small sofa to starboard.

There’s also an excellent almost full width head and shower right forward, but it’s surprising there’s no provision for an easily accessed day head in addition to the three ensuites.

Stowage on deck includes a huge sail locker forward that’s large enough to be fitted out as an optional skipper cabin. There’s also a big lazarette aft, measuring 2.1 x 1.5 x 0.35m, where you might otherwise expect to find a tender garage. This has access from on top, as well as from the bathing platform, making an excellent wet storage area for fenders, watersports toys and so on. There’s also a dedicated liferaft locker.

Optional telescopic davits have a capacity of more than 100kg, sufficient for an aluminium RIB of up to around 3.5m with a tiller-steered outboard. This is arguably a better option than a tender garage, which invariably severely limits the size of dinghy that can be carried without significantly reducing the volume available aft for accommodation.

more 55 yacht

Port side is the larger of the two guest cabins and has room for a small sofa. Photo: Gilles Martin-Raget

An optional retractable gangway to port means access to the water, or to a quay when berthed stern to, is available even when the tender is stowed on the davits and the central transom walkway is therefore not available. The pilot rams and steering gear are accessed through a hatch at the side of the lazarette that’s just wide enough to crawl through, before rotating yourself 90º to the right. This would make it very difficult to access at sea and some will find it difficult even in port.

The standard twin 380lt fresh water tanks are a decent size for a boat with only three double cabins and there’s a high capacity 36lt per minute water pump for near domestic levels of water pressure. However, the 230lt fuel tank is definitely on the small side for the 110hp engine. Engine, generator and other systems are installed in a tunnel between the guest cabins, accessed from cockpit hatches, and therefore nicely separated from the main interior accommodation.

Hull construction is vacuum infused polyester, with solid laminate in the keel area, while the matrix in the bilge that helps spread keel loads is glued in place. The standard of finish generally looks very neat and the interior joinery is well executed. However, integration of the optional hardtop elements with the mainsheet arch and optional solid windscreen are not as slick.

This means there’s a lack of clean lines and continuity in styling terms. From a distance it looks good, but close up there are too many changes of surface level to look really clean, tidy and stylish.

This model represents a big bet and a bold move for Jeanneau that effectively creates a new type of yacht for private owners. When I first saw it at Düsseldorf in January 2023 I was taken with the concept, and the obvious enthusiasm Philippe Briand and Ignacio Oliva-Velex of renowned interior designers Winch Design have for it. Of course the Jeanneau Yachts 55 won’t suit everyone, and there are many who wouldn’t consider this boat, but it has potential to be a good match for many others. Admittedly the price of the pre-production test boat we sailed was inflated thanks to a very long list of extras. However, there are ways in which it didn’t feel like a $1million yacht, even if some elements such as the owner’s cabin and the expansive seating/sunbed areas aft are very nicely executed. Nevertheless the core idea clearly works well and aspects of it can’t easily be replicated on a multihull. Jeanneau plans to build 15 boats each year, so doesn’t require a huge production run for it to be considered a success. Even though this part of the market tends to be very conservative, 17 Jeanneau Yacht 55s have already been sold and we can surely expect to see more production designs for private boat owners along similar lines in future.
