Lego™ Catamaran – 42105

Although there are only 400 parts in the Lego™ Technic set, this set is tall. Proportion and balance are very similar to a real catamaran with a huge mast. It has two hulls with daggerboards . Thanks to its hulls, different than most other Lego sets, this one can float, at least mostly.

You first build the center of the catamaran. You start by adding two levers for the front sail (the jib sail) and the back sail (the main sail). Later you build two rudders and attach them to the back of the hulls. Rudders are controlled using a single 12 tooth black gear which is connected to the rudders using two technic links.

You build right and left hulls sequentially, but if you are careful you can parallelize this step because the build is mostly symmetrical. You attach a red single-stud piece to the left hull and one green single-stud piece to the right hull. If you search “navigation lights” usage in vessels, you will see that this choice is not arbitrary . The red light indicates a vessel’s port (left) side and the green light indicates a vessel’s starboard (right) side. Also, this navigation lights convention is followed by aircraft and even satellites.

You using a lever, gear rack and and some gears you can adjust the height of daggerboard.

Later you build the mast and connect it to the body of the catamaran and finally, you attach the sails to the catamaran’s mast. Building the mast is straightforward, just pay attention to direction of two “Axle Connectors with Axle Holes”, they should face the same direction.

Completed model is very tall. In some of the photos, I have included a Lego friends figure for you to appreciate the size of this boat.

We haven’t build the B-Model. But from what we have seen from the pictures, sails are not used for B-model and for this reason, it is a lot smaller compared to the A-model. B-model can also float, it uses the same hulls.

Play Factors

• Although this set can float, Since it doesn’t have any motors and remote functionality, I don’t think this feature is very attractive. Since Lego motors and battery boxes are not sealed and heavy, motorizing this set isn’t practical. Also hulls are not water tight and sometimes water can sink in the hulls and can sink the boat. Don’t try it in a deep place, like a lake. You can buy a cheap RC boat for a lot less money and may have more fun. Or course it will not be as attractive as a Lego set for display purposes.
• If you use a stripe and blow with enough force, you can move this set in the water. This can be cool to try with your kids.
• There are two rudders on two hulls and both of them are simultaneously controlled by a black gear at the back.
• Angle of front and back sails can be adjusted independently by left and right levers. Sails can’t be folded, they are plastic.
• Each hull has a lever to raise and lower the daggerboards.

The Disney/LEGO partnership goes back a long way, and encompasses a wide variety of sets. Some of these are meant to appeal mostly for kids. Others are bigger and more complex builds meant for display rather than play, and can easily be appreciated by adults. In any case, here are the 10 best LEGO Disney sets that you can buy in 2024. To make this guide specific and helpful, we are classifying "LEGO Disney" as the sets inspired by the Walt Disney Animation Studios and Disney Parks.

Moana's Wayfinding Boat

Moana's Wayfinding Boat looks wooden and ornate. Its sail is covered with evocative Motunui art, and even the blankets for the two beds have tribal designs on them. It comes with two Minifigures— Moana and her mother Sina—and a dolphin animal buddy to keep them company.

If you don't have $400 lying around to buy the big, new castle, you might want to buy its little brother, which costs 1/10 as much. Similar to the new Hogwarts Castle , which is a miniature build of a much bigger, more expensive set, the Mini Disney Castle is impressive for its compactness, and for its ability to suggest a lot with a minimal amount of pieces..

IGN built this set for its launch, and although it's a bit smaller than you might have hoped, it's got the right price point at $60, and it's got some beautiful details in the living room space. Just manage your expectations—this is more a keepsake than a 'definitive edition'—and you'll be happy with what you get.

Walt Disney Tribute Camera

You build a vintage movie camera, and it comes with a film reel which contains LEGO-ized stills from Disney's classic and modern canon. It also includes five Minifigures: classic black-and-white Mickey Mouse, classic black-and-white Minnie Mouse, Dumbo, Bambi, and of course, Uncle Walt himself.

Brightly colored and extremely cute, this LEGO Stitch wears a Hawaiian shirt and comes with two accessories: a flower tucked behind its ear and an ice cream cone in its paw. Its ears are articulable, and even though the age range is 9+, an adult would have a great time building and displaying a set like this one.

Thanks to the high piece count, both the exterior and the interior of the cottage remain faithful to the movie that inspired it , and are perfect for staging classic scenes.

Disney Castle

• Price: $399.99

This is a massive model of Walt Disney World's Cinderella's Castle in Orlando, Florida, and it's been updated from its prior iteration . The latest set uses pink hued bricks, instead of gray or white ones, for its upper spires. This happened to the real castle in 2020, when the Disney Imagineers decided to give the castle a facelift ahead of its 50 anniversary. The set comes with eight Minifigures: Cinderella, Prince Charming, Snow White, Prince Florian, Princess Tiana, Prince Naveen, Rapunzel, and Flynn Ryder.

LEGO and Disney: A Perfect Match

LEGO and Disney are a terrific match, in the sense that both companies cast a wide, welcoming net. Disney is not in the business of making children' s e ntertainment ; Disney is in the business of making family entertainment . That distinction is crucial, because the implicit intent is for everyone, regardless of age or maturity, to enjoy Disney at the level they are cognitively able.

A small child might like the bright colors and funny characters. An older kid might like the subversion of expectations. And an adult might enjoy Disney as a piece of nostalgic Americana, through which they can revisit their childhoods. Disney is cross-generational, because it appeals to everyone through common, shared experiences.

What Disney or Pixar movie or series should get a big LEGO set next?

And LEGO, meanwhile, has nostalgia built into its very ethos. LEGO Reveals Massive Dungeons & Dragons Set 

Today, after months of rumors and speculation, LEGO (in partnership with Wizards of the Coast) revealed the first full look at the new Dungeons & Dragons-themed building set entitled Red Dragon’s Tale. The large 3,745-piece set is set to release on April 1 in LEGO stores and to those in the LEGO Insiders program. Everyone else can roll for initiative on snagging a set on April 4, for the price of $359.99.

Produced through the popular LEGO Ideas platform, where fans are able to submit their own build concepts that are then refined and produced as official sets, the final set includes a full dungeon and tower, a tavern, and six minifigures (including an Orc Rogue, Gnome Fighter, Elf Wizard, and Dwarf Cleric). Builders also get several iconic D&D monsters, including an owlbear, beholder, displacer beast, and, of course, the red dragon Cinderhowl, who acts as the centerpiece of the set.

Interestingly, LEGO is offering an actual D&D adventure book to LEGO Insiders as a free digital download or as a paperback book that can be purchased with 2,7000 Insider points. That same book will show up on D&D Beyond (Wizards of the Coast’s digital hub for D&D) complete with characters sheets and digital dice. Presumably, the idea is that you could play out the adventure with the included LEGO minifigs and monsters as the miniatures used on the table, which is a pretty slick way for dedicated players to capitalize on the completed build.

In addition to the larger set, LEGO also revealed plans for a full line of D&D-themed minifigures, launching in September 2024.

• Judging Phase – Our judges review the entries and choose the entries for the Fan Vote by the 30th of April, 2024.
• Voting Phase –  Fans will be invited to show their support for the designs, and the votes collected will decide the submission which will become a future LEGO Gift with Purchase set. Voting will run from the 30th of April, 2024 – 7th of May, 2024.
• Winners Announcement - We will share the results of the Fan Vote here on LEGO Ideas no later than the 16th of May, 2024!

How to Enter:

• Submissions may be in either physical bricks or by using a digital building tool such as Bricklink’s Studio . You’re welcome to use image editing tools, such as Photoshop, to create your images.
• Take up to five photos of your creation and submit them to the challenge. Make sure to show off all angles and any features or functions of your creation.
• Add a title and short description.
• Upload your entry to the challenge using the blue Submit Your Entry button on this page.

Acceptable entry content.

• Your entry model should be between 150 and 250 bricks  
• You must be the original creator of all creative work you submit (the model, images, photographs, description text, etc.) and you must have the exclusive right to submit your model to this LEGO Ideas challenge. • Entries must be new creations and not previously posted online or submitted to any other challenge.

• You’re welcome to use Minifigures in your entry, as long as they don’t contain copies or references to any other existing third-party work or creation or infringements of any third-party intellectual property right

• Sex, nudity, drugs, or smoking  
• Alcohol in any present-day situation  
• Swearing or profanity  
• Death, killing, blood, terrorism, horror, or torture

• Warfare or war vehicles in any modern or present-day situation, or national war memorials  
• Large or human-scale weapons or weapon replicas of any kind, including swords, knives, guns, sci-fi or fantasy blasters, etc.  
• Racism, bullying, or cruelty to real life animals  

Entry Quality Standards

• You may submit digital entries using  Bricklink’s Studio , which is free of charge to download. You are also welcome to create digital entries using third-party LEGO CAD software. 
• You may use photo editing software and add visual effects to photos of your entry.
• Entries containing photos that are too dark or blurry will be removed from the challenge. To ensure easy judging of your entry, we recommend taking pictures on a neutral background free from background clutter, with your model well framed.
• Please do not include people in pictures you submit. Photos containing people will be removed.
• Please do not overlay any text or logos onto your submitted images.  

House Rules

• Entries containing defamatory or degrading elements will not be eligible for the challenge.
• Any cheating or harassment of other participants will result in disqualification from the challenge.
• Your challenge entries and comments on challenge entries must follow the complete LEGO Ideas House Rules .

Submission Requirements 

In order to get your submission approved, your submission must include the following: 

• Photos of your build
• A description* 
• Entries may have tags*, if you wish

* - Submissions should have correct capitalization and not have any spelling mistakes. 

A panel of judges consisting of members of the LEGO Extended Line team, will choose a maximum of 15 submissions for the Fan Vote, based on:  

• Overall coolness and originality: 25%  
• Most inspired details: 25%  
• Relevance to challenge theme: 25%  
• Best use of LEGO elements: 25%  

These 15 entries will then be put forward to a fan vote, in which LEGO Ideas members can vote for their favorite entry. Members will have one vote, and one vote only. The vote will be open for one week, from the 30th of April, 2024 until 7th of May, 2024. Based on the community votes, there will be one Grand Prize winner and 2 Runner Up winners.

The Fine Print

• You must be at least 13 years of age to participate and enter.  
• You may submit multiple entries to the challenge, but only one entry per person will be considered when winners are selected. This means you cannot win as a semi-finalist and as the grand prize winner with two different entries.   
• Winners will be contacted on the email address associated with their LEGO ID account after the 7th of May, 2024. Winners will be announced on LEGO Ideas when all winners have returned the signed Winner’s Certification Documents. A winner who does not return their Winner’s Certification Document within one week (5 days) of receiving it will be disqualified, and a new winner will be selected.   
• Active participation by way of submissions of any kind to this challenge is not open to residents of Iran, North Korea, Myanmar/Burma, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Syria, Russia, or any other country which is subjected to sanctions and where prohibited or restricted by law, for as long as such sanctions remain in place. Submissions in active challenges by residents of Russia will unfortunately not be eligible for prizes as long as sanctions remain in place.
• If you are a resident of Ukraine or Belarus and are selected as a challenge winner, your prizes will be shipped at a later date once shipping resumes normal operation. 
• By entering the challenge, you agree to follow the rules on this Challenge Brief page and you agree to the LEGO Ideas  Terms of Service .

The $359.99 set launches April 1 for Lego Insiders, and April 3 for everyone else

Share All sharing options for: Lego’s first Dungeons & Dragons set arrives next month, has both a Dungeon and a Dragon

Following a number of rumors and an eventual leak, Lego has revealed its first collaboration with Dungeons & Dragons : a new set inspired by the classic tabletop game, just in time for its 50th anniversary. Officially titled the Lego Ideas Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale , Lego Insiders can pre-order the $359.99 set starting April 1 exclusively from the Lego Store, while everyone else can roll for initiative beginning April 4. Pre-orders placed before April 7 will also receive a complementary Lego Dungeons & Dragons Mimic Dice Box.

The 3,745-piece set is the result of a design submitted by Lucas Bolt through the Lego Ideas program that was approved back in Jan. The set features a riverside inn placed beside an ancient fortress complete with a watchtower and dungeon below. The Lego Design team iterated on Bolt’s original model (pictured below), adding a removable roof to the tavern and extra details to the crumbling tower and dungeon underneath.

In total, the set features six Lego Minifigs: an Orc Rogue, a Gnome Fighter, an Elf Wizard, a Dwarf Cleric, a Dragonborn Bard, and a Human Thief. A set featuring just the Minifigs will be available starting in the fall. However, this doesn’t count the impressive, brick-built monsters that are also included in the set. In addition to a trio of skeletons, you’ll also find a Beholder, an Owlbear, a Displacer Beast, a Mimic, a Gelatinous Cube, and a tiny pair of Myconid Sprouts. The highlight of the set, however, is the massive Cinderhowl Red Dragon perched on the stone wall of the fortress.

The set even features its own accompanying one-shot adventure, created in partnership with Wizards of the Coast and the Lego Group. The adventure is available for Lego Insiders as a free digital download or as a limited-run paperback for 2,700 Insider points. You can also find the adventure on D&D Beyond along with character sheets, digital dice, and more.
