The Aloa 29, a smart sailor cruiser

aloa 29 sailboat

The Aloa 29 is a 29-foot (8.70 m) sailboat designed by the Finot Conq Group and produced 320 units from 1972 to 1982. Habitable, it offers two cabins and a saloon that has nothing to envy the largest. Presentation.

Chloé Torterat

euros the discovery of an unknown sailboat

May 2021, Louis-Marie and two friends are looking for a boat to buy in co-ownership. If this is his first unit as an owner, Louis-Marie - a maintenance engineer in the military nautical industry - regularly maintains sailing boats for others: Edel 5, First 22, Oceanis 390euros

Via LeBonCoin, they chose a Sangria, an 8-meter sailboat produced by Jeanneau in the early 1970s. But it is finally another model suggested by the second-hand sales site that attracts their attention: an Aloa 29 negotiated for 5,500 euros that they renamed "Sans Pression".

"It's a 1975 Mediterranean-style sailboat, which I had never heard of. It is a discovery. The first visit pleasantly surprised me. The boat being stored in a dry yard, we were able to check the hull and even start the engine in boardeuros. In the end, this Aloa 29 model was more to everyone's liking. It is 36 years old and the hull is healthy. There is no trace of osmosis and I have not found any such problem on these models by searching the Internet", says Louis-Marie.

A closed cockpit and an attractive sail plan

The Aloa 29 has an overall length of 8.70 m for a beam of 3.10 m and a light weight of 3 tons. Its double hull with reserves of buoyancy allows it to enter the category of the sailing ships known as unsinkable. Its cast iron keel requires however a little maintenance . Its cockpit is closed with a simple rear swim ladder. Some have been modified to receive a skirt. There are two benches, with storage on the aft side and a large locker on the starboard side to store ropes or sails. The tiller is in the center. The sail plan euros original sloop rigging is composed of a 16 m2 mainsail , a furling genoa and a symmetrical spinnaker on spinnaker pole. A Yanmar engine of 18 hp was installed by a former owner to replace the original engine, less powerful.

"On the bad side, we dismasted at the end of August 2021 due to a negligent check of the chainplates and the age of the standing rigging. The boat is in a yard in La Seyne-sur-Mer to receive a used J92 mast that will replace the old one. We are also taking the opportunity to install an automatic reefing system from the cockpit", adds Louis-Marie.

On profite du cockpit entre amis

An interior design worthy of the greats

But it is its interior design that is of real interest, with a headroom of 1.80 m.

"Its layout could make some 30-footers green with envy. When you go inside, you don't feel like you're in a 29-footer with the way it's laid out. You can easily sleep 5 people and sail comfortably with 5 or 6 over several days", explains Louis-Marie.

There is a Breton bed in the front with a small toilet area and a closet. The table in the saloon slides down along the sponge to create a sleeping area for two people. Finally, a coffin berth on the port side can accommodate another person for the night, or even two small people depending on the owner. A sink unit and a double gas stove on gimbal equip the kitchen. Tanks of 100 L for the kitchen and 50 L for the toilet sink at the front allow autonomous navigation. A porthole on the back at the level of the coffin berth associated with the one at the front allows to create a good air current to avoid being too hot in the saloon or to eliminate condensation.

"Everything was in good condition, but our manic side made us do some work. The fridge was almost out of order. We replaced it with a refrigerated cooler that runs on 12 volts. We changed the lighting by LED to reduce the load on the batteries. We also changed the dies and two broken candlesticks. The problem is that they are screwed into the deck and we can no longer find this model. We had to reattach bases on the locations to install more common stanchions". Overall, inside, not much was changed. It was relatively clean. We found a first aid kit with vials of peppermint alcohol for pain and life jackets dating from 1980, laughs Louis-Marie.

Un intérieur bien aménagé

A project of offshore navigation

Based in Toulon, in the old dock, Louis-Marie was able to take advantage of the summer to take control of his Aloa 29. For the moment, he uses his boat mainly for coastal sailing, especially during weekends between Toulon and Porquerolles , often with a night at anchor . As soon as the boat will be equipped for offshore sailing, Louis-Marie has the project to cross to Corsica . The group of friends is also thinking about making the boat more maneuverable for solo sailing. They still need to change the old Raymarine ST1000 autopilot , which no longer works, and to equip it with at least one 100-watt solar panel for more autonomy in ocean cruising.

" We are in the phase of getting used to it and we are going to adapt it as we go along for the various and varied projects that we have. It is a boat that we will use regularly, especially in the evening, after work. It's an easy way to get some fresh air", says Louis-Marie.

L'Aloa 29 "Sans Pression" au mouillage

A marine behaviour in all conditions

From his first navigations, Louis-Marie has many positive points.

"It's a boat that behaves very well in light and heavy weather. It is quite safe in that sense. She has good abilities in light airs. With 6/7 knots of wind on a reach, we are making 6/7 knots. It's a great ratio. It's a very pleasant boat. A very good surprise", says Louis-Marie.

Nevertheless, the young man reproaches some defects, fortunately filled by his marine qualities.

"It's downwind. At first it's quite surprising. Especially when there's not much wind. It's a bit restrictive for people who don't have the sea legs concludes Louis-Marie.

Review of Aloa 29

Basic specs..

The Aloa 29 is equipped with a finn keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.65 - 1.75 meter (5.41 - 5.71 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with a Renault RC12D diesel engine.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 26 liters (6 US gallons, 5 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Aloa 29 is 2.17, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Aloa 29 is about 146 kg/cm, alternatively 817 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 146 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 817 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 15.62

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 25m 2 (269 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

THIS BOAT IS NOW SOLD- FOR OUR CURRENT LISTINGS PLEASE VISIT https://www.networkyachtbrokers.com/office-page/dartmouth/

This Aloa 29 was built in 1981 to a design by Group Finot, who designed her as a fast cruising yacht that also had good accommodation.  She can sleep five in two cabins.  The forecabin has a ‘V’ berth with infil to form a double berth with stowage under, in addition there is a long pilot berth aft of the galley area. The separate heads compartment is to starboard with the wash basin opposite.  ZORBA was fitted with a Jabasco marine toilet in 2008.

The  saloon has a seating area to starboard converting to a settee berth, the settee opposite has a trotter box forming a second berth with a central table between.  The galley is to port and is equipped with a two burner gas cooker , oven and grill, a stainless steel basin, a large coolbox and ample stowage.

To starboard is the full sized chart table with switch panel, instrumentation and further stowage areas.

In addition an eberspacher warm air heating system was fitted in 2007.  The saloon has recently been updated with cream upholstery which is complimented by black curtains.

ZORBA is powered by a Volvo Penta MD7a 13 hp engine which is sea water cooled and was checked two years ago.

This Aloa 29 is masthead rigged sloop with a slab reefing main (2013) and furling genoa (2013).  All controls lead back to cockpit for ease of sailing when short handed.  The decks have non slip surfaces edged with the addition of a distinctive black anodised aluminium toe rail.  The hull has been epoxy coated.

As she has been ashore for two years some TLC is needed to bring her back to her best.  Her deck needs re-painting and although her engine was checked last year a full service is recommended.

ZORBA will be lifted into the water in August 2017. If you are looking for a fun cruising yacht or club racer then this Aloa 29 is worth a look.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
