malta pleasure yacht registration

Fast & Easy Yacht Registration in Malta — Only €2,499.00.

Welcome to our website dedicated to everything related to yacht registration in Malta. Malta has created a registration process that is very easy for everyone to use.  When you are ready to register, as long as you have all the right documents, it should only take approximately 2 business days to complete.

You will receive a 6-month provisional registration in order to complete the documentation.  This might be a deletion certificate in which the previous owner states that the yacht is no longer registered in Malta.  As long as you can provide the proper documentation, the Maltese Registrar of Ships will issue a permanent registration to the new owner once the 6-month provisional registration has expired.  If you do not have all documentation, you will be given an additional 6-month extension to collect all needed documents.

yacht registration malta

Below are the documents which are required for your provisional application:

  • A Malta yacht registration application
  • A Declaration of Ownership
  • Keep in mind, you will have to provide an international tonnage certificate if your yacht is longer than 24 meters. If you only have a copy, that will be fine.
  • Any requested or required technical information must be provided.
  • If your yacht is properly equipped, you will need a radio license application as well.

You will be given a Certificate of Malta Registry once all steps have been completed. This certification is proof that your yacht is properly registered in Malta.

PRIVATE YACHT REGISTRATION

In order to register your yacht permanently under the Maltese flag, you must provide specific documents within six months from provisional registration.

COMMERCIAL YACHT REGISTRATION

The operation of commercially registered yachts for chartering purposes using a Maltese company (using a Maltese International Trading Company) is very tax advantageous.

VAT YACHT LEASE

Guidelines have been published regarding the effective use and enjoyment by a lessee of a pleasure boat within and outside EU territorial waters...

The Financial Advantages of Yacht Registration Malta

If you own a business which provides yachts for commercial use and generates an income from these yachts, you are entitled to an income tax exemption. Your exemption is based on the annual tonnage tax , which is calculated using the yearly registration fee of your yacht and its gross tonnage.

If you have a commercial yacht for the sole purpose of transporting passengers, your company will have a VAT exemption on all maintenance costs and supplies for the yacht. Also, if you earn an income from a chartering business, you will not be charged a VAT.

If your commercial yacht is not eligible for an income tax exemption, you might be able to claim an income tax rate that is less than 5%. If the commercial operations of the yacht resulted in a foreign income tax that had to be paid, you can use it as a credit to lower your Maltese income tax rate. Your rate might be as low as 0%.

SHIPPING & YACHTING SERVICES

Backed by our expertise, high level of service, our dedication as well as our contacts within the super yacht industry in Malta, CSB Group is uniquely able to offer an integrated service for our clients’ yachting requirements. As a one-stop shop, CSB Group is one of the Malta-based specialists in yacht services with the necessary expertise to handle a variety of services including the registration under the Malta Flag. Under the Malta Flag a yacht may be registered as a Private yacht or a Commercial yacht.

Yachting in Malta

Malta has, for years, been a maritime nation of repute. Its strategic location in the centre of the Mediterranean, natural harbours and extensive range of maritime services such as shipbuilding and repair, Freeport, bunkering, ship supplies and towage services have contributed to making Malta a leading maritime hub. The island’s location has given it great strategic importance and Malta is now recognised as being an entree-port to the EU.

Besides offering world-class berthing facilities to the superyacht industry, Malta offers yacht owners several attractive solutions. As a one-stop-shop, CSB Group, via their dedicated team can provide the required professional and dedicated assistance on temporary importation, onward supply relief, commercial yacht registration and VAT-efficient finance leasing structures to name a few.

Notably, there are two main types of yacht registrations under Maltese Law; one may either register their yacht as a pleasure yacht wherein the yacht could be used for personal reasons or for charters within Maltese territorial waters, or else one may alternatively register their yacht as a commercial yacht wherein the yacht could be used for commercial reasons including the option of sailing and chartering outside Malta’s territorial waters.

As of the end of December 2020, there were a total of 4630 yachts under the length of 24m registered under the Merchant Shipping Act. The number of Superyachts over 24m in length flying the Malta flag has increased from the previous year by 6.6% to a total of 859 Superyachts. Malta continues to maintain its position as a leader in ship and boat registration, as the largest register in Europe, as well as the 6th largest register in the world in terms of gross tonnage.

The benefits of registering a yacht under the Malta flag

  • Competitive yacht registration costs;
  • Low company formation and registration costs;
  • Attractive tax incentives to yachts and superyachts owners encouraging commercial operation;
  • No restrictions on the nationality of the master, officers and crew, serving on Maltese vessels;
  • No restrictions on the nationality of shareholders and directors of Maltese shipping companies;
  • No restrictions on the sale and mortgaging of Maltese registered yachts;
  • No trading restrictions
  • Straightforward Registration Process;
  • Serious and efficient maritime administration;
  • Flag state inspectorate to ensure adherence to international standards;
  • A sovereign state, member of the European Union with political, fiscal and social stability;
  • A dynamic registration with one of the largest ship registers in the world and very active in EU for and international organisation such as the IMO;
  • Easy access to decision-makers within the competent authorities, backed by a qualified and efficient team of technical officers available for urgent matters on a 24-hour basis.

Malta Yacht Registration Process

The CSB Group team of advisors provides full support throughout the whole process required to register a yacht in Malta.

1. Submission of Documents

The CSB Group team will assist you from start to finish to successfully obtain a permanent registration certificate smoothly and efficiently. As your advisors, we would act as an intermediary between yourself and Transport Malta to draft certain documents and submit all the documents required to complete the two-step registration process, consisting first in obtaining a Provisional Certificate of Malta Registry, valid for six (6) months, and subsequently a Permanent Certificate of Malta Registry.

2. Provisional Registration

After the necessary initial documentation is provided to Transport Malta, if the application for registration of a yacht under the Maltese flag is to the satisfaction of the authority, a Provisional Certificate of Malta Registry will be issued against payment of the relative fee, which shall be valid for a period of six months (subject to further renewal). The same Authority will immediately communicate to the indicated classification society requesting inspection with a view to the issue of the relative documentation (if required).

3. Permanent Registration

Once provisionally registered, for permanent registration to be obtained, we would assist in submitting any additional original documentation required by the Transport Malta during the term within which the yacht holds the provisional registration certificate.

In the event that the vessel has not been permanently registered after a year, registration must commence anew and the appropriate forms re-submitted and fees paid anew. Additional specific requirements may be imposed by the Transport Malta. Once obtained, the Permanent Certificate of Malta Registry is renewable on an annual basis from the date of initial registration at a fee, which we can also assist with as owner representative and/or resident agents.

Ancillary Yacht Services

Yacht financing.

Through a healthy working relationship with an independent and licensed European yacht leasing company, CSB Group is able to offer support in relation to obtaining a financial or operating lease for the purpose of completing the financing of yachts.

Tax Structuring & Administration

Structuring of tax efficient yacht owning framework.

Co-ordination of Temporary Importation Procedure

This procedure enables yacht owners, who are non-EU residents and whose yachts do not fly a Maltese flag, to stay within the EU and move freely within EU territorial waters for a period of 18 months.

During these 18 months, the yacht can move freely with no further customs formalities and should the boat be laid up for any period of time it is also possible to disregard such laid up period for the purpose of reckoning the 18-month period. After such period however, the yacht would need to be exported out of the EU. In such a procedure, customs duties or VAT are not paid on the value of the yacht.

Notably, should you opt to avail of this procedure, the Customs Authority in Malta will require the provision of a security or guarantee to cover the payment of the customs duties and VAT which would become due if the yacht does not leave EU territory.

Change in Registration Type with the Malta Flag

We can also assist in changing from the type of registration the yacht has been registered under the Malta Flag. Notably, changing from a commercial registration to a pleasure one would be a smoother transaction since there are less criteria to be satisfied for a yacht to be registered for private use. On the other hand, we may assist with change a pleasure registration to a commercial one, provided that the yacht is of 15 metres in length or more but not more than 3000 gross tonnes, does not carry cargo, carries not more than 12 passengers and is operated by the owner or body corporate owning the yacht for commercial use. In this regard, the Malta Commercial Yacht Registration considers the following classes of yachts

  • Yachts in commercial use of not less than 15 metres in length and not more than 24 metres;
  • Superyachts in commercial use of more than 24 metres in length and less than 500 gross tonnes; and
  • Superyachts in commercial use of more than 24 metres in length and 500 gross tonnes and over but less than 3000 gross tonnes.

Upon satisfaction of the above criteria, we will assist in the sorting out of all necessary elements for obtaining the commercial yacht certification, once the Commercial Certificate of Survey and the International Tonnage Certificate have been duly issued by the surveyor. This includes liaison with the registration and technical departments at Transport Malta in order to progress with the issuance of the Commercial Certificate of Registry. Simultaneously, we will also assist in liaison with the radio licencing department at Transport Malta to enquire whether anything would need updating considering the change in registration.

Yacht Certification

Sorting out of all necessary elements for commercial yacht certification.

Documentation Reviews

Evaluation of various documentation, including amongst others loan and security agreements, sale and purchase agreements, and mortgages..

Statutory Mortgage Deeds Procedures

Registration, amendments, transfer & discharge of contracts registered over Malta registered yachts.

Enforcement of Claims

Against Malta registered yachts or within Maltese territorial waters.

Crewing & Compliance Regulations

Handling on-going formalities with the relevant Maltese authorities. Importantly, commercial superyachts (more than 24 meters long) require a Minimum Safe Manning Certificate while commercial yachts (less than 24 meters long) are not required to obtain said certificate, but must adhere to the manning requirements found in the Commercial Yacht Code. Furthermore, foreign certificates in respect of the STCW 78 Convention need an endorsement from the local administration.

On another note, the crewing of Maltese yachts is extremely flexible as it does not impose restrictions on the nationality of the crew (including master and officers).

Deletion from Registry

When the owner of a Maltese registered ship or yacht wishes to effect a transfer to a foreign registry, an application to this effect would need to be sent to Transport Malta, accompanied by a number of documents as requested by the authority, which application we can assist with from start to finish to ensure a smooth process in the attainment of a Deletion Certificate from the Malta Registry.

Naturally, if you have any questions or clarifications please do not hesitate to contact us on  [email protected]  and should you seek to engage us to assist you with the above, we would be able to guide and advise you further with a step-by-step procedure on what would be required in terms of due diligence, fees and the overall process.

5 Reasons to register your Yacht(s) in Malta

malta yachts

Information was last updated in May 2021 in accordance with changes in the law.

When it comes to cruising in the Mediterranean Sea and visiting the charming little villages along the coast is doubtless a dream of all yacht lovers where a yacht owner or seller will guide you that there are more to owning a yacht than what meets the eye. The next step after acquiring your yacht will be to register the vessel under a flag of a preferred jurisdiction. As a yacht owner, it is in your best interest to choose a jurisdiction which is fiscally competitive and highly accessible, yet reputable.

Malta has also developed a very strong legal and regulatory platform that has enabled the Malta flag to become a reputable international ship register which is now established as one of the largest in the world.

Income Tax Exemptions

  • A shipping organisation is exempt from tax on any income derived from shipping activities and any income or gains derived from the sale or other transfer of a tonnage tax ship or from the disposal of any rights to acquire a ship which when delivered or completed would qualify as a tonnage tax ship. “Shipping activities” comprises the international carriage of goods or passengers by sea or the provision of other services to or by a ship as may be ancillary thereto or associated therewith including the ownership, chartering or any other operation of a ship and includes also ship management activities of a ship manager.
  • Any gains arising upon the liquidation, redemption, cancellation, or any other disposal of shares, securities or any other interest, including goodwill, held in any licensed shipping organisation owning, operating, administering or managing a tonnage tax ship while she was a tonnage tax ship are exempt from tax in Malta.
  • No Malta tax is charged upon any payments of interest or other income in relation to the financing of the operations of shipping organisations or the financing of any tonnage tax ship.
  • No tax is chargeable upon dividends distributed by a shipping organisation to its shareholders, out of profits derived from shipping activities.

VAT-Efficient Finance Leasing Structure

In March 2020, the Commissioner for Revenue issued guidelines in relation to  VAT treatment of pleasure yacht leasing to better reflect the EU’s development and practices. The updated guidelines offer yacht owners the possibility of setting up attractive operational lease models, resulting in cash flow advantages and overall VAT optimization.

The guidelines are based on the principle of ‘use and enjoyment’ , whereby Maltese VAT at the standard rate of 18 per cent is charged on the portion of the lease covering the actual use and enjoyment of the yacht within EU waters , whereas no VAT is applicable when the yacht is effectively used and enjoyed within non-EU or international waters. The application of such principle, therefore, implies that the overall VAT incidence shall depend on the whereabouts of the yacht.

The lessor of a pleasure boat shall calculate the actual effective use and enjoyment by the lessee of the pleasure boat outside EU waters when it is possible to identify the place of effective use and enjoyment outside EU waters. For the purpose of such calculation, the lessor shall utilise such documentary and/or technological data (including logs retained by the master of the pleasure boat as well as any GPS/AIS data) as the lessor can reasonably obtain from the lessee.

In order to apply such VAT treatment on the actual use and enjoyment of the yacht, several general conditions and anti-abuse measures need to be satisfied, including:

  • Lessor must be a shipping company registered for VAT purposes in Malta;
  • Lessee must be a non-taxable person; in other words, the yacht must be used by the lessee for non-business purposes;
  • A yacht leasing agreement must be entered into between the lessor and the lessee, which must be for more than 90 days and which agreement must be at arm’s length and presented to the VAT Department;
  • Written approval on the application of the effective use and enjoyment principle must be obtained from the VAT Department;

VAT Treatment of Short-term Charters

Primarily a short-term charter is a charter for not more than 90 days, where a yacht is chartered for leisure purposes. In such case, the percentage of the lease which is deemed to be held in EU waters is calculated according to the size of the yacht follows;

Registration Procedure

Any type of marine vessel, be it large cruise lines, supertankers or private yachts may be registered in Malta. Yachts, depending on their intended use, can be registered under the Maltese flag, as private pleasure yachts or commercial yachts.

Visit our Yacht registration page for a detailed description of the procedure for vessel registration under the Malta flag.

Eligibility for registration

All types of vessels, from pleasure yachts to oil rigs, including vessels under construction, may be registered, provided that, inter alia, they are wholly owned by legally constituted corporate bodies or entities irrespective of nationality, or by European Union citizens.

The formation of a Maltese company is a straightforward operation as there are no nationality requirements as to both the shareholders and directors.

As a rule, trading ships of 25 years and over are not registered although in certain circumstances this may be considered.

Ships of 15 years and over are required to undergo successfully an authorized flag State inspection prior to provisional registration.

Ships of 10 years and over but under 15 years are required to undergo successfully an inspection by an authorized flag State inspector before or within one month of provisional registration.

Benefits of flying a Maltese Flag

Once successfully registered under the Malta flag, a yacht can also benefit from the excellent international repute of the flag , which is further enhanced by Malta’s membership within the European Union.

  • Yachts may be registered on behalf of legally constituted corporate bodies or entities irrespective of nationality.
  • Twenty-four hour, seven days a week service in response to urgent matters.
  • Low company formation, ship registration and tonnage tax costs.
  • Maltese law provides for the registration of yachts that are being built or equipped.
  • Attractive tax incentives to yachts and superyachts owners encouraging commercial operation.
  • No restrictions on the sale or mortgaging of Maltese registered yachts and superyachts.
  • A dynamic registration with one of the largest ship registers in the world and very active in EU for and international organization such as the IMO.
  • A sovereign state, member of the European Union with political, fiscal and social stability.
  • The registration of a body corporate in Malta to own or operate a ship is a relatively straightforward operation and Maltese ship-owning companies operate in a relatively restriction-free environment. For example:
  • There are no trading restrictions and there is preferential treatment to Maltese ships in certain ports.
  • There is a complete tax exemption to owners, charterers, and financiers of Maltese or Community (including EEA) ships of over 1,000 net tons (exempted ships).
  • Furthermore, no tax is payable on dividends paid to the shareholders.

SMM Group focuses its expertise for any Yacht owner to obtain a Maltese flag hassle-free and by providing all supported legal services through and fort.

Yacht Registration in Malta

Malta is a flag of choice in the Superyacht sector for yacht owners looking to register a yacht in the EU. The jurisdiction holds a prestigious global reputation in yachting, which is borne out its rich maritime history. Malta offers a strategic location in the centre of Europe, which has become a known entrée-port for many yachts seeking to sail in the Mediterranean.

Malta has set global standards for excellent ship management, listed on both the Paris MOU White List and Tokyo MOU, which acts as a spectrum for exceptional flag quality. A yacht granted Maltese status receives preferred treatment, granting a smooth sailing through various port charges and taxes due the bilateral agreements Malta holds with multiple foreign governments.

In addition to the country’s naturally idyllic coastline and protected harbours, Malta has heavily invested into its marine infrastructure with several luxury marinas that offer world class birthing facilities. It has also developed its superyacht sector with an extensive amount of quality maritime services, including shipbuilding, refit, bunkering and towage services. As a sovereign state and member of the European Union, Malta also provides yacht owners with political and economic stability in the protection of their assets.

Since the 1970’s Malta has held one of the largest ship registers in Europe, which in the last five years doubled in the number of super yachts that measure over 24 metres. In addition to its geographic location, a key factor that attracts new yacht registration is the reputable environment. Maltese yachts are protected by the jurisdictions robust maritime regulation and legislation and its maritime services are supported by a professional corporate sector that provide exceptional expertise in the relevant structures and regimes available. A recognised financial centre, yacht owners will receive an exceptional standard of service in all aspects of registering a yacht, including bespoke structuring in the implementation of an ownership structure, VAT registration, compliance and on-going administration.

In addition to the low registration costs and tonnage tax costs, Malta’s competitive fiscal landscape is another competitive advantage that places it as an efficient jurisdiction for yacht owners registering in the EU. Commercial vessels registered in Malta will receive VAT exemption on supplies, fuelling and general maintenance costs.

Maltese Yacht Registration Regimes

There are two different types of regimes available to register under, they each hold different requirements and opportunities.

Commercial Yacht Registration

A yacht that measures over 15 meters in length intended for commercial use can register under the commercial regime. The yacht must not carry more than 12 passengers or cargo, and it has to be operated by the owner / owning entity.

If the client wishes to register the boat commercially, there are no restrictions on the nationality of the captain or the crew when they charter the boat.

Pleasure Yacht Registration

A yacht intended for private use, which is identified as not engaged in trade and for the sole purpose of the owner, can be imported through Malta under a pleasure yacht registration. This regime is only available to yachts that measure 6 meters or more in length.

Who can register a yacht in Malta?

Depending on the client’s goals, whether it be for personal use or commercial use, we have been assisting clients with ownership structures and yacht registration since 2004.

There are no restrictions on nationality to sail under a Maltese flag. Maltese yacht registration is available to Maltese residents, EU citizens, Maltese or EU Entities and Non-EU entities (that appoint a registered agent in Malta). Malta’s flexible entry requirements make it a favourable option for many yacht owners.

There are no restrictions on nationality when registering a yacht through a Maltese entity; this structure can be set up by the Affinity team in Malta. We assist yacht owners with the complete process of registering a yacht, with a dedicated member of our yachting team who will initially provide the client bespoke consultancy to create the most suitable strategy to meet the client’s goals.

When on-boarding the client, we request for identification and other KYC documents to ensure that the individual meets our compliance measures, this is to verify that they are who they say they are and their source of wealth is legitimate.

Depending on the individual client circumstances, we work closely with the client to create an efficient solution.  Whether it be

From here, we will begin collating the relevant documents to begin the provisional registration stage.

The Registration Process

Malta provides a very efficient yacht registration process which is handled by a dedicated corporate service provider and responsive regulator.

A provisional registration of six months is placed on the yacht, whereby all documentation must be collected and verified by the Authority of Transport Malta to approve permanent registration. The documentation required to begin the provisional registration includes a completed application of registration, the bill of sale, proof of ownership, a survey certificate and compliance with commercial yacht code for operational procedure. Yachts that measure over 24 meters will need to complete an application for Minimum Safe Manning Certificate.

Once the documents are approved and the initial registration fees, plus annual tonnage tax is paid, the yacht will receive a provisional registration certificate whilst it undergoes the permanent registration process.

Malta’s Culture

Malta holds a unique culture which has been formed over thousands of years through a mix of various rulers, including the Phoenicians, the Romans, the French and the English. With this, Malta has developed a rich and diverse history which shows in its many traditions and beliefs, whilst it has retained much of its own.

A key part of Malta’s modern-day culture is the Catholic religion, the Island boasts 359 churches, including four beautiful grand cathedrals, with some dating back to Roman times and others considered some of the greatest in the world. These historic buildings have been carefully preserved which pays homage to the various religions that have lived there throughout the centuries.

Malta’s Environment

The Maltese coastline truly is spectacular, the Island’s mix of geology has formed various beautiful destinations to explore. There are stretches of long sandy beaches at the north of the Island where you can spend the day relaxing at Mellieha Bay, Ghajn Tuffieha or Golden Bay.

Nice Boat Tour, but not too spectacular

We took this boat tour on the Moscow River. It was supposed to last 90 minutes, stopped after 75. Nice view from the River side, but nothing spectacular. Main reason we enjoyed it because of the cooling it offered from the heat in town.

Dear EverardvK, Thank you for your feedback! We will be happy to welcome you back on our boat tours. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

It is a set up. The ticket says it take you from the center to Vorobyovyi Gori, and it is 1.5 hours tour. It is a lie. It takes you from Ustyinskiy Bridge to Krimskiy bridge half an hour each way and then you could go almost as many times as you want but there is no fum. Doe not worth it. Very dangerous boarding set up and uncomfortable chairs.

Dear Inna B, We were very upset to learn that you did not like the Snegiri boat tour. The actual schedule and route of the tour are published on the site and we are recommend to check it before departure. Snegiri boat it is a modern comfortable boat with different types of chairs. You can also choose a comfortable lounge zone with sofa on a main floor. The crew is highly professional and a Snegiri boat is absolutely safety. We hope to be able to welcome you back with us to have a chance to change your impressions! Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

We picked up this boat near the Bolshoy bridge. The boat ride is an hour and half. The fist half an hour we saw St Basil's Cathedral, the Kremlin, Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and Monument to Peter the Great. Make sure to sit on the right side of the boat for great views during the first half hour. The boat then turns around and docks twice near Gorky Park. Make sure to sit on the left side. I didn't like that this boat docked twice since your wasting your time. However it is nice if your trying to get off at Gorky park. The boat has light snacks such as chips and ice cream. However they do not have original Lays chips as shown on the logo. There is no guide to give you information and the staff isn't very friendly. Overall we had an ok time. We would have liked a guide and no stops.

Dear Maria O, Our sincere thank you for choosing our cruises and it is indeed a pleasure to know that you have enjoyed your stay with us. We hope to be able to welcome you back with us again when your next return to Moscow, Russia. Warm regards, Rivertickets.ru

With the affordable rates for the cruise The Moscow Boat Tours is one activity I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Moscow as you have a chance to go around Moscow's Central Business. The View of St Basil's Cathedral and the Red Square is magnificient especially at sunset.

Dear winjim002, Thank you for sharing your lovely comments with us. We are delighted that you have thoroughly enjoyed your cruise. We look forward to welcome you back! Best reguards, Rivertickets.ru

I joined the river palace boat which started at 8pm. The view was so nice and the atmosphere was romantic. You can spend some quality time there with your love one. However, the english of the staffs were not quite good so you better do research first.

malta pleasure yacht registration

Dear waishanlai, Thank you for sharing your lovely comments with us and most of all for giving us a 5 Star! We hope to be able to welcome you back with us again when your next return to Moscow, Russia. Warm regards, Rivertickets.ru

We boarded the Radisson cruise boat at 9pm at Gorky Park for a 2.5 hours dinner cruise. The boat was less than half full and we got a nice table for three near the bow. At first the service was slow but soon picked up once we had established rapport with Olga the waitperson. The food was very good and if you like a fish dish I would recommend it together with baked vegetables. We didn't buy wine as I feel restaurants generally charge too much for it in Moscow. Although the weather turned wet we got some great shots of the Moscow lights and would definitely recommend this cruise. I think opinions on the price you pay depend on where you come from and what your exchange rate is. For us from Australia and the US the price seemed reasonable compared to what you would pay for the same thing in say Boston or Sydney.

Dear cogduo, Our sincere thank you for choosing our cruises and it is indeed a pleasure to know that you have enjoyed your stay with us. We also wish to thank you for the 5 star rating accorded to us and the wonderful and positive feedback which will motivate us in striving towards continuous improvement in moving forward. We hope to be able to welcome you back with us again when your next return to Moscow, Russia. Warm regards, Rivertickets.ru

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
