Luxury yacht ties up in St George

A luxury superyacht has docked in St George for an extended visit.

Jamaica Bay , built in 2010 by German company Nobiskrug , arrived on May 27 from Palm Beach, Florida, and is scheduled to leave on July 7.

A spokesman for Bermuda Yacht Services, the agent for the vessel, registered in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific, said Jamaica Bay had travelled to Bermuda to refuel in the past and that it was a good sign the owner had decided to make an extended stay.

He added: “This time, the owners came to stay on board for a while as it’s a safe place to come to in terms of Covid-19.

“We had a good year in 2020 because no one knew where else to go – we had quite a few large yachts come here.

“It’s about normal now as things are opening up around the world. More have gone to the Med this year.”

The spokesman dismissed rumours that the 59.5 metre or 195ft yacht, docked at Ordnance Island, was owned by superstars Beyoncé and Jay-Z.

He said: “That was a stupid rumour started in the UK – it is not them.

“It’s a great discussion point for the owner and captain. The yacht has had the same owner since the beginning of its life.”

The Belfast Telegraph in Northern Ireland reported in 2016 when Jamaica Bay was docked in the city: “Rumours were rife that Beyonce and her rapper husband Jay-Z were behind the smoked glass windows of the 1,100-tonne vessel.”

Nobiskrug said the boat was “floating proof that a classic appearance and a modern interior do not have to be contradictions”.

It added the octagonal jacuzzi on the upper deck “beckons with spectacular views”.

The high-profile arrest of former Trump advisor Steve Bannon took place Thursday aboard a superyacht owned by a Chinese entrepreneur wanted in Beijing. The 151-foot Lady May , owned by Guo Wengui, was boarded by the U.S. Coast Guard, special agents from the United States attorney’s office in Manhattan and federal postal inspectors around 7 a.m. Thursday morning.

Hours later, Bannon pleaded not guilty to charges that he and others had siphoned millions of dollars from an online fundraising effort called “We Build the Wall,” a private group whose stated goal was to raise money for a U.S. border wall with Mexico. Bannon was accused of taking about $1 million for personal expenses. He was later released on $5 million bail.

Vacationers noticed the superyacht anchored offshore in Westbrook, Connecticut. Yesterday afternoon, many binoculars were in evidence on the beach, scoping out Lady May , which later departed for Manhattan. “I never saw such a big boat,” Catherine Bue-Hepner told the local newspaper, The Day . “When the owner of the cottage came by, he said it was Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio. You figured it had to be somebody big.”

Instead, it was Wengui and Bannon. Wengui, an exiled Chinese billionaire , has business ties to Bannon. He was not arrested yesterday, but there are warrants out for his arrest in Beijing, where authorities have accused Wengui of crimes including bribery, kidnapping, money laundering, fraud and rape. He fled to the U.S. in late 2014 and lives in self-imposed exile in Manhattan. He is also a member of President Trump’s Mar-A-Lago club in Florida.

Feadship launched Lady May  in the Netherlands in 2014. Originally named Como , the yacht was built for New Zealander Neville Crichton. Robb Report reported at the time that the yacht was different from others on the market because its main deck was wrapped in a continuous sheet of glass. “This design creates the illusion that the entire superstructure is supported by glass and provides largely uninterrupted views from the yacht’s salon and forward owner’s suite,” we wrote.

Lady May is currently on sale for $27.9 million .  It won a number of design awards in 2015 after it was launched.

The Bannon arrest was made by officials from the U.S. Postal Service, with transport provided by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The billion-dollar superyacht was spotted traveling to Portland, where it docked close to the residence of one of Jamaica’s richest men- Lee-Chin.

Chin, who owns the National Commercial bank and a range of related companies, is often given idol status by Jamaican entertainers like Vybz Kartel , who once sang, “me waan get a billion dollar like Mr. Lee Chin.”

The self-made billionaire is just one of 13 black billionaires in the world, and he’s a big deal in Jamaica because of this.

The luxury yacht is docked in Port Antonio, Portland, and is pretty impressive. A video shows the 377-foot yacht sailing while a helicopter seems to land on a helipad right on the deck of the vessel.

According to recent reports, the superyacht AHPO recently completed sea trials and was finally delivered to Chin this week. With his superyacht docked in Jamaican waters, it presented new inspiration for Jamaican people as the business magnate is one of the first black billionaires listed by Forbes’ in 2001 and often referred to as the wealthiest Jamaican.

Michael Lee-Chin’s fortune is mostly his 60% stake in National Commercial Bank Jamaica. His philanthropic acts include his $30 million donation to the Royal Ontario Museum and many other charitable acts in Jamaica.

Like every other billionaire, the tycoon has been described as a “yacht connoisseur.” The AHPO was built by the German Lurssen shipyard and was designed by the famous Nuvolari Lenard studio.

The vessel comes with six decks, including a gym and a beauty salon, as well as a spa, swimming pool, and jacuzzi.

The 70-year-old billionaire who is private about his life also seems keen to entertain as the luxury vessel has a dancefloor with a piano and comes equipped with a movie theater.

There are seven luxurious suites on board for guests to get a good night’s sleep. Other functionalities include Wi-Fi connectivity and a premium underwater lighting system.

The shipyard says the yacht has eco-friendly features, including a Dynamic Positioning capability that helps “preserve delicate marine environments” and a heat recovery system for heating the swimming pool.

Meanwhile, Jamaicans took to Twitter to comment on the news of the yacht in Jamaica.

“For perspective, the largest private yacht in Jamaica is 92+ft. Lee Chin’s vessel is 377 ft! That’s longer than an NFL football field or a soccer field.”

The billionaire previously owned the ‘Quattroelle’ valued at $250 million prior to owning the AHPO. According to the Jamaica Observer, that vessel was 283 ft long and was one of the most impressive yachts at the annual Monaco Yacht Show.

A superyacht owned by Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie attracted attention recently after being spotted in Miami, Florida.

A TikToker posted a video of "Kaos," Walton Laurie's 361-foot luxury yacht, as it was moored outside her "front door."

"Oh wow, this thing is huge," Bridget Brick says in the video, adding that the yacht "looks like a small city."

Walton Laurie, worth $7.5 billion according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index , is the youngest daughter of Walmart co-founder James "Bud" Walton. She inherited her father's stake in the company when he died in 1995.

According to Bloomberg , she has a stake of less than 5% in Walmart, with the rest of the family's holding controlled by her sister, Ann Walton Kroenke.

Walton Laurie is the founder of a New York-based dance group called the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet. She also owns a dance studio located in Columbia, Missouri called the Columbia Performing Arts Centre.

According to Yacht Bible , Kaos has four decks and room for 31 guests as well as 45 crew, with the largest deck boasting a swimming pool and even an aquarium. 

It also has a large cinema, sauna, and full spa facilities, the site says.

Photos shared by the Superyacht Times appear to show other features such as a helipad, a jacuzzi, and storage space for a smaller boat. 

"Kaos" was built in the Netherlands by Oceanco, a custom yacht builder which also constructed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' $500 million megayacht .

"Kaos" was previously named "Al Menwar" by the House of Thani, the Qatari royal family, per the Yacht Bible.

The yacht was fully refitted in 2020 by Luerssen in Hamburg, Germany, per the Yacht Bible, while the interior was redesigned with help from Reymond Langton Design.

Walton Laurie reportedly also owns another lavish superyacht called "Secret," according to Robb Report .

Belle Harbor Yacht Club

Club History

1904 - 1908 +.

1900-1

Nov. 1904: Several Brooklyn men interested in forming a yacht club contacted the West Rockaway Land Company; owners of new property in Belle Harbor, Long Island to purchase land in order to build a yacht club.

Dec. 1st, 1904: A group of boaters and yachtsmen mostly from Brooklyn, NY organized themselves and called a meeting at 8:30 pm in the Superba Rooms on Fulton and Franklin Ave, Brooklyn N.Y. The meeting was for the purpose of considering the organization of a yacht club. The organization would be known as the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. (Minutes from that meeting are archived)

"The majority of the members of the Belle Harbor Yacht Club are secessionists from the long-established Jamaica Bay Yacht Club who were angered because “Ed” Corey, former owner of The Haymarket, (a brothel) was elected Vice Commodore. They are all cottagers of Arverne, Edgemere, and Far Rockaway, and owners of some of the finest sailing sloops and motor yachts in the Jamaica Bay fleet.

So long as Corey kept beneath the surface of club affairs, members who objected to his membership were content to accept the explanation of his sponsors that they did not know of his Haymarket associations when put up for election. But, when persons whom Corey used to entertain at his Sixth Avenue resort began to call at the club, the membership was divided. This caused many members to resign their club membership and form a new club.

The Belle Harbor Yacht Club member's asserted, they will absorb the yachting prestige of Jamaica Bay before this summer is over." (NY Times, 4/24/1905)

1905: A grant [agreement] was made between the West Rockaway Land Co. and the Belle Harbor Yacht Club, stating that the grant was intended to convey 20 plots of upland and that to such extent the West Rockaway Land Company guaranteed. The purchase price for the Belle Harbor property was $4,000. which include 200 square feet on land. BHYC was granted corporation status by the State of New York on March 5.

June 17th, 1908: Inter-club Ocean Races of the Belle Harbor, Canarsie and Bergen Beach Yacht Clubs began. Each race was 15 nautical miles with 6 hour time limits and 2 of the 3 races would be around the Sandy Hook and Scotland lightships and back to the Jamaica Bay start/finish line. 1909 - 1922 +

1914-1915: BHYC hired club member and lawyer, Franklin Taylor Esq to investigate the property issues pertaining to the Club and New York City. (New York Times Article July 26th, 1914)

In the 1920's, before the depression, family activity at the club reached its first peak. there were 300 members were on the roll. There were multiple tennis courts and the BHYC was a member of the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association, playing matches with other clubs every Sunday. Social life was lively on the bay. Entertainment committees were always planning, they hired an interior decorator to make the clubhouse festive for dances and enlisted the steward to serve as a bootlegger for the parties each summer. Sailing, of course, was also a key activity. In 1921, the club hosted the 14th Annual Inter Club Races.

1922: The Yacht Racing Association of Jamaica Bay, L.I., N.Y. consisted of several nearby yacht clubs including Canarsie YC, Rockaway Park YC, Old Mill YC, Motor Boats of Jamaica Bay, Rockaway Point YC, Midget Squadron, Broad Channel YC, Diamond Point YC and the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. Boating Classes were given at each club, regatta racing fees were $1., to qualify for prizes, each entry must compete in at least 60% of all races. YRAJB headquarters was located at the Invincible Club on Herkimer Street, Brooklyn, N.Y.

1923 - 1959 +

1938: Among the most notable of events in the 1930's, not only at the B.H.Y.C. but in the country, was the great hurricane of 1938. Occurring before hurricanes were named, the 1938 storm is still today considered the strongest tropical cyclone to strike the northeastern United States since 1869. Along the East Coast of the United States (north of Florida) only Hurricanes Hazel and Hugo were more intense at landfall.

The storm of '38 (Category 3) destroys BHYC's 500 foot pier. The army corp of engineers re-supported the coast line with granite barriers. The title for this area was vested to the City of New York in February 1938. The NYC Economic Corp / Ports & Tunnels took authority and over the years transfer the management to the NYC Small Business Development . This is the land directly in front of the BHYC property.

1934-1959: Robert Moses was named NYC Parks Commissioner. Improvements in transportation, under the direction of Parks Commissioner Robert Moses in the 1930’s, led to the population growth of Rockaway. The completion of two bridges, the Marine Parkway Bridge in 1937 and the Cross Bay Bridge in 1939, connected Rockaway to mainland Queens and Brooklyn. Innovations in railroad service and the development of the elevated subway allowed popular access to the peninsula. Subway access stimulated Rockaway’s transition from a vacation area to neighborhoods with permanent residents. Robert Moses oversaw the Beach Channel Park Project which included Beach Channel Drive. Mr. Moses was a supporter of coastal highway design. He changed Bayside Ave. (Cronston Ave.) as the main road between bridges to Beach Channel Drive, along the water.

1960 - 1970 +

September 12, 1960: Hurricane Donna (Category 3) pounded New York City with winds gusting up to 90 miles per hour, dumped five inches of rain, and flooded lower Manhattan almost to waist level on West and Cortlandt Streets (at the southwest corner of what later became the site of the World Trade Center). The water level at the Battery tide gauge (in lower Manhattan) registered 8.4 feet above mean sea level. Normal travel was disrupted as airports sharply curtailed service, subways shut down, and highways closed due to flooding. Hurricane Donna devastated the Rockaway Peninsula. This storm destroyed the BHYC floating dock and pilings and led to the construction of the bay wall in front of the club, in 1963.

Dec. 10th, 1964-Dec. 9th, 1971: The BHYC was given permits (yearly) by the NYC Dept. of Ports and Terminals to construct and maintain 30 linear feet of bulkhead, together with 1800 feet of upland inshore, together with 1800 square feet of lands under water outshore between B126 & B127 with a floating dock. Diagram on file.

1960's: Some BHYC members, looking to make a few bucks, rented out their homes in the neighborhood to vacationers and moved into the club's rental rooms during the summer months. The club was open 24/7 with a full kitchen and bar to accommodate these entrepreneurs.

1966: The Tri-State Transportation Commission recommended construction of the $35 million Shore Front Parkway. The Shore Front Parkway was slated for completion by 1975. Unlike earlier parkways built by Moses, the Shore Front Parkway was to be built through densely populated neighborhoods in the Rockaways that would have been sacrificed by its construction.

Milton Mollen, who in 1960 was counsel for the newly created New York City Housing Redevelopment Board, was deeply concerned: Mollen recalls, "He once called me to the Randall's Island headquarters of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA) and showed me plans for building a new highway along Beach Channel Drive, but it would have displaced people who had already been relocated (from earlier Moses projects) with the promise they would not be moved for at least five years. He said he didn't care. They can be moved again. He left a legacy of distrust we're still dealing with". (Excerpts from www.NYCroads.com )

1968: Moses was removed from his NY State government position.

August 1970: BHYC holds their 5th Annual Family Regatta. A young, Peter Galvin wins the Junior Commodores Cup.

1971 - 2007 +

1992: Clubmembers pursued the possibility of installing a swimming pool to add to the benefits of membership. $25,000. was raised. After proposals were made, permits estimated, architect plans drawn (Drawing on file) and projected costs were discussed, the pool project was postponed until operating expenses could be met.

1998: During financial hard times, the Board voted to sell a portion of the property to pay off debt and renovate the BHYC building. Several investment companys and groups made offers but were ultimately voted down during a special meeting of the club membership. New found support and a membership drive in '99-'00, led by Kevin Ward, helped alleviate the financial difficulties.

Jan. 2003: At the Annual General Meeting, the newly elected board of directors devise a 10 year plan to stabilize the club financially, begin clubhouse renovations, create a social calendar and attract new members.

May, 28 2005: The BHYC celebrated their 100th Anniversary with a well attended Opening Day Ceremony and Party. Over 250 people celebrated the club's longevity.

Nov. 2006: The rear of the club caught fire and destroyed the rear of the building / kitchen storage area. The building was reconstructed and repaired within a few months.

Jan. 2nd, 2007: The BHYC gets a new "facelift" with a new interior look and repaired infrastructure. 1st floor carpet and old bar were replaced. The repairs are countless due to years of neglect. Major work and redesign will continue of the next 10 years.

2008 - Present +

2013-1

Oct. 29th, 2012  - "Superstorm" Sandy hits the Rockaways. History repeats itself ... 1938, 1960, 1993 and now 2013 ... Hurricane/ Superstorm causes significant damage to the entire peninsula. Local residents took refuge at the club as water level rose and fires spread on neighboring blocks. Supplies from all over the country are sent to the club for distribution.  Local Organization, Rockway WISH spearheads charity efforts at the club.  BHYC becomes a community HQ's during recovery efforts. "Our doors never closed during this difficult time", stated by a board member. Club suffers $75,000 in damages, mainly in the basement utility rooms.

Feb. 2013 - Four months after Superstorm Sandy, the BHYC was back to "normal" club business. Damage to the club was extensive. Repairs continue.

May 2015 - Board plans to celebrate the 110th Opening of the BHYC. The newly renovated "Member's Lounge" opens to rave reviews. Dining room received major renovations. Entertainment calendar reaches 25 events. Membership peaks over 275.

On board Dardanella with Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza

With the sea and arts coursing through her veins, it comes as no surprise that Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza is dedicated to heritage, travel and conservation. Tristan Rutherford explores an extraordinary life of adventure

Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza was born to be an art collector and ocean activist. Her father, Baron Hans Heinrich, owned one of the world’s finest collections of art – his trove of treasures was surpassed only by Queen Elizabeth II, and Thyssen-Bornemisza recalls touring the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg in 1982, viewing Matisses and van Goghs in candlelit basements as her father negotiated an exhibition. He also kept a yacht in Monaco’s Port Hercules, so it comes as no surprise that Thyssen-Bornemisza followed suit in both respects once she reached adulthood.

Her own yachting odyssey began in Venice. “You probably know Johnny Pigozzi?” she asks at the start of our conversation, referring to the madcap collector of African and Japanese art. “He’s quite a legend. Anyway, he sailed Amazon Express to the Biennale.” This steel trawler was converted into a 67-metre expedition yacht in the Arsenale di Venezia, then redesigned by a young Espen Øino.

“Johnny said: ‘The whole point of having a boat is to take it to the far ends of the world. And where you want to go is Greenland.’” Thyssen-Bornemisza took a long lease on Dardanella , a 37-metre Vitters explorer she found “lingering neglected in a harbour in Barcelona” which she still rents on a long-term basis for her research projects. The vessel had form, as it had already circumnavigated the globe. “So I asked my captain, ‘Could we go to Greenland with her?’ He looked at me in horror and replied: ‘Erm, we could start with the Scottish Isles.’”

It’s where she is when I speak to her, and Thyssen-Bornemisza is hosting our video call from a rugged yellow RIB near Scotland’s Isle of Mull. The reception fades as she navigates over kelp forests to track a basking shark she spotted an hour earlier. Covid-19 has led a number of superyacht owners to find sanctuary in Scottish waters, where grey seals and dahlia anemones guard some spectacular wrecks.

However for Thyssen-Bornemisza, like Viking explorers of old, Scotland was merely a stepping stone. “During our 2011 Scotland cruise we found another captain who knew the waters of Iceland and Greenland really well,” she explains. Dardanella circumnavigated the island’s volcanic coastline with her new hire at the helm. “He was not overly excited when we asked to  join the Atlantic crossing between Iceland  and Greenland, because crews generally don’t like carrying passengers [during potentially rough voyages].”

“At the last minute I begged to sail with the crew,” laughs Thyssen-Bornemisza. She admits the sea got rougher and rougher as Dardanella neared Greenland. “Icelandic fishermen had told us horror stories about 12-metre waves out there and it was true. Then a huge sea egg, a 25-kilometre sheet of rock ice, broke off. They are extremely dangerous floating islands and they believe it’s one of these that sank the Titanic .” Her yacht had to circle deep into Baffin Bay to arrive at an iced-up Ilulissat harbour. (Clue: the port’s name translates as “Icebergs” in Greenlandic.) Furthermore, her three children were flying in and there wasn’t a local hotel room to be had.

Fortunately another explorer yacht sailed into Ilulissat. “It was Akula [a 59-metre ex-Dutch navy vessel, transformed into an expedition boat by Vosper Thornycroft]. It boasted a small helicopter on its bow. So I sent her a note, from one explorer to another, asking to borrow it to rescue the children. And guess who was waiting on board? Johnny Pigozzi. He had made the same passionate Greenland speech to an English guy and Johnny had come along for the ride. What are the chances? Anyway that’s how I fell for adventure yachting in a big way.”

A second epiphany occurred while drifting in a tender off the Dominican Republic. “The sound artists Jana Winderen and Chris Watson [who worked on David Attenborough’s Blue Planet series] handed me a pair of hydrophones. I just drifted into a Zen moment listening to humpback whales singing.” ( Dardenella would later be refitted with an ambisonic 360° onboard studio by Tony Myatt, the head of Music and Media at the University of Surrey in the UK.) “However I was brutally shaken out of it by the engines of illegal fishing boats poaching unbelievable amounts of stock from this marine reserve. It was so sad.”

Thyssen-Bornemisza decided to take action, co-founding the Alligator Head Foundation in Jamaica, which protects fish stocks by restoring habitats and regenerating local economies. It’s now the island’s largest privately backed marine sanctuary. “Our underwater recordings highlighted nature in a way we have only been visually connected to,” she says. “So I asked myself: How can I better communicate the way the ocean is being abused by using the network I have in arts and culture?”

It’s quite a network. In 1993 Thyssen-Bornemisza married Karl von Habsburg, head of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, which once ruled much of central Europe. After a decade-long career as an actress, singer and model, she dedicated herself to art collecting and pioneering exhibitions – one of which entailed a floating barge of talking television sets by Turkish visual artist Kutluğ Ataman, which sailed up the Danube from Romania to Vienna. In 2002 she set up TBA21, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary foundation, in Vienna’s Museum Quarter, an ironic location given that the von Hapsburg family had been barred from the city since losing power in 1918.

As Dardenella sailed through the Panama Canal, a more sophisticated conservation programme began to take shape. “We completely focused on inviting aboard established artists, indigenous leaders, lawyers and marine biologists,” Thyssen-Bornemisza says. It was christened TBA21–Academy, an offshoot of her Vienna-based foundation. The plan was to cruise remote Pacific regions of interest, among them the Marovo Lagoon (the largest saltwater lagoon in the world) and the 10-kilometre-deep Tonga Trench (“it’s like flying a boat on top of Mount Everest”). Then these advocates “could find a common language to articulate environmental topics, such as campaigning for quieter oceans, which has become my cross to bear.”

In 2015, TBA21–Academy discovered an aquatic first in the Solomon Islands. Dardanella was carrying National Geographic explorer and marine biologist David Gruber, who noticed a “bright red and green spaceship” approaching during a night dive. A tribal chief had warned of saltwater crocodiles in the Solomon depths. But this reptile was a biofluorescent hawksbill turtle. The technicolour footage set the National Geographic website ablaze.

When asked about her preferred destination, Thyssen-Bornemisza is unwavering. “Definitely Papua New Guinea. We’ve been there four times.” The explorer yacht boasts “extremely large  water tanks and a purification system enabling guests to voyage far up the Sepik River.” This 1,000-kilometre waterway snakes through verdant rainforest and crocodile-infested narrows towards Ambunti, a once-in-a-lifetime location for festivities. “The Crocodile Festival there is indescribable,” she explains. “Fire dances, sacred spirit performances, it just never stops. Like so many Pacific nations, their traditions suffered enormously under colonisation. Now we’re seeing a cultural renaissance, from tattoos to language and dance.”

Some cultural highlights couldn’t be  planned. “ Dardanella ’s guests were invited to a ceremony where local shamans and chiefs were reconsecrating a longhouse,” Thyssen-Bornemisza recalls. “In the 1960s Michael Rockefeller bought the original longhouse for his collection. It now resides in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.” The young Rockefeller was killed, purportedly by Papuan headhunters, during a second art-gathering trip in 1961.

Papua New Guinea is far safer today, which is fortunate as Dardanella recently gained her charter licence. “There’s no reason why the chance to explore truly remote regions should be exclusive to us,” says Thyssen-Bornemisza. “After ten years in the Pacific the crew have developed an irreplaceable know-how. We can propose fantastic guides we’ve met along the way.” These include one of the few people who has been bitten – twice – by a bull shark and who ranks among the world’s most experienced shark divers.

“We’re also known in the industry for having an amazing crew,” continues Thyssen-Bornemisza. These staff members sport low-key T-shirts and leather bracelets, a far cry from formal charter whites. The yacht’s Scottish-Japanese wellness practitioner, for example, lived in the Himalayas, decamped to a Japanese Zen temple, and now presides over the onboard yoga programme. ARTnews called Dardanella : “a ship unusually suited for both rigorous scientific research and multi-course meals with fine  wines to match”. Three tenders can sail multiple missions at once, in support of art, conservation or out-and-out leisure.

“Not everybody wants mad adventures,” says Thyssen-Bornemisza. “Doing a lot of diving works well with morning Pilates and evening massages. The yacht offers a complete experience.” Headline destinations include Maupiti near Bora Bora, which hosts an “underwater garden” of sea life, and Tetepare, the largest uninhabited island in the South Pacific, where reefs support the world’s second-highest levels of fish and coral biodiversity, after Raja Ampat in Indonesia.

Thyssen-Bornemisza’s latest project also involves conservation in another guise. She is creative director of LOPUD-1483, a 15th century heritage property with accommodation and an art collection on a car-free Croatian island. Like her other adventures, the backstory of this 2020 opening is utterly compelling.

“In the early 1990s I wanted to document what was going on in Vukovar,” explains Thyssen-Bornemisza, citing a conflict zone where thousands of pieces of art were reportedly looted. “Travelling [in the former Yugoslavia] was no easy feat. Croatia was scrambling to organise its own cultural ministry and was accepting any kind of support offered. The government gave me a mandate to document and protect their heritage.” After the Siege of Dubrovnik in 1991 ended, she initiated a conservation studio inside the city’s Franciscan monastery. “From there we helped restore the paintings with experts from the Getty Museum and Uffizi Gallery that are now exhibited in the Dominican monastery [a stunning backdrop used in the Game of Thrones TV series].”

A local friar, Father Pio Mario, knew of another Franciscan monastery in a far more parlous state. In 1994 Thyssen-Bornemisza boarded a boat with her friend, the architect Frank Gehry. The long chug from Dubrovnik to Lopud (a 30-minute RIB ride today) passed lonely lighthouses, unnamed islets and sandy coves only accessible by sea. “It looked like nobody had cared for Lopud’s monastery for 100 years,” says Thyssen-Bornemisza. “The floors had gone, the roof was missing, but there was a spirit to the place. Gehry advised me to take my time with the project. I did – it took 20 years!”

LOPUD-1483 has five guest rooms cloistered near a medicinal garden dating from 1317. All are decorated with contemporary art from TBA-21. “The collection arrived by ferry in the fishing harbour, although it posed no more difficulty than transporting art to a city museum”. Guests at LOPUD-1483 dine at a 16th-century refectory table once used by Baron Hans Heinrich to entertain guests. Renaissance ceramics are exhibited next to designer furniture by Paola Lenti. “I’m not worried that anything will get damaged. Most items have survived for centuries as it is.” The property, with its private swimming cave, yoga studio and world-class chef, can be booked exclusively for €10,000 per night.

Within striking distance is the island of Korcula, the birthplace of Marco Polo, plus the Bay of Kotor, where sea captains would plant exotic trees from their travels, in a park now sited behind Porto Montenegro. “Oceans connect all people of the world,” she concludes. “Except possibly the Swiss, like me!” But, like many things in her life, this clearly doesn’t apply to Thyssen-Bornemisza. She is a true citizen of the world.

Who owns the ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore?

The collapse of  Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday after being struck by a cargo ship has raised questions about who owns and manages the ship, as well as on the potential impact on one the busiest ports in the U.S.

Called the Dali, the 948-foot vessel that hit the bridge is managed by Synergy Marine Group, a Singapore-based company with over 660 ships under management worldwide, according to its website . The group said the ship was operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group and chartered by Danish shipping giant Maersk at the time of the incident, which sent vehicles and people tumbling into the Patapsco River.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," Maersk said in a statement to CBS News on Tuesday, in which it also confirmed the ship was carrying cargo for Maersk customers. The company had no crew or personnel aboard the ship.

The Dali, which can carry up to 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, was carrying nearly 4,700 containers at the time of the collision. It was operated by a 22-person, Indian crew. It was not immediately clear what kind of cargo the ship was carrying. 

Who owns and manages the Dali?

The Dali is owned by Grace Ocean Private, a Singapore-based company that provides water transportation services. The ship was chartered by Danish container shipping company Maersk at the time of the collision.

Synergy Marine, founded in 2006, provides a range of ship management services, including managing ships' technical components and their crews and overseeing safety, according to S&P Capital IQ. Its parent company, Unity Group Holdings International, an investment holding company, was founded in 2008 and is based in Hong Kong.

Where was the ship headed?

The outbound ship had left Baltimore and was headed for Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, Synergy Marine Group said in a  press release . 

How busy is the Port of Baltimore?

In 2023, the Port of Baltimore handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion, according  to the office of Maryland Gov. Wes Moore. The port is also a significant provider of local jobs. 

The top port in the U.S. for sugar and gypsum imports, it is the ninth busiest U.S. port by the total volume and value of foreign cargo handled. All vessel traffic into and out of the facility is currently suspended, although the port remains open and trucks continue to be processed within its terminals, according to a statement released by Port of Baltimore officials. 

What is the potential local economic impact?

Directly, the port supports 15,300 jobs, while another 140,000 in the area are related to port activities. The jobs provide a combined $3.3 billion in personal income, according to a CBS News report . The Port of Baltimore said Tuesday that it is unclear how long ship traffic will be suspended.

The disaster also caused chaos for local drivers. The Maryland Transportation Authority said all lanes were closed in both directions on I-695, with traffic being detoured to I-95 and I-895.

How could the bridge collapse affect consumers and businesses?

Experts say the bridge collapse could cause significant supply chain disruptions.

"While Baltimore is not one of the largest U.S. East Coast ports, it still imports and exports more than 1 million containers each year, so there is the potential for this to cause significant disruption to supply chains," Emily Stausbøll, a market analyst at Xeneta, an ocean and air freight analytics platform, said in a statement. 

She added that freight services from Asia to the East Coast in the U.S. have already been hampered by drought in the Panama Canal, as well as risks related to conflict in the Red Sea. Nearby ports, including those in New York, New Jersey and Virginia, will be relied on to handle more shipments if Baltimore remains inaccessible. 

Whether ocean freight shipping rates will rise dramatically, potentially affecting consumers as retailers pass along higher costs, will depend on how much extra capacity the alternate ports can handle, Stausbøll said. "However, there is only so much port capacity available and this will leave supply chains vulnerable to any further pressure."

Marty Durbin, senior vice president of policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said that the bridge is a critical connector of "people, businesses, and communities."

"Unfortunately, its prolonged closure will likely disrupt commercial activities and supply chains that rely on the bridge and Port of Baltimore each day," he said in a statement.

What other industries could be affected?

Trucking companies could be severely affected by the disaster. 

"Aside from the obvious tragedy, this incident will have significant and long-lasting impacts on the region," American Trucking Associations spokesperson Jessica Gail said, calling Key Bridge and Baltimore's port "critical components'' of the nation's infrastructure.

Gail noted that 1.3 million trucks cross the bridge every year — 3,600 a day. Trucks that carry hazardous materials will now have to make 30 miles of detours around Baltimore because they are prohibited from using the city's tunnels, she said, adding to delays and increasing fuel costs.

"Time-wise, it's going to hurt us a lot," added Russell Brehm, the terminal manager in Baltimore for Lee Transport, which trucks hazardous materials such as petroleum products and chemicals. The loss of the bridge will double to two hours the time it takes Lee to get loads from its terminal in Baltimore's Curtis Bay to the BJ's gasoline station in the waterfront neighborhood of Canton, he estimated.

Cruise operators are also being affected. A Carnival cruise ship that set off Sunday for the Bahamas had been scheduled to return to Baltimore on March 31. Carnival said Tuesday that it is "currently evaluating options for Carnival Legend's scheduled return on Sunday." The company also has cruises scheduled to set sail from Baltimore through the summer. 

Norwegian Cruise Line last year introduced new routes departing from the Port of Baltimore. Its sailings are scheduled for late this year. The company said the Key Bridge collapse doesn't immediately require it to reroute any ships.

Who will pay to rebuild the bridge?

President Biden said Tuesday that the federal government, with congressional support, would pay to rebuild the bridge.

"We're going to work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs. It's my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge," Biden said in comments from the White House. "And I expect the Congress to support my effort. This is going to take some time. The people of Baltimore can count on us though, to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."
