Sparkman & Stephens were naval Architects on a Custom 83 footer that we had delivered in 1987.

When we started to plan a 64 feet serial model we chose Sparkman & Stephens as designer because they possessed both experience and proven ability in designing big sailing yachts.

Our goal was to create a high quality and a high performance yacht that could be used successfully for racing as well as fast, comfortable cruising. Baltic 64 had a moderate IOR hull shape, since she could then also be raced very successfully in the IMS division.

New Listing – 1997 Baltic Yachts 64

Posted Friday 8th September 2023

baltic 64 yacht

Sparkman & Stephens designed performance cruiser from Baltic Yachts in Finland. Hull No.5 of 5 in the semi-custom series. Refitted in 2023 with new paint, sails, batteries and so on.

FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

PIXELION was originally built by the Baltic shipyard as the last of five Baltic 64’s for an Italian entrepreneur (pharmaceutical industry). He set the interior design for his own use and plans – to use her mainly for Corporate events (hence the reason for the 2 master cabins). The yacht was originally named “LADY G” and was operated across Italy under the Italian Flag.

A few years later the first owner sold “LADY G”, to order a larger new yacht from Baltic. The new owner was an Italian / American who changed the yacht’s name to “VAHANLEX”. Sold back to Europe in 2009, she was renamed ‘PIXELION’ and benefitted from a comprehensive refit in 2010/2011. Sold again in 2018, PIXELION cruised to the Caribbean where she was recently purchased by her current owner to add to his constantly changing fleet which currently also includes a classic Swan 65.

2023 refit highlights include: • New Awlgrip topsides paint. • New Awlgrip deck/superstructure paint. • Refurbished teak decks • New mainsail and genoa • New Gel service batteries • New start batteries • New bimini • New sprayhood • Systems checks

*** Please note – Updated photos to follow once refit and painting is completed ***

Baltic 64 is a 64 ′ 2 ″ / 19.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Baltic Yachts between 1988 and 1997.

Drawing of Baltic 64

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

OWNER REMARKS & HISTORY Pixelion was built by the Baltic shipyard for an Italian entrepreneur (pharmaceutical industry). He set the interior design for his own use and plans - to use her mainly for Corporate events (hence the reason for the 2 master cabins). The yacht was originally named “Lady G” and was operated across Italy under the Italian Flag. "Lady G” was the last of the 64 series (number 5). She has been designed to be extremely stable with a deeper keel than usually (with a draft of 3.3m instead of 2.9m like the 4 other sister-ships) – A few years later the first owner sold “Lady G”, to order a larger new yacht from Baltic. The new owner was an Italian - American involved in real-estate. He transferred the vessel to the United States of America. He also changed the yacht’s name to VAHANLEX. The current owners purchased the boat in June 2009.  They imported her from USA to Europe and renamed her Pixelion - (why Pixelion? Because they are working in the scanning market and you get pixels when you scan a document  - and also they are based in Lyon as well….) not to mention that they liked this name better than VAHANLEX …. The American flag was cancelled in 2009 and the yacht is registered in Toulon, France. During her life Pixelion has crossed the Atlantic 6 times. She is a strong and able ocean going sailing yacht.  The last time though was in 2008. After they purchased VAHNALEX the current owners modified the length of the keel to take her back to the original design size at 2.9 meters (faster and easier for most harbours) . This has been done by Baltic in Viareggio at the Vismara ship yard. The yacht has always has been handled by a professional crew from the beginning through each ownership. Although by the owners admission when he purchased her, in June 2009, she had received a low maintenance  during the former 18 months. However under the current ownership the yacht has had a complete refit in 2010 / 2011 and a high level of maintenance since then.

Why is Moscow called ‘the port of five seas’?

baltic 64 yacht

Moscow has many nicknames : ‘A City on Seven Hills’; ‘The Third Rome’; ‘White-Stoned’; and most surprisingly, ‘The Port of the Five Seas’. Geography, however, won’t help in explaining how this is possible. If you look on a map, you’ll see that Moscow’s location is not even close to any sea. The nearest is the Gulf of Finland (which flows into the Baltic Sea) and where St. Petersburg is located. But that’s about 600 kilometers from Moscow.

How did this nickname originate?

As usual the answer lies in history, though not so distant in the past. The first to call Moscow ‘a port of five seas’ was Joseph Stalin, and the matter was connected with the country’s rapid industrialisation.

The White Sea-Baltic Canal, 1933

The White Sea-Baltic Canal, 1933

Huge ‘communist constructions’ were arranged throughout the Soviet Union. The most ambitious were canals. The most infamous project was the White Sea-Baltic Canal built by prisoners in record time, costing the lives of thousands of prisoners.

At the same time, Stalin arranged a huge plan for rebuilding Moscow. The city had to be modernized to be a suitable and impressive capital for the new ambitious and progressive Soviet nation. Moscow in the late 1920s, however, still looked quite provincial. For several centuries during the Imperial era it had become a second-rate city, since most development and progress was focused in the Tsar’s capital St. Petersburg.

Stalin began construction on a metro system, built new thoroughfares and highways, and even made the streets broader (in some cases even the buildings were moved !). Without any hesitation Stalin ordered to get rid of anything that could interrupt a new highway or prospect.

Many structures connected to the old regime were demolished, including dozens of old churches and monasteries, as well as the Kitay-Gorod Wall, a 16th century fortification in the city center, just one kilometer from the Kremlin.

To supply a rapidly developing Moscow with a large amount of drinking and industrial water, and to make it accessible to shipping, Stalin ordered the building of a canal that connected the relatively small Moskva River with the Volga River. (Peter the Great first thought of this ambitious idea back in the 18th century, but never realized it).

The construction of the Moskva-Volga Canal, 1934-1937

The construction of the Moskva-Volga Canal, 1934-1937

The 128 kilometers waterway was built by Gulag prisoners from 1932 to 1937. First it was called the ‘Moskva-Volga canal’, but in 1947 it was renamed the ‘Moscow Canal’. The famous phrase – Moscow is now ‘a port of five seas’ – was pronounced by Stalin in 1937 at the canal opening ceremony.

Which seas does it connect with?

The White Sea and the Baltic Sea were connected by a canal, and the Baltic Sea was connected with the Volga River by a system of canals and rivers. The building of Moskva-Volga canal made it possible to reach the White Sea and the Baltic Sea by sailing from Moscow.

First ship enters lock on the Moscow-Volga Canal

The third sea is the Caspian, into which the Volga flows. Later, in the 1950s, another huge canal appeared - a 101 km waterway between the Volga and the Don rivers was built in Volgograd. This canal gave access from the Volga to the Sea of Azov - and subsequently to the Black Sea.

The Volga-Don Canal, 1952

The Volga-Don Canal, 1952

After all those big Soviet construction projects were completed, it was possible to reach the five seas without ever leaving one’s ship: the White, Baltic, Caspian and Black Sea, as well as the Sea of Azov.

Now what do you think – is Moscow a sea port or not?

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More

Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

Glory square

Report a mistake , glory square.

In live broadcast , there is the Square of Glory, located in the South-Eastern administrative district of Moscow in the territory of Kuzminki district. The square, which is perfectly visible in webcam, acquired its name in 2005 in honor of the 60th anniversary of the victory in the Second World War. On May 7, 2005, at the Glory Square, perfectly demonstrated in online live cam appeared music fountain “Music of Glory”. The complex, which you can also see in the webcam, has a 9m high “Pyramid of Memory” and “Victory Fanfare” 21m high.

In winter, at the Glory Square that you see online there is a skating rink.

Besides the Glory Square mentioned above, which is perfectly visible in webcam online , Moscow is proud of other very important famous squares.

The main square of the Russian capital  in this live camera, of course, is Red Square . It is a huge space made with cobblestones. This is a true symbol of the state. There are most important historical sights are located on the square: the Kremlin towers , Historical Museum , Saint Basil’s Cathedral, Lobnoye mesto , The Monument to Minin and Pozharsky.

Ivanovskaya and Cathedral Square

These areas are located inside the Kremlin. They include: the buildings of the Senate Palace and Arsenal , the Assumption and Archangel Cathedrals , the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the Palace of the Facets , the Tsar Cannon and the Tsar Bell.

Vasilevsky Descent

Despite the fact that there is nothing on this square, the citizens love it. Perhaps because of a beautiful view of St. Basil’s Cathedral opens from Vasilevsky Descent.

Theatre square

Theater Square has gained popularity due to the Bolshoi Theater located on its territory. In the square on Theater Square there is the Vitali fountain , Karl Marx monument , as well as the Theater Fountain.

Manezhnaya Square

Manezhnaya Square is a large square that is just a transit on the way to the Kremlin and Red Square. A small part of the square adjoins the Alexander Garden.

Borovitskaya square

Borovitskaya square is a big traffic interchange. There are 2 monuments here: the Pashkov House and a sculpture to the Monument to Vladimir the Great.

Pushkin Square

Pushkinskaya Square is named after the great Russian poet A.S. Pushkin . Here is the Monument to Alexander Pushkin too.

Triumphal Square

Triumphal Square is the modern square of Moscow, where the live broadcast comes from. It’s just nice to walk here.

Khitrovskaya Square

Khitrovskaya Square is located on the Ivanov Hill . This is a popular place for photographers, artists and excursions.

Revolution square

The Square of the Revolution is not particularly remarkable. It revives only at Christmas time, when the “Journey to Christmas” festival takes place here. The area turns into a big ice hill.
