First look: Inside Heesen's 55m superyacht Reliance
Interior images of the 55-metre Heesen motor yacht Reliance , previously known as Project Gemini , have been revealed. She has joined the charter fleet with West Nautical and will be heading to the Caribbean for her inaugural winter season before returning to the Mediterranean for summer 2024.
This follows the yacht's delivery in September 2023, with West Nautical overseeing the construction and Heesen stating that the delivery was completed "in co-operation with the Dutch authorities". The yacht began the build process on speculation but was purchased 15 months into construction by a client introduced by Arcon Yachts Monaco.
Her sporty, shark-grey exteriors are the work of long-time Heesen collaborator Omega Architects and interiors are courtesy of Luca Dini . Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she forms part of Heesen’s popular 55 Steel series, of which there are a total of five delivered yachts – including the 55-metre Vida and 55-metre Laurentia .
Reliance 's muscular lines and predatory profile are achieved with a “shark tooth” segment on the superstructure forward.
While the yacht’s exteriors come from an established collaboration, Reliance is the first Heesen yacht with interiors by Luca Dini. The Italian designer and his team worked to adapt the interior to create a refined ambience with fresh cream tones – especially prevalent in the main saloon, which includes a dining table for 12 guests overlooked by warm-toned feature lighting.
The yacht accommodates 12 guests in six spacious cabins, including an 82-square-metre owners' apartment on the main deck forward and the VIP on the bridge deck. The remaining guest cabins – two doubles and two twins – are on the lower deck.
Reliance features a number of customisations, including an opening window in the full-beam owner’s suite. The space is characterised by Tay wood panelling with dark oak framing, creating a calm and relaxed space, while the ensuite is fitted with marble units and features a dressing room, central bath, two showers, twin toilets and his-and-her sinks.
Up top, her impressive sundeck boasts a Jacuzzi, sun loungers and a well-equipped bar with a teppanyaki grill.
The full-beam sky lounge, located on the upper deck, is also fitted with ample seating and a bar area with floor-to-ceiling windows leading straight out onto the upper aft deck.
Reliance also features windows in the transom door which allows natural light to pour into the beach club, which is kitted with a large swim platform and wellness centre. Guests can benefit from Technogym exercise equipment, a sauna and hammam.
Perfect for charter guests, a well-stocked toybox includes Seabobs, electric surfboards and Jet Skis. There are also two tenders for excursions ashore and transportation.
Power derives from twin MTU 8V 4000 M63 IMO-Tier III diesel engines for a top speed of 15.5 knots and a transatlantic range of 4,500 miles at 13 knots.

World’s coolest yachts: Reliance
- August 3, 2022
We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. Andre Hoek nominates Reliance
My choice would be the yacht Reliance of 1903 designed by the famous Nat Herreshoff. I read the book Temple to the Wind a long time ago and could not put it down. That yacht was, for its day, such an extreme design and engineering feat, without computers and all designed and built in a short time. Herreshoff was the master in those days.
The yacht measured over 200ft overall with just 90ft of waterline [the huge overhangs were to take advantage of the rating rule when heeled], it displaced 189 tons and had a sail area of 1,500m2 (16,000ft2)! It was massive and with wooden masts that tipped 200ft above the water, an 84ft long wooden spinnaker pole and cotton sails.

She was the first yacht with winches below decks and despite that still had a crew of 64 to handle the gigantic sailplan.
Reliance won the America’s Cup against Shamrock III , a beautiful yacht designed by William Fife. Those were the days of extreme but beautiful yachts!
Reliance stats rating:
Top speed: 20 knots LOA: 61.3m/201ft Launched: 1903 Berths: 0 Price: $175,000 Adrenalin factor: 80%
Over the last four decades Andre Hoek has designed or optimised more classic style yachts than perhaps anyone, from traditional Dutch leeboarders to his highly successful Truly Classic and Pilot Classic ranges, through to stunning superyachts such as Adele and Elfje – plus of course his work on three of today’s latest J Class yachts .

Russian oligarch's yacht is costing U.S. taxpayers close to $1 million a month
A mega-yacht seized by U.S. authorities from a Russian oligarch is costing the government nearly $1 million a month to maintain, according to new court filings.
- The Justice Department is seeking permission to sell Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov.
- Attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.
The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking permission to sell a 348-foot yacht called Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov. The government said it wants to sell the $230 million yacht due to the "excessive costs" of maintenance and crew, which it said could total $922,000 a month.
"It is excessive for taxpayers to pay nearly a million dollars per month to maintain the Amadea when these expenses could be reduced to zero through [a] sale," according to a court filing by U.S. prosecutors on Friday.
The monthly charges for Amadea, which is now docked in San Diego, California, include $600,000 per month in running costs: $360,000 for the crew; $75,000 for fuel; and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food and other expenses. They also include $144,000 in monthly pro-rata insurance costs and special charges including dry-docking fees, at $178,000, bringing the total to $922,000, according to the filings.
Sign up to receive future editions of CNBC's Inside Wealth newsletter with Robert Frank.
The battle over Amadea and the costs to the government highlight the financial and legal challenges of seizing and selling assets owned by Russian oligarchs after the country's invasion of Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last week that the European Union should use profits from more than $200 billion of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's war effort.
Her comments echoed government calls in the spring of 2022 to freeze the yachts, private jets and mansions of Russian billionaires in hopes of putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and raising money for the war effort.
Yet, nearly two years later, the legal process for proving ownership of the Russian assets and selling them has proven to be far more time-consuming and costly. In London, Russian billionaire Eugene Shvidler has waged a court battle over his private jets that were impounded, and Sergei Naumenko has been appealing the detention of his superyacht Phi.
The battle over Amadea began in April 2022, when it was seized in Fiji at the request of the U.S. government, according to the court filings.
Though the U.S. alleges that the yacht is owned by Kerimov, who made his fortune in mining, attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.
In court filings, Khudainatov's attorneys have objected to the U.S. government's efforts to sell the yacht, saying a rushed sale could lead to a distressed sale price and that the maintenance costs are minor relative to the potential sale value.
Khudainatov's attorneys refuse to pay the ongoing maintenance costs as long as the government pursues a sale and forfeiture. However, they say their client will reimburse the U.S. government for the more than $20 million already spent to maintain the yacht if it's returned to its proper owner.
In court papers, the government says Kerimov disguised his ownership of Amadea through a series of shell companies and other owners. They say emails between crew members show Kerimov "was the beneficial owner of the yacht, irrespective of the titleholder of the vessel."
The emails show that Kerimov and his family ordered several interior improvements of the yacht, including a new pizza oven and spa, and that between 2021 and 2022, when the boat was seized, "there were no guest trips on the Amadea that did not include either Kerimov or his family members," according to the court filings.
The government also says Kerimov has been trying to sell Amadea for years, so a sale would be in keeping with his intent.
"This is not a situation in which a court would be ordering sale of a precious heirloom that a claimant desperately wishes to keep for sentimental reasons," the government said in filings.
Even if Amadea were sold quickly, the proceeds wouldn't automatically go to the government. Under law, the money would be held while Khudainatov and the government continue their battle in court over the ownership and forfeiture. Don't miss these stories from CNBC PRO:

Disney to Step Back From India in Mega-Deal with Reliance Industries
Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries will control what is left of Disney’s grasp at India’s burgeoning media market.
By Alex Travelli and Sameer Yasir
Reporting from New Delhi
The Walt Disney Company announced on Wednesday a joint venture with India’s biggest conglomerate, Reliance Industries, in an $8.5 billion deal that will create a media powerhouse in the world’s most populous nation and end Disney’s decades-long solo effort to gain a foothold in the market.
Reliance Industries, which is owned by Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest person, will be Disney’s senior partner in the deal. With $239 billion in market capitalization and rights to the wildly popular Indian Premier League cricket matches, Reliance is a juggernaut in the media landscape in India.
Disney and Reliance already had a combined market share of about 40 to 45 percent in advertising and about the same fraction of streaming, giving them a big edge over competitors, said Karan Taurani, a research analyst at Elara Capital.
“This will lead to better profitability because the content costs could come down” in both TV and streaming, Mr. Taurani said.
As part of the deal, Disney will merge its Indian operations with those of Viacom18, a part of Reliance Industries. Reliance and Viacom18 will hold 63 percent of the new venture, and Disney 37 percent, the companies said in a statement . Reliance will pay $1.4 billion to consolidate its control.
Nita M. Ambani, Mr. Ambani’s wife, will be the chair of the joint venture; the vice chair will be Uday Shankar, the former chairman of Disney India.
“Reliance has a deep understanding of the Indian market and consumer,” Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, said in a statement. “We’re excited for the opportunities that this joint venture will provide to create long-term value.”
Disney is one of the biggest of companies in the world, valued at $200 billion; in India, though, it proved no match for the homegrown hero.
Disney first came to India, now a country of 1.4 billion potential media consumers, in 1993, and found a distributor to broadcast some of its content.
Along with India’s market, Disney’s ambitions grew. Last year, the accounting and consulting firm EY estimated that India’s media landscape would be worth $30 billion this year and $100 billion by 2030. And Disney banked on bringing hundreds of millions of subscribers to its own streaming services.
Disney’s adventures in India were at their high point in 2019, when it bought 21st Century Fox from the Murdoch family’s News Corp. Among Fox’s assets, Disney won TV and streaming rights to the Indian Premier League cricket matches.
Big subscriber numbers followed, but at great cost. At its pandemic-fueled peak, Disney+ had 162 million subscribers in India, but it was losing almost $500 million worldwide in pursuit of viewers. By summer 2022, its global operations had bled more than $11 billion since the purchase of Fox and launch of Disney+.
That is when Disney ran into trouble. Reliance Industries snatched away the cricket rights in 2022 for nearly $3 billion. Disney lost 11.5 million Indian subscribers in short order, even as it gained 800,000 new ones in the rest of the world.
Still, Disney is not abandoning India.
“India remains a key market for the company and one of the strongest international growth markets of scale, and we are committed to ensuring a robust presence there,” Disney executives said in an email to employees on Wednesday.
When Reliance was started by Mr. Ambani’s father in 1958, it was a trading shop, mainly of polyester fiber. It grew into petrochemicals and now runs the world’s largest oil refinery at the port in Jamnagar, on a remote bit of India’s western coastline. Along the way, it got into telecommunications and other businesses, and in 2016 started a low-cost mobile network, Jio, which quickly became the world’s third largest.
JioCinema, part of a growing family of Jio properties but a relatively small platform when India’s streaming wars began, looks likely to become the new home for Disney’s content in India. At one point another rival looked ready to emerge, as the Japanese media giant Sony was seeking to expand its operations in India by buying Zee Entertainment.
With Zee, India’s first private cable-TV company, Sony would have been big enough to divide up the TV-and-digital market with Reliance and Disney. But Sony backed out of its deal with Zee on Jan. 22, frustrated by the founding family’s insistence on maintaining control.
Sony’s breakup with Zee seems to have made things even harder for Disney. For one thing, Zee still owes Disney for cricket licensing. Bloomberg reported that the estimated value of Disney’s India unit sank to $4.5 billion from $10 billion. Sony’s failed merger also made the eventual Disney deal look sweeter for Mr. Ambani: What would have been a landscape defined by two giants is instead looking likely to be dominated by just one.
Being such a sprawling conglomerate, Reliance has an advantage in the battles for media domination. It does not need content to pay for itself directly. When their subscribers are brought into their retail, telecom and credit operations, the cost of making shows looks small by comparison to combined revenue.
Brooks Barnes contributed reporting from Los Angeles.
