The best things to see and do in Monaco
Despite its compact size, Monaco is a luxury destination with a superb selection of things to see and do.
Even if you don’t want a flutter, the famed Monte-Carlo Casino is well worth visiting, located in the Golden Square, Monaco’s most exclusive address. Order a martini at the bar and admire the Belle Epoque building, designed by Charles Garnier and Jules Dutrou, with its many chandeliers and frescoes. Next door, the gilded Hôtel de Paris houses Alain Ducasse’s Michelin-starred Le Louis XV. Alternatively, the late Joël Robuchon’s eponymous restaurant is just a short stroll away at the equally elegant Hôtel Métropole.
This city is also well known for partying, whether aboard your superyacht or in the town at venues such as Sass Cafe, Twiga, or Jimmy’z nightclub.
For those who love to shop, Monaco is a dream with its collection of designer boutiques housed along with Monaco’s Avenue de Monte-Carlo, Avenue des Beaux-Arts, and the Allées Lumières center. From Piaget to YSL and all the other LVMH brands, among many others, there is no bona fide international designer without a boutique in the principality.
For those looking for a bit of pampering while on a Monaco superyacht charter, two spas rule the well-being scene in Monte Carlo: The Spa Metropole by Givenchy at the Metropole Monte Carlo and the Thérmes Marins Monte Carlo, which boasts a vast menu of thalassotherapy experiences.
For those wanting to stretch their sea legs, Monaco has something to offer all fitness capabilities. Wander the old town’s narrow streets in Monaco-Ville and visit the Prince’s Palace and Saint Nicholas Cathedral. If you are a fan of Grace Kelly, head to the rose garden in Fontvieille Park, built in her memory. For additional space in Monaco, check out the Jardin Exotique de Monaco and the Japanese Gardens.
Golf enthusiasts are in for a treat as well, with the Golf Club de Monte Carlo and the Monte Carlo Country Club. Both offer excellent courses with panoramic views over the Mediterranean Sea.

From all the must-see superyachts to the best places to party after the show, get the complete insider’s guide to the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 .
Running from 28 September to 1 October, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 will be attracting a fleet of superyachts and thousands of attendees to the Côte d'Azur for the 31st edition of the prestigious boat show.
For four days, Port Hercules will be a hive of activity as thousands of prospective clients and industry players descend on the French Riviera to explore what’s on display on the water and along the stands. Hundreds of exhibitors will be showing off their products and services, with top shipyards , brokerage houses and marine and luxury lifestyle stalls in attendance, along with brand-new areas being unveiled at this year's show.
What’s in store at this year’s show?
This year the show will unveil its brand-new Adventure Area and Sustainability Hub, alongside its popular Design & Innovation Hub and dockside areas committed to the exhibition of superyachts and tenders.
Sustainability Hub
With a renewed focus on sustainability and environmental protection initiatives, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 will be unveiling its brand new exhibition space dedicated to the research and development of sustainable solutions in yachting.
The Sustainability Hub will also host a variety of exhibitions relating to green renewable solutions and pro-environmental projects in yachting.
Yacht Design and Innovation Hub
Complementing the Sustainability Area will be the popular Yacht Design and Innovation Hub, where the world’s most renowned yacht designers convene to showcase their latest projects, with various presentations on design and eco-responsible projects in yachting taking place in a conference room upstairs (free access). This year, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub also welcomes the historic exhibitors of the Designer Gallery along the Louis Chiron bend of Port Hercules.
Adventure Area
Another new zone for 2022, visitors to the Adventure Area will find a huge array of tenders, all-terrain vehicles, nautical gadgets and equipment. These will be showcased in conjunction with a wide range of activities and services targeting the up-coming generation of superyacht clientele in response to the increase in demand by discerning yacht travellers seeking ever-more thrilling adventures and unique yachting experiences.
Dockside Area
The new Adventure Area will be located within the Dockside Area, home to the afloat exhibition of motor yachts and tenders on the Quai Antoine 1er, Port Hercule.
Please note that the Dockside area is only accessible to Discover, Sapphire and press passes on Wednesday September 28, with access to the general public from Thursday onwards.
Sailing Yacht Area
As in previous years, this area will be situated along the Quai l’Hirondelle, where visitors will be able to step aboard some of the most innovative and technologically advanced sailing yachts in the world, as well as meeting some of the esteemed builders and designers who help to create the magic.
Sapphire Experience
Introduced for the first time last year, the Sapphire Experience is a bespoke tour program for visitors interested in renting or buying a yacht, with a concierge team dedicated to creating a bespoke program of events tailored to take advantage of all there is to experience at the show in true VIP fashion; including scheduled visits on board yachts, attendance at gala evenings or private cocktails on board various luxury vessels. There is also an official Sapphire tender and courtesy car service.
In addition, there are dedicated VIP entrances and lounges for convenience and relaxation throughout the show.
How to get around the Monaco Yacht Show 2022
The show takes place entirely in Port Hercules, but there will also be a number of yachts available for viewing at anchor outside the port. A water taxi is available throughout the show, with seven pick-up and drop-off points conveniently located across the marina.
The official opening times for the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show are: 10.30am-6.30pm every day, except on Saturday when the doors open at 10am and close at 6pm.
What is the official MYS 2022 superyacht lineup?
Currently, with over 130 yachts set to attend this year’s show, including 74 yachts making their debuts in Monaco, the show promises plenty of standout vessels available to view.
One of the most exciting new yachts will be Lurssen’s 115m/378ft motor yacht AHPO . A recent addition to the charter fleet, she will be drawing in plenty of attention with her Nuvolari Lenard exterior styling and palatial interiors.
On the same dock, Golden Yacht’s latest offering in the shape of 88m (289ft) superyacht Project X will also be causing a buzz. Freshly delivered, show-goers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to step on board to admire her beautiful Massari-designed interiors, as well as her 7.5-meter by 3-meter glass-enclosed swimming pool on her aft main deck and vast beach club featuring comfortable lounging area and bar, alongside a wellness suite with Hammam and Finnish Sauna.
Another star of the show will be the 85m (279ft) luxury explorer yacht VICTORIOUS , who wowed visitors last year with her distinctive sleek lines culminating in a 2-meter bowsprit and impressive array of charter-rich features and family-friendly amenities, not to mention the luxury Rolls Royce perched on her helideck bow!
The 75m (247ft) superyacht KENSHÕ will also be making waves for those keen to experience her zen-calm interiors up-close. Launched earlier this year, the innovative vessel redefines the concept of space and layout, providing guests with the ultimate luxurious platform to relax, entertain and socialize onboard.

Where to eat at the Monaco Yacht Show 2022
In Port Hercules, there are a variety of options available for snacks and refreshments, including the Upper Deck Lounge bar & restaurant run by the renowned Fairmont Monte-Carlo, as well as the Sapphire Lounge – a VIP bar and dining experience open exclusively to Sapphire badge holders – both located near the Parvis Piscine entrance.
Monaco itself has no shortage of restaurants to suit every occasion and palate during the show. For something more casual, Rue Princesse Caroline is lined with different restaurants that are well-suited to a light bite.
In the evenings, COYA Monte Carlo is where the in-crowd head for Latin-American fusion and a warm reception. The cocktail menu is expansive, so be sure to try one of their specialties and soak up the buzzy vibes as the evening wears on.
If it’s a sophisticated meal you’re after, Nobu is the ultimate choice. Expect a luxurious backdrop, a refined Japanese menu and a sensational taste experience among fellow show-goers.
Where to party after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022
As ever, Buddha-Bar will be one of the most popular venues for post-show partying in Monaco. The restaurant-bar crossover is a regular stop-off for those looking to dine and dance to the soundtrack of live DJ sets.
Twiga has a similar vibe, with a stellar menu coupled with an unrivalled club scene later in the evenings. Expect Methusalems of champagne topped with sparklers, dazzling entertainment and a no-holds-barred party vibe.
Twiga will be hosting plenty of Monaco Yacht Show-themed parties over the course of the show, so you’d be remiss not to pay the venue a visit, even if it’s just for a cocktail on the terrace.
For a true taste of French Riviera party life, look no further than Jimmy’z. This iconic club will be in full swing over the course of the Monaco Yacht Show, and will be amping up the entertainment with live performances from dance troupes and deck-spinning DJs.
Where to relax after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022
After the show, take the time to unwind and soak up the last of the Mediterranean sun.
Nikki Beach Monte Carlo is still going strong on the roof of the Fairmont Hotel, and offers poolside lounging and a summery soundtrack throughout the day, offset by spectacular views over Port Hercules and the yachts at anchor opposite the marina.
A little outside Monaco in the small town of Eze lies one of the best-kept secrets in the South of France. Anjuna Plage occupies a thin sliver of beach, and boasts a premier restaurant, boutique shop and a laid-back vibe that makes it a fan favourite. Best accessed by yacht, it also has a roster of A-list clientele.
Where to visit after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022
The French Riviera is one of the most beautiful regions in the Mediterranean and has no end of things to see and do. In Monaco, visitors can explore the decadent Monte Carlo casino, browse the Private Collection of Antique Cars of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III or admire the incredible selection of marine life at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco.
Afterwards, stop by neighbouring Menton to visit Mirazur, a restaurant that was named the Best in the World for 2019. Then, pay a visit to the Val Rahmen Exotic Gardens for an afternoon of botanical bliss.
Head over to Nice for a day of sightseeing and walking the cobbled streets of the city, taking the time to explore the famous Matisse Museum and the pink palace of Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild.
Those looking to travel even further afield can stop by the spa at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes or take a boat ride out to the Lérins Islands outside the bay of Cannes , where you will find the famous Abbey and the superyacht hotspot of La Guerite, a beach club and restaurant on the island.

The coolest yachts in town for the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix
Every year, Monaco’s Grand Prix pulls in some of the fleet’s finest superyachts for a weekend of adrenaline-fuelled F1 action and A-lister events in the heart of the principality. Yachts moored stern to the circuit have a premium vantage point over the cars tearing around the track, while superyachts at anchor can enjoy all the Formula One buzz with the added benefit of privacy and seclusion. These are all the yachts to look out for at the 2023 event…
Phoenix 2 | 90m
Designed to fulfill a brief for an entertainment-led layout, Phoenix 2 is the ideal candidate for hosting guests during the Monaco Grand Prix. She has a good balance of cosy interior areas and open al fresco socialising spaces, including an enclosed winter garden that can host up to 120 guests. The 90-metre Lürssen is located in the Monaco anchorage close to the entrance of the port, and yacht-spotters can look out for her distinctive 5.4-metre phoenix figurehead on the bow.
Titiana | 73m
Charter machine Titania has secured a coveted trackside berth for the event, giving her guests the ultimate view over the cars roaring through Monaco. The main deck aft will be popular for guests looking for a shaded spot, while the sundeck has plenty of seating options, plus a 4.5-metre pool with a swim-up bar. Anyone seeking a respite from the Formula One will find plenty of interior spaces to enjoy, including an expansive main saloon and skylounge with drop-down cinema screen.
Lady Jorgia | 115m
Marking the largest yacht sale of 2023 so far, the iconic 115.1-metre Lürssen is making her first high-profile appearance as Lady Jorgia . The ex- Ahpo has an exterior by Nuvolari Lenard which is defined by sugar-scoop windows and large segments of black along the top of the superstructure. The design is said to be influenced by Ferraris, making her right at home in the Monaco anchorage.
Octopus | 126m
Octopus is fresh from a charter trip around Antarctica, and while her amenities list may make her better-suited to exploration, she is still a welcome addition to Port Hercules. The 126.2-metre yacht has an exterior by Espen Øino , with interiors by Monk Design and Jonathan Quinn Barnett . Octopus is home to seven tenders, a glass-bottomed underwater observation lounge, smoothie bar and a basketball court.
Aalto | 80m
Formerly known as Amevi , the 80-metre Oceanco giant Aalto is berthed in the centre of Port Hercule to catch the Grand Prix. The yacht has a recognisable Nuvolari Lenard exterior and interiors by the late Alberto Pinto , with an interior volume of 2310GT that’s sure to provide plenty of spaces to watch the races from indoors. The yacht was rechristened in July 2022 and her name now means “wave” in Finnish.
Joy Me | 50m
Joy Me , usually berthed in Cap d’Ail, is making an appearance in Port Hercules for the Grand Prix. She’ll be one of the most recognisable yachts at the event, with her custom red and white exterior and unusual eye motif — said to be the eyes of the commissioning owner’s daughter. The Croatian-built yacht 49.9-metre has masses of exterior areas for guests to make the most of, as well as a fun interior with plenty of modern artwork.
Lammouche | 44m
Fresh from her groundbreaking trials of a new type of biofuel, 44-metre Lammouche is a 2010 Sanlorenzo with a charter-orientated configuration. Highlights include a spacious sundeck bordered by glass bulwarks for uncompromising views over Monte Carlo.
Resilience | 65.5m
Resilience has been an active cruiser since her launch in 2021, showing up on the scene for the New Year’s Eve festivities in St Barths and now arriving on the scene for the Monaco Grand Prix. The 65.5-metre ISA yacht has a sporty design from Enrico Gobbi - Team for Design , and the Italian studio has worked to create a modern, yet comfortable interior with accommodation for a total of 14 guests.
Instagram's favourite charter yacht Loon is also part of the line-up of yachts attending the Grand Prix, berthed inside the port within easy distance of all the action. The 54.5-metre Newcastle Marine is usually found cruising the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean and putting her mammoth treasure chest of toys to good use, but she's now based across the pond. Her big sister, the recently-purchased Icon yacht Loon , is just up the coast in Marseille.
Cloud 9 | 89m
Cloud 9 marked one of the largest yacht sales of 2022 and she made her first public appearance under her new name at last year's Monaco Grand Prix. When she was known as Infinity , the Oceanco build was notoriously private – now it seems she’s spending a little more time in the limelight. She is listed for charter with Burgess and comes complete with expansive lounging spaces, a decadent beauty saloon and a main deck pool that measures almost 18 metres squared.
Lionheart | 90m
In 2016, Lionheart was launched by Benetti as the Italian shipyard’s new flagship and is the owner's third Benetti to bear the same name. The 90-metre motor yacht is no stranger to Monte Carlo, spending most of her time cruising the French and Italian Riviera from her home base in Port Hercules. Lionheart is currently berthed at the end of Quai Rainier.

Monaco , often associated with decadence, has many charms that often go unnoticed amid the rush toward the casinos and luxury yachts of Monte-Carlo, the destination’s most famous district. A closer look at this coastal enclave on the Mediterranean reveals more than its contemporary image would suggest. Neither distinctly French nor entirely Italian, this country encompassing less than one square mile is a place of intriguing complexity, urging visitors to stay and explore rather than merely pass through.
Visiting the country’s lesser-known areas—bustling markets, tranquil gardens, and architectural treasures—reveals the principality’s diverse cultural mosaic, exposing a deeper, more multicultural identity. Monaco is home to 139 nationalities and has its own unique language, Múnegu, a blend of Ligurian, French, Provençal, and Spanish. This intriguing mix adds layers to Monaco’s culture and venturing off the beaten path yields a richer, more authentic experience.
Eat and drink in the La Condamine District
La Condamine
To experience the traditional Monaco, explore the vibrant spirit of La Condamine . Its architectural style, characterized by arcades and colorful building façades, mirrors the typical style of the French Riviera. Stop at the market on the Place d’Armes, which also features café terraces and newspaper stands. Discover around 20 stalls in the market halls, offering regional produce and other specialties from Monaco, Italy, and beyond. Open daily, it also hosts traders, market gardeners, and florists. Don’t leave without trying some Monegasque specialties like socca , a kind of crepe made with chickpea flour.
Leave time to stop at La Distillerie de Monaco , the principality’s first and only distillery. It specializes in artisanal liqueurs like L’Orangerie, made using locally grown oranges. Enjoy it chilled, over ice, or mixed with prosecco for a refreshing Monaco spritz.
Walk through the Old Town
Monaco’s Old Town
Discover the Old Town , the historic district perched atop the famous Rock of Monaco, surrounded by views of the Mediterranean Sea. It’s the location of the Grimaldi family’s residence, the 13th-century Prince’s Palace , now open after recent renovations. Begin at the Place du Palais to watch the Changing of the Palace Guard —this synchronized military spectacle of precision and solemnity occurs daily at 11:55 a.m.
Stroll the narrow medieval lanes, making your way to the Club Bouliste Monégasque . Tucked away near the Oceanographic Museum , this unassuming restaurant offers genuine local dishes. You can sample traditional delights including barbajuans , a ravioli-like fritter filled with Swiss chard. It’s open to the public daily, even if you don’t play pétanque, and it’s the perfect way to savor some local culinary specialties.
The Saint-Martin Gardens , Monaco’s inaugural public garden since 1816, showcases Mediterranean flora and exotic species along steep, winding paths close to the palace. This green oasis offers several serene resting spots to take in the panoramic sea views.
Next door, find the Cathedral of Monaco , the eternal resting place of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace. Constructed in 1875 using limestone from La Turbie in southeastern France, this Roman-Byzantine masterpiece houses the tombs of former Princes, elegant artworks, and a retable by French painter Louis Bréa from 1500.
Experience the green spaces of Fontvieille
Fontvieille , Monaco’s westernmost district, is a comparatively recent addition to the principality compared to others. It was predominantly built on reclaimed land based on the design by Italian engineer Gianfranco Gilardini, making it one of the newer neighborhoods in Monaco. With its picturesque port adorned with boats and waterfront restaurants, Fontvieille invites strolls against the backdrop of The Old Town’s majestic cliffs.
A visit to Fontvielle is not complete without a stop at the Princess Grace Rose Garden . Conceived by Prince Rainier III in honor of his wife, this English-style garden also features olive trees and more than 315 varieties of roses. Then, discover the outdoor art gallery of the Fontvieille Sculpture Trai l; the pedestrian path encourages exploration of works by renowned artists like Rodin, Bourdelle, Léger, and more.
Hit the beach in the Larvotto District
Larvotto Beach
Beach lovers should make it a priority to visit Larvotto , part of Monte Carlo and located in the easternmost part of the principality. But first, explore the area around the Grimaldi Forum, the principality’s main convention and cultural center. Next, wander the tranquil Japanese Garden , designed by Yasuo Beppu, admiring the bamboo hedges, imported stones, meticulously pruned plants, and Zen features like ponds, waterfalls, and a tea house. Watch koi gracefully swim amid water lilies.
Japanese Garden
Larvotto is also where you’ll find Villa Sauber, an architectural gem from the Belle Époque. It was acquired by painter Robert Sauber in 1904, but its exact construction date remains a mystery. Under the ownership of the Monegasque State, it now hosts contemporary art exhibitions as part of the New National Museum.
Finally, enjoy the enchanting Larvotto Beach on Avenue Princesse Grace. This lovely seaside spot, which was recently renovated, features a shaded promenade and revamped beaches. Bask in the sun and dip your toes in the refreshing Mediterranean at one of the four private beaches: La Rose des Vents, Le Neptune, La Note Bleue, or Le Miami. Or enjoy ice cream from the Mullot parlor and savor it in the cool shade beneath swaying palm trees.
Admire architecture in the Exotic Garden District
Where the Alps meet the Mediterranean, find the Exotic Garden of Monaco, a more than 49,000-square-foot botanical garden clinging to a rocky cliffside. It’s known for its terraced gardens, Mediterranean views, and various succulents, including around a thousand cacti.
Next, head to Villa Paloma , a modern cultural center with lively art exhibitions that are now part of the New National Museum of Monaco. The exhibits inside the 19th-century villa blend contemporary creativity with fascinating history and beautiful gardens, offering an engaging experience for art enthusiasts.
Conclude your architectural exploration with a stroll westward along Boulevard du Jardin Exotique. The Simona Building, constructed in 2012 by architect Jean-Pierre Lott, has several distinctive features like green walls and a blend of vertical lines and curves using glass and metal. Nearby, Villa Troglodyte, also designed by Lott, ingeniously integrates a luxury home into a rocky promontory with minimal disturbance to the surroundings. Continue west to Villa Ispahan, distinguished by its Persian-style facade adorned with colored stained-glass windows and marble mosaics, and then ponder how these structures offer a glimpse into the principality’s hidden heritage.
Superyacht Chef Competition to bring together exceptional chefs
Nine contestants will take part in the competition on Thursday 4 April 2024.
The fifth edition of the Superyacht Chefs’ Competition is about to set sail. Organised by the Monaco Yacht Club in partnership with Bluewater, this major culinary event will celebrate the art of gastronomy at sea.
Under the watchful eye of Bernard d’Alessandri , Secretary General of the Monaco Yacht Club, and with the support of a host of industry professionals, this promises to be a thrilling edition.
Cookery classes in and around Monaco
Adaptability and creativity
Three-starred chef Glenn Viel, a fervent advocate of environmentally responsible cuisine, is heading up a prestigious international jury. He will be joined by famous names such as Marco Tognon, winner of the previous edition, and renowned chef Danny Davies, with over 25 years’ experience on board private yachts.
This year’s edition follows on from last year’s fabulous culinary event . Nine private yacht chefs will be competing: Paulo Ucha Longhi, Joelyanne Le Faucher, Mateusz Mitka, Margot Laurent, Enzo Di Gabro, Giacomo Seregni, Jérémie Gruson, Ava Faulkner and Melvin Costaglioli. Their creativity and adaptability will be put to the test during the competition.
The contest has all the right ingredients to ‘cook up’ a major event. The chefs will discover the secret ingredients of a mystery basket just before they start cooking. It won’t be ‘all plain sailing’ for the chefs, as the audience can decide to add an ingredient to the basket to throw them off balance.

Under the watchful eye of chef Duncan Biggs, they will also have to meet an anti-waste criterion, adding ‘a little spice’ to the competition. Spectators will also have a say, as they decide who deserves the best culinary presentation prize.
Beyond the competition itself, the Superyacht Chef Competition is part of the wider mission on the part of La Belle Classe Academy, Monaco Yacht Club’s training centre: to promote excellence in all aspects of yachting. So, get ready to be dazzled by extraordinary culinary creations at an event that guarantees a Mediterranean wave of flavours.
This essay is based on the recollections of Cameron Manley, 24, a news fellow at Business Insider who previously worked as a private tutor in Moscow and, following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Monaco. The names of students have been changed to protect their identity.
In late 2021, I started working for an international tutoring agency in Moscow.
The agency counted some of Russia's elite among its clientele — so I was quickly thrust into a world of private jets, guarded estates, and personal chauffeurs.
I worked in Moscow until Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, when I was relocated to Monaco.
We charged $150 per hour minimum for classes, but more experienced tutors and specific packages for private-school assessments or English-language testing would cost more.
Tutoring does not require any kind of formal qualification, but parents were still often happy to part with their cash as long as the tutors had a native-English accent and some connection to either the British private school system or some of the UK's top universities.
$150 was also small change for many of these families, which was reflected in the various classroom settings — Monaco penthouses, Moscow mansions, and yachts.
The money the Russian elite were willing to throw at young, inexperienced tutors was unbelievable — and frankly quite frightening.
I had acquaintances who worked as governors or nannies who were earning well into six figures.
Others were offered similarly extortionate salaries to spend their summers teaching on yachts in places like St. Barts in the Caribbean or sailing around the world.
I taught in luxurious villas and penthouse apartments
Often the children we taught, who were from four to around 18 years old, had private drivers who hurried them about in tinted Range Rovers or Mercedes-Benz cars.
In Moscow, many of our classes took place in Rublevka, an elite guarded estate in the west of the capital, where Russian President Vladimir Putin owns a home.
Many of the kids we taught lived in a world entirely different from any we had known.
A colleague of mine did after-school classes there with an eight-year-old boy called Ivan.
One week his family had been planning a weekend trip to get away from the capital: "I hope the weather isn't too bad so we can take the helicopter and don't have to drive," he said.
We also homeschooled two pupils: Alexei, 13, and his younger sister, Elena, 11.
The first time I met Alexei, he walked into our office sporting $1,000 Balenciaga trainers and a watch worth at least five times as much.
He was nevertheless a pleasant child but, like Ivan, appeared somewhat disconnected from reality.
In one class, he was shocked to hear that we didn't receive regular pampering from staff at home: "It's been seven months since you had a massage? I have a massage every day, I have my own massage therapist," he told us.
Elena was less communicative and didn't seem to enjoy the lavish lifestyle she had.
"What have I done to deserve this? I hate my life," she would often say.
My colleagues and I became increasingly concerned about her well-being as time went on.
She didn't enjoy classes alone and wanted to be with friends in a normal school.
But her parents insisted.
She seem tied to the life into which she had been born.
The job constantly surprised me
I met two types of parents in the job: Those who spent thousands of dollars on their children because they cared about them, and those who spent the money so that they didn't have to think about them.
I felt that many of the parents fell into the latter category.
Related stories
Frequently, we had little, if any, contact with the parents, and we would usually deal with nannies or drivers instead.
It felt like many of the parents found you to be an eye-sore in their luxurious lives.
Once, I had to teach a lesson at a seaside villa in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, an exclusive area between Nice in the south of France and Monaco.
The home was on a private road, and I entered through a large automatic gate that was littered with security cameras.
The house was spread out over two floors, with a swimming pool, a fully-equipped gym, a sauna, and a steam room.
When I arrived, they told me that the kids, aged four and six, had not finished their personal training session and that I would have to wait outside in the street.
Eventually the nanny said she would find me somewhere to sit "out of sight," so I was hurried into a large store cupboard in the furthest corner of the house. The kids strolled in about an hour later.
Some tried to get their children out of Russia after the invasion began
When the war in Ukraine broke out, a number of families came to us looking to find school placements for their children either in the West or in the United Arab Emirates , where many wealthy Russians fled at the outbreak of the war.
There was one family with three young children who were looking to find schools in Dubai.
Speaking to us in perfect English on Zoom with a background that boasted enormous paintings and palatial pillars, they seemed polite, well-mannered, and bright.
We later discovered that the kids were the grandchildren of a senior Russian politician who had played a major role in starting the war in Ukraine.
The irony was not lost on us that some of those who had played a key part in helping Putin initiate his brutal, unprovoked invasion were now trying to help their children escape Russia.
The children often brought up politics and the war
The company we worked for had explicitly told us to avoid discussing politics with the pupils, as the government was cracking down on protestors, and it could have put us and our pupils in danger.
But the children often brought the topic up themselves, their comments ringing with the ideology they had likely absorbed at home.
"Ukraine is ours, after all," Alexei told me in one class just after the invasion began in February.
Ivan, referring to a picture of Putin, once said, "Oh, he's amazing! Don't you think he's amazing?"
"You should open an office in Kyiv. It's beautiful there," one parent also wryly said to me.
There were occasional breakthroughs
We taught many different pupils but only one really seemed to appreciate just how lucky they were.
Elizaveta, 15, frequently expressed her discontent with Putin's Russia.
"We're killing thousands of innocent Ukrainians. It's awful," she once said.
That week, she had been kicked out of school for dyeing her hair and had asked her parents to book some additional classes so that she didn't fall behind.
Her parents were looking to send her to an English private school that September.
"The best thing I can do now is leave Russia," she told me. "That's the last option I have. Perhaps from abroad, I might be able to do some good."
Elizaveta was an anomaly, and most of the time, you had to settle for smaller victories.
I distinctly remember telling our homeschooled pupils that my colleagues and I had decided to leave Russia .
Elena seemed like she could not have cared less.
But Alexei looked genuinely upset.
It was as though the prism through which he saw the world had been, if not broken, then at the very least a little scratched.
