X One Design

The X One Design (XOD) was designed in 1907 with the first boat launched in 1909. It is 21-foot with a ¾ decked keel boat of carvel construction. A very strong boat, several launched in 1911 are still racing today. The design has proved itself over the years allowing sailors of all ages, from teenagers to octogenarians to race with equal success. Gradually, over the years, modernization has been approved, the biggest changes being Gaff to Bermuda rig and more recently the use of Epoxy being permitted, resulting in many of the earlier boats being rejuvenated and enabling them to match newer boats, not only for speed but finish as well. With numbers nearing 200 and all the boats based between Poole and Itchenor, it is the strongest South Coast One Design class.

The cost of ownership is not high and, with epoxy coated hulls, maintenance can be minimal or as much as you like to spend. X's have always outlived their owners, unlike many modern racing yachts which in less than 10 years lose their competitiveness, mainly due to their light construction.

Royal Lymington Yacht Club XOD Fleet

The Lymington XOD Fleet sails under the burgee of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club. The Harbour Authorities have established 34 heritage moorings for the class on the East side of the river, an impressive sight for all.  The racing is superb for all from gentle family sailors to Olympic hotshots.

The XOD is the largest keelboat racing fleet at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club with over 40 active boats. Racing is very competitive throughout the fleet. Our successful sailors are always willing to help those new to the class and those at the back of the fleet to find more speed. An XOD responds to finetuning and this tests everyone from time to time even successful owners have days of "go slows".

Tea is organised after both Saturday and Wednesday afternoon racing where competitors and race officers get together in a friendly atmosphere.

Join our regular racing at Royal Lymington Yacht Club

New take on old design

  • Elaine Bunting
  • July 10, 2009

A beautiful new XOD takes to the water - but will she be able to race?

What a beauty.

This is Xoanan, a brand new X One-Design masterminded by twins Ado and Stuart Jardine.

The new XOD was a volunteer winter project that XOD leading lights Ado and Stuart shared with fellow Lymington sailors David Alan-Williams, David Harris, Ian Burr, Chris Baldwick, Doug Rogerson and Bill Dunsdon.

What makes Xoanon different is that she is strip plank and construction, with glassfibre epoxy inside and outside. Designer David Alan-Williams computerised the lines and plotted Mylar sheets for build templates, and extra frames were added.

The boat was built for £10,000 and part of the point of the project was to show the cost-effectiveness of modern construction methods – the cost is a fraction of that needed to build a new XOD to traditional methods. The group is hoping to persuade the class to allow ‘progressive build methods’.

But the fly in the ointment for this lovely new yacht is that that the XOD class is proud of its heritage – including building traditions – and it’s doubtful if or when Xoanon could measure and race in class.

XOD class secretary Tina Scott tells me: [She] will never measure to current XOD Class Rules because they include construction details. For events open to all XODs, organising authorities require entries to meet the RRS for one design yachts and the XOD Class Rules, but Xoanon cannot meet these entry criteria.

There are some races where she has been accepted to race with the XODs, but it is very much a local decision.’

But Tina adds: ‘She looks a beautiful boat!’

That she does.

The photo shows the boat at her launch being sailed by a trio of Olympic medallists: Pippa Wilson, Ado Jardine and Nick Rogers.

An X is very affordable to buy with most boats being offered for sale at between £3,000 and £12,000.

” A boat that is crew friendly and affordable”

Maintenance costs will vary, depending upon location and whether the work is done by the owner or by a boatyard. Information on these can be obtained from the  local Division or our Suppliers webpage. Boats that have been epoxied, and many have, will require less annual maintenance.

No keel boat is cheap to run, but the X is a lot less expensive than many. And of course multiple ownership allows owners to divide the costs between them.
