Business name : Ischoda Yacht Club

Ischoda Yacht Club, one of the oldest clubs on Long Island Sound, was founded in 1886 as the Hallika-Wallika Club by a group of boatmen, mostly fishermen, as there was very little pleasure boating at that time. In 1901, while Norwalk celebrated its 250th birthday, it’s name was changed to the Ischoda Yacht Club, a name from the Mohawk Indian Tribe which meant “A campfire around which the peace pipe was passed”, and indicating the peaceful relations the white settlers in Norwalk always had with the Indians.The first meeting places of the club were in East Norwalk, then the center of the shellfish and fishing industries. The last clubhouse across the river was located just east of the present public launching ramps off Liberty Square. In 1915 the club moved to rooms on Water Street adjacent to the Washington Street Bridge where it was to remain for 40 years. At that time the club rooms were located on the second story and there was only one key to the club which was lowered on a string by the steward to the thirsty members anxious to get upstairs to the welcoming and well-stocked bar.Women (third class citizens at that time) were not admitted to the club rooms under any pretext. In 1955, the club realized that landlord Nelson Hayes was getting on in years and they must move or face a not-sogenerous landlord. Under the Commodore ship of Cliff Ferris, the present property was purchased from the Home Heating Company. The actual building was started under a new Commodore, Frank Bruno and upon his sudden death completed by acting Commodore John Solder. The clubhouse then consisted of the present bar and game room. The space now occupied by the Seabreeze room was then locker space. In 1956, two important events happened. The club was dedicated and for the first time women and children were welcomed. In the 60’s the club ran into a financial crisis but through the dedicated leadership of the Commodores at that time – Ed Keller, George Cejka and Dick Shanahan – and the loyal support of the membership, a steady financial course was attained.These days there is a deep fraternal feeling of fellowship among her members that makes it a true club and she is blessed by the many Tradesmen she has on board who continuously improve the old lady and make her a sturdy ship, not letting down the original founders of the club who believed it should always be a group of men and women joined together to work and play together in the light of the brightly burning campfire of peace.

Boating Traditions: America’s 100 Oldest Yacht Clubs

The development of yacht clubs in the 1800s is an important chapter of our boating and marina history in the U.S.—and tells us much about the country’s early yearning for nature and community.

The birth of organized boating, rowing, and sail-racing clubs in our country took place in the 1800s and many of these early yacht clubs are still in operation today.

If you’re a sailor, oarsman, or boater, you’re probably familiar with many yacht clubs around the country—but do you know which U. S. yacht clubs have the pedigree to lay claim to being the country’s oldest?

The first time I heard the phrase yacht club was during a weekend at our family camp on a lake in the Northern Tier of New York State, just outside Adirondack Park. As a boy, most of my weekends there were spent fishing, swimming, and boating, and at the neighboring marina I heard sailing stories about the St. Regis Lake Yacht Club, founded in 1897. (Not on the list here, it’s the 156th oldest yacht club in America.) I was and still am a powerboater—learning boating back then in an aluminum boat with a 7 1/2-hp outboard—but I was fascinated by the sailing stories I heard dating back to the turn of the 20th Century in New York’s Franklin County.

At Dockwa, our loose definition of a yacht club is:

  • Usually membership-owned and controlled by a board;
  • Can be exclusive, but many no longer are;
  • Can specialize in many different types of activities such as sailing, racing, cruising, and kids’ programs;
  • They do not always have paid employees and might be volunteer-based.

Many yacht clubs nationally use Dockwa as their dockage reservation-and-booking platform or for marina management. So recently we had some fun office chatter—because we all work remotely, it was actually digital direct messaging office chatter—about which of the country’s yacht clubs have been around the longest.

Without further ado, and giving a shout-out to International Burgee Registry , here is the list of the 100 oldest yacht clubs in the United States, in chronological order of their founding from one to 100, with links to those still operating.

This is my first time here!! We came early, so there was no one here which was great! The bartender knows how to serve a good drink! And the food was surprisingly good for a bar! Super friendly service and the scenery is great!! I have passed by on the boat several times and have always wanted to stop in. I'm so glad I came in for an early lunch. We will be coming back to check out the night scene!!

We eat here at least once a month. It's a great place to go on the water and have drink and sit out side during the summer. The steamed clams are why we go.They are amazing. Service is fabulous. Cod is really good. Steak is pretty good. Fish are all pretty good. In general the food is good. The place is on the water and it's a lovely view. Everyone knows everybody and is really friendly. You feel like your eating at your mom's house.

  • St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg restarts quest for municipal marina developer, operator

  • Colleen Wright Times staff

City officials are restarting a plan to find a private company to redevelop the municipal marina located on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront in exchange for letting it take over operations.

They announced the new 17-page request for proposals Friday morning. Bids are due July 14. A pre-proposal meeting will be held May 15.

This time, they’re specifically seeking firms that have five years of experience with saltwater marinas — a sticking point with a prior group that submitted a bid under former Mayor Rick Kriseman’s administration to do the same thing. Proposers could also apply to redevelop and operate Fresco’s Waterfront Bistro next to the marina.

A 2014 report recommended replacing 19 finger piers and 10 main walkway deck spans, as well as repairing concrete cracks, replacing degraded timber, making miscellaneous electrical repairs and rehabbing or replacing steel sheet piles. The prior group estimated it would cost $30 million for repairs.

The city envisions handing over operations to a private company through a lease to avoid spending tens of millions in taxpayer dollars. The company would collect rents for boat slips, giving a cut to the city.

“No matter how the agreement is constructed, we know that we need help in getting this done,” said St. Petersburg City Council member Gina Driscoll, whose district includes the marina. “I look forward to identifying a good partner to renovate the marina and preserve that asset on our waterfront.”

But the move to place a public asset on the prized waterfront under private control has given pause to some City Council members and the marina’s boaters and residents.

In a statement, City Development Administrator James Corbett called the marina “an anchor point of the Waterfront District.”

“This is just the next step in the revitalization of the marina and we look forward to finding a partner that sees the potential of this landmark in our community,” he said.

Officials are seeking a five-year lease agreement. Anything longer triggers a citywide referendum. The winning proposer could then request a public vote to allow a long-term lease of the property after finishing the marina’s redevelopment, or seek a new lease every five years subject to the City Council’s and mayor’s approval.

For groups seeking to also redevelop and manage Fresco’s, the city seeks a separate 10-year lease for the restaurant. The current lease on the restaurant expires next April.

“The physical condition of the restaurant is such that a complete replacement is envisioned (including seawalls, restaurant building and exterior seating areas),” the bid solicitation reads. “The ability to reimagine this location is desired.”

According to the request for proposals, the city wants the redevelopment to be completely funded by private-sector investment and/or marina user fees. The city does not plan on using taxpayer dollars for the redevelopment project with one exception: required seawall restoration for the central and south yacht basins.

“It is preferred that the selected Proposer be responsible for the actual seawall restoration work in concert with the redevelopment of the marina,” the bid reads.

Proposers are asked to specify how the redevelopment will be paid for and what their equity investment would be, in addition to any public funding required for the project. The city also seeks a 20-year cash flow analysis of the marina’s operations, including revenue to be earned by the city and planned slip rates and increases over the lease term.

Mayor Ken Welch said in January that the city would issue a new request for proposals to redevelop and manage the marina because “it seems like that’s what the council is supporting.” A supermajority of City Council members — six out of eight votes — is needed to approve a lease on the waterfront, under restrictions that are part of the city’s charter.

There are 660 boat slips in the central and south yacht basins between the St. Pete Pier and Demens Landing Park. The slips that belong to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and the Vinoy Marina are not a part of the city’s bid request. The marina serves year-round local residents and seasonal boaters, as well as commercial businesses, and has capacity for about 100 live-aboard residents.

The request for proposals asks for all existing marina staff to be given the opportunity to interview with the selected developer and operator to continue their employment. The selected firm must also maintain the existing mix of vessel sizes, including for small sailboats, business vessels and live-aboards. The city retains final approval rights over marina design and specifications.

“Marina slip rates will be established with an eye toward affordability for all users while staying market competitive,” the bid request said.

The request also asks proposers for renderings of the redevelopment along with a project schedule.
