If you are like me, going for a boat ride itself is an exciting endeavor. But for many, it’s just another recreational activity. You can make it more fun, adding games to play on a boat.

When it comes to making your boat ride fun. The only limit is your imaginations. If you are a boat owner, you should be doing just that to get the most out of your investment.

Whether you enjoy participating in different fun games or to watch from the stands. There is always something that will intrigue you, makes you compete or at least enjoy the moment.

While on land we have plenty of room to play just whatever we want. On the boat, you have the surrounding water. Which can bring a whole new dimension to the boat fun?

Whether you are hosting a boat warming party or it is just recreational boating with friends and family. We got you covered with our list of the most fun games to play on a boat.

In this article, I will list and explain games to play on a boat. For your convenience, I have classified them into two categories; indoor ( one that you can play on deck ) and outdoor ( in water ).

A ) Outdoor Water Sports

There are numerous types of water sports one can take part in. The best part is being surrounded by water there is plenty of things to do. While some are generic and easy others involve thrill and strength.

Either you are with friends or family there is something for you to do.

This can involve sport like; water basketball, jump deck contest, cornhole on the water, speed tubing, wakeboarding, pool noodle joust, water volleyball, and stomp rocket swimming fetch.

While some sports are quite safe for others you require additional safety. For example, you need to have a life jacket for everyone on board. You can buy one from amazon or in bulk ( Set of four – check price on Amazon ).

Water basketball is a good idea to enjoy pass time on a boating trip. Great for kids and family its both exciting and fun. The actual game is somewhat in between the water polo and basketball.

While played mostly in a swimming pool at a competitive level. It fit easily into the recreational environment of your boat. Just stop your boat, get inside the water and start playing.

You also need to split into teams, take positions and try to pass the ball through the basketball hoop. You can play it with or without life jackets; near or far from land.

All you need is to hook the basketball hoop on a gunwale or the side railing of the boat. Not just relax and enjoy the game while everyone else in the water tries hard to beat the other team.

This one is rather special as of all Games To Play On A Boat; I personally find it most exciting and fun! It’s much similar to regular tubing but not exactly the same.

Most people are familiar with tubing in which you toe a tube with the help of a rope tied to the boat. It is called both relaxing and exciting at the same time. Almost everyone likes to enjoy a ride on the tube.

But what if you can simply add more thrill and excitement to the game. Rather than going for a regular tubing approach try speed tubing. It’s physically challenging and causes a sudden adrenaline rush.

Causing thrill and feeling of enjoyment especially when you are playing in a team. It simply involves towing two or more tubes at the time but at a greater speed around the lake.

The one team that manages to survive and does not fall into the water before the other wins. Considering the challenge involved I suggest to wear one life jacket for each; just in case to be safe.

Definitely not for amateurs who do not like to try something new. Wakeboarding is popular among young people who love the thrill and does not hesitate to go a little too far.

Developed from a combination of water sports like water skiing, surfing, and snow-based boardsports. It involves a wakeboard and a towing rope. Unlike most other watersports it’s relatively easy to learn.

Here your lower body is turned perpendicular to the boat direction. It is vital in this sport to stay afloat at the start. So wearing a professional life jacket or vest is a must after the board itself and the boots.

How to get up on a wakeboard:

• When you are starting do not fight the board
• Make sure the rope is on top of the boat and get in the couch position.
• Do not make the mistake to stand up too early otherwise you will standup and sink. So be very patient.
• Keep both hands on the handle of the tow rope as you slowly try to keep the board on its edge as the boats move.
• Do not resist and let the boat lift you.
• Now slowly turn the board putting your best foot forward.
• Now move side to side riding with your hand kept inside. There is no harm in keeping your hands outwards but keeping them inward helps with control.

This one is that game that you can easily play on a large deck or in water. Not to mention you do not need a large space for this game. But I personally prefer to play in the water.

Since its a two-player game there is no problem as such; for the whole team to get wet. You will always have enough players to play even if you do have enough players on board.

Take out your foam noodles, place the floating water mat into the water. Now joust! Once on the mat, each player will try to knock the other outback into the water. You may or may not need a life jacket.

There are many good-sized floating mats available that you can use. I would suggest buying 4-5 6 x 6 Feet mats and grouping them together. This way others can enjoy while the two will compete.

If there is something else I personally like to play on a family boat trip is water volleyball. Intex Pool Volleyball net is easy to inflate and came in with its own ball.

So unlike in water basketball, you did not need to buy a separate ball for the same. The best part is you can inflate this with your own mouth; meaning no need to buy or have an additional air pump.

You may think since it tends to float a bit; it is better to play in calm waters. But one can also make it anchor to its position. The pole bases come with anchor weights which makes it stick to its position.

The rules to play are similar to ordinary volleyball; with one exception. Here there is no such case as “ball out” in the middle of the water. Grab your friends and family for hours in this fun game.

My younger brother had stomp rockets for more than a year now. It never crossed into my mind that it can be played on a boat trip; unless I read something related on the internet just by luck.

Must say we tried this on our own on a boat trip with the family. I must say everyone who played fall in love with this game. Yes, kids take a bigger interest in this game but its still worth trying for adults.

You need to set the stomp rocket on the deck. Now stamp down on it with your stronger foot to fire. You will be surprised to see how far can this can actually go in the water.

Once fired two or more players will hop into the water to compete. The one who can bring back the stomp rocket back to the boat wins. The game is about speed, power, and competition.

If you are for a boat party that lasts for more than 6 hours; I would recommend adding kayak racing competition for the day time. It’s refreshing and fun to do especially in a group.

You can make your own house rules, race distance, participants, etc. Every time we ( I and my friends ) go organize a small boat party; we ask two participants to hop into the water.

Then we give each of them a kayak and anchor the boat some distance apart. Now the game is “who will reach to the boat first will win”. That is always better than solo kayaking.

I suggest not to bring more than 2-3 kayak on the boat as it will negatively affect the overall experience in the boat party. So bring them on board and have more fun!

B ) Indoor Games To Play On A Boat

There are numerous indoor games one can play on the boat. Either its the boat party or recreational boating trips; it fits well with the situation and bring more fun to the trip.

Far off it may look just other versions of a popular kids game, but up close each game has a twist.

That means that the very same games will become more fun to play in a group or with family on a boat than it uses to on land. Even when you are getting bored in between the boat trip; these games come in as a rescue.

Either way, if you are not kind of an outdoors person or just want to take a break from the sun. These games can be a great deed to spend some time and feel good about it.

You better be prepared if going for a boat trivia quiz competition. This is a kind of game that can be played individually or in a team. It’s so popular that official trivia competition is organized in parties, cruise, and events.

These games help expand your knowledge, have a discussion and healthy debate with other participants all while having a fun time playing. This can include topics ranging from sports, history to science.

While the average version of the trivia quiz can feel a little too easy; there are always topics and questions to add that challenge your knowledge. For your help, there are always apps available on both stores ( Apple + Android ).

In fact, some of the most interesting ones I came with are questions related to different types of boat , marine terminology , safety rules/equipment and parts of ship or boat .

Overall it’s a great game to play that not just test each other knowledge; but also build a better bond, reduce cortisol level ( stress ) and acts as a perfect cross trainer for our brain.

One of the crowd’s favorites, It can be a great hit for a boat party. But before you begin I must admit; I was never a true believer of this game or getting drunk but appreciate the social aspect of this game.

In case you are with kids and family simply replace the beer with water or soft drinks. It will still be great fun to play and a great social experience. The game revolves around throwing ping balls into the cups.

The object of the game is to eliminate all cups of the opposite team before the other team does. In the process every time the opposite side manages to remove one; you need to finish off the content inside the cup.

This game is really easy to set up, requires 20 solo cups, two ping balls, a long table or similar structure, two participants and lots of soda/water/beer depending on how you will play.

Board games can be a little fussy and odd to play on a boat party or recreational boating trip. But there is nothing better than this to pass time and play with your family.

Out on a boating adventure, we already have baggage to bring so many things. So I personally do not want to ask you to bring different board games along on the boat.

When it’s chilly on deck, there’s nothing more fun than hunkering down in a cozy cabin with a good boat game. Here are our 7 all-time favorite indoor boat games.

1. BOWDITCH BALDERDASH

Age: 12+, 4-6 players, Time: 20-60 minutes

What it is:

A word game where players invent bogus nautical definitions.

What you need:

• Pens or pencils
• Scrap paper
• A glossary from a nautical reference book like Chapman’s Piloting & Seamanship or The American Practical Navigator ‘Bowditch’.  You can download ‘Bowditch’ for free here . There are also some fun lists of nautical terms online that you could use.

How it works: 

• Each turn, one player is the chooser. The chooser browses the nautical glossary and selects an obscure word (e.g. “blather”) , then announces it.
• The chooser writes the definition on a scrap of paper (e.g. “Blather – Very wet mud of such nature that a weight will rapidly sink into it.”). All other players write down their own bogus definitions for the word on scraps of paper and hand them to the chooser.
• The chooser reads out all of the bogus definitions along with the true definition. The other players guess which definition is the correct one.
• Points: A player gets a point if they guess the correct definition, and a point for every player who guessed their bogus definition. The chooser only gets a point if nobody guesses the correct definition.
• The position of chooser rotates one seat clockwise every turn. Once everyone has been chooser a round is complete.

2. SETTLERS OF CATAN: SEAFARERS , EXPLORERS & PIRATES

Age: 12+, 3-4 players, Time: 90-120 minutes

What it is :

The nautical extension packs for Settlers of Catan – one of the best boat games for strategists!

How it works:

The wildly popular, Settlers of Catan has sold more than 18 million copies worldwide since its initial release in 1995.There are two nautical extensions to choose from . In the Seafarers expansion you build ships and shipping routes along the sea and connect islands where you may build settlements. In the Explorers & Pirates extension you set out for uncharted areas where you must maneuver around dangerous pirate lairs.

3. SALTY SPEED SCRABBLE

Age: 12+, 2-6 players, Time 10-60 minutes

Speed scrabble with a nautical twist: each player must have a nautical word in their Scrabble grid. This fast paced game is one of the best games to play on a boat because it takes up so little space.

• The tiles from a Scrabble set (you do not need the board)
• Players sit in a circle with all of the Scrabble tiles face-down in the center of the circle.
• Each player chooses seven tiles.  The game starts on the word “go” and everyone turns over their pieces.
• Each player builds their own individual Scrabble grid and spells as many words as quickly as they can (all words must be interconnected).
• Once a player has used up all of their tiles, they shout “two more” . Everyone grabs another two tiles from the pile . This is repeated until all of the tiles are used up.
• The first person to use up all of their tiles is the winner. The nautical twist: a player can only win if they have at least one nautical word (e.g. “boat” or “mast”) in their Scrabble grid. 

4. NAUTICAL TRIVIA

Age: 12+, 2-6 players, Time 40-80 minutes

Boat games don’t get much better than trivial pursuit. Test your nautical knowledge on topics like navigation, seamanship, visual signals, and nautical terminology. 

What you need: 

• The Nautical Trivia Game
• OR, write your own questions
• Divide the group into two teams.
• The person with the most sea miles picks the first card and reads the question to the other team.
• If the team answers correctly they get a point, if not they get no points.
• The team with the most points at the end of the deck wins.

5. BATTLESHIP GAME

Age: 7+ , 2 players, Time: 20-40 minutes

High stakes on the high seas! A two-player battleship themed game where you try to guess the location of your opponent’s warships and sink them. There is a paper and pencil version of this game that dates back to World War I but if you grew up in the ’90s then you’ll probably be familiar with the plastic board game marketed by Hasbro.

In the Hasbro version of this classic boat game, players use portable battle stations to seek and destroy each other’s battle ships. To play the original paper and pencil version:

• Each player starts with two 10 x 10 grids
• An aircraft carrier – 5 squares long
• A battleship – 4 squares long
• A submarine – 3 squares long
• A destroyer – 3 squares long
• A patrol boat – 2 squares long
• The second grid (which is blank at the beginning of the game) represents the opponent’s battlefield .
• One player will call out a square by referencing its row and column (e.g. B7), thereby firing a missile at the square. The opposing player must call “hit” if any part of one of their ships is positioned on this square.  They mark the “hit” by placing an “x” on the B7 square in their own battlefield. The attacker will also place an “X” on their blank grid to record the hit.
• The attacking player continues to fire missiles (guess) until they miss . When a player “misses”, the turn passes to the other player.
• The first person to destroy all of the opponent’s ship by hitting each square they occupy, is the winner of the game.

6. CRIBBAGE – A PIRATE’S PURSUIT

Age: 7+ , 2-4 players, Time: 30-60 minutes

Cribbage is an English card game that dates back to the 17th century and has long been a popular game on boats. Cribbage boards have been found in the wrecks of pirate ships and today cribbage is the “official” game of the American submarine service.  

• A deck of playing cards

7. HELMSMAN’S HEADS UP

Age: 6+ , 4-8 players, Time: 30-60 minutes

Guess the word on the card on your forehead from your friends’ clues before the timer runs out! This is a great game for a boat party.

• “Heads Up” Android or IOS app
• OR, a pen and paper

The Heads Up app works displaying a word when you hold your phone or tablet to your forehead . Your have to guess what the word says based on the clues that the other players give you. The app comes preloaded with 40+ themed decks on topics like celebrities, movies, and animals but you can build your own custom decks. Simply add a bunch of nautical words (e.g. “starfish”, “pirate”, “baggywinkle”) and let the fun begin. One of the cool features of the app is that it can record hilarious videos of the game while you’re playing.

You can of course play a low-tech version of this game by writing the terms down on paper cards and having players draw from a pile and hold them to their head.

For most of us, boating is a recreational activity . Sure, there's an exception for professional fisherman, cargo tanker crews and members of the Navy. But even they might love recreational boating with family and friends in their free time.

Recreational boating is a far cry from boating for work and national security. In other words, it's supposed to be fun. But merely motoring around on a boat all day might not be some people's idea of fun. 

Kids, and adults, tend to get bored if there's no activity to do aside from sit on the boat and look at the water. Even for those who love all things nautical, and are perfectly content to sit peacefully at the helm or on the deck , there's no reason not to make each aquatic outing even more enjoyable for guests aboard.

With a few great boat party game ideas , you can make your next trip out on the bay, downriver or across the lake one of your most enjoyable excursions yet.

First: How to Stay Safe When Playing Boat Party Games

Being on a boat isn't an inherently dangerous activity at all, provided you and everyone else aboard knows the basics of safety, uses good common sense and watches out for each other.

Certain activities that might be very low risk on land can be more dangerous on a boat, including party games of all sorts.

Since this includes many of the boat party game ideas we'll be talking about here, be sure to follow summer boating tips and all the usual boating safety rules, including  keeping an emergency kit on board .

Flotation Devices at the Ready

So, you and the gang are enjoying a water skiing competition or a lively game of Twister (much harder on a boat, by the way, and potentially much more hilarious). Any of these boat party games might lead to someone falling unexpectedly into the water.

When you're playing any games near water, you better have flotation devices and line at the ready, if not already strapped onto each person.

Safety in Numbers

Your boat, whether it's an 18-foot pontoon boat or a 72-foot yacht, is rated to safely accommodate a certain amount of people. That is to say, there's a maximum number of people to keep in mind. Don't go over that limit. It's all fun and games until the boat tilts over or capsizes and people fall overboard.

Moderation Is Key

Let's not be naive and pretend people never drink alcohol on boats. In fact, many people drink more booze aboard a boat than back on land. Even if the games are family-friendly, and you've got the kids around, there's nothing saying you can't bring along a few beers.

If you're staying moderate in your imbibing, and you're making sure that at least one person remains sober to steer the boat and help out in case of an emergency, a bit of drinking is fine.

Even so, everything in moderation. Even a drinking game can be enjoyed in moderation: Just take smaller sips, dilute the cocktails or choose a very low-ABV beer. You'll be able to enjoy your boat games longer, avoid awkward situations and stave off seasickness .

The Great Boat Races

So, you're on a motor boat and the boat is out on the water. All you need for a great time is a tube or a pair of waterskis. Or a wakeboard. Or a kneeboard. Or anything else that floats and can be towed by a boat. Not much fun trying this stuff at the dock, FYI. I tried. A tube tied to a dock or anchored at the shore just isn't the same.

While towing two wakeboarders,  water skiers  or tubers at the same time can be dangerous unless those holding the line are quite skilled, you can use time trial style races to have lots of fun.

If you're going with a tube, I'd recommend the Airhead AHBL-12 Blast tube (check price on Amazon)  because four handles are better than two for hanging on.

1. Fastest on the Water

Pick two points - such as anchor buoys , other boats or points on shore - and see which paired captain and water skier (or tuber, or wakeboarder, etc.) can span the distance fastest without anyone falling over.

2. Hang Ten or Twenty or More

This one can bring out the devil in the person at the wheel of the boat. Tow your water skier or tuber across a veritable obstacle course of anchor buoys or wake waves in an attempt to make 'em fall and see which tuber or boarder stays up the longest.

Target Practice

If there's one thing that's agreed on pretty much universally, it's that trying to throw one thing into another thing is fun. From carnival game stalls to professional basketball courts, we humans spend a lot of time trying to hit targets (nets, cans or dartboards) with objects we throw.

As it turns out, this can be even more fun in the water while anchored out . And those diving tosses certainly hurt less when you land in water, too!

3. Bombs Away

Trail a tube with a cutout center behind your boat and see who can toss the most balls into it accurately. Now, the Airhead AHBL-12 Blast tube  I recommended earlier won't quite work for this since there's no hole cut out in the middle.

Instead, go for a simpler standard floating tube like the classic Tube in a Box (check price on Amazon) . You can use soccer balls, volleyballs or whatever you'd like, just so long as it floats.

Fon't forget to collect all the balls when you're done. Another option is to get yourself an inflatable cornhole game (check price on Amazon)  that's made to be played on the water.

4. Catch a Wave

What's more fun than trying to toss a ball into a tube? Trying to toss a ball to a human who's being zipped along over the water  on a tube. Or on waterskis, if the sportsman or sportswoman is coordinated enough to ski using one hand and make a one-handed catch with the other.

The classic elementary school balls are bright and easy to see, they float and they're soft enough not to hurt on impact. They were designed for kids, after all.

Board and Card Games on Board

Here's a news flash: Fun games are fun wherever you choose to play them. That means that the very same board games you love playing on land can also be quite enjoyable to play when you and your friends or family are out on your boat.

It can be rather frustrating when all the pieces go sliding off the chessboard right before your successful King's Gambit or when your round of Texas Hold 'Em ends up with a soggy mess of ruined cards thanks to some unexpected waves.

So, get creative and take advantage of some truly clever travel games that are on the market.

5. Magnetic Chess  or Magnetic Checkers

You can find a plethora of chessboards and checkerboards that use magnetic pieces and are perfect for playing with on rolling waves. Often, these games are one and the same, with both chess and checkers pieces included.

6. Travel Scrabble

This is a classic word game, and my personal favorite game on land or sea . It's available in a compact package that uses all plastic components (no worries about waves) and with pieces that click into place (no worries about that word with the X and J slipping off the board).

7. Plastic Playing Cards

Did you know that there are waterproof playing cards (check price on Amazon) ? Well, there are. In fact, there are lots of different options out there.

The most fun option is probably the Swimline Game Station set (check price on Amazon) which is an inflatable game set that comes with a game table, chairs with cup holders and waterproof playing cards. 

Get a deck, and you'll always be ready for poker, rummy or Go Fish (errant sea spray or a spilled rum and Coke notwithstanding).

9. Theme Music

Your boat trip will be all the more fun if you and your fellow sailors pick theme music to underscore the adventure. And we're not talking about some seaman's ditty, we're talking about a mix of disco hits, 50s music, 60s rock or 90s grunge.

Plan ahead and make a great playlist and your time out on the water will be that much more memorable and fun.

Yacht is a classic dice-rolling game that inspired the hit game Yahtzee by Milton Bradley. Play online against random opponents, create a game with your friends, or practice against the computer.

In Yacht, you need to make specific combinations that score the most points possible at the end of three rolls. At the end of the game, whoever has the most points wins. 

Every turn, you have three dice rolls. After your first roll, you can choose to hold dice. The dice you hold will not be part of your next roll. After three rolls, pick a category on the scorecard to lock in your points. If you aren't sure what each category means, tap on the name to get more details.

HINT: If you score 63 or more points in the upper section of the scorecard, you'll earn a 35-point bonus.

Probably the biggest factor in this dice game is whether or not you are able to get the 35-point bonus. Because of this, you should try and focus on the upper section in order to work toward that bonus. 

Make sure to keep your chance section clear for as long as you can. It is nice to have a safety net that can catch you if you have a bad roll. 

Every turn, you have three dice rolls. After your first roll, you can choose to hold dice. The dice you hold will not be part of your next roll. From this throw you can again lock some dice and then you can make a final throw. After this throw you can choose which combination you get in the scorecard.

DeSantis details alarming find aboard Haitian migrant boat seized off Florida coast

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Friday that state law enforcement had intercepted a vessel coming to the Florida coast carrying dozens of Haitian migrants, as well as firearms, drugs and night vision gear.

"Our Florida Fish and Wildlife offices interdicted a vessel that had 25 illegal immigrants, potential illegal immigrants from Haiti in their boat. In their vessel they had firearms, they had drugs, they had night vision gear and were boating very recklessly, which would potentially endanger other folks," DeSantis said, adding that the interdiction had occurred "recently" in the last few weeks.

"That vessel was interdicted near the Sebastian Inlet and those illegal aliens were turned over to the Coast Guard for deportation," he said.

DESANTIS SENDS SOLDIERS, AIRCRAFT TO ‘PROTECT’ FLORIDA FROM ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS BOATS AMID HAITI UNREST

DeSantis made the announcement at a press conference in which he also signed three pieces of legislation to deter illegal immigration into the Sunshine State.

The Republican governor had earlier this week announced an increase of personnel and aircraft to the Florida coast in light of unrest in Haiti and the potential for an increase in migration via the sea from the conflict-hit country.

The Caribbean nation has seen a significant escalation in violence as gangs have overrun the capital, burning police stations and attacking the main airport. Gangs have also raided some of the largest prisons, releasing thousands of inmates. 

DHS WARNS HAITIAN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARRIVING BY BOAT FACE ‘IMMEDIATE REPATRIATION’ 

The deployment in Florida includes 48 additional National Guardsmen with four additional helicopters, 39 officers from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, 30 additional Florida Highway Patrol officers with aircraft and drones, and 23 additional officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission with eight additional seacraft, according to DeSantis' office.

He stressed on Friday that this had been going on for a while, and this was an increase in enforcement and not a new operation. He said that from Jan 2023 last week, officials had assisted the Coast Guard with the interdiction of 670 vessels carrying over 13,500 illegal immigrants.

"The message is the last thing you should want to do is get on a boat and think you're going to come through from any of these islands to get to the state of Florida," DeSantis said. "The most likely scenario is you'll be stopped, and you will be returned to your country of origin."

"It's a hazardous journey, it’s not worth doing, and we have the resources to continue to keep the people of Florida safe."

On Tuesday, Rebecca Zimmerman, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Hemispheric Affairs, told lawmakers that the Pentagon is "alert" to the possibility of a mass migration event, but it has also not yet seen large numbers.

"I think you’re right that the driving conditions in Haiti could very well press more people," she told Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. "We recently approved some additional assistance we could provide to the Coast Guard."

The Department of Homeland Security has also said it is monitoring the situation, but has stressed that migration flows in the Caribbean remain "low." It also warned that those crossing face being turned back to their country of origin.

"U.S. policy is to return noncitizens who do not have a fear of persecution or torture or a legal basis to enter the United States. Those interdicted at sea are subject to immediate repatriation pursuant to our longstanding policy and procedures. The United States returns or repatriates migrants interdicted at sea to The Bahamas, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti," a spokesperson said.

On Friday, DeSantis also signed three pieces of legislation related to immigration. One increased the maximum sentence for people driving without a license. Another enhances penalties for crimes committed by illegal immigrants who return to the country after deportation, while the third bill states that no jurisdiction can recognize IDs that are distributed by other states to illegal immigrants.
