- Early History
Publication
CANIM was commissioned by Col. C. B. Blethen, then publisher of the Seattle Times and the Commodore of the Seattle Yacht Club. The derivation of the name is from the Chinook Indian tribe of the Northwest and means Big Chief's canoe: one of the great cedar canoes of the coastal tribes. Built in 1930, CANIM was an immediate head turner.
CANIM was designed by L.E. (“Ted”) Geary, a versatile designer with many great sailboats and commercial boats to his credit. He developed quite a following for his fantail motor yacht designs. Ranging from 60’ to 122’, they shared the Geary look – purposeful plumb bows, elegant fantail sterns, well-proportioned deckhouses and graceful sheer lines.
CANIM is one of a series of four 96 footers, designed by Geary and built at Lake Union Dry-docks in Seattle, WA between 1928-1930. While each of these boats is uniquely different, they all feature the signature Geary hull lines and are regarded as sister ships. These four boats represent the best of their era:
Built by the very finest Northwest timber (virgin Douglas fir), they were a combination of elegant form, heavy scantlings and could go anywhere, even in the toughest weather. As a testament to the quality design & craftsmanship, each vessel is still in operation today.
The larger family of Ted Geary fantail yachts includes four more vessels built between 1926 and 1929.

Lake Union Drydock Company is well known for the many exemplary motor-yachts constructed in the yard during the 1920s. Leslie Edward Geary designed many of these luxurious vessels after he broke off his business allegiance with Norman J. Blanchard and his yard in 1923. Among Geary commissions completed by Lake Union Drydock and Machine Works were the twin yachts CANIM and ELECTRA , PRINCIPIA , BLUE PETER , and in 1938, the 135 foot STRANGER . The R-Class sloop, PIRATE, also designed by Geary and constructed by the yard in 1926, established a distinguished racing career. Other notable yachts constructed in these pre-war years by the yard include CIRCE, and CANCO.
In 1941 the company went into a joint venture with Puget Sound Bridge and Dredge and operated as Associated Shipbuilders. The Lake Union yard built approximately 16 wooden mine sweepers and employment peaked at approximately 1000 during this period.
The company was again reorganized in 1947, becoming the Lake Union Drydock Company under the new ownership of Harry B. Jones and George Hobert (Hobbie) Stebbins. Stebbins had been the yard's wartime general manager. The company remains under the same family membership today with a stable workforce of around 100. The company now specializes in ship maintenance and restoration, retaining many of the tools used and craftsmen skilled in wooden vessel construction.

Yacht News YF News Editor
The history of the Canim is an interesting with her other near-looking sisters. Canim was built in 1930 is is one of four 96 foot ling sister boats built in the '20s. She was built at Lake Union Drydocks in Seatle and still exists today in pristine fashion. This is as a result of a 2002 major restoration This beautifully built and crafted yacht was built at a time when 96 foot yachts were considered to be large. Her classic attributes definitely turned heads back then and even to this day. Her straight bow and classic fantail with plenty wooden accents gear towards the classic feel. Today, the Canim relives the tale of her 'yacht-hood' and then some. She has been outfitted to pay homage to her past as well as cater to the modern realm she is presently in. The Canim features a Lower, Main and Top-Deck in which guest can browse. The Lower-Deck has been fitted out with accommodation. One Master-Suite and two guest rooms greet guests on arrival below. Tastefully outfitted with quality woods, materials and finishes, the accommodation for the guest is welcoming. The Master has a large bed, lockers and drawers for storage as well as an en-suite head. The guest cabins have a head as well as double beds, storage and shower as well as heating and air conditioning throughout all accommodation. The dedicated and hardworking crew also have room for themselves. The crew cabins are designed and appointed in a similar fashion to the guest cabins. If one took the stairs in the crew area, you would arrive in the forward part of the saloon on the Main-Deck. On the Main-Deck, the highlight has to be the beautifully crafted saloon. Original pieces from the 1930's still exist on the Canim and even where they aren't any, faithful reproductions have been manufactured. The Saloon features Burmese teak of the highest quality. Hand made furniture as well as precisely fitted leather upholstery for the seating areas have been accomplished. A Canim Yacht Picture Aside from the space being air conditioned, it boasts home entertainment systems, bar, beverage center and so on. Sharing the Main-Deck space is the galley and a day head! On to the Top-deck. The Top-Deck shares the wheelhouse and open air aft deck. The wheelhouse is fitted with modern navigation equipment while keeping a nostaligic flair in mind. The deck out side features over 800 square feet of entertaining, relaxing and lounging space. A bounty of lounge chairs can be set up with tables for a diversified setting. In conclusion, the Canim represents a throwback to an era long gone. However, she gives the oportunity for the nostalgia to be relived. Carefully executed, the outfitting of the Canim has been done to keep the period in mind but offer modern amenities of the times. At 96 feet, she was considered a big yacht but in today's world she is small. Look on the interior and you will find top-quality finishes systems and materials that would wow any person. *** LOA: 96.40 feet BOA: 18.10 feet Draught: 7.60 feet Displacement: 89 tonnes Engines: 2 X Cummins 325 HP Speed: 10 knots Fuel: 2,400 Gal Water: 800 Gal Design: Ted Geary Year: 1930; (major refit in 2002) http://www.canim-yacht.com/main.html http://www.canim-yacht.com A Canim Yacht Picture
