Baia Yachts History

Baia Yachts’ history begins in 1961 with Mericraft, a small facility producing wooden boats in Naples. In 1968, the company relocated to Baia, a port on the Gulf of Naples with an established seafaring tradition that provided an abundance of talented artisans. Management problems threatened the completion of a restoration project for the Capasso family, and in 1972, the Capassos purchased the shipyard and rechristened it Cantieri di Baia. The company launched their revolutionary yacht Pascià in 1997, a vessel notable for her wide round stern, fiberglass structure and hull, and elegant teak decking and interior.

1980 marked a turning point in Baia production, when the company began making boats entirely out of counter molded fiberglass. Their new motoryacht, the B81, which sat low in the water and featured an attractive line, enjoyed such popularity that the company went on to produce 106 models over the next 10 years. The 1983 launch of Baia’s new motor yacht series B50, a fast yacht with brilliant performance and elegant sleek lines that was extremely popular in the American market, propelled the company to international recognition.

Baia made the strategic decision to concentrate on the production of large-sized Open superyachts in 1986, in a move to meet rising domestic demand and spread into new markets. The company’s B80 superyacht, released six years later, was well-received by the international community; its renewed technologically advanced version Open cruiser sails the seas at 50 knots to this day. The same year the company joined the world of cabin cruisers with the production of their first 105′ Baia super yacht.

The next several decades saw Baia Yachts continuing its foray into international markets as it opened dealerships around the world. The Italian shipyard introduced several innovations to the field, including a 48′ “Coupe,” the first Convertible of the Sea, and the Italia 70, a vessel with a back door that retracted into the ceiling to create enormous open usable space on the main deck. Baia’s ongoing research and development of original technologies and materials ensures their vessels are consistently on the forefront of design. They currently produce an entire line of cruisers, cabin cruisers, fast cruisers and fast commuters ranging from 43 feet to over 100 feet that thrill with the blend of high performance and beauty that is uniquely Baia.

Baia Yachts, situated in the Gulf of Naples is one of Italy 's leading companies producing a wide variety of fast luxury motor yachts and open style sport yachts which are excellent for private use or as charter yachts. The shipyard’s range includes cabin cruisers, cruisers, fast cruisers and fast commuters, from 43 feet to 100 feet and over.  Latest technology, sleek, elegant and sporty lines, speed and high performance can be used to describe all Baia superyachts.

Each of their boats have been hand crafted with passion, dedication and great attention to detail. All of the staff are highly skilled, from fibreglass experts to interior designers. Baia Yachts' research and testing of new technologies and materials guaranties, that their motoryachts are constantly improving and evolving in terms of design, performance, versatility and comfort.

The shipyard’s history goes back to 1961 when a small facility in Naples, Mericraft, started their production of wooden day cruisers. In 1968 Mericraft trans-located to the Gulf of Naples. In 1972 the Mericraft shipbuilding company was purchased by the Capasso family who named the shipyard Cantieri di Baia.

1977 saw the launch of the Baia yacht Pascià, which was a revolutionary boat of her time, featuring a wide round stern, fibreglass structure and hull, as well as teak decking and interior. The year 1980 marked a turning point, with their boats being entirely made out of counter moulded fibreglass. The new M/Y B81 series was lower in the water and had a more attractive line. The success was huge, with 106 models produced in 10 years.  In 1983 another turning point was marked by the launch of the new motor yacht series B50. She was a fast yacht with great performance and elegant sleek lines, that became hugely popular on the American market.

In 1986 the Italian shipyard Baia High Performance Yachts started concentrating on the production of large-sized Open superyachts. This strategic decision was made to enter the increasing domestic demands and to penetrate new markets. Their first Open vessel was the B60 motor yacht. In 1992 their B80 superyacht was launched. The international market received the new series very well and to this day, its renewed technologically advanced version Open cruiser sails the seas at 50 knots. The same year the company joined the world of cabin cruisers with the production of their first 105' Baia super yacht.

By now the shipyard had two distinctive markets, with 55% of their production destined for the domestic market and 45% for export. In 1995 they launched their B Zero yacht series. Between 1988 and 2003 Baia Yachts widened its horizons and opened dealerships in different charter locations such as Miami, Los Angeles, Santo Domingo, Cote d'Azure, England, Greece, Spain, Turkey, Norway, Odessa and Dubai. 

Today the Italian shipyard showcases  great results for their country’s economy, considering that 80% of the end product is designed, conceived and produced in Italy.

Thanks to their speed, great performance, style and elegance Baia motor yachts are excellent as charter yachts  for those who seek adventure and like to cruise around quickly and in style. Their range Includes the 1998 launched Flash 48' series, the Azzurra 63 feet MY, the 2000 launched Aqva, furthermore the 2003 Atlantica 78', the 2005 Baia One 43', the 2007 Italia 70' yachts and their 2008 launched One Hundred super yacht.

Gaining additional practical experience, learning new things and exchanging ideas with each other - more than 35 service technicians from our dealers were able to do all of this during a week-long BAVARIA service workshop at our shipyard.

It is the Oscar of the yachting industry, the European Yacht of the Year Award. The BAVARIA YACHTS team is all the more proud that the BAVARIA C46 was able to beat six competitors in the "Family Cruiser" category

Last week, the last BAVARIA VISION 42 was completed in Giebelstadt. On Friday morning, part of the BAVARIA YACHTS team gathered to give her a fitting farewell. The sailing yacht celebrated its premiere at the boot Düsseldorf in 2012 and the almost 13 metre long yacht was built in the shipyard for just over 12 years.

At the beginning of last year, the BAVARIA SR41 won the "British Motorboat Award", the BAVARIA SR36 won the "Best of Boat Award" just a few months later and was nominated for the "European Powerboat of the Year". This year, the latest motorboat from Giebelstadt also remains true to this "award tradition".

BAVARIA YACHTS got off to a flying start at the Cannes Yachting Festival, where the German shipyard was represented with a total of eight motor and sailing yachts.
