A Year of Growth With Hill Robinson Group

By Jenna Mehdi

The coronavirus crisis has caused destabilisation in almost every area of our lives, but perhaps nowhere has this been more profound than that of travel. This week, it is heartening to hear news of strength amongst some of the world leading yacht management & brokerage firms, as testament to the unerring durability of the yachting industry in a time of crisis. We shine a spotlight onto global yacht management firm Hill Robinson, as the company builds its senior management team and its HRCrew division reports the first quarter of 2020 to be its busiest yet.

To say Hill Robinson possesses a global reach would be something of an understatement. With a worldwide presence spanning from Florida through to Monaco and even Australia,  Hill Robinson’s admirable portfolio of services and impressive superyacht fleet make this firm a truly all-inclusive solution to every charter requirement imaginable.

Hill Robinson has firmly established itself as a reliable and prestigious charter management group, boasting an expansive fleet which includes the likes of 85.3m Bold , a show-stopper at the Monaco Yacht Show last year , and Abeking & Rasmussen 78.5m Amaryllis. Now Hill Robinson Group has successfully turned its hand to both the charter and brokerage spheres, acquiring Monegasque brand Moravia Yachting in 2016 to provide a seamless operation across the board.

In line with ongoing expansion, Hill Robinson has naturally announced it is strengthening its management team by welcoming Tim Leese on board to the position of COO, while Kurt Fraser joins the group as Sales and Marketing Director.

Tim Leese brings with him a wealth of experience, spending years working for automotive companies Jaguar Land Rover and Rolls Royce Motors before moving over to the yachting industry. After establishing his success in yacht dealership in the Middle East and South East Asia, Tim Leese comments, '' Joining Hill Robinson as the COO is a great opportunity to use my combined experience in the luxury automobile industry… Hill Robinson is an exciting multifaceted business challenge for me going forward with fresh opportunities in all the vertical client sectors they have been so successful in as they grow .”

Joining Tim Leese as new recruit and heading up the Sales and Marketing for Hill Robinson Group will be Kurt Fraser. A familiar name to many in yachting, Kurt has spent the last five years as Marketing and Commercial director with leading yacht charter and sales brokerage businesses, bringing with him years of expertise to direct the strategic positioning of Moravia Yachting as an emerging boutique brokerage.

Kurt comments, " With the solid foundations built by the Partners and Directors of Hill Robinson, across practically all key areas in the superyacht client support arena, Hill Robinson and Moravia Yachting offer an exciting launch pad to reach out to our clients in new and refreshing ways. We want to focus on the way we make a difference when supporting our clients, especially in these changing and challenging times.”

Meanwhile, Hill Robinson Group has reported ongoing success across its breadth of services, as the HRCrew division saw its busiest ever quarter in the beginning of this year. Fully operational and continuing to place staff in positions ranging from 25m to 130m yachts - as well as some land-based  - HRCrew plays an important role in engaging young people across the world and helping the industry grow more accessible.

From top level management to Captains and crew, Hill Robinson Group has defied the challenges of the current climate with perseverance and skill. As Nick Hill, founding partner, comments, ' 'Even with the new challenges of the 'new-normal' world with the Covid-19 epidemic we are firmly following our strategy of recruiting the best people to drive our business objectives forward.”

Hill Robinson celebrates 20 years

Over the past two decades hill robinson has developed to offer a plethora of services for yacht owners and clients across the world….

In 2001, the yachting landscape looked significantly different than today. Sensing that this niche industry has lots of room for expansion, Nick Hill and Niall Robinson set out to combine their years of experience working on board and founded their eponymous yacht management company. The Hill Robinson senior team also includes Karl Hartmann – who joined in 2006 – and the company now operates 12 international offices and employs 200 staff members. When looking back over the company’s legacy, this is the achievement that resonates most with the founders. “We’re most proud of building the best team in the yachting industry and retaining an excellent reputation,” remarks Nick. The worldwide team demonstrates expertise for its clients every day, providing complete peace of mind for its clients on trips to even the furthest destinations.

Welcoming the significant growth in professionalism in the past two decades, Nick comments on the changing tides of the industry’s approach to clients in 2021. “The transparency of the business [has greatly changed], with vessels being tracked, and ownership complying with much stricter regulations.” A reason for this is the sheer size of the market today when compared to 20 years ago. “Since we started out, there has been a dramatic increase in size and volume of new builds from all leading shipyards and a huge rise in the number of crewmembers employed,” he continues.

The crowded yacht management market can be difficult to navigate, which is why throughout the years the Hill Robinson team has grown and diversified its specialist offerings to clients, with a portfolio that now includes new build, and technical services, crew placement, corporate advice, charter management, and financial packages. According to Nick, the manner in which the company has distinguished itself from similar companies in the industry is to commit to providing stable, durable services to its clients. “We set ourselves apart by consistently focusing on long-term relationships and excellent asset management – not just single-point transactions,” he remarks. To stay ahead of competitors, Hill Robinson has also explored parallel industries, now offering a range of aviation services for clients.

Looking ahead, Hill Robinson will continue to expand its expertise in the industry with its Elite Academy for crew training. This arm of the business will offer to develop the skills and talent of the company’s various fleet teams, offering skills-based courses online and in-person. “The atmosphere and energy [of the company] still feels like a start up!” remarks Niall. “Throughout our 20-year operation, we have continuously looked at how we grow, evolve and expand – that spirit’s in our DNA. Complacency gets you nowhere and we have always been conscious of staying ahead of the curve.”

Ultimately, the companies that thrive in the industry are the ones that pivot to the ever-changing needs of owners and charter clients. The Hill Robinson founders and each of its team members illustrate that hard work, professionalism and commitment to client satisfaction will ensure a long-lasting legacy.

CAREERS IN YACHTING

There are many training courses and qualifications available to yacht crew. Once you are on board, there are opportunities to develop and progress. A can-do attitude and willingness to learn are good starting places. However, you will need some specific qualifications, and there are training schools that can help determine what you need.

hill robinson yachting

Deckhands start with an STCW95 and an ENG1 (or equivalent seafarer medical). A Power Boat Level 2 tender driving licence (PBL2) is useful. The next step is to aim for an RYA Yacht Master Offshore. Continue taking qualifications as you move up the ladder. You can decide later whether to work towards yachting or commercial qualifications.

Available options

STCW95 ENG1 PBL2 RYA Yachtmaster

hill robinson yachting

Yacht Engineers

The basic yachting engineering qualification is the AEC. Both deck and engineering qualifications require specific amounts of documented sea service before you can sit written and practical examinations. Note sea miles in a logbook available from the PYA. Engineers with qualifications from other countries can apply to the MCA for a Certificate of Equivalent Competency (CEC).

hill robinson yachting

Yacht Chefs

As well as existing professional qualifications, chefs must have the Food & Hygiene Level 2 certificate. The Ships Cook Certification is needed for commercially operated vessels with 10 or more crew.

Food & Hygiene Cert L2 Ships Cook Certification

Interior crew

Interior crew need a Food & Hygiene level 2 certificate; previous hospitality experience is a bonus for these roles. Interior training courses under the G.U.E.S.T. will give you a grounding in service and housekeeping.

19th Edition of Global Conference on Catalysis, Chemical Engineering & Technology

Victor Mukhin

  • Scientific Program

Victor Mukhin, Speaker at Chemical Engineering Conferences

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

Cleats left behind after Jackie Robinson statue was stolen to be donated to Negro League Museum

The bronze Jackie Robinson cleats that were left behind when a statue of the first player to break Major League Baseball’s color barrier was stolen from a Kansas park are being donated to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

The bronze Jackie Robinson cleats that were left behind when a statue of the first player to break Major League Baseball’s color barrier was stolen from a Kansas park are being donated to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

Thieves cut the statue off at its ankles last month, leaving only the feet behind at McAdams Park in Wichita. About 600 children play there in a youth baseball league called League 42. It is named after Robinson’ s uniform number with the Brooklyn Dodgers, with whom he broke the major leagues’ color barrier in 1947.

Bob Lutz, executive director of the Little League nonprofit that commissioned the sculpture, said the museum in Kansas City, Missouri, was “enthusiastic” about incorporating the cleats into its display on Robinson.

The display also includes a damaged plaque honoring Robinson. The sign was erected in 2001 outside the birthplace of Robinson near Cairo, Georgia. Community members there discovered last year that someone had shot the plaque multiple times.

“It’s kind of sad in its own way, that we’re building this little shrine of Jackie Robinson stuff that has been defaced or damaged,” said Bob Kendrick, the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. “But it gives us an opportunity to speak to who he was, the characteristics and value of what he represented, even in the face of adversity. And that message really never goes out of style.”

Robinson played for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers, paving the way for generations of Black American ballplayers. He’s considered not only a sports legend but also a civil rights icon. Robinson died in 1972.

Fire crews found burned remnants of his statue five days after the theft while responding to a trash can fire at another park about 7 miles (11.27 kilometers) away. One man was charged this month in the theft. Police said there was no evidence it was a hate-motivated crime, but rather the intent was to sell the metal for scrap.

Donations poured in after the theft, totaling around $300,000, Lutz said. The amount includes a $100,000 gift from Major League Baseball.

Lutz, whose friend, the artist John Parsons, made the statue before his death, said the mold is still viable and anticipated that a replacement can be erected within a matter of months. He estimated it would cost around $45,000 to replace the statue itself. While there also will be security and lighting expenses, that leaves lots of extra money that can be used to enhance some of the league's programming and facilities, Lutz said.

“It’s just amazing how many people are interested in this story,” Lutz said.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

hill robinson yachting

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
