The course & Location

Achieve your RYA Yachtmaster in the warm and challenging tidal waters of Gibraltar, Spain and Portugal with mild winters, reliable winds and often clear blue skies in December.

From our base in the Ocean Village Resort Gibraltar you will sail as far north west as Lisbon, and as far east as Ibiza, and everything between. Your course is designed to be challenging, engaging and enjoyable.

Facilities & Equipment

Situated less than 75m from the yachts, the shore side facilities offer dedicated training rooms including radio,  Radar simulators, and 3 x full size marine diesel training engines.

In order to maintain standards we provide the facilities, and hold both the RYA and MCA maritime accreditations in house so we can deliver every element of your course without outsourcing.

Leisure and Commercial Options

There are numerous reasons to achieve your Yachtmaster Offshore so whatever your goals, we have a course for you.

For some the Yachtmaster qualification is purely for personal use and in this case the 'leisure' only version is all that is required.

However, if you would like to work as a professional yacht captan commercially in the yachting industry you will need the Professional version including the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency approved STCW Basic Safety Training package, and more. 

In all cases, whatever version you choose, as we are both UK RYA and UK MCA approved we can provide all the  training you will need in house.

p to 3 weeks extra free additional training is available at no extra cost should it be needed. Most of our Yachtmasters achieve the required level in 90 days, however if you need longer. the team here is there for you, and there is no extra charge for the additional weeks. Finding Work as a Yachtmaster Offshore

A commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence will enable you to work as the Captain of commercial vessels of up to 200 Gross Ton, and crew on any vessel of any size. 

Fees also include food and accommodation for the 90 days.

All the ASA Yachtmasters use the shore based facility daily when in Gibraltar during theory weeks and at the weekend, it's essential to have somewhere quiet and cool to study away from the yacht. 

The fleet of 5 JEANNEAU 389 Sailing yachts were brand new in 2017, are moored just 75 metres from the shore-based facility, and right in the very heart of the magnificent Ocean Village Resort in Gibraltar. This is a great place to relax during your down time.

RYA YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE PREPARATION WEEK

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore is an intensive 10 day course over 2 weeks to prepare an experienced sailor for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Practical exam, which will lead to an RYA / MCA Certificate of Competence, which is recognised by maritime authorities worldwide.

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore is the most popular qualification for professional sailors in the world. Prior to the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore preparation course you should complete the Yachtmaster shore-based course and sailed for a minimum of 2500 sea miles, including 5 passages over 60 miles and at least two of them as Skipper and two at night.

MINIMUM PRE-EXAM REQUIREMENTS:

Previous Sailing Experience: Minimum 50 days, 2500 sea miles including at least 5 passages over 60 miles. You need to have been acting Skipper for at least two of these passages and two of them must have been night passages. Half the sea time must have been sailing in tidal waters. If you are short on sea miles you may prefer to do the Coastal Skipper Course or the Fast track to Yachtmaster course.

Master (Code Vessels <200gt) OOW (Yachts <500gt)

Seafarers serving on UK Coded Vessels (24m-3000gt) with MCA qualifications have found some overseas administrations will not accept their qualifications.

This is usually due to there being no reference to STCW 95 on Yachtmaster Certificates. The Master 200gt is designed as a bridging qualification between the RYA Yachtmaster / Yachtmaster Ocean and MCA Deck Officer Structure. Holders of Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean certificates may apply to upgrade on a voluntary basis.

Candidates can upgrade the following qualifications: Yachtmaster Offshore to: STCW Master (Code vessels less than 200gt not more than 150 miles from a safe haven) / Officer of the Watch (Yacht less than 500gt). Yachtmaster Ocean to: STCW Master (Code vessels less than 200gt unlimited area) / Officer of the Watch (Yacht less than 500gt).

All RYA/MCA Commercially Endorsed Yacht Skippers must now complete the Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) Course unless MCA Master 200gt or above. Holders of MCA Officer of the Watch, Master 200 and Master 500 certificates (post 1995) are exempt from (PPR). They must send a copy of their MCA certificate with their commercial endorsement application form/renewal.

The on line course has to be completed prior to endorsement or every 5 years on Commercial revalidation. Our RYA Theory Course page has further information.

About Allabroad & Gibraltar

The allabroad story 1998 to now....

Allabroad Limited was established in 1998 with the purchase of a brand new Moody 46 and started as a yacht charter business setting out from the UK on a worldwide sailing adventure. In 1999 we stopped on route in Gibraltar and actually never left, that's how great a place Gibraltar is for sailing! In January 2000 we applied to become an RYA Training Centre and have been setting standards from our Gibraltar base ever since.

In 2002 we were one of the first to run a Fast Track Yachtmaster all-in-one course from beginner to professional and have been adding to and enhancing this course ever since; with Allabroad you are buying into our expertise and industry experience accumulated over many years.

In 2008 we applied to become a MCA Accredited  Training Provider to run STCW courses in order to expand our professional maritime training courses for our career minded clients, or indeed leisure clients that caught the sailing bug so bad they decided a lifestyle change was required.

We started as Allabroad Sailing School changing to  Allabroad Sailing Academy when we grew both our fleet and extensive shore-based facilities. Allabroad Maritime Academy is our professional side - delivering courses to not only the maritime industry, but shore based emergency services, customs, government and police.

We're now known as an international centre of training excellence attracting students from not only UK and Europe, but from as far away as the USA, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

We are known as Allabroad or ASA for short.

Our Training Standards 

Training at all levels on new and modern school yachts not only offers further challenges but equates to much better accommodation and systems on board.  For example our 2016 model Jeanneau 389 sailing yachts all have USB charging ports in all cabins along with a two pin European style electrical socket. Running new sailing yachts comes at a great expense to the company but great benefit to you the client, still our ethos continues to work up to a standard and not down to a price.  As a result Allabroad has become a favorite amongst the discerning trainee skippers of all levels as the Allabroad training is more conducive to the real world demands the skippers of a modern yacht faces.

The Sailing Area

Gibraltar is a great sailing area due to being tidal and having 300 days of sunshine each year thus making it a true all year round sailing destination. We are just as busy in October to February as we are in the spring and summer months. Whilst the RYA have just removed the tidal requirements for Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper in 2017 the clients that come to us are the ones that still want the real tidal experience but the comfort and warmth or the Med climate. Plus the convenience of the International Gibraltar airport connecting Gatwick, Luton. Heathrow, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester. We are British Pounds Sterling here in Gibraltar and thus with the Euro rate you get to enjoy Euro land without the expenditure. The Straits of Gibraltar have many challenges for the developing skipper with strong currents, tidal rips, traffic separation scheme and one of the most unique night pilotage exercises with the variety of natural maritime activities. We regularly see dolphins and sometimes whales and even basking sharks and to add to the wildlife randomness you can often take a camel ride on the Moroccan side when we decide to stay overnight in a different jurisdiction again.

Join us in Gibraltar for our 7-week RYA Yachtmaster Offshore motor course & exam. You will spend 6 weeks mile building covering 2,500 nautical miles, before completing a skills & drills preparation week prior to taking your exam.

Pre-course experience / requirements

There are no pre-course requirements for this course as it is designed for beginners looking to go from "zero to hero" and learn the skills needed to become an RYA Yachtmaster. This course is designed to teach you in the most effective and efficient methods possible with our dedicated professional RYA instructors.

What's included?

In short, everything is included.  Fuel, Marinas, Accommodation aboard, light meals at sea, Breakfast, Lunch, snacks, and drinks. Course notes & materials are also included in our RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Fast Track course.  *Exam fees are not included in our course fee.

Course Syllabus

Candidates will be trained and then tested to demonstrate knowledge & competence in the following; International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, Safety, Boat Handling, General Seamanship including maintenance, responsibilities of a Skipper, Navigation, Meteorology & Signals.

What to bring?

Sailors are exposed to the elements and must always be prepared for the unexpected. Due to limited storage on board, we always recommend you bring lightweight clothing to suit all possible weather scenarios.

Additional Course Information

Before a Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence can be awarded you will need to hold a VHF Certificate and First Aid Certificate. You can either obtain these before you arrive in Gibraltar or we can arrange for you to take these in Gibraltar during your course.
