Boat Review: Swan 54

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: October 11, 2018

Sparkman & Stephens. Ron Holland. Germán Frers. In the storied history of Nautor’s Swan , one of the world’s most established and respected brands of production cruising boats, with the exception of several race boats in the Club Swan line, the company has employed the services of precisely three naval architects, legends all. Since the 1980s, though, the principal designer has been Frers, and during that time, the company has perhaps become best known for its line of “maxi” yachts, ranging from a relatively modest 60-footer to the whopping Swan 132.

And I thought my first memorable Swan experience, decades ago, on the very cool S&S-designed 44, was one sweet ride.

With the launching last year of the new Swan 54, however, both the builder and the creator have returned to their roots (Frers’ first Swan, in 1981, was the 51). However, if you’re looking for an example of how designs have evolved over the past few decades, consider the initial, very different, appearances of the 51 and the 54.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in the deck layout. The 51 was a veritable winch farm (there were at least a dozen of them, scattered hither and yon from the mast to the wheel); the 54’s spanking clean decks are completely uncluttered (there are but four electric winches, gracing the cockpit coaming, and even the running rigging is stashed in conduits beneath the deck). As with many big early Swans, on the 51, there’s not one dedicated cockpit but two, one for the sail handlers (and the companionway) and the other for the driver. The 54 has but a single expansive one. And of course, the 54 has twin wheels, a ubiquitous feature on today’s contemporary cruisers, and an unimaginable one in the early 1980s.

Yet it’s in the ends of the new boat that we see the greatest changes and innovations, and they’re striking. Forward, the self-launching anchor is beyond nifty, and coupled with the gargantuan sail locker, that’s one interesting bow. Aft, the boarding platform created when the wide, electrically controlled transom is lowered is nothing less than a sweet private sun deck (take that, pinched sterns of yore!). Both of these features are superbly executed.

Actually, the same could be said of the entire vessel. Like every bulletproof yacht ever constructed in the rugged Finnish town of Pietarsaari, the 54 is built like a veritable brick outhouse. Closed-cell foam is employed throughout the cored, vinylester-sandwich layup: in the hull, the structural bulkheads and the teak deck. Watertight bulkheads separate the lazarette and forepeak from the central interior space. Our test boat was equipped with the fixed deep (8 feet 1 inch), standard lead keel and a single rudder, though a “variable draft” daggerboard version with twin rudders is also available for those seeking more range, in skinnier waters, from their prospective cruising grounds (it draws 4 feet 6 inches with the board down).

Related: Nautor’s ClubSwan 50

The oak interior is handsome and well finished. There are three sleeping cabins: the master stateroom all the way forward, with an expansive island berth; a guest cabin just forward of the beam, to port, which may offer the coziest sea berths on passage; and another cabin to port, aft of the companionway, which can be specified as a double or with two single berths. An aft utility cabin to starboard is an ideal space for a workbench, the generator and even a washing machine, though the room could also be set up as a crew cabin, as it was on our test boat. The central dining area is to port; to starboard lies the L-shaped galley, loads of counter space and a forward-facing navigation table. A pair of heads on opposite sides of the boat flanks the forward and aft sides of the central saloon, respectively. All in all, it’s a straightforward but very efficient use of space.

Back topside, there’s a rather ingenious dodger built right into the cockpit coaming, which is easily raised or stashed when needed (you’d want to lose it when club racing, and this would be a grand boat on which to do Caribbean events like the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and Antigua Sailing Week). The sloop rig features a double-spreader carbon Seldén spar and a split hydraulic backstay; a pair of pad eyes on the bow are set up for the tacks of asymmetric spinnakers. There’s no traveler for the double-ended mainsheet, led to a pair of winches just forward of the helmsman. All other sheets and reefing lines are led below deck to another set of cockpit winches and a suite of attendant control clutches. A handy couple will have no worries taming this steed.

Sadly, on the day we took the 54 for a spin on Chesapeake Bay, we did not have the breeze necessary to put the boat through its proper paces. With a wimpy 3 knots of early morning autumn winds, we managed a couple of gasping knots of boat speed both on and off the zephyrs. It was disappointing because we had no doubt the boat would get up and gallop in any sort of reasonable blow. Under power, we were a bit surprised that the 110 hp Yanmar (on a traditional straight-line shaft — no saildrive) didn’t pack a bit more punch, yielding under 9 knots when opened up. It was the only question mark in my notebook at day’s end.

In other words, I was pretty darn smitten with the Swan 54. It not only joins the legacy of a proud and prosperous enterprise, it more than holds its own.

Swan 54 new yacht test video – a return to Nautor’s bluewater roots

  • Toby Hodges
  • July 10, 2017

The new cruiser that is so conventional it’s almost radical. Toby Hodges reports

swan yacht 54

The Swan 54 is designed as a pure bluewater cruiser that is ideally suited for a couple. It uses the hull mould of the Swan 53 (a 2005 Frers design), but the rest of the boat is completely reconfigured to give a more contemporary look and feel. But is Nautor’s decision to re-use an old design a step backwards, or is it just sensible to recycle proven lines?

A four-cabin layout is available, but the three-cabin layout is standard. Yet as this boat is very much aimed at couples, there is also a two-cabin model, which includes a large office.

Owners can also specify a chart table that splits the saloon sofa, as well as a third heads and a crew cabin.

Our verdict

When we first saw images of this 54, it was a little underwhelming, looking slightly dated by today’s standards.

However, it is clear from the enduring popularity of the Metre and J Class yachts that many sailors still yearn for more classic lines. Perhaps Nautor’s Swan is going for retro appeal with its renewal of an old model, or perhaps this is simply a sweet hull that had no need of a redesign. The reasoning matters not.

The Swan 54 is a dependable boat for couples looking to live aboard or cruise long distance – and particularly those looking for an aft cockpit model to suit stern-to berthing and warm climates.

With its quality build and finish its value is sure to hold up well.

In a year that saw Swan launch an array of very modern yachts: three 115s, a 95, a radical new one-design, plus announce a 78-footer, news of a return to the type of serious bluewater cruising yacht that made this yard’s name is particularly welcome.

The New Swan 55 represents over 50 years of evolution since the first Swan 55 was designed by Sparkman and Stephens in 1970. This was a legendary model which paved the way to the Swan 57 launched in 1977, the Swan 53 designed by Maestro Germàn Frers and followed by Swan 56 in 1997 and Swan 53 in 2005.

The evolution of the 2021 Swan 55 is sure to write another page in the history of Nautor’s Swan, based on the pillars deeply rooted in Swan DNA: Elegance, Quality, Performance and Reliability.

By Germàn Frers

“This latest iteration of the Swan 55 model Line represents a new generation of hull design developed over the past couple of years with the assistance of tools available today to study the behavior of the canoe body in all sailing conditions.

These are hulls with a powerful back end that attain maximum sailing length and low resistance while heeled thus the lowest possible displacement / length ratio and they provide excellent balance through the range of heel angles in combination with the well proven twin rudder set up.

When designing the bow sections which are well rounded transversally and have a sharp entry angle, we have favored the sailing condition and comfortable ride when heeled.

The hull displacement is the result of a thorough study of weight and the position of the equipment onboard. These boats need to carry a fair amount of equipment for the comfort of the people living and enjoying life on board. However, the speed will be very good all around.

She will be a pleasant yacht to sail, both easy to handle and cruise in its standard version and race in its performance set-up version, which includes a square top mainsail and a bowsprit for the light weather and downwind sails.”

The deck is the most important area on a sailing yacht – the place for controlling the yacht at sea as well as relaxing at anchor or in harbour, for enjoying the fun of sailing in pleasant weather and also conquering thrilling heavy storms while remaining safe and sheltered.

Swans have always been designed taking the deck and its organization into great account. From the very first yacht in the late 60’s, every Swan has a deck optimized in every detail for efficient, safe and enjoyable sailing and living aboard in great comfort, be it under way, at anchor or in marinas. Today our yachts show a hallmark deck organization, with well separated areas for handling the boat while sailing and living comfortably in all possible situations, be it sunbathing, dining or swimming. Great care is also given to proper protection both from adverse weather and from sun with well-designed sprayhoods, biminis and awnings.

The new Swan 55 is perfectly in line with this ethos, adding in some new innovations that enhance livability still further in the cockpit and transom areas, like the “transformer” tables or the extra-long swimming platform, an exclusive new feature on a yacht of this size, which enhances the livability of this area, resulting in a proper beach area derived from superyachts. Shorthanded cruising is facilitated by five equally specified winches, all electric as standard, positioned to allow a single crew member to handle the boat alone. The hallmark design of the coamings protecting the benches results in an extra-wide cockpit area, where the twin “transformer” tables offer a variety of setups, from lunch to sunbathing to “pouffe” position. Ahead of the mast, a wide sunbathing area integrated into the coachroof offers the proper shape for the self-tacking track, designed for the staysail but suitable for the jib as well. More forward, a large, deep locker is dedicated to sail and voluminous gear storage.

In line with her sisters, the Swan 55 interiors represent a refined luxury, typical of Nautor’s renowned Finnish craftsmanship.

The interior has been designed having in mind maximum comfort for long periods, both under sail and at anchor.

The new Swan 55 offers an exclusive layout with three comfortable double cabins with two heads, complete with separate shower compartments (a third head is optional).

The saloon and galley are designed for maximum livability and social interaction but also to be  functional and practical while under sail. The organization of the spaces allows an additional utility cabin dedicated to storage or this can be converted into a crew cabin with an enclosed head and a sink.

The saloon has a C-shaped sofa with central table to port while the starboard area including  the chart table can be configured into three different layouts according to the owner’s needs.

This whole  general arrangement provides a very convivial and friendly feel to live aboard the yacht below decks.

The galley, following the latest layouts of Swan 48 and Swan 58, offers domestic-like amenities, including top-level appliances, comfort and generous storage places. Many options are offered for the cabin layout, in order to fulfil different owners’ needs and to allow proper personalization of the yacht.

The natural light coming in from the hull windows and plentiful overhead hatches gives great energy and luminosity inside the space.

By Misa Poggi

“A blue water yacht with an exclusive layout is born. Three cabins, two heads and a “stock” cabin, to be used according to the owner’s needs. A layout allowing great comfort for long periods of ocean navigation. The design matches with the materials. Those chosen for the Swan 55, have been selected to be aligned with life onboard and mirror a perfect home-lifestyle… practical, pleasant, comfortable and durable. Four essential elements that need to coexist at sea.

Particularly balanced colours and finishes to expand spaces and create an environment of super comfort. The moods have been designed to respond to the tastes of different types of customer, from the most classic to the most “extravagant”, but always maintaining the style and the elegant standard of a Swan. For the internal finishes of the bulkheads, the wainscot style is proposed among other options as an homage to the historical seafaring tradition… obviously respecting Swan safety and practicality.”

For style and finishing the new Swan 55 features three different moods: Swan Soul which embodies the typical Swan ambiance, Scandi Vision for a more northern atmosphere and Blue Genoa paying homage to the colours of the ocean and more traditional seafaring.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Moscow Metro and Swan Lake

A few days ago, I went with Elena and Becky on a trip around the Moscow metro, the second most heavily used metro system in the world. I didn’t know much about it before, but it’s an architectural marvel in and of itself, a gorgeous relic from Moscow’s Soviet past and Stalinist architecture in particular. We rode around the central brown line, a circle of 12 stations that Stalin oversaw the creation/renovation of in the 1930s and 40s. All are ornately decorated with different themes (sports, French palatial architecture, Lenin portraits, etc), in a way that was intended to remind the average rider of all the ways their government was giving back to them for their hard work. Apparently, they all have an emphasis on “verticality”, essentially meaning that either the ceilings are very lavish, or the art on the walls is dimensioned to draw the eye upwards, reminding metro-goers of the place of Stalin in their lives. Below are pictures of my favorite stations.

All of the stations are fairly deep underground, hence scarily steep escalators.

And finally, my favorite: a series of geometrical stained glass windows.

To top off our time in Moscow, last night we managed to get student rush tickets (for 100 roubles, or $3!) to closing night of Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theater. The seats were terrible (it’s hard to explain how bad, but we had to stand for most of the show) but the ballet was incredible. We found out about the existence of student rush tickets/the process to get them very randomly, and as I haven’t found the process documented anywhere else, here’s a quick description: if you go to the Bolshoi at any given day starting at 6 am, you can put your name (and your group’s names) on a list for tickets to the day’s performance (it hosts ballet and opera performances on alternating days). A queue starts forming outside the theater at 2 pm, roughly based on the order of your name on the list, and tickets are handed out at 5:30 pm. Although this rushing system applies to all students, the ticket attendees might give you a hard time by refusing any non-Russian IDs (this actually happened to me, and I was only able to go as Elena’s boyfriend Luke kindly gave his up his ticket for me).

Fun fact: the Bolshoi is featured on the 100 Rouble note, and the insignia in front of the theater on the bill displays a hammer and sickle. Although hammers and sickles are still common sights around the city, the Bolshoi happens to have since switched its insignia to the logo of the modern Russian Federation, the double-headed eagle. Credit to Becky for noticing.

Seating in the Bolshoi: the big box on the right is known as Stalin’s Box. Apparently he fancied himself a connoisseur.

Random photo of the day: a small bakery at which we bought a jam bun and a small bag of glazed wheat rolls. Tiny bakeries like this are all over the place (including in the metro stations, with fully functioning mini-ovens!), and make me feel perpetually hungry as I walk around.

Bedfordshire: Black bears at Woburn Safari Park ride on swan pedalos

The four young bears, Harvard, Maple, Colorado, and Aspen, enjoyed riding on the pedalos at Woburn Safari Park in Befordshire.

A lucky group of black bears were treated to a pedalo ride after a lake formed in their enclosure.

After heavy rain created a mini lake in their 13-acre reserve, keepers at Woburn Safari Park decided to float a swan pedalo on the water.

According to Tommy Babington, deputy head of the carnivore section at the park in Bedfordshire , the bears were "immediately intrigued" by their new neighbour and "wasted no time in investigating" it.

The pedalo is usually used elsewhere on the site but was awaiting new pedals, Mr Babington said.

"It was great fun for visitors to seeing them climb on board, and we love devising new ways to provide food, scent and habitat enrichment that stimulates their natural foraging behaviours," he said.

"Bears are naturally very curious animals, and keepers will encourage this with all kinds of enrichment through their habitat as this keeps their minds and bodies active.

"The swan boat enrichment may be a less conventional approach to stimulating their natural behaviours, but it certainly was a hit."
