Flag of Royal London Yacht Club

Former flags of the royal london yacht club's predecessors.

The Royal London Yacht Club was founded in London in 1838. Its first meeting place was the Coal Hole Tavern in Fountain Court on the Strand. Racing commenced on the [River] Thames. It obtained its Royal Warrant from the dowager Queen Adelaide in 1849. Now the Royal London Yacht Club has its House located in the centre of Cowes [Isle of Wight] waterfront, on a site that it has occupied since 1882. The club has a long history in British yachting. Its members have ranked among the most colourful personalities in the yachting scene. It was the first popular yacht club to bring the sport to Cowes . In its early days it fostered racing innovations and was instrumental in establishing a universal set of rules and system of measurement. Concern with the past is now balanced by an active and progressive membership with interests in all forms of yachting and a very active social calendar. Membership is limited to 500 members.

Arundel Yacht Club

The London based club was established by a group of gentlemen, who sailed on the River Thames. They kept their yachts on the foreshore by the Arundel Steps, which lead to the formation of the Arundel Yacht Club in 1838.

London Yacht Club 1845-1846

image by Klaus-Michael Schneider , 10 October 2019 In 1845, the members renamed the club as 'London Yacht Club'. At the same time, not being entitled to the ensign of HM Fleet, the Club adopted a White Ensign with blue cross, with the Union flag in the upper canton and a gold star in the canton below.

London Yacht Club 1846-1849

In 1846, the Lord Mayor gave permission to use the City Coat of Arms, which replaced the star. In 1849, HM Adelaide, the Queen Dowager, widow of King William IV, became the Patron of the London Yacht Club and thus the club was renamed again as 'Royal London Yacht Club'. At that time, RLYC was the seventeenth in seniority of yacht clubs. A warrant soon followed, dated 17 October 1849, to wear a Blue Ensign of HM Fleet with the City Arms in the fly topped by a royal crown. A Burgee was adopted which unlike many clubs, actually corresponded with the Ensign. The Club flourished on the Thames where its activities gained widespread support. However, in 1882, it was decided to move to Cowes on the Isle of Wight. A lease was taken on the two elegant Regency Houses on the Parade, which is still the Clubhouse today. Ensigns, Permits and Burgees

Quick Links:

Wearing The Ensign

General: A member flies the Club's burgee. The member's yacht wears the Club's ensign. The Club holds a warrant from the Ministry of Defence authorising its members to wear a Special or Privileged Ensign. This is currently the undefaced Blue Ensign. Some of the regulations regarding the wearing of the Privilege Ensign are law (the Merchant Shipping Act 1894, as amended) and some are Club bye-laws. The Club holds the warrant, and issues permits to members. Members themselves do not hold warrants. The Club makes no charge to Members for a permit. The Law: Permits are issued to individuals, not to the yacht. To be issued with a permit, the individual must be a Yachting Member of the Royal Thames Yacht Club and a British Citizen. The owner shall be a Full Yachting Member of the Club. In the case of joint-ownership at least one of the owners shall be a Full Yachting Member of the Club and the other joint owner(s) shall be a Member, or a member of a Yacht club in the United Kingdom or Channel Islands to which a Warrant has been issued. All owners must be British Citizens. If the Privileged Ensign is being worn one of the permitted individuals must be on board or in effective control, and the permit must be on board. The yacht must be registered as a British ship under either Part 1 or Part 3 (the Small Ships Register) of the British Register. Details of how to register, and a down-loadable application form, are available from the Registry of Shipping and Seamen, PO Box 420, Cardiff CF24 5XR and at www.mcga.gov.uk . The yacht must be privately owned or privately chartered. The yacht must be being used for private pleasure purposes only and no form of commercial activity may occur on board while the ensign is being worn. Images of the yacht wearing the Blue Ensign may not subsequently be used for commercial purposes. The yacht's name may not contain any commercial element, including that of a sponsoring company or product. The yacht must have marked on her transom either the Port of Registry or the name of a Yacht Club to which a Warrant from the Secretary of State has been issued. No more than two Yacht Club names may be carried on the transom. The yacht must have a gross tonnage of at least 2 GT or a length overall of at least 7 metres. If members break these laws, the MoD can act (and is known to have done so) to withdraw a Club's warrant. The Club Rules: In addition to the above, the Club's Yachting Bye-Laws require that the Club's burgee be flown at the masthead, never from the spreaders nor from rod rigging, while the Club's ensign is being worn. No exceptions are permitted. If the burgee cannot be flown from the masthead, the Privilege Ensign may not be worn (a standard British maritime ensign - the Red Ensign - should then be worn instead). If the yacht does not have a mast (e.g. a motor yacht) the burgee may be flown from a jackstaff forward. There is only one type of blue permit issued by the Club - where previously we issued an Owner's and a Charterer's permit separately we now only issue one permit for those members whose yachts are privately owned, and for those members whose yachts are owned by a company, from which the yacht is chartered. Who owns the company is irrelevant. The principal significant difference between permits issued for privately-owned and for chartered yachts is in the length of time for which the permits are issued. If the yacht is privately owned, the permit is valid for a period of five years (expiring 31 st March) or until either the yacht is sold or the person named on the permit ceases to be a member of the Club. For a member chartering a yacht, we will only issue a permit valid for the period of the charter, and this is shown on the permit. If the charter is indefinite (for example, from a company owned by the permit-holding member) then the permit is valid from the time of issue for a period of five years ending on 31 st March. To obtain a permit, simply fill out the online application form - click here

RTYC Transom Sticker Visual

Telephone +44 (0)1795 580261, email [email protected] . available on-line at www.tribunegraphics.com

Tribune Graphics can produce our badge and transom letters in a wide range of colours, sizes and even font styles. Club initials on the transom are required when wearing the Club's privileged (Blue) ensign and when using the Club's pontoons either in Cowes or in Hamble. (The reason for the latter is, in particular, to inform the relevant Harbour Masters, not to mention fellow Members, that the yacht on the pontoon is entitled to be there.)  On the Cowes pontoon the Club burgee must also be flown, from the masthead. There are no exceptions to this requirement. Click here to download a copy of the instructions for the transom sticker and the contact details for Tribune Graphics.

Flag etiquette

Flag etiquette is a combination of law (what you must do) and maritime tradition (expectations of behaviour within the sea faring community).

Being ill-informed of your obligations could lead you to cause insult at home or abroad by giving a signal you do not intend to give, or could lead you to a fine for breaking the law.

For many who go to sea, flag etiquette and flag rules are an essential part of the overall sailing process. Only with the right flag, correctly positioned, can you to be sure that you are giving the correct message and that any signal you are giving is clear.

For RYA members

The original RYA book (C4/01) has been reorganised into 3 parts for publication on the RYA website and is available to RYA members to download .

For all website users

A brief overview designed to demystify the basics of flag etiquette follows:

What to put where

The most senior position for a flag on a vessel is reserved for the Ensign - this is as close to the stern of the vessel as possible.  The Ensign shows the country of registry of the vessel and indicates its nationality. A UK flagged vessel must wear her ensign as required by the Merchant Shipping Act, which includes when entering or leaving a foreign port and on demand. It is recommended that the ensign is worn at all times in daylight, especially when near to or in sight of land or another vessel.  A UK registered vessel should wear the national maritime flag, the Red Ensign, unless entitled to wear a special Ensign . Wearing anything other than an authorised Ensign is a violation of British and International Law.

As the Ensign takes the senior position on a vessel, the order of precedence for positions for flying other flags is: 2) masthead, 3) starboard spreader, 4) port spreader. This assumes a simple plan of one halyard per spreader; other combinations including motor boats are discussed in the Members’ section.

Traditionally, the burgee is flown at the main masthead. A burgee must match a special Ensign if one is worn and it should always be higher than the Ensign. Flag etiquette states that only one burgee is flown at a time, but it is not uncommon nowadays to see yachts flying more than one burgee. Although this might cause offence to some, there is nothing legally wrong with this practice provided the rules governing the wearing of a special ensign are adhered to.

The starboard spreaders are used for signalling. This is where both a courtesy flag and the Q flag , as signals, should be flown. These days it is becoming increasingly common for yachts to fly a burgee from the starboard spreaders because of instrumentation sited at the main masthead. Again, legally there is nothing wrong with doing so but this practice presents a number of problems for those who wish to adhere to the traditions of flag etiquette.

More than one flag may be flown on a halyard except that flag etiquette states that no flag can be above the burgee on the same halyard and no flag can be worn above the courtesy flag. If you fly a burgee at the starboard spreaders and are sailing in the territorial waters of another country this presents something of a dilemma, particularly if you must fly a burgee to match a special Ensign. Unless the burgee is in its traditional position at the masthead, you risk flouting one or another element of flag etiquette. How you choose to resolve this is a matter of choice.

A word on courtesy flags, most countries use their national flag at sea and it is therefore not uncommon to see a foreign visitor flying a Union Jack as a courtesy flag when visiting UK waters. This is wrong; the correct flag is always a Red Ensign. There is no legal requirement to fly a courtesy flag; it is a courtesy that acknowledges that the vessel will respect the laws and sovereignty of that country. However, if one is not flown or it is tatty or faded, it may cause grave offence and in some countries can lead to a fine.

The port spreaders are used for house flags . A house flag is normally but not always a small rectangular version of a burgee. It may indicate membership of an association (e.g the RYA) or society or may be to indicate membership of another club should that club have a house flag.  More than one house flag may be flown on the port halyard, but with caution as too many might appear vulgar to some.

The Union Jack, Welsh Dragon, the Crosses of St Andrew, St George and St Patrick and the EU flag are primarily land flags and must not be flown at sea as an Ensign by cruising yachtsmen. At sea the cross of St George is the flag of an Admiral and it should therefore not be flown by anyone else, without special dispensation. A vessel flying the St Andrew’s Cross could be mistaken as saying "my vessel is stopped and making no way through the water" as this is the meaning of code flag M which has the same design and the St Patrick s Cross could be misinterpreted as code flag V "I require assistance".

Union Jack or Union flag?

There is often a lively debate about which term is correct. In fact both terms are acceptable having been given parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag".

Sizing your flags

The sizes and condition of flags are important. They should not be tatty and should not hang in the water, but should still be large enough to be seen.

The best advice is "what looks right" but a rough guide is:

The general guideline for the size of Ensign used to be an inch per foot of yacht, but on many modern yachts this is found to be a little on the small side for the vessel to look "well dressed". Roughly speaking a 3/4 yard Ensign should look right on a boat of 21-26 ft, 1 yard for 27- 34 ft, 1 1/4 yard for 35 - 42 ft, 1 1/2 yard for 43 - 50 ft and 1 3/4 yard for 51 - 60 ft, but some discretion may need to be applied.

A burgee of 15" in the fly (the horizontal measurement) should look appropriate on vessels up to 34ft. This increases to 18" for up to 42ft, 24" for up to 50ft and 30" up to 60 ft.

Courtesy Flag

Having an undersized, faded or tatty courtesy flag in many places is worse than having no courtesy flag. Again as a guide only, 12" in the fly should look appropriate for 21-26 ft, 15" for 27- 34 ft, 18" for 35 - 42 ft, 22" for 43 - 50 ft and 30" for 51 - 60 ft. Availability may however end up dictating the size of the flag.

House flags

A house flag of a similar size to those listed for the courtesy flag will generally be appropriate.

Special Ensigns

In addition to the national maritime flag, the Red Ensign, there is a White Ensign, a Blue Ensign and there are a number of Red Ensigns with a badge, Blue Ensigns with a badge and a light blue Ensign with a badge. These additional Ensigns are special or privileged Ensigns may only be worn with permission, which is granted ultimately by the King.

A warrant grants this permission and the Ensign must be worn in accordance with the warrant, which will in most cases require the corresponding burgee to be displayed. In most cases the warrant is granted to a Yacht Club, which in turns gives its members permission to wear the Ensign under the conditions of the warrant, by issuing the members with a permit.

The RYA has no power to police the wearing of ensigns or prohibited flags other than by spreading the word about flag etiquette and encouraging good practice.

The RYA flag etiquette book C1/04 has been re-written and is published online for the benefit of RYA Members.

The Royal London Yacht Club, formed in 1838, is one of the oldest and most prestigious yacht clubs in Britain.

The Club was started by a group of gentlemen who sailed on the River Thames and met regularly at the Coal Hole Tavern off the Strand and kept their yachts on the foreshore by the Arundel Steps and thus the Arundel Yacht Club came into being. In 1845 the Members voted to assume the title ‘London Yacht Club’. At the same time, not being entitled to the ensign of HM Fleet, the Club adopted a white ensign with blue cross, with the Union flag in the upper canton and   a gold star in the canton below and in 1846 the Lord Mayor gave permission to use the City Coat of Arms, which replaced the star.  In 1849, HM Adelaide, the Queen Dowager, widow of William IV, became   Patron   of the London Yacht Club and thus became ‘Royal’, and at that time, the seventeenth in seniority of yacht clubs.  A warrant soon followed, dated 17 October 1849, to wear a blue ensign of HM Fleet with the City Arms in the fly. A burgee was adopted which, unlike   many   clubs, actually   corresponded   with   the ensign.

The Club flourished on the Thames where its activities gained widespread but in 1882 it was decided to move to Cowes where a lease was taken on the two Regency houses on the Parade, which is still the Clubhouse today.

royal london yacht club ensign

Only the second yacht club to be formed in Cowes the Royal London was given the first Monday of Cowes Week as its race day and it still is to this day. Royal patronage came again when in 1893 the Duke of York became Admiral until 1911 when he ascended the throne as King George V. The present Admiral is HRH the Princess Anne who succeeded her Father the Duke of Edinburgh in 2012.

The influence of the Royal London on yachting and yacht racing has never waned from the earliest days when the Club fostered innovations and was instrumental in establishing a universal  set of rules and system of measurement.

The Club has always been associated with Metre Yachts and it is appropriate that the now annual Cowes Classics Week is probably the most successful event that the Royal London has run for many years.

The regatta has been growing year on year and is being referred to as ‘the Goodwood Revival of Yachting’ and ‘one of Europe’s most important classic yacht regattas’.

In 2016 the Club will be running World Championships for the Tempest and Etchells classes.

If you are a member of a Royal Yacht Club are you allowed to fly a blue ensign? <hr width=100% size=1>"Open Another Bottle"

BrendanS

Well-known member

If the club is entitled to one, and the club grant you a warrant (restrictions of minimum size of boat etc), then yes <hr width=100% size=1>There is no such thing as "fun for the whole family."

  • 18 Feb 2004

Re: And - at one stage anyway if not now the yacht had to be registered eg Part 1 and also a certain tonnage. If ownership is shared, all owners have to be Club members. Whenevr the warrant holder is not in command (on it or near ie in the pub or Club) then the blue cannot be flown, it must have a red. Also, no commercial advertising of any sort is allowed Anthony <hr width=100% size=1>

Royal Clubs can fly a "Defaced Ensign" if they have been granted a warrant and the member's boat meets the condition of that warrant (usually size and ownership) - it can be red or blue, depending on the club. <hr width=100% size=1>

Non defaced ensign is awarded by warrent for RNSA skippers. Defaced for Royal Yacht Clubs. I think! Nige <hr width=100% size=1>

Re: Fraid not necessarily so.... Certain Clubs (one of which I am a member you may not be surprised to know) fly undefaced blues. Other less "senior" clubs (Oh boy I suspect trouble now) fly defaced blus and others still, fly defaced reds but there are also exceptions e.g (I think I'm right in saying) the RAFYC flys a defaced blue OR a sky blue defaced - or that may be commissioned RAF officers only. must go and look it up again methinks <hr width=100% size=1>

Re: Fraid not necessarily so.... Ah! But you're still in a junior club, because the most senior of all, of course, fly the white ensign Lights blue touch paper, and...... <hr width=100% size=1>There is no such thing as "fun for the whole family."

Re: Fraid not necessarily so.... Wheres Byron when you need him?? <hr width=100% size=1>Been there, done that, got the oily T shirt

Re: Korrekt Absolutely Brendan The TWO most senior clubs are HM's Royal Navy (when in comission) and the RYS who, as you say, fly the white. I would imagine Her Majesty's personal standard doesn't count as an ensign esle..... How about "some of the more senior Clubs..." as there are quite a few less senior -har har har, tiddly pop etc, fumble with cravat as unable to tie it properly, "Two large gins my man"...... <hr width=100% size=1>

  • 19 Feb 2004

Re: Korrekt Thanks a lot for all the advice, i suppose i had better ask at the yacht club. <hr width=100% size=1>"Open Another Bottle"
