Rya theory & practical powerboat courses on the llyn peninsula north wales. based at pwllheli marina we offer a range of training courses for safe boat handling and navigation.

Based from our fully equipped centre at Pwllheli Marina, you can commence your training with the basic RYA Level 1 powerboat course progressing on through the RYA powerboat scheme, RYA Level 2 Powerboat, RYA Intermediate Powerboat, RYA Advanced Powerboat courses.

We also offer offshore courses in Marine VHF Radio/SRC, RYA First Aid, Day Skipper Theory and Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory.

Hydro Abersoch is a fully certified RYA Training Centre, run by Andrew and Danielle Johnson. It is based on Abersoch main beach on the beautiful Llyn peninsula in North Wales. Hydro Abersoch offers a wide range of activities to suit everyone from beginners to the more experienced, including sailing, powerboating, paddle boarding, kayaking, PWC courses and even our Little Pirates Club for younger family members. Beginner Courses  Our beginners courses are centered around the RYA Level 1 Start Sailing course & the RYA Level 2 Basic Skills course. These are our most popular scheduled courses. This course mixes and matches between the Laser Funboat, Pico and the Laser 2000.

RYA PWC Proficiency

This one day course will set you up for everything you need to know about jet ski driving. The course covers: Launching, handling and recovery skills, passage planning and decision making, high and low speed riding skills, essential safety information, collision avoidance and orientation at sea.

RYA Powerboat Courses

RYA Powerboat Level 1

For ages 8-12years. 

This one day course provided your child with basic powerboat skills. You'll feel more confident in letting them take the wheel. During this course they will complete both high and low speed manoeuvres.   

£220 per person, max of 3. (inc VAT)

RYA Powerboat Level 2 (ICC) The two day course covers all the to day basis. Launch and recovery, safety equipment, navigation, high speed boat handling, close quarters manouvering, man overboard and much more. Price - £420 per person. (Inc VAT) (Max 3 spaces - Ages 12+)

RYA Safety Boat This course improves boat handling techniques and the recovery and towing of dinghies, catamarans, windsurfers and disabled powerboats. A pre requisite for an RYA senior instructors course. Price - £325 per person. (Inc VAT)

(Must already have an RYA powerboat level 2 certificate - Ages 16+)

We don't run this course very often so please contact us for details. 

Dinghies for Rental

A safety boat will be on hand to help out however you are expected to be able to: 1. Sail to RYA Level 2 Standard2. Recover from a capsize. 3. Return to shore on time. ​

Funboat The laser funboat is possibly the most stable sailing dinghy ever made. This boat is perfect for a beginner to hire once they have had a small amount of tuition. Seats 2 adults or one adult and two children. All safety kit provided. Price - £65 one hour, £75 two hours. (Inc VAT) 

Pico The Laser Pico is a fun, durable, confidence-inspiring, rotomolded boat that can be sailed by everyone. It is one step up from the funboat so ideal for course completed entry-level sailors right up to the experienced racer wanting some time on the water. It is equipped with a removable jib. Seats 2 adults or 1 adult and 2 children. All safety kit provided. Price - £65 one hour, £75 two hours. (Inc VAT)

Laser 2000 The Laser2000 is designed with stability, safety and performance in mind. It is created for leisure and ease of use, but not at the expense of performance. Stability and a sturdy hull design make it easy to sail. The Laser 2000 comes with a single line reefable mainsail and furling jib for added sailing comfort in a breeze. It also has a kite for the more experienced sailor. Seats up to 4. All safety kit provided. Price - £75 one hour, £95 two hours. (Inc VAT)

Supervised Hire

One of the most simplest ways of getting onto the water on a sunny day. The stable and colourful kayaks are perfect way to see the beach from the water. Buoyancy aid provided and must be warn at all times. Single - £15 per hour Double - £30 per hour​  (Inc VAT)

Paddle Board (SUP)

The latest trend will keep your core strong and test your balance.  Whether you paddle for fitness or fun paddle boarding is great fun.

Little Pirates Kids Club

Especially for the  young ones, Little Pirates is a fun week full of different activities. During the week the kids will Sail, Kayak, paddle Board, jumbo paddle board and enjoy beach games.  We will aim to complete all activities but due to weather some activities may be repeated. They will be with a RYA instructor throughout the week who also holds a first aid qualification. 6:1 ratio as a maximum. ​Summer holidays. Monday - Friday  09:30-12:00 Ages 6-10 as a guide £290 per child. As you come into Abersoch Village you'll see a garage (W&G Williams) go up the lane between the garage and 'Two Islands' cafe. 

Keep going along the lane, drop down into the carpark. 

Go down the slipway onto the beach, we are on the shelf on the left hand side, the big grey cladded hut. Look out for our white RYA Flag.

You may wish to bring: 

Your own wetsuit/sailing kit.

Towel, suncream, bottle of water, spare change of clothes, sun glasses, hat. 

We take no responsibility for any

Lunch is not provided with any course.

With experience ranging from Windsurfing to time served with the RNLI, Principal Dave Williams and Chief Instructor Jono Garton have a wealth of experience that provides the skills to teach to the highest standard. Waterwise was borne from passion to deliver first class training to a broad spectrum of clients.

The facility at Madog Boat Yard is second to none. The classroom is central heated, with views across the estuary, and there are showers for PWC courses and a kitchen for breaktime. Outside in the yard is an 8-tonne static crane, slipway, private pontoons and workshop. The estuary acts as a lake and we can run courses in almost all conditions.

Waterwise have long standing relationships with Seadoo and Honda, when purchasing a new Honda Outboard over 40hp you are entitled to a Level 2 Powerboat Course paid for by Honda.

Jet Ski Courses

Fast, fun and easy to handle, go from beginner to a confident rider in just one day with Jet Ski Course North Wales !

Waterwise Jet Ski Courses are perfect if you want to have a go on holiday or buy your own machine. The Personal Watercraft course will teach you how to get the best from it. The course is designed for first time and experienced riders.

Waterwise Marine Training are the North West’s premier PWC training facility and are the only centre to have a fleet of their own PWC / Personal Watercraft’s / Jet Skis. The Fleet of Sea Doo Sparks are replaced annually as well.

The course is normally conducted on the craft with a ratio of 6 students and 3 craft to 1 instructor. The instructor will be in a RIB and you are not expected to be on a PWC with someone you don’t know. They also have an instructor or assistant instructor on a PWC.

Waterwise Marine have 10 years of experience in working with worlds UAVs companies. Whether your project is Search & Rescue Communications or Testing, they can be available to support your team.

Waterwise Marine also offers a variety of Safaris where you can enjoy spotting wildlife, learning about the history of the harbour and visiting a substantial amount of Cardigan Bay.

Harpists of all ages and levels are encouraged to register for the one-day harp course – a fantastic opportunity to receive one to one and group tuition by experienced teachers and to take part in a variety of workshops and performances.

Course Timetable

8.45am – 9.15am: Arrive and Register 9.30am – 12.30pm:  Classes (with short interval) 12.30pm – 1.15pm: Lunch 1.15pm – 2.15pm: Workshop / Classes 2.30pm – 3.30pm: Workshop / Classes 4:00pm: Rehearsals on the balconies 5:00-5:30pm: Harps Galore on the balconies of Galeri 7:30pm: Festival Concert

Parents / guardian will need to supervise their child(ren) from 5pm onwards. Please be aware that the timetable may be subject to change.

Course Tutor

Current Official Royal Harpist, Alis Huws is a freelance soloist, orchestral and chamber musician. Alongside her royal role, she regularly gives recitals across the UK and internationally, having toured to Japan, Europe, the US and Hong Kong.

As a soloist, Alis has performed at many high-profile engagements including the Welsh National Service of Prayer and Reflection for HM Queen Elizabeth II, The Royal Opening of the Senedd 2016 and 2021, The Welsh National Thanksgiving Service for VJ Day and the opening of the Welsh Government’s offices in Berlin. She has performed at a number of prestigious venues including Sony Hall (NYC), 10 Downing Street, Windsor Castle, St James’ Palace and St David’s Hall. In 2019 she appeared as a soloist with Britten Sinfonia, which was later broadcast on Classic FM. Additionally her work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and all major UK television channels.

Alis is passionate about outreach and bringing music into communities, giving regular interactive concerts for people living with dementia as well as working with children with additional needs. She recently embarked on a tour of 30 primary schools across rural Powys to celebrate 30 years of Live Music Now’s work in Wales.

Catrin Morris Jones

Catrin Morris Jones studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the Royal Academy of Music, London where she was awarded the Renata Scheffel-Stein Prize for Harp. In May 2014 she was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy. Originally from Bangor and after twenty-five years of living and working in London, she has now moved to live in Pwllheli.

Teaching children and adults to play the harp has been an important part of Catrin’s career and she has taught many students over the years in addition to teaching at various schools, including Ysgol Gymraeg Llundain (London Welsh School) where her children attended. She is now a tutor at William Mathias Music Center and for the Gwynedd and Anglesey Schools Music Service.

She has performed in numerous West End shows including Oliver!, Phantom of the Opera, The King and I, Notré Dame de Paris, The Producers, My Fair Lady, Napoleon, The Secret Garden and South Pacific (Royal National Theatre). Catrin has also performed with many prominent orchestras, including: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia,  Royal Philharmonic and Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestras, the Hallé Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Ensemble 10/10, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, the Royal Opera House Orchestra, Glyndebourne Touring Orchestra, English Touring Opera, Garsington Opera Orchestra, the Opera São Carlos in Lisbon, Portugal, London City Ballet, Moscow City Ballet and the Northern Ballet Company.

Tudur Eames

Course Tutor 

Originally from Pwllheli, Tudur began studying the harp whilst at secondary school with Gwennant Pyrs and then Elinor Bennett. He went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music, having harp lessons with David Watkins.

Tudur was a freelance musician for several years before settling into the world of education. He was a Head of Music at a London school before returning to Wales to teach at Ysgol Glan Clwyd in St Asaph. He is currently the Creative Director at the Gwynedd and Môn Schools Music Service.

As well as playing the harp, Tudur is a pianist and accompanist, a choral director, a vocal coach, a musical director, and a busy adjudicator. He is very much looking forward to being part of this year’s Harp Festival.

Mared Emlyn

A graduate of Bangor University, Mared completed a doctorate in performance on the harp and composition in 2014 with a scholarship funded by the European Union. In 2011, she won the Urdd National Eisteddfod’s Chief Composition medal for her work Perlau yn y Glaw for solo harp, which is now performed regularly at different harp competitions and festivals. Mared performs in concerts as a soloist, as part of ensembles and as a member of orchestras. She has received a number of composition commissions, including works for the Wales International Piano Festival, Colwyn Male Voice Choir, a work for the Bangor Music Festival premiered by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and a harp concerto for the Beaumaris Festival, performed by the Welsh Chamber Orchestra, with Mared herself as the soloist. In 2018, she collaborated with musician Gwenan Gibbard and poet Mererid Hopwood on a commission by the Wales International Harp Festival to celebrate the world renowned harpist Osian Ellis’ 90th birthday. Recently, Mared was commissioned by Opra Cymru to write an opera for children and families: Cyfrinach y Brenin, which toured Wales in September 2022.

Amanda Whiting

Amanda shall be holding a jazz workshop as part of the Festival Course. 

Welsh harpist Amanda Whiting has very quickly established herself as an essential part of the UK jazz scene. 

With her classical training, she has carved out her own unique sound following in the paths forged by Ashby and Coltrane.

Touring extensively with her own band as well as previously with Matthew Halsall, Chip Wickham, DJ Yoda and Rebecca Vasmant, she endlessly delivers immense beauty and depth from the stage. Her Cheltenham Jazz set 2023 was Cerys Matthews’ “ highlight of the festival”. Add to that three incredibly successful albums ( “highly recommended ” by Jamie Cullum, BBC Radio 2) for the legendary Jazzman record label and a nomination for Instrumentalist of The Year at the Jazz FM awards and you get a picture of a hugely important talent. 

In November 2023, Amanda released two albums; a  remix album of Lost in Abstraction  out on Albert’s Favourites and a collaboration with Don Leisure on her new label First Word Records. Her new solo album  “ The Liminality of Her” will be out in March 2024.

Amanda currently teaches Jazz harp at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. As a composer she has 23 pieces on Trinity Music College Exam syllabus,  as well as having  a prestigious Harp Column Studio.
