Eating in Papua New Guinea: The Best Port Moresby Restaurants

Photo of author

Papua New Guinea isn’t known as a foodie’s destination, but there’s a surprisingly diverse range of good food to be found around Port Moresby. Here are my picks for the best Port Moresby restaurants to try.

The Yacht Club is the place for an evening drink as the sun goes down. The sunset views here are incredible. The Yachtie, as the locals call it, has a Western menu with chicken parmas, steak, soups and salads on offer. Some nights of the week they have a buffet (including Noodle Night on Tuesdays where you can make your own noodle combinations) and a breakfast buffet on Sunday mornings. They’ve just released a new lunch menu that has a delicious fish with couscous dish.

Note that you have to be a member of the Yacht Club to gain access. Or just find a friend who is.

There are several eating options at Airways, Port Moresby’s ritziest hotel (the hotel has been voted the World Best Airport Hotel a couple of times). If you’re after fine dining, Bacchus is the place to go – but be warned, it’s not cheap. Start the evening with an aperitif in the Cigar Bar before heading over to dinner.

For something a little more casual, head to the poolside where you can eat at Deli KC’s (salads, sandwiches, milkshakes, coffee) or the Poolside Bar (the garlic prawns are delicious) or Vue Restaurant which has a buffet each morning and evening, as well as an a la carte menu. Views from Vue are stunning.

Daikoku has an extensive Japanese menu offering teppanyaki or a large range of sushi and sashimi dishes and donburi bowls. Tucked away above the SVS shopping centre in Harbour City, chefs will whip up your meal right at your table. The teppanyaki menu includes several courses, so come with an empty stomach. Note that smoking is allowed in this restaurant but if you can ignore that, it offers delicious Japanese meals – one of my favourites in Port Moresby.

Fusion is one of the newer restaurants in the city and always seems to be doing great business. It’s Asian with a fusion (get it? Well, actually I have no idea why the owners called it Fusion but this is my take on the name!) of flavours from China, Thailand and Vietnam. You must try the Szechuan Beef, which is absolutely delicious. Matt loves the lunchtime claypot chicken and rice. The dinner menu is more extensive than the lunch offerings, but whatever time of day you go, you won’t be disappointed. Takeaway available.

Where: Harbour City Contact: 7196 6666 or https://www.facebook.com/fusionbistropom

Dynasty has got to be the biggest restaurant in Port Moresby. Its chandeliers, gold décor and enormous size make it a favourite location for balls, dinners and parties of all kinds. The menu is pages and pages of all kinds of Asian meals covering seafood, chicken and meat as well as vegetarian options. Don’t miss yum cha on Sunday mornings (get there around 10 or 11am to ensure you get to try one of everything).

Like the Yacht Club, the Aviat Club serves up home-style meals such as stir-frys, toasted sandwiches, and salt and pepper prawns with chips. This is a great spot to sit at lunchtime and escape from work. They have lunch specials every day with usually three options available for around K30 each which is good value. Try the lobster which comes in a variety of options including mornay and sambal… delicious and not too badly priced at K60!

Where: Konedobu Contact: 321 4261 or http://www.aviat.com.pg/

Grand Papuan Brasserie

The Grand Papuan Hotel opened in late 2011 and it’s a very funky place. It’s bar serves up cocktails and a decent wine list, along with some pretty tasty tapas-style bar food. Grab a seat in one of the huge, black leather chairs and munch away on a few different options, or head to the Brasserie which has a nightly buffet. The a la carte menu is good and the steaks are delicious.

Where: Grand Papuan Hotel, Town Contact: 304 0000 or http://www.grandpapuahotel.com.pg/

Duffy is the creation of a couple of local lads who realised there were no clothes stores in Port Moresby. So they decided to set up one themselves. The boys design the clothes and stock all sorts of shirts, dresses, shoes and accessories. Very cool. Why is this store featured in a post about restaurants? Well, downstairs, their café serves homemade pies, cakes and sandwiches, and does a mean business selling coffee in a city where cafés are few and far between. They’ve just started Saturday brunch which I haven’t tried yet but it looks pretty damn delicious in the Instagram photos I’ve seen.

Where: Gordons Contact: https://www.facebook.com/duffypng

Angs Restaurant

Don’t come to Angs expecting good service (it doesn’t exist). Come here expecting good, cheap Asian meals. Angs is always packed so come here early or it’s quite likely they’ll have run out of roast pork by 12.30pm. Angs dishes up pork and rice dishes, laksa, Hainanese chicken, kuay teow and other noodles dishes, with the average price for a meal around 25 Kina.

Where: Gordons Contact: 323 0863

Asia Aromas

I hadn’t been to Asia Aromas in months until a few weeks ago. And what I had been missing out on! We scoffed down Thai dried chicken (a must-eat), lemongrass prawns and fried rice, all full of flavour (and MSG, I’m sure…). The menu is extensive and includes both Chinese and Thai dishes. This was the restaurant I spent many a night in after working late when I first moved to Port Moresby. You may see the odd cockroach here but if you can ignore that, the food is delicious, well-priced and quick.

Rapala is located in the Crowne Plaza Hotel and is another of Port Moresby’s fine dining options. There are excellent seafood options here with generous portion sizes. If you so desire, you can even order a few dishes, like Crepes Suzette, to be whipped up right at your table. The only downside is the atmosphere: it’s not always full and a bit of music would be a nice addition. Oh, and your credit card will take a little beating as well.

Where: Crowne Plaza Hotel Contact: 309 3000

Seoul House

Seoul House is (probably obviously) a Korean restaurant where you can either order dishes from the menu or cook your own food at your table. The slightly kitschy surroundings add a nice touch, and the food is full of flavour and very quick. We recently arrived there for lunch just before 2pm, not realising they were about to close. No problems – our meals were served quickly and with a smile.

Where: Four Mile Contact: 325 2231

Ten is another of Port Moresby’s Japanese restaurants. It opened last year, making it a relative newcomer to the city. It’s located in Vision City and has an extensive menu, including a teppanyaki grill. Personally, I think the food at Daikoku is better, but this restaurant serves up authentic Japanese meals at reasonable prices. Ten has delicious gyoza and a range of bento boxes.

Where: Vision City Contact: 302 8566

Palazzo is Lamana Hotel’s restaurant. The Indian chef cooks authentic, delicious Indian meals that are a favourite of many in POM, along with Mediterranean meals. Most recently I had a delicious seafood dish that was perfectly cooked. At lunchtime, you can choose from a variety of reasonably priced lunch options that include a small buffet of salads and soup. Quite conveniently, if you need to work off your meal you can also pop over to Gold Club, the hotel’s nightclub, for a boogie after dinner.

Where: Lamana Hotel Contact: 312 4410

Palazzo

Located near the Yacht Club, underneath the Edge apartment complex, The Edge café serves up sandwiches and tapas with ocean views. It’s a great spot for a Friday night drink as the sun is going down. While the food is pretty good, the service is slow so don’t come here if you need to get in and out quickly.

These are just a few of my recommended Port Moresby restaurants. POM residents, any other recommendations?

Duffy is the place, cozy n also the nice brunch.

Absolutely! Their brunch is awesome.

Do yourself a favour and avoid the food at Figaro Cafe at Vision City and especially the International Airport.

Cool website, Rebecca. Lamana lunch can’t be beaten for value and great staff. And, of course, the fabulous curries in the evening. Mmm. When we will see you over in Madang?

True, Lamana has great food. I think I need a part two of the restaurants post. Hope to get over to Madang in the next few months. Guess I should come visit the Country Club and check out your food? 🙂

Best Chinese is the Eden which is attached to the Country Club. Best burger can be had over at Madang Club (fishing club). Let us know when you are coming over, especially if you are a diver/fisher

Great, adding it to the list!

This is great, Rebecca, in keeping with all your blog posts which I really enjoy (got to get to Tufi next time). I’d like to add Ang’s in Boroko – terrific claypots, lakhsa and tom yam. Have you been there?

I love Angs! A friend chastised me for not including it on the list 🙂 Oops. My favourites there are the roast pork and any of the noodle dishes.

Good on you Beck! Well written and very insightful!

Thank you Matty! 🙂

I had the bacon & egg roll at Duffy’s Sat brunch on the Easter long weekend and it was awesome! Not sure if it’s just cos I hadnt had one in so long, but I swear it was better than most you get in Sydney! Fresh soft bread roll, eggs cooked perfectly, good quality bacon, yummy mayo and caramelised onions…nom nom nom

Oh YUM!!! Must get down there this Saturday then!

Celebrating 100 Years of Yachting and Sailing in Port Moresby

port moresby yacht club menu

By Jana Zoriry

The Royal Papua Yacht Club today celebrated 100 years of sailing and water sports in Port Moresby.

Established in what was then the Port Moresby Aquatic Club in 1921 by a young sailor Arthur P Travers, the Club had 30 members by the end of 1921. The first clubhouse was built in 1928; that was destroyed during the war in 1942 in an air raid.

The war also claimed a passenger vessel MV Macdhui; its mast was later salvage and is used as the Club’s flag pole. Also salvaged was the vessel’s anchor; it sits at the entrance to the clubhouse.

port moresby yacht club menu

From its humble beginnings, the club celebrates its centenary with over 2000 members, a 225 berth mariner, and an iconic clubhouse.

The Club might be the country’s premier yachting and sailing club … but people are at the heart of this club.

General Manager Aaron Batts says the club values everyone’s commitment and dedication in making the club what it is today.

Club’s Commodore Kilroy Genia paid tribute to foundation members, past Commodores, Executive Committees, Membership, and Management for their contribution to the Club.

To mark its centenary, the club this morning hosted the burial of the 100 th Anniversary Time Capsule and Unveiling of the Commemorative Plaque.

port moresby yacht club menu

Both events, was witnessed by Governor-General Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae.

The capsule contains 100 items from news articles, news clips, photographs, memorabilia, shirts, just to name a few. It was buried in a 5-feet hole in the hope that 100 years from now when the Club turns 200, it will be dugout.

port moresby yacht club menu

Due to COVID-19, other activities planned by the Club’s 100 Year Committee are deferred to a later date.

The Royal Papua Yacht Club was established in what was then the Port Moresby Aquatic Club on June 2 1921 by a young sailor Arthur P Travers.

As an enthusiast sailor, he realized that getting a Western style craft into Papua New Guinea from Australia will be expensive. So be bought a local outrigger canoe and started competitive sailing in PNG Waters.

By the end of 1921, the Port Moresby Aquatic Club had a membership of thirty with sixteen registered raising canoes inbetween them.

The first Clubhouse was built in 1928 but was destroyed during the War in 1942 in an air raid.

The war also claimed a passenger vessel MV Macdhui on June 17, 1942. The vessel’s mast was later salvaged and is used as the Club’s flag pole. Also salvaged was the vessel’s anchor; it sits at the entrance to the clubhouse.

The Club has over 2000 members, a 225 berth mariner and an iconic club house.

The facilities also include a restaurant, bar, cafe, gym, a storage facility for life aboard members, parking spaces (boats on trailers & vehicles), kids play area, and a small outdoor stage and seating area.

The Cellar Restaurant

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

I am a regular visitor of the Cellar and have never had a bad meal. In fact- I often take friends that are new to the area to the Cellar and they always rave also! I normally choose from the Indian menu, the food is... fresh and authentic. Today I went for Street Food Sunday and had the most fantastic Dosa and Samosa Chat. Their Club Sandwich and Caesar Salad also can not be rivaled in Port Moresby! Their service is excellent. Dan and his team not only do a great job looking after my friends and I, they remember me each time- even with my mask on! It is also family friendly with a nice selection of kid's meals that even come with ice cream (to my daughter's delight!). More

Thank you for your patronage! We appreciate the positive review and look forward to your next visit!

Very outstanding catering service. Delivery was on time for my dad's birthday party. The food was sooo delicious and heavenly tasty. Moreover, don't let me start with the birthday cake - the taste was just mind-blowing and was the star of all the dishes. Fortunately... it fits my dining table. Me and my family was so amazed and, we never stop talking about it. Highly recommended and Definitely my place to go. More

We eat here for lunches and on Sunday afternoons. The Tuesday evening Indian Buffet is amazing! All servings have great flavour and are always served cheerfully with little waiting. Dan and his wait staff are always attentive and pleasant. The dosa is wonderful--and don't miss... the Thali lunch specials! Great place to sit and visit with friends. Quaint atmosphere, secure car park, right on the main road. You have to try it! More

We usually get take outs from here but Dan sent us the buffet menu and it was so good and well worth the money. Dan looked after us real well and the desserts were really delicious. Dan always looks after us and gives us the... best service. Not only us but you could see he had a smile on his face for everyone even tho it was so busy he gave us all attention to detail. Nothing has changed here in the past 20 years, at least not interior wise. A cozy place off the beaten track and a long time favorite of mine. Excellent Indian food (much better than in other 'Indian' restaurants in town), and great service. Highly recommended.

Service seemed a bit off when we went (end of supper rush?) and our nan order didn't come out until we were nearly finished our meal. Food is very tasty though the spiciness needs to be turned up a notch. Servings are generous. There was... a buffet that looked good but we ordered a la carte. More

Thank you for your great review and suggestions. We do recommend, as every person’s taste preferences are different, to request the server to advise the chefs to make your order more spicy. We have also informed the chefs to make sure that the naan is... More
