Circumnavigate the World On Classic Sailing Yacht MERRYMAID
CLASSIC SAILING YACHT MERRYMAID
This beautiful 1904-built Camper and Nicholsons yacht , designed by Charles E Nicholson, is presented in concourse condition and represents an incredible opportunity to own a classic yacht of peerless bearing and strong sailing prowess.
Built in teak on oak frames by British yard Camper & Nicholsons to a design by Charles E Nicholson, she was delivered in 1904 as a gaff cutter. In spring of 2008, she completed an extensive refit that brought her back to her previous splendour and she then set sail for a worldwide circumnavigation. Accommodation is for six guests in three cabins consisting of a large master suite aft and twins to port and starboard, all with en-suite shower facilities. There is also accommodation for six crew in three cabins aboard this yacht for sale.
A charming and very cosy saloon has two sofas, a dining table on a rise-and-fall mechanism, and there is skylight allowing the daylight to pour in, while further features include a gas-fired fireplace and an entertainment centre including a large Samsung television and a DVD system.
Forward of the helm station is a cockpit with a foldable table and seating for up to six guests, while the wheel has a quite unique instrument that shows the angle of steering. Under power, a Perkins Sabre diesel engine delivers a maximum speed of 10 knots.
Most of the boat is still original and there are spare parts for everything, which is a major plus for a boat of this age.
published around the world
MERRYMAID is not just a stunning classic sailing yacht but a piece of history, a classic sailing yacht that has circumnavigated the world. When the current owner, who is an avid sailor, bought her he embarked on not just a refit but a re-think about how to improve and ensure safety for an around the world trip, without compromising her heritage, looks and or performance. She has a crash bulkhead, redundant systems and so much more, a far cry from the first Camper and Nicholson to have an engine, a 4HP engine! Circa 80% of her planking is original, and her interior is stunning and of era!
Following this very successful refit, she departed on a circumnavigation with her proud owner and went on to become the first gaff cutter to navigate the North West passage. She visited many fascinating and remote corners of the earth, details of which can be made available.
On returning to Europe, MERRYMAID once again went through a cosmetic overhaul and refresh, bringing her back to perfect condition and ready for another chapter in her long and eventful life.
The yacht’s outstanding condition is a reflection of the works undertaken by the current owner. Importantly, her systems and rigging were brought into the 21st century, making her a yacht capable of cruising in complete comfort and safety.
Now based in Palma, she is ready to impress her next owner.

MERRYMAID for sale
Merrymaid enjoys a significant place in yachting history. She was built as Yard No. 167 at Camper & Nicholsons Gosport in 1904 for Mr. T.A. Hardcastle, and amazed contemporary yachtsmen with her combination of speed and comfort. In 1911, after a successful period of racing, she was rerigged as a ketch, had an engine installed, and was then used principally for cruising. She was laid up in Norway for the latter part of the First World War, and was subsequently acquired by Mrs. Elizabeth Workman, who restored her original rig, and campaigned her in the Big Class, racing her against such illustrious yachts as Britannia and Lulworth . During this time, Mrs. Workman and Charles E. Nicholson continued to improve Merrymaid 's already impressive performance. Following Mrs. Workman's acquisition of Nyria , Merrymaid had two further owners, before she was bought by Sir Thomas Royden, chairman of Cunard, in 1929, who raced and cruised her until the outbreak of the Second World War. She was sold again in late 1943, her lead keel and rig were removed, and she was laid up for many years in Tollesbury, Essex. In 1963, having changed hands twice more, she was acquired by a family who have kept her as a second home. In 1994, Merrymaid was towed from her mooring of some fifty years to Heybridge Basin, also in Essex, where she was afloat, and awaiting restoration. Purchased in 2001, by the owner of the Moonbeam III , she was shipped to the south of France for a restauration project. Unfortunately, the owner passed away and Merrymaid was sold in 2005 at an auction. The present owner of Merrymaid underwent a complete rebuild by the renowned shipyard Southampton Yacht Service keeping her original elements and interior style. After the completion of the refit (2006-2008) she departed for a circumnavigation with her owner. Upon her return from a 3-year navigation, she had a complete cosmetic and technical upgrade at SYS. Located in Palma, she represents a unique opportunity to race in the classic regatta circuits or sail anywhere in unquestionable style.

Merrymaid is, without question, an extremely important yacht, designed by the world-famous Charles E Nicholson and built by Camper & Nicholson. At 116 years old, Merrymaid is one of the oldest Camper & Nicholson yachts still sailing today. Merrymaid has a long and fascinating history, she really has seen it all. Measuring 111ft (34.1M) with graceful lines, she is a pleasure to behold.
Built in 1904 at the Camper & Nicholson yard in Gosport, UK she was the subject of a long and very meticulous restoration starting in 2001 and finally being finished by her current owner in 2006. Constructed from teak planks over oak frames, she currently still has approximately 80% of her original planking in place today, along with most of her original interior. Her rebuild was done extremely sensitively, ensuring she remained original but bringing her up to date to make her cruising comfortable for all.
Her charming interior is configured to allow sleeping for six guests in three en-suite cabins; a large master suite is in the aft and twin cabins on both port and starboard. In the bow of the Merrymaid there are three cabins allowing accommodation for six members of crew.
Merrymaid offers elegance, style and history. She has been meticulously maintained and is offered with a large inventory ready for her new custodian to write the next chapter of her story.
Merrymaid is, without question, an extremely important yacht, being designed by the world-famous Charles E Nicholson and built by Camper & Nicholson. At 116 years old, Merrymaid is one of the oldest C&N yachts still sailing today.
Built in 1904, Merrymaid has had an eclectic life. Originally built for Thomas Hardcastle and raced in the Solent with fellow big boat class members such as White Heather, Creole, Metor and Lulworth. She was the star of the show winning the King’s Cup in the presence of King Edward VII that year. Mr Hardcastle then went on to sell Merrymaid in 1905. By 1908 he had purchased her back, keeping her for further 10 years. 1914 was the year that many of the large yachts were laid up for the First World War. Merrymaid was laid up in a Norweigian Fjord. After the war, in 1919, she was acquired by Elizabeth Workman.
Mrs Workman restored Merrymaid’s rigging back to its original design and campaigned the yacht in the big boat class against the likes of the Royal Yacht Britannia and Lulworth. During this time Elizabeth worked closely with Charles Nicholson to develop a Bermudian rig which helped her already impressive performance. It should be noted that Merymaid was one of the first British yachts to have been rigged this way.
In 1929 she enjoyed a relaxed few years while cruising with Sir Thomas Royden with the occasional race regatta. The Second World War broke out and, like her fellow yachts, she was laid up for a second time, this time in Tollesbury, Essex. Merrymaid contributed to the war effort in her own way, her lead keel was removed for the production of bullets.
It was 1945 that Merrymaid was towed around to the Solent and moved to a mud berth in the River Hamble alongside the famous J Class Yachts, Endeavour, Velsheda and Lulworth, but it wasn’t long before she was returned to Essex and put into a mud berth on the Blackwater River, Essex to become a houseboat for Roy Squire.
Merrymaid’s life as a houseboat was long, some 49 years. The Squire family used Merrymaid as a second home and managed to preserve her, fixing leaks and keeping her from sinking into the mud. It was at this time that many of the large sailing yachts of this era were lost but due to the dedication of the Squire family, Merrymaid survived.
In 1994 Merrymaid’s fortunes turned a corner. She left her mud berth for the first time in over 50 years and was taken to Heybridge Basin in Essex where she patiently waited to be restored. In 2001 Didler Waechter purchased Merrymaid for restoration but sadly he passed away soon after and the restoration came to a halt in 2003.
2004, Merrymaid was seen in St Tropez partly finished and was purchased by her current owner in 2005 and taken to Southampton Yacht Services. Her restoration was completed using 21st century technology but keeping her original lines and beauty, making her a yacht capable of cruising in style and comfort. It was in 2007 that Merrymaid left Southampton with an extremely delighted owner, who then started the next, and what can only be described as exciting, chapter of Merrymaid’s life. She set off on a 3 year tour of the world. She became the first gaff cutter to navigate the North West passage and visited some of the most remote and fascinating corners of the globe.
Upon her return, Merrymaid stopped in at Southampton Yacht Services and underwent a cosmetic overhaul to freshen her up ready for her tranquil life in the Mediterranean where she has been based for the past 10 years. Merrymaid is an extremely important part of the yachting world, with over a century of enthralling history. Her next custodian will not only be proud to own her but will enjoy preserving her history and making new memories.

Merrymaid - Yacht for Sale
Asking €3,950,000 EUR
- Builder Camper & Nicholson
- Length 34.1m (112ft)
- Year 1904 / 2008
- Gross Tons 87
Built by Camper and Nicholsons in 1904, this classic sailing superyacht has been flawlessly rebuilt and is presented in concourse condition.
The MERRYMAID yacht presents an incredible opportunity to acquire a classic luxury superyacht that still has original elements from her launch but has been modernised and is a proven world-cruiser.
Exterior Design & Engineering
Designed by Charles E. Nicholson, the MERRYMAID classic sailing yacht was thoroughly rebuilt in 2006 by renowned yard Southampton Yacht Services. They were able to save all of the original elements of her hull and interior and carry out some highly sympathetic reproduction work.
Her 31.4-metre hull is constructed from teak and oak frame. She cruises at a speed of 8.5 knots thanks to her combination of 21st-century systems and rigging and a 256hp Perkins engine.
After her refit, the MERRYMAID yacht owner took her on a three-year circumnavigation, and she became the first gaff cutter to navigate the North West passage. She’s successfully explored many fascinating and remote corners of the earth.
When she returned to Europe, MERRYMAID underwent another refit in 2010. This was a cosmetic overhaul and refresh that brought her back to perfect condition. She’s now based in Palma and, complete with spares for just about everything, she’s ready for her next adventure.
This luxury superyacht has a rich and well-documented history that includes a successful racing career, competing against the likes of VALDORA and CREOLE. MERRYMAID even won the King’s Cup in the presence of King Edward VII .
She found a new owner in 1919, and once her original rig was restored, she raced against yachts like BRITANNIA and LULWORTH. Another owner bought MERRYMAID in 1929 and raced her until the outbreak of the Second World War. She has great potential on the regatta circuits of today.
Interior Design
The interior of the MERRYMAID yacht sleeps six people in three en-suite cabins boasting mainly original cabinetry. There’s also space for six crew.
It’s a very classic interior that blends wood panelling and dark leather upholstery with touches of brass and golden highlights . The main salon is home to a pair of leather sofas that face each other across an antique coffee table, with a fireplace to the side. It leads down to another salon with a sofa and day bed blow a spacious skylight.
Key Features copy
- Full recent restoration by a world-class yard
- Proven world-girdling ability
- Ready to go again, with spares for just about everything
- Top rate pedigree for designer and builder
- Great potential on the regatta circuit

Beautiful 1904 Gaff Cutter, Merrymaid
An incredible opportunity to own a concourse condition classic yacht , of peerless bearing and strong sailing prowess..
Her hull is constructed of carvel-planked teak on oak frames, with a teak superstructure and decks. Her immaculate and mainly original cabinetry deliver a uniquely charming finish. The yacht’s outstanding condition is a reflection of the works undertaken by the current owner. Rescued from a life of houseboat obscurity, MERRYMAID underwent a complete and thorough rebuild by the renowned yard Southampton Yacht Services, (Velsheda, Thendara) in 2006. All of the original elements of her hull and interior were saved, with some highly sympathetic reproduction work also carried out. Importantly, her systems and rigging were brought into the 21st century, making her a yacht capable of cruising in complete comfort and safety. Following this very successful refit, she departed on a circumnavigation with her proud owner and went on to become the first gaff cutter to navigate the North West passage. She visited many fascinating and remote corners of the earth, details of which can be made available. On returning to Europe, MERRYMAID once again visited SYS in 2010 for a cosmetic overhaul and refresh, bringing her back to perfect condition and ready for another chapter in her long and eventful life.
Now based in Palma, she is fully equipped with spare parts and ready to impress her next owner.
AT A GLANCE
- Full recent restoration by a world-class yard
- Proven world-girdling ability
- Ready to go again, with spares for just about everything
- Top rate pedigree for designer and builder
- Great potential on the regatta circuit
Merrymaid also comes with the beautifully handbuilt Merrybaby:

Take a sneak peek at the biggest and most expensive boats at 2024's Palm Beach yacht show
- The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
- Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
- These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.
The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.
While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.
Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).
These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show, in size order.
Nero: 90.1 meters
Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool
Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.
She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.
For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.
Victorious: 85 meters
Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom
Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.
For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.
She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.
Casino Royale: 72 meters
Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi
Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).
Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.
Talisman C: 70.6 meters
Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library
Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.
Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.
Joy: 70 meters
Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor
Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.
There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.
Triumph: 65.4 meters
Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat
This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.
She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.
Seanna: 64.5 meters
Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool
The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.
Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.
There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.
Come Together: 60 meters
Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna
Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.
The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.
The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

This New Yacht Is Sailing to Gorgeous, Lesser-known Ports in the Caribbean Sea — and I Was on Board With 'Below Deck's' Chef Ben
E merald Cruises' new Emerald Sakara ship brings guests to smaller ports in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, with an onboard marina and the occasional Bravo-lebrity.
With a couple dozen guests looking on, chef Ben Robinson was showing how to slice and dice a fresh red snapper. “You kind of feel him — but you don’t fondle him,” said Robinson, the fan favorite from the Bravo reality show Below Deck, who’s always ready with a quip. As he pulled a perfect filet off the bone, he explained how to salt the fish and that there’s no more important relationship than the one you have with your fishmonger. “My advice is to always be friendly,” he noted. “I like to support my mom-and-pop [businesses]. If you become familiar with them, they’ll say, ‘Hey, I got this in this morning.’”
The cooking demo, which also featured a ceviche how-to and tips on knife sharpening, was one of many “Chef Ben” moments on my trip aboard Emerald Sakara . It’s the newest 100-passenger vessel from Emerald Cruises, which launched in the fall of 2023, a sibling vessel to the Emerald Azzurra .
During an eight-day voyage in March from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, the reality personality was definitely one of the star attractions. Robinson spent several evenings in the galley, creating special dishes such as a panko-crusted veal striploin stuffed with pesto.
He also hosted a well-attended Q&A about his life in the kitchen — and spent plenty of time connecting with fans, many of whom booked the trip specifically to chop it up with Below Deck alum.
“We definitely booked because of Ben,” said Shannon Welnel , a Montana-based travel advisor who had lots of praise for his cuisine — and the yacht-like atmosphere on board the 100-passenger ship. Other guests I spoke with admitted they hadn’t seen much Below Deck, but were intrigued by the chance to chill with a Bravo-lebrity.
Emerald Sakara
- With a max of just 100 passengers, Emerald Sakara feels at times like a private yacht, with no lines and no crowds, and outstanding service from a highly experienced crew.
- Minimalist rooms recall the stripped down aesthetic of Miami Beach or Mykonos, Greece, with pops of color from Missoni Home accents and a sleek-yet-functional bathroom with plenty of storage space.
- While this small ship has but one restaurant and one poolside cafe, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to meals, whether you’re hitting the breakfast or lunch buffet or choosing from the dinner menu.
- The onboard marina, which is open in favorable weather conditions, offers watersports and swimming off the stern of the ship.
- Easy to understand and mostly inclusive pricing covers meals, beverages at mealtime, many tours, and surprisingly speedy Wi-Fi.
The intimate-ship vibe was also one reason the chef wanted to hop aboard. “This definitely has more of a yacht vibe than any other [ship] I've been on,” Robinson told me one afternoon. “A hundred passengers is not a lot,” he said. “I've been on boats with 2,500 passengers, and you really do feel like you're anonymous. But here, the service is great, and you really are treated as an individual and someone important. And you kind of lose that on the big boats.”
While Robinson doesn’t have immediate plans to join another Emerald cruise, he told me that there were plenty of parallels between his life on megayachts and what the Sakara offers its guests. “It’s been incredible,” he said.
I had to agree. The Sakara certainly has much to offer, both in spite of its smaller size and because of it. While it’s available to book by the cabin, like any cruise ship, it still manages to feel at times like a private yacht, particularly when it sails to less-commonly visited ports such as Culebra, on Puerto Rico, or St. Bart’s. In the latter, we dropped anchor near Eric Schmidt’s yacht, Whisper , and had the whole day to explore the glitzy island and its capital, Gustavia. (After a drive around in the morning, I managed to catch the beautiful sunset from the lovely little Shell Beach, right in town.)
“The benefit of being on a small cruise ship like this one is that we can enter small ports and areas where others can’t,” said Robert Kuznin, the captain of Sakara , who previously worked with several cruise lines, including Paul Gauguin, Seabourn, and Virgin Voyages. “For example, when we dropped anchor in Esperanza Bay,” he explained about our stop at the island of Vieques, “there were only two meters under the keel — and that was the shallowest I’ve ever been!”
The ability to go places that larger ships can’t was also on display one morning on St. Kitts, one of the final stops of my trip. It was still early in the morning, but already four mega-ships were docked in Basseterre, the island’s capital. Instead of tying up next to them on the busy cruise pier, we dropped anchor just off the beach in South Friar’s Bay, a long sweep of sand in the island’s southern reaches. There were no crowds to contend with, no paperwork hassles, no touts offering dodgy cab rides. A five-minute tender ride to the beach was all it took to meet our local guide. Time from leaving the breakfast buffet to our first stop? About 25 minutes. Even the most efficient mega-ship would struggle to make that happen — and they can’t drop anchor right off the one of the best beaches on the island.
Other moments aboard Sakara felt like something out of Below Deck . One afternoon, I made my way to the yacht’s marina, a platform at the stern stocked with lounge chairs, refreshments, and water toys such as a floating trampoline and inflatable sea kayaks. I jumped off the stern into the Caribbean and then tried out the ship’s Seabob, a floating gadget that’s like a cross between a Jet Ski and an electric scooter.
As I continued my joy ride, I could see another vessel anchored just north of us. Turns out, it was David Geffen’s private yacht , Rising Sun . Of course, we were there first.
Here’s a closer look at all the amenities of the Emerald Sakara , which sails seasonally in coastal waters in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean Sea.
The Staterooms
Welcome to your starship: the stripped down, white-and-gray cabins on Sakara feel sci-fi chic, particularly when the accent lighting is switched on. They’re also, thankfully, spacious and super functional, with ample storage space (including a safe), a small minibar, a coffee station, and a clever headboard built-in that’s a great spot for your charging devices and water bottle. Most of the 50 rooms and suites have verandas; ocean-view staterooms are the exception. Bathrooms are just big enough, with plenty of storage, and are stocked with Espa products and a hair dryer. My cabin, 421, was a 300-square-foot balcony suite toward the aft of the ship on deck four: I never once heard noise from the surrounding cabins or in the hallway, though I did occasionally notice sounds and vibrations from the vessel, something that is common on even the largest of ships. A note on power plugs: my stateroom had U.S.-style outlets throughout as well as USB-A charging ports on either side of the bed, a nice touch.
Bars and Restaurants
Because Sakara is smaller than most cruise ships, it can’t compete on sheer volume of bars and restaurants. Still, the food on board is solid. La Cucina is the only true dining room, with both indoor and outdoor seating; it has somewhat limited hours compared to the round-the-clock dining options on bigger vessels. That being said, I certainly didn’t go hungry: a breakfast buffet is complemented by traditional à la minute options such as omelets and pancakes; lunch is also buffet style with a carving station. Dinner is more restaurant style, with options from an ever-changing daily menu plus always available classics such as Caesar salad, shrimp cocktail, grilled salmon, and spaghetti bolognese on offer. (Many dietary restrictions and preferences can be accommodated.)
On my voyage, chef Robinson put together several special plates, including what might’ve been the best dish of the week: a sesame-crusted seared yellowfin tuna with celeriac puree. The Below Deck star also put together a panko veal striploin roulade one night and, another evening, offered a citrus-cured hamachi with, in a touch of molecular gastronomy, “mango spheres.” Elsewhere on board, a poolside cafe, Aqua Café, has quick bites like burgers and flatbreads, as well as sweets and coffee pulled from a Cimbali espresso machine. The cocktails served in the Amici Lounge and the Sky Bar were consistently excellent, mixed by a talented team of pros who’ve previously worked on Seabourn ships and in some of Dubai’s top hotels. One weaker spot was the selection of wine on board: pours at mealtimes are included, but they didn’t rock my boat. A short list of “chairman’s wines,” available at extra cost, included a couple by-the-bottle finds such as 2013 vintage Cristal ($650) and some mid-tier Bordeaux and Burgundy options.
Where Emerald Sakara Sails
Though small, this ship isn’t an expedition yacht. Rather, it’s specifically designed for warm-weather coastal cruising, meaning it spends the lion’s share of its time in places such as the Caribbean and, in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer months, the Mediterranean. My trip aboard was spent entirely in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, where passages between ports were short and the seas were often calm. (We did occasionally encounter some swells of up to two meters, or 6.6 feet. I saw many guests wearing medicated patches to prevent motion sickness throughout the trip.) Sakara typically spends a season of several months in a given region, with a variety of cruise lengths offered, ranging from six to 24 days. In 2024, the ship will spend April through November in the Mediterranean. Sakara will return to the Caribbean at the end of the year, through April 2025.
Shore Excursions
Tours off the ship were a strong suit for Emerald, at least on my voyage. Most stops offered a variety of activities, ranging from a simple transfer to a nearby beach to a full-on, multi-hour tour. Usually, I found myself ashore with a very small group of folks — fewer than a dozen — and all the guides Emerald arranged were true pros. Passengers raved about a kayak paddle through the bioluminescent bay on Vieques, something I sadly didn’t try myself. I did, however, enjoy a short guided hike on the island of St. John, to the pristine beach along Salomon Bay, which was all but deserted. The organization of excursions felt flawless to me, thanks no doubt to the crew and shore excursion manager, Pilar Atencio. Worth a mention, too, were Atencio’s detailed briefings on what to expect each day. While these sorts of “port talks'' are common on ships of all sizes, they felt particularly useful on Sakara because of how intimate our groups were; many passengers made a point of attending the pre-dinner talks every night, for info on what to expect about our anchorage, historical background on each island, and detailed info about what each tour offering would entail.
Amenities and Entertainment
Call it small but mighty: Sakara has all the essentials, which is a bit of feat for a ship this size. A cozy spa has wellness and beauty treatments, as well as a small hairstyling and facial studio; morning yoga and stretching are available on deck. The fitness center, with a few cardio machines, a Peloton bike, and a variety of weights and other gear gets the job done. The smallish pool and a top-deck whirlpool were lovely — though I spent most of my time in the ocean: the Sakara ’s marina deck is a key feature, and it was open several afternoons during my trip. It’s like the greatest pool party you’ve ever been to, complete with piña coladas, sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and a trampoline, right off the stern of the ship. It is, truly, as much fun as it sounds like, though it is subject to the whims of weather and ocean currents. Also available in some destinations are e-bikes from Gocycle, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis; during my trip, several guests gave them a spin on the island of Vieques. Sakara also carries a ton of snorkeling gear and beach towels, which passengers can borrow whenever they like. In terms of performances, this isn’t the vessel for Broadway-style shows, but guitarist Jamie Ferguson and voyage director Nathalie Millet added plenty of live music to the trip.
Family-friendly Offerings
The youngest passengers I spoke with on my cruise were in their 20s — and they were traveling with their parents. Sakara is perhaps the perfect ship for families traveling with adult children, since it offers such a diverse array of activities to suit different tastes and activity levels, while visiting intriguing destinations. The ship is also intimate enough that everybody can gather easily for meals — or a swim off the stern — without fighting the crowds common on larger vessels. On the other hand, Sakara is probably not the best choice for families with younger children: there’s no kid-specific programming, and you’re likely to be the only ones aboard with little ones. “Emerald Cruises yachts are recommended for people aged 12 and up, and they must be accompanied by and share a cabin with an adult aged 18 or [older],” a spokesperson shared with T+L.
Accessibility
Sakara is probably best described as somewhat accessible: the ship has elevators to all decks and the crew was, on my trip, very accommodating to those with mobility challenges. There are handrails throughout, and bathrooms feature shower grab bars. That being said, several areas of the ship — the outdoor dining terrace, for example — require navigating at least one step even once you’ve reached the deck in question by elevator. “Due to the nature and size of the ships, wheelchairs and scooters are not allowed to be used on board,” a spokesperson told T+L. When the ship is at anchor, it’s only possible to go ashore by tender or Zodiac, both of which could be challenging for those with limited mobility. As Emerald’s FAQ explains: “Guests with limited mobility will require help from a companion, since the crew is limited.” Also of note: many announcements are made only by loudspeaker with no hearing-impaired alternative.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital
There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.
How to find the right boat?
There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.
Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.
This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.
Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such option offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).
If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.
Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.
How to buy tickets?
Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.
“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!” wrote (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.
Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.
Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.
Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.
Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as this offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.
This website (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other website sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.
Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.
“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.
There are two main boarding piers in the city center: Hotel Ukraine and Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.
Where to sit onboard?
Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.
The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.
Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.
There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In
FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.
Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.
Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.
Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila
Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.
Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales
The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.
Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas
Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.
Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro
Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.
Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan
Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.
Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo
Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.
Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu
The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.
There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.
