The 1500TRi exterior is a little different to many of the standard trimaran designs we've become accustomed to. Large spacious cockpit areas are located on either side of the cabin, with the helm stations positioned wide on the aft beam giving excellent visibility forward, as well as clear sight of sails and telltales. Lines run aft to the helms with winches and sail controls mounted close by for ease of operation. The large cockpit areas will be fantastic for swimming, sunbathing, storing dinghies & equipment plus just a great spot while underway.

A 19 metre mast can be rotating carbon or a standard alloy option, but with the performance aspect of this design carbon is recommended. she has fixed rudders on the floats, however this will not be an issue and she will still be able to beach easily. kick-up rudders are an option if desired and depending on your intended use for the boat. a single 30-40hp diesel is the recommended motor option., contact us for more info, exterior cad.

What Is a Trimaran?

A trimaran is a multi hulled sailboat with three individual hulls; the main hull ( vaka ) and a pair of outrigger hulls ( amas ). These smaller outrigger hulls are attached to the main hull using beams. 

While trimarans have a rich history dating back nearly four millennia, these types of sailboats have only gained popularity in the late 1900s and early 2000s. 

Trimarans are primarily used as personal boats for sailing enthusiasts or racing. 2024 Boat of the Year: Best Performance Trimaran

For the first time ever in the 29-year history of Boat of the Year , we’re introducing a new class to the proceedings: Performance Trimarans. To make things spicier, the two nominees not only shared the same length overall of 40 feet, but they also came in at the near-identical price point of around $800,000 for the base boat. 

Beyond those two parameters, however, the different approaches from these disparate brands were interesting and exciting. Cruising trimarans, though rare, are nothing new; the well-established Neel line of French-built trimarans has enjoyed plenty of success in previous BOTY contests. With that said, the judging panel was champing at the bit to put these fresh three-hull whizzes through their paces. And once under sail, we were definitely not disappointed. 

Winner: Dragonfly 40

Let’s cut right to the chase: The Dragonfly 40 had judge Tim Murphy swooning straight from hello: “This is an exquisite yacht in every detail. When you step aboard, the new-boat smell was not of styrene but of a wood shop. Built in Denmark by the Quorning family (designer and builder Jens Quorning took us on the test sail), it’s just a beautiful boat to look at from across the water. The wheel steering—no tiller here—was butter-smooth. Thanks to the boat’s extremely fine hulls, on our test sail we hardly felt any jerks or deceleration as we passed through several Severn River boat wakes. There were AGM batteries on this boat, but a lithium-battery system is an option. The kick-up centerboard and rudder are ingenious: Quorning as much as invited us to ground the boat on a shoal. From barber haulers to boom preventers, it’s full of great sailing details.”

Judge Mark Pillsbury was equally impressed: “As we finished up our all-too-brief sea trial aboard the Dragonfly 40, I scribbled ‘Top shelf!!!’ in my notebook. We had the benefit of sailing the boat with its thoroughly detail-oriented builder, who pointed to the seemingly endless features he’d employed to make this maybe the most memorable sailing boat of the year. At one point, I looked down at the GPS speed-over-ground number, which read 6 knots, then glanced at the true wind gauge: 5.2! Faster than the wind! The interior of the Dragonfly was elegant, with the furniture rendered in elm—not a wood we often see. But most impressive was the walk-in aft cabin instead of the crawl-in bunk often found in the narrow confines of a tri’s slender center hull.” 

Judge Herb McCormick was as astonished as his colleagues: “There isn’t a thing on the Dragonfly that Quorning hasn’t thought long and hard about, and then executed to a stellar degree. Take that centerboard arrangement, which is built into the central dining table and is integrated so well into the interior that it’s a functional piece of furniture as well as a foolproof cruising solution. What else can we say? It’s a magnificent freaking boat.”

Runner-up: Rapido Trimarans 40

The design brief for the Rapido 40 is straightforward: fast cruising and racing for a couple or crew; ocean-ready but able to sail and moor in shallow water. Nobody was more psyched to sail the boat than judge Herb McCormick, who was not disappointed. 

“I was first exposed to the brand at a multihull regatta in the Caribbean, where a larger Rapido 50 was in attendance,” he said. “I was on another boat, and we spent a lot of time looking at the Rapido’s transom. Then I stepped aboard the Rapido 40 for our trials and was handed the tiller extension; under the code zero, in about 15 seconds, we were making 14 knots. Whoa!”

Judge Mark Pillsbury said: “From stem to stern, the Rapido 40 came packed with features, including a double-taper carbon rotating mast, a Park Avenue-style boom for easy sail handling, daggerboards for upwind performance, and a very comfy cockpit. There’s an optional all-carbon version of the boat, including the drawers in the galley. The layout, with a comfortable V-berth and raised table in the salon—offering outstanding views of the great outdoors—is cruising-couple friendly.”

Judge Tim Murphy added: “The Rapido 40 is built in Vietnam by Paul Koch, the previous owner of Corsair Marine who started Rapido Trimarans in 2014. Rapido builds three models, all designed by the renowned team of Morrelli & Melvin. Our test boat had the standard infused construction, which is mostly E-glass with vinylester resin and a PVC core. There’s also carbon fiber near the bulkheads where the crossbeams meet. Carbon-fiber C-foils in the amas are intriguing and provide lift in two directions: up (to reduce sailing displacement but not fly) and to windward. Sailing the boat on the raised web seat with the tiller extension is gorgeous. It feels very sporty. Rapido’s latest claim to fame: The YouTube channel Sailing La Vagabonde has taken delivery of a Rapido 60, which will definitely raise the profile of the brand.”

LOCATION: Good Life is on a mooring in beautiful San Diego Harbor, San Diego, California.

DESIGN:  Good Life is an especially beautiful 36′ Norman Cross designed cruising trimaran . She is one of the few rare Cross trimarans that was built under the personal supervision of the designer during a time when he had a commercial lot in San Diego that he rented out space to for builders of his designs.

DESIGNERS FAVORITE: Of all the many boats Norman Cross designed, apparently this was one of his favorite designs. The reason is because it achieved his vision for a trimaran with the perfect balance of roomy accommodations for live-aboards as well as sparkling performance and safe cruising.

PERFORMANCE: Good Life isn’t a racing trimaran but she performs nicely thanks to her overall lightweight, efficient hull design, fully battened Ullman mainsail, symmetrical hulls and highly efficient keel. And what about comfort? Well, I love sailing on anything, but compared to sailing at 7 knots on a speedy monohull where you’ll be heeling at a 45 degree angle and dodging spray as you bash your way through the waves, you’ll find that Good Life sails dry and close to level as her narrow hulls slice effortlessly through the chop. And then there’s safety…   With those big wide decks surrounding you, she feels safe because she is safe.  You’ll really appreciate that security and comfort when you have young children, friends, family or pets aboard. Comfort under sail translates to feeling a lot more relaxed after a day of sailing. Also, a huge and rarely discussed advantage to a well-designed multihull vs a monohull is that that you’ll be cruising along silently under sail in a zephyr  instead of having to crank up the motor.

SAILS: Good Life has a fully battened Ullman mainsail with 3 reef points and a 135% Ullman jib on roller furling. Both sails are in excellent condition as they have had very little use since being built in 2017 and that will be obvious when you see them. (Two more light wind head sails are included as well as a removable bow sprit.) The mainsail when not in use is protected from the elements by a custom made Ullman stackpack. Unlike the usual cover for a mainsail that must be removed to raise the main, a stackpack has the zipper on the top and stays on the boom at all times. So, instead of your mainsail falling on the deck when you drop it, it’s life changing to see the main nestle itself inside the stackpack. Another huge advantage for a stackpack is safety because it makes reefing infinitely easier, and especially when sailing singlehanded.  This was my first boat with a stackpack and I can not emphasize enough how practical and efficient a stackpack is.

AUXILLIARY POWER: A 9.9 hp Yamaha High Thrust 4 cycle outboard motor with extra long shaft and electric start is mounted on a sled.  The sled protects the motor from being swamped and also enables the propellor to run as deep as possible for power and to avoid cavitation in rough seas. At only half throttle you can expect speeds of 5 to 6 knots.  The 9.9 hp Yamaha outboard is legendary for having a well deserved reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency. And this one starts instantly and quietly purrs like a 4 cycle should.  This outboard  also has very low hours, because again, Good Life sails nicely in very little wind.  (Please click here  to learn why an outboard on a sled can be a great option on a lightweight multihull.)

INTERIOR:   Good Life has a brand new interior with 6’++ headroom and includes new counter tops, new galley drawers,  some new cabinets,   new galley faucets, new foot pump, new varnish, new paint, new extremely durable top-of-the-line commercial grade carpet, LED lights, plus new never used sheets and bedspreads on both mattresses. Even if you have zero interest in cruising the seven seas, Good Life could very inexpensively be your comfortable floating apartment or weekend hideaway with the beautiful backdrop of downtown San Diego behind you.

NAV STATION:   Walking down the companionway steps to starboard is a large nav station with VHF/AIS radio, portable VHF radio, 110 volt AC shore power outlets, 12 volt DC outlets with USB ports, a barometer and huge counter space (new countertops) for charts or preparing food, etc. There is also a highly energy efficient Engel 12 volt fridge/freezer. 

GALLEY: To port is the galley with new countertop, deep double stainless steel sink with one new foot pump for the fresh water faucet and one electric pump for the salt water faucet. There is also a 110 volt AC shore power outlet and an ON/OFF switch for the inverter as well as tons of storage in the cabinets, shelves and drawers.

WING BERTHS: There are two huge double berth size spaces over both wings with large storage aft of each berth. A twin memory foam mattress is to port and a double mattress to starboard. Both mattresses are very comfortable and include brand new never used sheets and bedspreads/comforters.

DINETTE: To port is a spacious L shaped dinette  (with new epoxy surface) and storage below.

HEAD: Entering the head there’s an opening hatch above, stainless steel sink with electric pump to a fresh water faucet with storage above and below and a simple compost toilet.

V-BERTH: There’s a very large and spacious V berth forward that can easily accommodate two adults with storage below. At the foot of the V berth is a large bin for the anchor chain.

ENERGY: Aft of the companion way steps and the shelving behind those steps (under the cockpit), there’s a large bin that holds four 12 volt DC house batteries. These batteries are charged by two 150 watt solar panels with MPPT charge controller. In the compartment aft of the cockpit there is one 12 volt DC battery for starting the outboard motor.

ELECTRONICS: Auto helm, Garmin chart plotter, Standard Horizon VHF radio with AIS, West Marine portable VHF radio.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Where to Buy a Home in Moscow in 2024

The growth in suburban house prices in 2021 can be as high as 15%. This prognosis was voiced by the participants of Moscow’s real estate market. Housing near Moscow has already gone up in value by 7%, and before the end of the year, this number is quite likely to rise by another 2–3%. The pandemic has changed the trends on the suburban real estate market – the current demand for detached houses is noticeably higher than before the global outbreak of Covid-19, and this naturally influences the cost of residential homes, say the experts. They also note that traditionally, the fall-winter period has always been considered a time of low demand for houses for sale in Russia; however, the opposite is now the case.

Here are the Moscow real estate categories to consider when buying a house in Russia:

• By direction and location (Rublyovka, Novaya Riga, Barvikha);
• By classification ( luxury , business class, economy);
• By development format (townhouses, detached private homes).

When purchasing homes in Moscow, Russia, a good rule of thumb is to select houses within an 18.6-mile (30 km) radius from the center of Moscow. This ensures you will get a well-developed infrastructure, and that the chosen location will be replete with hospitals and schools.

We recommend considering the West, South and North directions just out of Moscow. You may notice that country houses are noticeably cheaper on the capital’s Eastern side. However, this is due to poor environmental conditions – the result of the presence of a number of industrial facilities in the entire East area.

Best Cottage Communities in Moscow

Muscovites with high incomes live in closed elite cottage communities that have their own full infrastructure. Such cottage communities are usually designed by Europe’s best architects, especially contracted for the job. These locations have everything: private English schools, restaurants, shops, pools and gyms, beauty salons and equestrian sports clubs.

The most expensive houses up for sale are located in the Barvikha Hills area (Rublevka direction). This elite location near Moscow even has its own famous brand boutiques: Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Bentley, Ferrari and Harley-Davidson. The least expensive house here costs 1.5 million US dollars and has a floor area of 656 sqft (200 m²). This gated community is just 10-20 minutes by car away from Moscow itself.

We encourage you to consider some of the following elite locations as you decide where to purchase your ideal property: Etude Family Club, La-Mansh, Western Residence, Yusupovo Life Park, Odintsovo, Novaya Riga and Pirogovo. There you will find everything one requires for a comfortable life, at the price of 300 to 500 thousand US dollars for a residential home.
