Catamaran Fishing Boats

What are catamaran fishing boats? Learn about the different types of catamarans and find out if a multi-hull fishing catamaran is the right type of boat for the type of fishing you do and places you fish.

If you are a new boater, these multi-hull fishing boats may look a bit strange to you at first. However, you shouldn't let the appearance of a fishing catamaran deter you. This is particularly true if you are a die-hard angler who likes the challenge of fishing in tough conditions. Catamaran fishing boats will generally offer a smoother, more stable ride to the fact that the twin hulls create less resistance when running through the water.

You may be familiar with the term catamaran as it pertains to sailboats, but the sport fishing boats that have been built for offshore use are power catamarans. As you begin to compare power catamaran boat models, you will notice that the best catamaran fishing boat manufacturers design vessels with features such as fish boxes, live wells, and rod holders.

Offshore Fishing Catamarans

Since power catamaran fishing boats tend to handle rough offshore waters better than traditional monohull fishing boats, these types of recreational boats can be a good choice for saltwater anglers who like to troll for species like king mackerel or wahoo. Although, fishing catamarans are not limited to saltwater fishing environments alone. They are also worth a look if you plan to fish large freshwater systems, such as the Great Lakes. Some offshore fishing catamarans even have roomy cabins below deck for overnight trips.

Offshore Fishing Catamarans Details

  • Average Length: 20 to 40 ft
  • Center console or dual console
  • Propulsion Type: Twin outboard engines
  • Capacity: 8 to 10
  • Trailerable: Yes
  • Hull Type: multi-hull design

Small Fishing Catamaran Boats

Small catamaran fishing boats provide a good entry-level option for new boaters. These boats not only offer better stability and buoyancy than most small flat-bottom or round-bottom boats, but they also have a shallow draft so that they can easily be pulled up onto a shore or beach. They are lightweight, simple to transport, and can be paddle-powered or powered with a small outboard motor.

Small Fishing Catamaran Boat Details

  • Average Length: 8 and 14 feet
  • Propulsion Type: Outboard engine, paddle
  • Capacity: 1 to 3

The Ins And Outs Of Fly Fishing

It’s possible to spend over a thousand dollars just on instructional materials about fishing. Instead of going to all that trouble, why not just spend more time fishing? The following article can help you understand some of the ins and outs of how you can become a better fisher and make some great catches.

When bottom fishing using shad, snip the tail prior to putting it on the hook. That way, your bait will not spin around the line as it drops downward, and tangles can be avoided. To sweeten the deal, the scent of the severed tail is particularly appealing to fish.

If you fish at night, consider using a lighted bobber. Lighted bobbers are bobbers that have a light inside to help fisherman tell when they have a bite. The bobber will move up and down, alerting you to the catch.

When fishing on a boat, do your best to keep your floor surface as dry as you can. It could be dangerous if you should slip or trip, especially with sharp hooks and other equipment around. The easiest way to dry the boat’s deck is by using a towel.

Using sinkers is advised while fishing during the winter time. Sinkers give the line more weight which allows it to get deeper into the warm water where most fish reside during the winter. The number and size of sinkers used depends on your line and upon the depth of the water in which you are fishing.

Fly Fishing

You should give fly fishing a try! This popular style of fishing is exciting and fun, but is unique among other approaches. You should get the proper equipment if you are going to try fly fishing, including fly fishing rods, lures and different gear since you have to stand in water.

It is a good idea when you go fishing to bring along a scale. This helps you to determine which catches are worth keeping, as well as to record your own personal bests.

Fishing is a sport with a clear goal, which is to catch fish. So apply all that you’ve learned from this article in order to become successful when it comes to fishing. Next time you fish, you’ll come back a success!

Best Catamaran Fishing Boat Brands

20th oct 2023 by lenny rudow.

Rightboat logo

Choosing the best catamaran fishing boats is no easy task, because in this day and age, you have plenty to choose from. This wasn’t always the case, but in recent years more and more power catamaran fishing boats have been hitting the market. The reasons are simple: Whether you’re looking at an offshore fishing catamaran, inshore catamaran fishing boats, or small catamaran fishing boats, foot-for-foot they tend to run smoother and more efficiently than their monohull brethren. While all the types of fishing boats are different and each has its own advantages and drawbacks, as a general rule, if you want to get to the fish fast in rough seas, nothing is better than a powercat for the job.

It’s tough to try to sort through various builders and nail down the best fishing boat brands , and the increase in the number of catamaran fishing boat manufacturers means choosing the top picks in this genre is as tough as any other. So, which brands are best? Here are our top picks in some of the most important categories and why we think they make the grade.

Best Catamaran Center Console Boat Brands

This will be a very short section, because virtually all of the catamaran sport fishing boats being built today are center consoles. Yes, some manufacturers offer pilothouse models or cuddy cabins, but those that don’t offer a lineup consisting mostly of center consoles are few and far between. So, keep on reading—the manufacturers we call out as tops for the more specific categories below all fall into the category of best catamaran center console boat brands, as well.

Best Offshore Fishing Catamaran Brands

Offshore boats need to meet some prerequisites: they have to be large and competent enough to run dozens of miles from shore, have the fuel capacity for cruising hours on end, and of course they need all the fishing accouterments to handle big game pelagics like tunas and billfish.

In many ways, Freeman is partially responsible for the current wave of cat popularity, because their 34- to 47-foot fleet was quickly adopted by a number of offshore fishing guides after they splashed their first model in 2007. Their boats are known for hat-stripping performance, often cruising comfortably at 50 mph or more, even in a head sea, with top-end speeds sometimes exceeding 70 mph. Tremendous fuel capacity and utterly massive fishboxes are some other traits the Freemans are famous for.

Freeman 47 offshore catamaran fishing boat

Invincible Boats offers a lineup including both monohulls and power catamarans , with center console cats ranging from 33 to 46 feet plus a 46-foot pilothouse model. These boats post spectacular speeds with cruising in the 50 mph range and often they can break 70 mph at top-end, thanks to semi-asymmetrical hulls with near-vertical inside walls. Invincible is also known for its advanced and customizable livewell systems. On the 46, for example, the boat can be rigged with up to four livewells up to 70 gallons each, fed by a sea chest system with as many as six pumps.

Invincible 46 offshore catamaran fishing boat

When judged by the number of hulls built, World Cat is one of the biggest powercat manufacturers in existence, and the company has a lineup that starts small but includes five models from 26 to 40 feet that are up to the task of offshore fishing. They have all the basic fishing features, plenty of range, and comparatively good performance, but what they’re known for when matched up against the competition is a healthy dose of family-friendly features. Unlike some angling-dedicated offshore fishing catamaran models, the World Cats feature lots of comfy seating, roomy head console compartments, freshwater showers, stereo systems, and similar touches that can take the edge off a long day of fishing.

Best Inshore Fishing Catamaran Boat Brands

Inshore anglers can be just as demanding as the offshore crowd, and when the weather is right many of them will head into the open ocean as well. So, the main defining factor separating offshore fishing catamaran boats from inshore catamaran fishing boats is simply size. And often, the line between the two gets blurred. As a result, you’ll see some newcomers here, but some of the best catamaran fishing boat brands we’ve already talked about could easily pull a repeat performance.

Caymas is a newcomer to the catamaran world, having built only monohulls up to the 2023 model year. Their new 34, however, is an impressive boat which has offshore abilities and will also make an excellent inshore fishing machine. It rides on a set of twin-stepped hulls with 18/22-degree deadrise surfaces at the transom and 50/55-degree entries at the bow, features a Hooker sea chest livewell system with 70 gallons standard and an additional 50 gallons optional, and plenty of high-end perks like lighted stowage compartments, a JL Marine audio system, and USB ports at the helm.

Tideline is a small, semi-custom builder in North Carolina, and their boats can be difficult to find on the market, but we need to mention them here because they build a 24-footer that’s well known as one of the finest inshore hybrid fishing cats around. With twin 200-hp outboards, it boasts 50-plus-mph performance, has an utterly massive forward casting deck for slinging lures to gamefish like reds and specks, and hull draft is a mere 14 inches so it can sneak into the shallows where few anglers tread.

Twin Vee does make some large models intended for offshore use but their 24- to 28-foot center console models are perfect for inshore angling. Better yet for many family fishermen who want a multipurpose platform, they also offer a pair of dual console 24-foot models. Twin Vees have a “compression tunnel” that packs air between the two hulls and compresses it as the boat moves forward, creating a cushion of sorts that makes for an unusually soft ride in choppy seas.

World Cat is back as we discuss the inshore scene, thanks to models like their 235CC and 260 and 280CC-X. The 235CC is designed like a bay boat, with large fore and aft casting decks, while the 260CC-X features a very unusual drop-down transom design, with the livewell and fishbox shifted into widened aft gunwales. Like other World Cats, these boats have plenty of comfort features to go along with the angling perks.

Best Small Catamaran Fishing Boat Brands

“Small” is a relative term, and while 20- to 24-footers may seem like small catamaran fishing boats to some folks, they seem mighty big to others. However, the distinction is more or less moot because in the current marketplace, no major production builders drop down below 22 feet, seven inches of LOA (the World Cat 235CC). If you want a cat under this size, you can look for a custom builder or search the used boat market. Twin Vee made plenty of 19- to 22-foot boats in years past, Tideline made a 19, and when they were in operation, catamaran boat brands like Leader and Nautico made a number of powercats between 14 and 21 feet.

Choosing the Best Catamaran Brand For You

Are there some powercat brands out there that build a great boat, but we haven’t mentioned? Absolutely. Arrow Cat builds a pair of interesting cabin boats that aren’t 100-percent fishing machines, but do have semi-fishy cockpits that would work just fine for plenty of people. C Dory makes a 25-footer that falls into the same category. And Aquila , which traditionally built large cruising boats, has recently introduced a 28-foot center console billed as a fishing boat. Any of these, or others, could be the “best” brand for you, depending on your personal needs and tastes. But the power catamaran fishing boat manufacturers we’ve called out here are all arguably at the top of the heap—nd if you take one for a sea trial, we’re betting you’ll agree.

Four Best Small Rafts for Fly Fishing

Two- and three-man rafts open up new water, streams, and ponds.

Four Best Small Rafts for Fly Fishing

A new generation of lightweight rafts is making new water accessible to adventurous fly fishers because you can launch them anywhere, and the shallow-drafting boats can float small streams or large rivers in low-water conditions without grinding the bottom all day. Here, Pennsylvania smallmouth guide Brian Shumaker explores a shallow boulder garden on the Susquehanna River. (Jay Nichols photo)

This article was originally titled "Micro Rafts" in the 2020 Gear Guide special publication of Fly Fisherman magazine.

Along with Euro Nymphing and Tenkara, narrow-profile, lightweight two- and three-person rafts are among the hot new trends in fly fishing. And just as Czech nymphing has offered anglers solutions for catching trout in waters previously unfishable, micro rafts have opened up fishing opportunities previously only dreamed of—and they offer big performance in a small package.

Because they are so easily transportable, and can be launched almost anywhere, every section of stream that you might have driven along and wondered about now becomes a possibility. “A lot of our streams don’t have designated access areas,” says George Daniel, owner of Livin’ on the Fly, a guiding business in central Pennsylvania. “Two people can launch these boats with ease, and even carry them to the stream, so you have minimal impact on the land. It’s important to pay attention to private property, but on public land, a lot of times I lift my boat over a guard rail to launch, which you just can’t do with a full-size raft.” Their light weight is also a boon for portages, and the compact design is ideal for navigating narrow chutes and tight water, or “creek-boating” brushy, narrow streams where you may not be fishing out of the boat, but using it as transportation between fishing spots.

This article isn’t comprehensive, but it’s meant to look at some of the available options on the market today and hopefully whet your appetite to test some of these on the water. It isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison or review. Most manufacturers have boats for two and for three anglers, and there isn’t space to feature all of them here. Second, just as one fly rod probably won’t cover all your needs, there simply is no single perfect boat for all situations (which is why many end up owning several in a lifetime).

For your first boat, it is important to consider some of your basic needs and where you are fishing. Some of the main points of discussion that tend to come up when weighing the pros and cons of these craft center around number of anglers, frame construction, and whether the boat is self-bailing.

A boat that accommodates a rower and two anglers is likely heavier and more expensive than one that is designed for a rower and one angler. Most guides require a boat that will accommodate two anglers, but a smaller, more portable craft may be for you. Most of the boats here come with multi-piece frames, which have multiple advantages: lower shipping costs to consumer, ability to store small or ship to destination easily, and ability to replace a broken piece.

The SmithFly Big Shoals ships with a one-piece frame, which means it comes in a giant crate, by freight, and you can’t exactly ship your boat off to float a remote river in Alaska. Some fly fishers don’t require breaking down the frame, and prefer the slight advantage of a more responsive, rigid, one-piece frame.

Taking the true spirit of these micro rafts to a new level are the rack-and-pinion oar system and frameless option of a boat such as Scadden’s Dragonfly. By jettisoning the frame altogether and using inflatable seats or even dry bags stuffed with gear, and the rack-and-pinion oar mounts attached to the side of the raft, you can tuck this boat into the trunk of a Camry, as packed baggage on a plane, or strap it to the side of a packhorse for a wilderness float. Outcast’s Striker can also be used in this way, though the oarlocks slide into their PVC sleeves integrated into the side of the boat.

Self-bailing or not? A self-bailing boat has holes just below an inflatable floor that drain water out of the boat, whereas a non-self-bailing, or “bucket boat” does not and requires a pump or a bucket in the event it takes on water. Rigid, inflatable floors have changed the way these rafts function. “The floor keeps the boat rigid and enhances performance dramatically in every category, yet still allows for self-bailing,” says Dave Scadden. “Old self-bailing systems did not have this rigidity and really hindered the performance of a raft, not to mention the fact that they were near impossible to stand and sight fish.”

Ben Scribner at FlyCraft says they tested the self-bailing options for the Stealth and felt that the holes in the bottom of the boat compromised draft and maneuverability, and it is true that many old-time river runners agree that self-bailing boats drag more and also can get caught on rocks easier. (They provide a bail pump with those boats, and FlyCraft’s new three-man boat is self-bailing.)

On the other hand, river veteran Dave Scadden always recommends a self-bailing boat. He points out that there are too many safety issues with taking on water from high waves (whether on a river or still water, when the wind can pick up). Plus, a boat that isn’t self-bailing can fill up with rain water, and draining it adds another step to a trip that already met with bad weather.

This new generation of small rafts also draw very little water, in some cases only three or four inches. This dramatically increases your fishing opportunities, keeping you in the game throughout the low-water season. Virginia smallmouth, trout, and muskie guide Blane Chocklett loves these boats because they allow him to navigate changing water conditions, keeping his clients on the water and into fish. “For the last five years, we have had extreme weather, which has made guiding a challenge. In the SmithFly that I currently am using, I can fish smaller creeks when we have lots of rain and the bigger rivers are blown out, and I can fish small creeks and larger rivers longer through the season when they drop too low to float in a hard boat. This season we are in a drought, and I have been relying on my small raft to float sections of river that I might have been able to float in my drift boat with average water flows. Without this boat, we wouldn’t be fishing.”

And these rafts are not just for moving waters. Colorado guide Landon Mayer uses his FlyCraft when the Callibaetis hatch is on his local stillwaters. Stalking reservoir shallows for cruising fish allows him to fish while the rivers are experiencing runoff, or offer his clients a solitary experience when the rivers are crowded. Mayer loads the lightweight boat in the back of his truck and puts it in far from the public launches. He uses a trolling motor to get to the fish.

One of the magical things about fishing from a raft or drift boat is that rowing is often as much fun as fishing. When both are done well, the boat as a whole nets more fish at the end of the day than if only one angler tried to fish and steer at the same time. While you are not fishing 100% of the time, the time that you are fishing is so much more effective, especially so when a competent rower and angler work as a team. The whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

Small-Raft Accessories for Fly Fishing

Once you decide on your fishing platform, a few accessories can go a long way to making your day on the water more comfortable, and more successful. Guide Blane Chocklett says, “with good organization, these boats can seem a lot bigger than they are.” Chocklett outfits his boat with 8 1/2' Sawyer DyneLite Shoal Cut Oars; a Yeti Tundra 45 in lieu of a front seat that does triple service as a seat, standing platform, and dry storage; a Yeti Hopper cooler; and the new Yeti Loadout GoBox 30 for dry storage under the rower’s seat. When needed, Yeti Sidekick dry bags wrapped around the raft frame provide modular dry storage for sundries such as keys, wallet, and license. On longer trips a Panga 75, which is Yeti’s fully submersible dry bag, tucked away in back is perfect for spare clothes and other items that you need to keep organized and dry. Your layout may vary depending on your needs; the point is that the cleaner you keep these boats, the more of a pleasure they are to fish from—and that is true of all watercraft.

Four Best Small Rafts for Fly Fishing

All of these raft brands have a complete line of accessories available, including motor mounts, but it’s important to compare when you buy to see what accessories are included in the base price of the package. Many manufacturers offer specials, either on the web or at fishing shows. In addition to dry storage, pretty well covered by Chocklett’s basic plan (above), the following are a few accessories that are important.

Pump. Not all of the rafts ship with a premium pump. Some of the pumps I have seen come with these boats are almost useless. Unless you have a few kids at your disposal, I highly recommend getting an electric pump or air compressor to inflate the boat when you unpack it. An electric pump is a huge time saver for getting a flaccid boat a head start. After that is done, top it off with a high-quality hand pump such as the K Pump (k-pump.com/) or a premium pump from NRS (nrs.com). Bring the pump, along with a patch and valve kit, along with you on each fishing trip.

Oars. Lightweight, packable oars come with every boat, and for casual users or someone who demands extreme portability, they are fine. Most guides upgrade to something like 8' or 8 ½' Sawyer SquareTop DyneLite Oars ($375, paddlesandoars.com). These provide more power and responsiveness and comfort and are closer to what they row in their larger drift boats or rafts.

Guide George Daniel considers a shoal cut oar a must on his home waters: “A lot of our streams have narrow chutes and pockets interspersed with shallow water. A shoal cut oar blade allows you to steer or hold the boat in water that is only a few inches deep. With a three-man raft loaded with gear, heavier shafts are very helpful to get the boat to respond the way you need it to.”

Keep in mind that you’ll also have to swap out the oarlocks on your micro raft to ones that accommodate a 2-inch shaft, though the new FlyCraft Three Man comes with them standard. Stripping Basket. Some boats come with one, some do not. The ones with the baskets high up on the bar in front of the boat aren’t all that great for arm motion when stripping streamers, so you might have to come up with an alternative solution for line management, which is always critical in a boat. A simple bucket or basket offers a huge improvement over nothing, and is almost mandatory for the angler in the back in a three-seater. Whenever I leave my basket home, I always wish I had brought it.

Rod Holders. Whether you rig your own from PVC tubes lashed to the frame, or opt for one of the manufacturers’ add-ons, rod holders are a good idea for three reasons: 1. They protect your rods from getting stepped on while getting in and out of the boat, 2. They prevent your line and fly from tangling together as they invariably do if you just pile a few rods on the side frame of the boat, and 3. They keep the rods in the boat in the course of an unwelcome, but likely, quick “oh crap!” maneuver where you bounce off a rock or have to go through low-hanging trees that can grab your gear. To work as planned and keep your rods safe, you have to use them consistently.

Anchors/Anchor System. Unless you are traveling ultralight, having a professional anchor system is a boon and allows you to anchor up on a pod of feeding fish, or stop to rig or net a fish so you don’t blow by all that good water. Boats such as FlyCraft and Scadden have anchor systems where the rope runs through the frame to keep the boat as clean and snag-free as possible.

Boats such as the SmithFly have a more conventional anchor system typically found on drift boats. Because these boats are not as heavy as a conventional raft or drift boat, a 20-pound anchor should suffice. Tip: Add another pulley before the anchor to increase the mechanical advantage and make it a piece of cake to pull up—every bit helps on an eight-hour float.

Cleaning Accessories. A Magic Eraser and a good vinyl cleaner and protectant clean the scum off your boat and protect it for a longer life. NRS and West Marine both have Inflatable Boat Cleaner for Hypalon and PVC that works very well. After a thorough cleaning, treat with 303 Aerospace Protectant. When storing a raft for the season, deflate it slightly if keeping it together, and out of the sun. If taking it apart, make sure it is completely dry and roll it up, and also out of harm’s way from rodents.

Hitting the Water in a Small Fly-Fishing Raft

These craft offer an excellent entry point into float fishing—a fully accessorized package costs only a fraction of what a full-size raft or drift boat does. Because they allow more people than ever before to hit the water, it is inevitable that these rafts will provide many people with their first experience with boating, as well as boating safety and ramp and river etiquette.

The type of gear you buy is important, but so is how you use it. It is critical  to remember to practice boating safety and practice basic maneuvers on gentle water before taking on anything serious. Even if you don’t plan on tackling serious whitewater with these boats, it doesn’t take much to get into trouble, and small, tight streams with lots of deadfalls and sweepers present their own challenges. Always use caution and follow all safety rules in your state. Make sure to pack PFDs, an air horn or whistle, first-aid kit, and a change of clothes.

Remember to be respectful of other boaters, both on the water and at the ramps. Make sure that you prepare your boat before you are on the ramp so that you don’t hold up other anglers who are also eager to get to the water. On the water, don’t crowd other boats or try to high-hole another boat (row ahead to beat them to a spot they were clearly drifting to). Give wading anglers ample berth, and try, if possible, to float behind them, not in front where they are fishing.

Many stretches that were once important sanctuaries for fish because they were otherwise inaccessible can now be reached by these rafts. This is a very good thing for you, but do consider the impact on the fishery by not focusing on thermal refuges and not pounding the same stretch of water on consecutive days. The best guides rotate their floats, and you should too.

Flycraft Stealth

Four Best Small Rafts for Fly Fishing

While other manufacturers were exploring lightweight pontoons and personal watercraft, this boat really kickstarted the micro raft craze. Owners love this lightweight boat for the ease of transport and maneuverability in tight spaces. The through-the-frame anchor system, rear storage rack, and optional quick-release seats are thoughtful, well-designed features.

New for 2019, FlyCraft is also introducing the Three Man Raft with a self-bailing floor, which has several features that distinguish it from other boats in its class, including drift boat-style leg braces, oarlocks to accommodate larger 2" oars, run-through-the frame anchor system, and gear rack storage.

The two-man raft shown in the photo belongs to George Daniel, owner of Livin on the Fly ( livinonthefly.com ). For work he uses the new Three-Man because it maintains a slim profile and maneuverability yet increases the cargo capacity, stability, and option to fish two guided anglers.

12.5' L x 46" W, 98 LBS (without oars and basket), non-self-bailing, rigid floor insert, through-the-frame anchor system, Leafield C7 valves. $3,800 (Fisherman Package); $5,000 (3 person); flycraftusa.com .

Scadden Dragonfly XT

Four Best Small Rafts for Fly Fishing

This is a feature-rich river- and lake-fishing machine created by Dave Scadden, a pioneer and evangelist for lightweight fishing craft for almost 30 years. Scadden calls this boat, which has a 1,500-pound capacity for extended trips and a Class V whitewater rating, both a workhorse and a sports car. Key features of this boat are the option to go completely frameless and use the rack-and-pinion oar mounts on the sides for an ultra-lightweight package. Scadden oars have adjustable lengths and an unconventional blade design that, according to Scadden, provides three times the power on each stroke. The Dragonfly series of boats also includes a one-person and a three-person version.

Check out the YouTube video of Mikey Wier and friends tackling some serious whitewater in Northern California with these boats.

10' L x 54" W, 100 lbs, self-bailing, through-the-frame anchor system, Bravo Valves; $3,900 (XT - 1 person); $4,800 (XT3 - 3 person); davescaddenpaddlesports.com .

Outcast (OSG) Striker

Four Best Small Rafts for Fly Fishing

The most compact boat of this bunch, the OSG Striker’s minimal frame and removable inflatable lean bar simplify setup so you spend less time tinkering with the boat, and more time fishing. The seats and frames on all of these boats take up considerable space. As with the Scadden boat, you can go almost frameless (using only the oar mounts) for an ultra-lightweight, super packable fishing craft. With this boat, you assemble the frame and slip it into reinforced PVC sleeves on the sides before inflating the boat, after which everything comes tight. Integrated Gear System (IGS) incorporates PVC sleeves with a movable base mount pad that accepts cargo pockets, rod holders, and anchors. This raft doesn’t have the removable rigid floor like the others in this article, though the floor has its own valve/chamber and inflates to become firm. According to Outcast’s Chris Callanan, “It was intentional to keep the weight at 100 pounds and make it as portable as possible. The bladder inside the floor pocket is oversized so we can get it to full pressure at 2.5 psi so it’s very firm.”

9.5' L x 5' W, 102 lbs, Summit II valves, self-bailing, optional anchor system; $2,500; outcastboats.com .

Smithfly Big Shoals

Four Best Small Rafts for Fly Fishing

This boat has a one-piece frame, a popular option among guides who want to add a shallow-floating, lightweight craft to their fleet, and don’t care as much about portability. According to SmithFly: “We chose durability over portability. That isn’t to say that there isn’t a place for a portable, packable raft, for some people that is important, but for us the rigid welded aluminum tube frame is paramount.” It has an adjustable lean bar in the bow and accommodates two anglers and a rower. Among the attractive things about these boats are the many customizable options, such as coolers instead of seats, flip-up rower’s seat, casting platform on the bow, or poling platform at the rear. The removable floor is very firm and has a quilted raised texture. Available in three colors: gray, woodland camo, and digi camo.

The Boat Shown belongs to Joe Koehly of Yeti Coolers. Joe outfitted his SmithFly big shoals with a Yeti Loadout GoBox under the seat, upgraded to Sawyer oars, and added a motor mount.

13'6" L x 4'6" W, 125 lbs, self-bailing, Dierks anchor, Summit valves; $4,000; smithfly.com .

How to Tie the Picky Eater Perdigon

Like it or not, competition angling is driving many of the advancements in our sport. And while I generally find Perdigons and their cousins to be pretty boring flies, Zach VanDeHey, a 39-year-old Oregonian, and his approach to his Picky Eater Perdigon gives me hope for the future. VanDeHey hatched the idea for his Picky Eater while feeling was that his conventional Perdigons were sinking too fast. Though the entire premise behind slender-bodied nymphs with big tungsten beads is to plummet through the water column to the bottom, these fish were feeding in the middle of the water column. VanDeHey got to work on the vise to design a fly that would sink more slowly and spawned the brilliant idea of not only downsizing the bead, but also adding a dubbing-loop CDC collar to function as a parachute and reduce the rate of descent. This flowing CDC collar adds tons of fluid motion to the fly, and creates enough drag and lift to keep the fly drifting mid-column. Follow along as I twist up this super-fishy fly.

How to Tie Dorsey's Top Secret Baetis Fly

These days there are so many reasonably simple fly patterns that work well but have no soul or appeal to fly tiers. Based off the success of his remarkable Top Secret Midge pattern, Dorsey took a familiar route to alter that pattern slightly to create this effective Baetis imitation. The beauty of this fly is that it is tied from very commonly available materials—for the most part, albeit with some necessary modern-day substitutions—and it is straightforward to tie.

Best Flats Boats for Fishing

  • By SWS Staff
  • Updated: June 22, 2022

Poling the flats for fish

If you intend to stalk bonefish, redfish, permit, snook, striped bass, tarpon or any other inshore game fish on the flats, salt marshes, or other shallow water areas, flats boats and flats skiffs — designed precisely for that style of saltwater angling — offer the greatest advantages to successfully sneak up on your favorite target species, including the shallow draft necessary to venture onto skinny water.

Naturally most of us start our boat search with trying to find the best flats boat for the money, but maybe your budget is a bit higher than most and you can look beyond the category of an affordable flats boat. If that’s the case, you’ll find plenty of those options here as well. Smaller flats skiffs are included too.

To help you find the one that best suits your specific needs and budget, the Salt Water Sportsman staff has compiled and updated a guide to the best flats boats for sale today, comprising timeless classics and the latest designs from numerous manufacturers. Scroll down to check out our list of top 16- to 19-foot options (in no particular order) for serious shallow water fishing.

Maverick 17 HPX-V II poling

With its surprising open-water running capability, and quiet and precise poling proficiency, the Maverick 17 HPX-V II has been the bench mark for top-notch technical poling skiffs since its introduction. This skiff is designed for anglers who want top performance in the toughest and most technically challenging poling situations. This next generation of the 17 HPX-V now offers more easy-to-access dry storage, plus a lighter hull, better balanced to match with smaller outboards like a Yamaha F70.

Yellowfin 17CE skimming across the bay

Yellowfin has a new and improved version of its 17 Skiff, the 17 CE (Carbon Elite), features the same simple, but functional and ergonomically designed deck layout as the original 17 Skiff, but with a new hull design and cutting-edge construction techniques and materials. It incorporates a deeper deadrise and sharper entry for long runs across choppy water, new molded-in spray rails, a single step in the boat’s running surface for greater speed and efficiency.

Hewes Redfisher 18 from the bow

This versatile, mid-sized skiff has been a prime choice of many backcountry anglers for decades. Recently redesigned, the Redfisher 18 now has a dedicated anchor locker, a new console that accommodates flush-mounted electronic displays up to 12 inches, and a clever cushion setup. The boat is now built using vacuum infusion (VARIS) for an even lighter, faster and stronger hull that is well balanced with either a 115 or 150 hp outboard. An optional backrest/step integrated into the poling tower provide added comfort and safety.

Xplor X7 running wide open

Xplor Boatworks’ newest skiff, the X7, combines a functional design topside and a smooth- and dry-running hull with performance pad and 7-degree deadrise at the transom. The X7 features numerous storage and livewell options, and boasts the newest design in integrated spray rails that channel water down and away from the boat while underway.

East Cape EVO on the flats

According to the folks at East Cape Skiffs, this flats boat was built to dominate South Florida’s flats fishing scene, much of which centers around the wide-open oceanside shallows of Biscayne Bay and the Keys, where stiff winds and a moderate chop are commonplace. Built to take sizeable waves while still providing a soft, comfortable ride, with its massive built-in spray rails keeping spray to an absolute minimum, the EVO is also fast, extremely maneuverable, and it floats and poles shallow enough to chase tailers pushing up the skinniest of waters. Dry storage is extensive, and the massive round livewell, conveniently located in the middle of the aft deck, enables anglers to carry a substantial supply of baitfish for live-baiting mangrove shorelines or inlets and passes. As with all East Cape Skiff models, every EVO is a custom build, and the layout may include anything from a side console to a tower with elevated helm, to the classic center console with bench-style seating or a removable leaning post.

Floyd Skiff 10 Weight beached

A collaboration between industry legend Chris Morejohn and Brian Floyd, the 10 Weight from Floyd Skiff Company reflects an original technical poling skiff design that will travers open water with ease and comfort, draft just 7 inches, and pole silently when stalking prey on the flats. It features a center console with seat, 30-gallon livewell, hydraulic steering, electric trim tabs, under-gunwale rod racks, and more.

The hull, inner liner and deck are all made completely of composite materials and fused together for maximum strength and durability. The hull shape is a modified version of the high-performance deep-V from the 16-foot Super Skiff Pro, making the 17 a quick and nimble technical poling skiff that slices through a 2-foot chop and still poles in 8 inches of water. The oversize forward deck makes a perfect casting platform, while the in-floor cast-net and dry-storage compartments accommodate enough gear for 4 anglers. Fore- and aft-facing under-gunwale rod racks hold up to 10 rods. And the ergonomically designed helm seat behind the center console folds down to extend the aft deck for additional casting room. In addition, the 17 Superskiff Pro comes loaded with features like hydraulic steering, trim tabs, gas shocks on all hatches, a 32-gallon oval livewell with high-speed pick up and push-pole holders that increase comfort and make the boat a truly versatile fishing platform.

Twin compartments provide ample aft storage and bookend a 30-gallon livewell with dual in-flow system and raw-water, high-speed pickup.

Beavertail 17 Strike on the trailer

Beavertail considers this the Swiss Army Knife of its boat lineup. The builder claims it can take the rough oceanside conditions often encountered when targeting tarpon in Florida during the annual migration, and also run and pole easily on shallow, backcountry flats to stalk tailing redfish and bonefish. Stealth is a major virtue of the Strike, which Beavertail built to enable anglers to pole silently into position and cast to wary game fish with two to three anglers aboard. This third generation Beavertail was designed to deliver tons of storage and a truly dry ride, thanks to the huge flared bow inspired by Carolina sport fishing yachts. With a unique semi-tunnel hull, and rated for up to 90hp, the builder promises this boat will jump up and race across the skinniest flats without leaving you high-and-dry. Rod racks under both gunwales, trim tabs, jack plate with 4-inch setback, custom poling platform, and an 8-gallon crustacean well with clear lid to keep tabs on the bait are among the boat’s many features.

With outboards from 70 to 115 hp, this boat can cover lots of ground comfortably and safely, even in bigger water. Its wide beam and walkaround gunwales offer an exceptionally stable fishing platform.

East Cape Fury ready for fishing

Much like the Vantage, East Cape’s largest skiff, the Fury sports a considerable bow flare and large spray rails incorporated into the hull to knock down any spray and keep anglers dry. The flare, which gradually lessens toward midship, enables a wide forward deck with sizeable storage despite the skiff’s small footprint. It also floats very shallow for an 18-footer. And lightweight and narrow at the waterline, the Fury glides and spins readily with little effort when poling, and it requires only a 60 hp motor to run in the mid 30s. A large livewell, rod tubes below the gunwales and additional dry storage in back are among the boat’s key features. As with all other East Cape models, all Fury skiffs are custom built, and a variety of configurations, with different consoles, seating, rod racks, poling and casting platforms, and even towers are available.

Spyder FX17 Flicker running to the flats

Like Spyder’s larger FX model, the 17-foot Flicker is built with biaxial fiberglass, premium resins, pressure-foamed stringer construction, Baltek foam coring and Nida-Core decks for superb strength without added weight. That lighter weight enables the skiff to achieve top performance with a smaller motor, it makes poling easy and rewards flats anglers with a 7-inch draft. The boat features in-deck storage fore and aft, including twin 70-quart outboard compartments and a livewell with high-speed pick up between them. Standard equipment includes under-gunwale racks for 4 rods, vertical racks for 4 rods on the console (2 on each side), 4-switch panel and trolling motor harness. The Redfish and Pro Flats packages offer a number of upgrades, including finished fiberglass hatches, hydraulic steering, hydraulic jack plate, trim tabs, LED cockpit lighting, a poling platform and more.

A narrow console affords plenty of cockpit room, and wide, 13-inch gunwales provide for easy walk-around and loads of rod storage underneath. A bench-style seat with flip-down back rest is standard, and includes dry storage underneath for two trolling motor batteries. Chittum Islamorada 18 Legacy launching at the ramp

Stealth and shallow draft are the cornerstones of this full size skiff, built on a patented hull that weighs a mere 400 pounds before rigging and incorporates massive built-in spray rails for a super dry ride, a staggered split chine below the waterline for silent poling, and a radius transom (with no sponsons) to prevent rebound waves that may spook fish. The 18 Legacy is offered in two hull forms: the S with 12-degree deadrise and the SS with 2-degree deadrise, both loaded with features like a “floating” center console with 360-degree toe kick and forward seat with a large insulated ice chest, hydraulic steering, trim tabs, two large aft dry storage lockers, aft anchor/dry storage compartment, 14-rod racks under the gunnels with rod tubes fore and aft, 30-gallon baitwell/release well, carbon-fiber poling platform with with SeaDek, LED lighting in all compartments, wells, console and under gunnels, custom stainless steel and aluminum trailer with walk boards, and more.

Bay Craft Bone Skiff 162 in the shallows

Designed for anglers who want ample storage and fishing room in an easy-store, shallow-water boat, Bay Craft’s Bone Skiff measures only 18.6 feet in length on a trailer with a swing-away tongue to fit easily in most garages. Yellowfin 17 CC running under a bridge

The workmanship and attention to detail that go into Yellowfin’s offshore center consoles and bay boats is also evident in the 17 CC, the company’s technical poling skiff model. Weighing just 600 pounds, the boat is light and responsive on the pole and it tracks well. Aggressive pebble-style nonskid finish provides good traction even in wet conditions, and the integrated spray rails keep anglers dry during open-water crossings, so this is the kind of technical poling skiff that makes fishing on rough days easier. The boat features a low-profile side console, a cavernous 35-gallon livewell and under-gunwale storage for up to six fully rigged 9-foot fly rods. The cockpit drain system, a unique design feature, allows the boat to self-bail while underway and remain bone-dry at rest with the simple quick turn of the seacocks.

East Cape Vantage fishing the flats

At just over 19 feet, the Vantage has the length to reach the next wave without stuffing the bow when running in choppy, open water, which the V and the deadrise make quite comfortable. The bow flare and large spray rails smartly incorporated in the hull’s design allow the builder to tout the boat as the driest skiff in existence. Despite the 79-inch beam, relatively narrow for a 19-footer, the hull’s footprint is even smaller, helping the skiff attain high speeds, remain nimble and negotiate rough water with ease. When poling, the Vantage exhibits a smaller boat attitude. It tracks very well and spins readily without much effort. On top, the fore and aft casting decks are massive. A cavernous compartment in the front and two generous ones in the rear afford ample storage, and the deep gutters and thick gaskets ensure the contents stay dry. A huge livewell in the aft deck easily accommodates a pair of tournament winning fish or more than enough live bait to chum with. As is the case with other premium skiffs, every Vantage is custom built in a variety of configurations, with different consoles, seating, rod racks, poling and casting platforms, and even towers available, along with a wealth of options, like a hydraulic jack plate, shallow-water anchoring system and more.

Dolphin 18 Backcountry Pro on a glassy bay

Tarpon and backcountry guides from Jupiter to Key West have been fishing aboard the 18 Back Country Pro for over twenty years and brag about its stability in open bays and inlets, the way the deep-V hull cuts through a chop, and the 10-inches of water it only requires to float. With a maximum horsepower rating of 150, this boat tops at around 55 mph, so it’s easy to reach hot spots deep in the backcountry in time for the morning bite, and pick up the family to water ski or dive the patch reefs in the afternoon. Extensive standard features include waterproof switches with circuit breakers, hydraulic steering, trim tabs, cockpit lighting under gunnels and inside livewell and aft storage compartment, in-floor cast net compartment, large dry storage compartments fore and aft, 2 oval livewells (39 gallons combined) with high-speed pickup, storage racks with tubes for 10 rods under the gunnels, poling Platform, recessed push-pole holders, and more.

Beavertail 18 Air running fast

The Beavertail Air was designed to handle the big water of open bays, yet still access the shallow flats where trophy fish live. Built with tournament anglers at heart, the Air sports 360 degrees of fishability, loads of dry storage, and offers an optional 25-gallon release well. Constructed with the most advanced coring & carbon kevlar materials, the hull is infused to create a solid, yet lightweight structure able to take on the toughest of conditions and still float skinny. And with a full stepped hull and a maximum power rating of 115 horses, Beavertail says the 18-foot Air will get you to the fishing grounds and back fast, dry and in comfort. Key standard features include a large forward casting deck with anchor locker, forward large dry-storage compartment, 30-gallon insulated livewell, two large aft storage compartments which can be plumbed as release wells, trim tabs, jack plate, center console with insulated cooler under forward jump seat, hydraulic steering, under-gunnel rod racks for rods up to 10 feet long, and custom poling platform.

Egret 167 poling flats

The smaller sibling to Egret’s signature 189 model is still a sizable platform for inshore anglers to navigate in comfort and fish shallow flats unencumbered. Like the larger 189, this boat reaches considerable speeds and takes on big, open water with gusto. Thanks to the 167′s design, materials and construction, every one that leaves the factory is as light and strong as possible. The hull was design to provide a soft, dry ride, and still float and pole surprisingly skinny. Dry storage at the bow and the rear is both generous and easy to access. Rod lockers along both gunwales include racks that cradle rods pointing fore and aft and prevent tangles. A Ritchie compass, an aluminum poling platform with welded rod holders, trim tabs, hydraulic steering, push-pole holders, cockpit lighting and engine gauges are part of the many standard features.

Dragonfly Grand Slam 17 in the bay

The combination of classic lines and innovative features really sets the Grand Slam 17 apart. The design incorporates many of yesteryear’s eye-pleasing lines in a skiff built with the latest technology to offer comfort and versatility, performing at the level professional guides and serious flats anglers demand. Whether poling in skinny water or storming across an open bay to the next fishing spot, this Dragonfly is sure to please. The skiff is finely tuned and balanced for easy and quiet poling. There’s ample storage, and a recessed shelf keeps batteries secure and out of the way while affording complete access to the front locker and the trolling motor connections. The Sportfishing Console, a popular option, includes 6 integrated upright rod holders and a slide-out drawer to keep essentials at arms length but out of the elements. Recessed grab handles, oversize cockpit drains plumbed directly to the bilge, a Simpson bracket that makes servicing the bilge pump a cinch, recessed push-pole holders that flip up and retract in unison, and a 22-gallon oval livewell with clear lid and LED underwater lights are among the many other smart appointments available.

Hell's Bay Biscayne running through shallows

Designed to provide a comfortable ride while crossing rough water oceanside or across open bays and still pole over shallow flats with ease, the Biscayne may be Hell Bay’s most versatile flats skiff. Its Kevlar hull is designed with a small footprint and a sharp entry to cut through a chop, with spray rails incorporated to ensure the ride is always dry, even in open water. Vacuum-bagged Core-Cell construction throughout make the skiff strong and tough while keeping the weight down. The flat transom allows the poler to spin the skiff quickly and sharply, while a large hatch up front and a pair of smaller shotgun-style hatches in the rear provide access to generous dry storage compartments. All hatches include a slam-latch design, which locks down the hatch as you close it for extra security and peace of mind. Under-gunwale rod racks accommodate seven fly rods, and the top surface of the standard poling platform comes covered in SeaDek for added comfort.

Sterling TR7 in profile

This unique skiff incorporates a non-slap hull design that makes it a stealthy fishing platform, with a tunnel that runs the entire length of the boat, allowing the motor to be set higher and run at high speed in ankle-deep water. The tunnel also acts as a keel during high-speed turns and helps the boat track straight while poling. Like all Sterling models, the TR7 is built using a proprietary, three-piece construction process whereby the outer hull and inner liner are bonded together, injected with foam flotation under high pressure and then chemically bonded together with the cap to form one solid piece. The boat is made entirely of carbon fiber and Kevlar, delivering a hull weight of just over 500 pounds. Standard features include the poling platform, trim tabs, hydraulic jack plate, a 10-gallon baitwell and 25-gallon release well, removable backrest, LED courtesy lights and a custom Ameritrail aluminum trailer.

Spyder FX19 Vapor heading out for fishing

With a length of 19 feet and a narrow beam of 6 feet, 11 inches, the FX19 Vapor requires less power to achieve top performance. The long planing pad and transom pocket increase its shallow-water capability. The boat is responsive on the run and takes tight turns as if it were on rails. It also glides and spins easily with the push pole, with hull slap negligible at worst. There’s a 100-quart insulated fish box in the forward deck to ice down the day’s catch and three 70-quart storage compartments, two of them located aft, bookending a release well with high-speed pickup. The Vapor also comes pre-wired for a trolling motor, with a molded pad on the bow to accommodate a quick-release mount, and rod racks — carpeted and recessed — under the gunwales. Finished fiberglass hatches, upgraded vertical console racks for 6 rods, cockpit and baitwell lighting, and a removable folding backrest are included with the Redfish or Pro Flats packages. The latter also includes a poling platform with hinged legs so it lies forward when servicing the motor.

Mako 18 LTS in a glassy bay

The 18 LTS is a clean, simple and well-executed boat that excels at many things. The foredeck is accented with a nice toe rail and incorporates a large casting platform with a sizeable dry-storage compartment underneath. There is a place for an optional trolling motor on the foredeck and a large anchor locker forward with a double-sided hatch and a gasket to keep water out. There are three vertical rod holders on each side of the console, and the cushioned forward console seat houses an 18-gallon aerated livewell. The business side of the console has a panel for flush-mounting electronics, a side-mount binnacle control to save dash space, and a gauge cluster that’s easily read in front of the helm. The console seat is a 72-quart cushioned cooler with a flip-flop backrest, so you can sit facing aft when drifting and lean back. Along with a long list of standard features, every 18 LTS comes with a trailer, and Mako also offers a wealth of options to rig out the boat for any situation.

Walk-around gunnels are complemented with rod racks underneath, and the 30-gallon livewell with rounded corners comes plumbed to circulate water from the bottom up to ensure good flow of raw water and keep live bait nice and frisky. FastCat12™ Catamaran Reviews

I did a ton of research before I pulled the trigger on this boat and it paid off. My first trip was in San Diego in mission bay and the boat was perfect. My self and father-in-law fished the bay for a week with no issues and were blown away how stable the boat was and received a ton of compliments. The 5hp mercury outboard compliments the boat.

I love my Seaeagle 12 Fast Cat. Use it almost everyday in Florida. Customer service is great. Had a valve leak and they sent me a box and had it back in a couple of weeks with shipping time. Just the right size if I need to deflate it and store it. Great ride and just a solid built boat.

Boat is really great. I got all the extras with electric pump, seats, bimini etc. Sets up pretty quick and easy. I went with an electric 83lbs thrust motor and batteries ( 24 volt). I can run for hours! Great to take on vacation with us. We have an RV and like to bring the golf cart and the boat once deflated takes up no room at all.

The unit fits all of our needs. It is very stable with two passengers. Plenty of room to carry a cooler. The sun shade does act like a sail in the wind but you just make the best of it. The electric motor allows one to do some fishing and not have to stay in one spot for any time. Overall, good quality, came in a timely manner and was fairly easy to assemble. It definitely takes two people to move around when inflated.

The 27′ Gen2 is great for any recreational or commercial use and can be fully customized to meet your needs. With great handling from this center console fishing boat, docking the 27′ Gen2 is a breeze.

Who is the Flip-Kat® Made For?

The Flip-Kat® is the ultimate kayak for hunters who want a versatile and portable boat that can handle the demands of the great outdoors. Its flat bottom catamaran hull design allows it to navigate shallow waters with ease, making it perfect for stalking game in the marsh or the river. The kayak's integrated pedal drive provides a whisper-quiet propulsion system that won't spook game, and its adjustable chair/leaning post combination allows the user to customize their seating position for maximum comfort and ease of use during long hunting excursions. With its ability to navigate shallow waters, the Flip-Kat® allows hunters to easily pedal or paddle the kayak right to the edge of the land, swiftly hop out, and shoot game. Additionally, the kayak can be easily converted into a mobile hunting blind, making it perfect for duck hunting. Whether you're hunting in the marsh, the river, or the lake, the Flip-Kat® is the perfect kayak for hunters who want to take their adventure to the next level. Read our blog on Choosing a Hunting Kayak to learn more!

The Flip-Kat® is the perfect kayak for fishermen who want a versatile and portable boat with an integrated pedal drive, leaving their hands free to fish. The kayak's pedal drive provides a whisper-quiet propulsion system that won't disturb fish, and its adjustable chair/leaning post combination allows the user to stand, sit, or lean in over 57 different positions. The Flip-Kat® offers a multitude of T-tracks and storage space for fishing gear and a telescoping canopy that protects the user from the sun while still enabling obstacle-free casting. Additionally, the Flip-Kat's stability empowers the user to easily stand up and capture photos, resulting in completely unique shots. Its ability to be stored inside or on the back of a vehicle full time yet be rapidly deployed when the need arises. The Flip-Kat® is a very capable and steady platform at 4 feet wide and over 11 feet long. This makes it significantly more secure than the traditional kayak; especially when dealing with panicked people or wildlife. With four sealed pontoons, staying afloat is significantly more reliable in rough situations.

Flip-kat features

Stable + Playful

The large 4-foot-wide deck gives you plenty of stand up, stable, moving around room so you’re not stuck in that one aching position all day. In hot weather, you can take a dip in the water and use the pull-down step system to get back on deck easily!

Pybus Point Lodge is proud to announce the official launching of two brand new, catamaran style, fishing and touring boats from ACI Boats. This is the second time we’ve had the pleasure of working with ACI and once again, they exceeded our expectations. Since we run a premium fishing and adventure lodge, we don’t just have to worry about our boats being safe and functional–we also have to make sure that our boats have the style and comfort that our guests expect.

ACI Boats is thrilled to announce the official award of a $3 million dollar contract with American Samoa’s Departmant of Commerce for four “Super Alia” commercial fishing vessels. All four boats will be manufactured at ACI Boats’ facility in Port Townsend, WA. The vessels themselves will be 38’x14’ semi-displacement catamarans, designed by ACI Boats and Coastwise Marine Design. The first of the four vessels, to be completed in Fall/Winter 2022, will be used as a training platform for boat owners, captains, and deckhands. The following three boats, will be completed over the course of 18 months and will then be available for lease by the American Samoa Dept. of Commerce, intended to support the growth and safety of the local fishing fleet.

ACI Boats launches it’s first CatLander in it’s line of CatLander landing crafts. Built for the Jamestown Sklallam tribe in Washington State, the CatLander7500 will be used as a spill response support vessel by the tribe.
