?

The fun begins the moment you step aboard this spacious and comfortable 50-foot sailing catamaran for no more than 50 guests. Voted one of Bermuda's Top Tours, this is a catamaran and coral reef snorkel experience you won't want to miss and certainly will never forget.

Setting out from the pier, your captain and crew will give you more information on the islands of Bermuda as you sail along the coast on this King's Wharf port tour. They will also tell you a little bit about the marine life you'll see during your snorkeling. On this Bermuda excursion, you will be served complimentary bottled water, orange juice, pineapple juice, and the famous hot home-baked cookies that are prepared fresh on board daily. Before arriving at the location, a snorkel instruction and safety talk will be given.

Once you arrive at a secluded and picturesque, shallow water cove, the crew will drop anchor. Then, it's time to visit Bermuda's other beautiful world, the waters below.

Bermuda boasts one of the world's most northerly coral reef systems. The shallow waters around the islands are host to thousands of spectacular marine creatures. You will have approximately 2 hours for snorkeling and swimming off the boat, or just relaxing on deck. Life vests swim noodles, snorkel vests, stand-up paddle boards, and kayaks will also be provided for you to use during this time.

After the stop, the crew will pull anchor and will offer you a complimentary famous rum swizzle as you take a leisurely sail back to the pier. Additional swizzles can be purchased - a cash bar is also available.

To top off this great day, while you are having fun, you are also helping others. A portion of your trip's proceeds goes toward cancer research, with contributions being made to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Center. What a win-win for everyone!

It’s 45 mins cruise out to one spot on the reef - then 10 mins using the glass bottom looking at the coral and seeing a few fish (surprisingly few!). Then 10 mins looking at the one sunken ship that was deliberately sunk (so not a ship wreck). The guide told a few stories about the Bermuda Triangle but it wasn’t much of the commentary either. My 10 yr old enjoyed it but I found it underwhelming. Read more Written March 21, 2024

Jesse tells some great stories and has a nice sense of humor. John brought us to a spot on the ocean where we saw a tremendous sunset. Then, he cruised around in shallower areas so we could look through the glass bottom boat to see the coral and wildlife under the sea. We also got to go to a cool shipwreck. • sbounce14333 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Captain Rather take a nap then move the boat It was horrible We went on jolly Rogers Atlantic reel fishing trip. Out of 30 people probably caught about 10 fish. My problem is when we (people on boat)ask the captain to move the boat they said there was no need to. Now remind you we weren't catching anything for a while. And if you know the good captain will move the boat so that their customers will catch fish. And the worst part of all is the captain and one deck hand decided to take a nap instead of moving the boat. Waste of almost $300. And when I try to get a hold of someone they tell me I went through the cruise line I need to go through them for a refund. And the cruise line is only willing to refund me 25% where is this fair. Cool Cruiser

Has anyone done either of these snorkel tours? Which is better? We were going to do Restless Native, but it is on our second day, and I'd rather snorkel our first day. Thanks.

The restless native was fantastic and because is was on the 2nd day we did that and then spent the afternoon touring the fort and the shops there. We wanted to stay close by.

The crew of the Restless Native was fantastic and one of the best excursions we ever took.

7 Destinations Where Visitors Can Help Restore Coral Reefs

  • Coral reefs are essential for marine life and provide habitat for about 25% of all marine species.
  • Rising sea temperatures, pollution, and unsustainable fishing practices pose a severe risk to coral reefs and can lead to coral bleaching and death.
  • Various resorts and programs around the world are engaging in coral restoration efforts, including coral planting and transplantation, to help protect and restore coral reefs.

The magical underwater world – teeming with myriad marine life and dazzlingly colorful coral reefs – is the biggest draw for visitors to many island nations and coastal destinations, including Australia, Belize, the Caribbean, Indonesia, Galápagos, Maldives, and the Philippines, all of which have some incredible coral reefs .

Often referred to as the “rainforest of the seas,” the world’s coral reefs – with bright shades of orange, purple, and red – aren’t merely for recreational activities like snorkeling and scuba diving. They are the cornerstone of healthy ecosystems and sustain life underwater, which in turn helps feed and provide livelihoods for approximately 500 million people around the globe. However, our reefs are in danger due to rising sea temperatures caused by global climate change as well as pollution and unsustainable fishing.

It’s vital to protect our world’s coral reefs and the communities relying on them. As visitors, we can make a difference through a number of ways to help coral reefs. Keep reading to learn about the importance of safeguarding coral reefs and where to aid in their restoration around the world.

Why Coral Reefs Need Protection

Despite their resemblance to rocks or plants, corals are actually tiny animals related to jellyfish and anemones. In the world’s oceans, there are 800 species of coral that build reefs and many more species of soft corals.

“Coral reefs are essential and create a habitat for about 25% of all marine life,” says resident biologist and guide Rianne Laan of Thanda Island , a private getaway in the middle of the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania. “The three-dimensional coral structure provides a habitat for all kinds of marine animals and provides coastal protection and a food source for humans,” she adds.

Unfortunately, coral reefs are in danger , says Laan, with climate change, unsustainable fishing practices, and pollution being among significant stressors. “Ocean acidification and rising temperatures lead to coral bleaching, a severe risk to the corals that will die if the bleaching carries on for too long,” she warns. Massive bleaching events have caused significant damage to the coral reefs in many areas, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Barrier Reef, Western Australia , the Caribbean , Maldives , and East Africa .

The following resorts and programs are using innovative and immersive visitor experiences to help restore coral reefs in their corners of the world. Many utilize coral planting to assist the reefs in recovering and thriving, and they combine their efforts with the active protection of existing reefs.

In these programs, floating, living coral fragments broken off due to destructive fishing practices or pollution are collected during regular dives and brought ashore. During workshops, the resident marine biologist works with guests to attach these juvenile corals to ropes or frames that provide them with a fixed structure. They are then placed underwater on the seabed in coral gardens so they can start growing. They are monitored regularly to ensure they are establishing themselves and reproducing on their own.

Thanda Island, Tanzania

Hands-on experiences via a workshop for those interested in coral conservation.

The African country of Tanzania has plenty of beautiful places . Located just 24 nautical miles from the coast lies the 20-acre Thanda Island, a luxurious, private island destination in the Indian Ocean. It is surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve and its own coral reef. Nearby, the protected Mafia Island Marine Park stretches nearly 320 square miles and is home to a diversity of coral, several turtle species, and hundreds of species of reef fish. Visitors are drawn to the island for the whale sharks – the world’s largest fish – that frequent these warm waters and snorkeling around the two large hanging coral nurseries that attract plenty of tropical fish.

Thanda Island started its project in 2017 by placing a few coral nurseries in the water. It has been partnering with the nonprofit The Ropes of Hope since 2021 and hopes to restore a large reef of one hectare over the next five years.

  • How to help: Thanda Island offers hands-on experiences via a workshop for those interested in coral conservation. Visitors get to see the corals up close and fill their own ropes to add to the nursery. The main attraction is the giant concrete underwater mermaid sculpture created by Antigone Meda, Island Manager, that doubles as a coral nursery located just a five-minute boat ride from the resort under the waters of the Shungimbili Reserve.
  • Capacity: Thanda Island Resort sleeps 18 guests comfortably.
  • Cost: Exclusive use of Thanda Island is offered at USD $45,000 per night for a maximum of 12 travelers, all-inclusive for a minimum of five nights. Coral restoration activities are included in the price.

Coco Collection, Maldives

A coral planting session on the beach with the onsite marine biologist.

Coco Collection’s Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu sits on a private island surrounded by the waters of the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll in the Maldives, the world's lowest-lying country known for island hopping . Just steps from the villas lies the stunning house reef, teeming with marine life. In 2019, Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu began a coral garden consisting of several metal frames providing habitat for many species of corals.

Coral are slow-growing animals and require patience and delicate care, according to Rosalie Bailie, Marine Educator. The frames planted a few years ago are starting to blossom and flourish, attracting schools of fish, crabs and snails, and other animals. “Previously, this site was mostly rubble and sand, but has become a vibrant ecosystem, attracting blacktip reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, and hawksbill turtles,” she adds. The garden frames are an attraction for snorkelers on the house reef.

  • How to help: During an hour-long workshop, guests can help plant tiny fragments of coral by affixing them onto a metal frame, which is added to the coral garden. Participants have the option of adopting the coral for a fee and receiving periodic updates. A weekly marine presentation gives guests more information about coral conservation and the coral replanting journey. "Once our ‘planted’ corals are large and mature enough, they will start to spawn and reproduce. The spawned corals are then likely to spread across our reefs. We are eager for this next stage of our project,” shares Bailie.
  • Cost: The coral frame adoption activity costs $100 per frame.
  • What does it include: A coral planting session on the beach with the onsite Marine Biologist, with an optional guided snorkel to the coral garden. Participants will also receive underwater photos of the frame, a certificate, and updates every six months for the next two years.

Guided snorkel safaris with manta rays.

The Great Barrier Reef is among the world's most valuable underwater treasures . As the largest living system in the world, it consists of thousands of reefs of different shapes and sizes and at least 600 coral species . Scientists predict the reef (along with the tourism it supports) may disappear by 2050 if steps aren’t taken to restore it. Visitors to the reef can participate in citizen science initiatives to help protect this natural wonder.

Debuting in 2024, Lady Musgrave Experience ’s latest offering is a three-level pontoon, an innovative research platform powered by solar and wind that provides immersive educational opportunities and the chance to sleep above the waters of the Great Barrier Reef. Lady Musgrave operates in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and UNESCO World Heritage area on the southern Great Barrier Reef near Bundaberg.

Visitors stay on the pontoon and have access to dining, an underwater observatory, snorkel and dive platforms, high-speed dive boats, a luxury catamaran, and a glass-bottom boat. The pontoon features underwater liveaboard-style bunk beds and upper deck island or reef-view glamping beds.

Nanuku Resort, Fiji

Help with coral planting, nursery cleaning, coral transplanting, & more.

Set across multiple breathtaking volcanic islands in the South Pacific , Fiji offers a dream vacation with several luxury resorts and activities. Among them is Nanuku Resort , located on a private 500-acre tropical coastal estate on the main island of Viti Levu near Pacific Harbour. The onsite coral replanting, which is part of the larger sustainability program called the Batiwai Project, is tailored for the entire family. The project is aimed at reducing the resort’s footprint and improving the local environment, as well as the quality of life of those in the surrounding communities.

The LaiLai Children’s Club , the resort’s newest initiative launched on Earth Day of 2023, is geared towards teaching younger guests about sustainability practices and local culture. It also served as the launch of the new rope nurseries, which are suited for the tidal area and known to provide a better method for coral fragments' survival.

  • How to help: Nanuku guests can help with coral planting, nursery cleaning, coral transplanting, and planting mangrove trees, among other activities. The onsite marine scientist hosts coral workshops for guests to learn about the process of propagation from fragments to transplantation of established coral back onto the resort’s reef.
  • Cost: All coral reef restoration experiences on the property are complimentary for guests staying at Nanuku Resort.

Help with long-term conservation through the ‘adopt a coral garden’ program.

Situated in the community of Tucker's Point in Bermuda, Rosewood Bermuda is a charming luxury resort that offers guests educational seaside chats and opportunities to witness the reef gardens on snorkeling and kayaking excursions courtesy of a partnership with the Living Reefs Foundation , which in turn works with the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS).

The nonprofit, which launched its Coral Garden initiative in 2016, aims to restore and protect the Atlantic's northernmost reefs; it is composed of environmentalists, scientists, and water sports operators. The first Coral Garden was installed near Rosewood, Bermuda’s guest cottages.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba , Mexico

Banyan Tree Mayakoba , in the beautiful travel destination of Playa Del Carmen , is a luxury property in the heart of Mexico’s Riviera Maya, connecting guests with immersive experiences in nature. The resort partners with Oceanus AC , which has planted more than 60,000 coral colonies in the Mexican Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico since 2014. The Mesoamerican reef is the second-largest reef in the world, extending nearly 700 miles in the Caribbean Sea from the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula down towards the Honduran Bay Islands, touching the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.

The goal of Oceanus AC is to construct coral nurseries and transplant thousands of thriving colonies to increase diversity and promote resilience. Interested guests at Banyan Tree Mayakoba can take an excursion on a catamaran to Punta Maroma, where they can participate in snorkeling and visit the coral reef nursery.

  • How to help: Visitors can also partake in seasonal coral framing and planting under the guidance of marine biologists.
  • Cost: During Reef Week each July, guests can do the coral restoring activity for free. Throughout the rest of the year, guests can participate in the regular snorkel activity and learn about coral reef restoration for $79 a person.

Christopher Hotel, St. Barths, Caribbean

As the only Green Globe-certified hotel on St. Barths, the boutique Christopher Hotel focuses on sustainability, marine conservation, and community impact. The family-owned hotel is perched on a bluff of Pointe Milou on the northeast coast of the island. It supports the Artireef Project to help restore the 38 species of corals at Pointe Milou’s reef.

The coral restoration project, which began in 2016, uses the Biorock Process. Coral cuttings endemic to the Lesser Antilles are planted on metallic structures offshore from the hotel, and an electric current (powered by the hotel) passes through them to expedite coral growth and improve survival rates. The coral will flourish around structures designed after attractions such as the Eiffel Tower and the Egyptian pyramids.

  • How to help: Hotel guests can help fund the coral replanting efforts by ordering the famous “Coco Loco'' cocktail.
  • Cost: The price of the cocktail is € 24 ($26), with € 2 ($2.18) going towards coral restoration. In 2022, € 3,021($3,295) was donated to the association for coral restoration.

Memory Making Western Caribbean Family Vacation Ideas

Going wild in roatán my oh my, costa maya crazy for cozumel your perfect day at cococay®.

By Heidi Sarna | Published on March 19, 2024

With pools and restaurants, cruise ships are their own destination. But a cruise on a fabulous kid-friendly ship sailing a Western Caribbean itinerary is a family vacation to remember.

Cruising round-trip from sunny Miami, Icon of the Seas'℠ Western Caribbean itineraries, for example, call at four ports with tons of personality. They're some of the region's best spots for die-hard beach bums, nature lovers and heritage buffs. Embrace the wild side of Roatán's jungles and spectacular coral reefs. Pack your beach bag for a Western Caribbean family vacation to the beautiful stretches of sand that grace Mexico's Costa Maya and Cozumel — or maybe you'd rather lace up your sneakers to climb the ancient Mayan ruins of Kohunlich. At fun-in-the-sun Perfect Day at CocoCay®, it's all about taking full advantage of the beautiful beaches and exciting water sports conveniently offered at Royal Caribbean's private island paradise in The Bahamas. Combine the dazzling new Icon of the Seas℠ with these dazzling destinations for a top kid-friendly vacation.

Trunk Bay St. Johns Beach

Going Wild In Roatán

If your idea of having the best family island vacation means a walk on the wild side, Roatán is one of the best places for nature lovers in the Western Caribbean.

At almost 40 miles long, Roatán sports a mountainous backbone surrounded by the world's second-largest barrier reef — the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system — which means excellent snorkeling and diving are in order. (Go aheaf and tick that off your bucket list!)

Head over to the island's West End and West Bay area, where Roatán's fringing coral reef is just a short swim from the beach. Don your mask and snorkel and float above the labyrinthine reefs to mingle with tropical fish of every imaginable color. It's also likely that you'll see brilliant brain coral, pretty sea fans and other marine life like sea turtles and nurse sharks. Divers will want to head to the West End Marine Reserve at Sandy Bay for some of the world's best diving ,with 38 unique sites, all no more than a 15-minute boat ride away from the shore.

You can also opt for a cruise through Roatán's mangrove trees or hike the verdant heliconia-lined trails of the Gumbalimba Park nature reserve to see (and hear!) the resident macaws and white-faced capuchin monkeys. See this natural wonderland, alive with black spiny-tailed and red iguanas, on solid ground or go for the bird's-eye view on a zipline through the rainforest canopy.

If some of your family members would prefer to dig their toes in the sand, Roatán's soft, white-sand beaches are another great way to spend your day. Head to West Bay and Half Moon Bay to set up camp. There, cool off in the refreshing surf or go for another round of snorkeling along the reef. When you're ready to dry off and explore, check out the restaurants, bars and souvenir shops just steps from your beach towel.

When the hunger pangs hit, try local fare, such as a baleada, a folded tortilla filled with refried beans, crema fresca and crumbled farmer's cheese.

Coral Reef Snorkeling, Roatan, Honduras

My Oh My, Costa Maya

Mexico Yucatan Peninsula Cenote Azul

About 100 miles south of Cozumel, near the fishing village of Mahahual, Costa Maya sits along the Mexico-Belize border. This port offers something for everyone and seamlessly links the past and the present. The best Western Caribbean family vacations are all about choice, and a day in Costa Maya offers it in spades.

History enthusiasts in the family will appreciate the opportunity to explore the ancient Mayan ruins outside of Costa Maya at sites called Kohunlich and Chacchoben, each more than 1,000 years old. Beautifully mysterious, many of the temples and structures have become partially or fully covered in vegetation over the centuries, becoming one with the natural environment. Some ruins appear as mounds of earth (they're underneath) and others have co-mingled with the tangled roots of trees and foliage. One day they might be restored, but there is splendor in their natural state, too.

Kohunlich dates back to the third century; its most notable feature is the pyramid-shaped Temple of the Masks, built to honor the Mayan sun god with a central stairway flanked by large stucco masks.

Similarly, it's believed that by 360 AD, the Chacchoben community was an important destination for ceremonial rituals. Today, you can see remains of the site's Great Plaza and the Gran Basamento, a sacred area where religious rites were once practiced.

Those who prefer living in the moment can check out the stunning undersea life of the very same coral reef that runs along Roatán, Honduras and Belize. It's the second largest in the world after Australia's Great Barrier Reef, and it's easily accessible from the beaches of Costa Maya. Grab a mask and some fins and hop in the water to witness the magic of marine life. There are more than 65 species of stony corals, 350 species of mollusks and some 500 species of fish!

Other colorful underwater sites to explore from Costa Maya include the pristine Banco Chinchorro. A spectacular ring-shaped coral island encircling a lagoon, it's the biggest platform reef system in Mexico and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Another must-see bucket list item for water babies? Taking a dip in the sparkling blue waters of Cenote Azul, a freshwater swimming hole.

When it's time to relax and refuel, head back to the port village of Mahahual for a cold drink. Why not try a refreshing michelada , a spicy beer cocktail? And if lunch is on your mind, the restaurants of Costa Maya's resorts and boutique hotels are reliable spots to sample traditional favorites like cochinita pibil , a delicious slow-roasted pork dish and agua de jamaica , a sweetened hibiscus drink.

Chacchoben Mayan Ruins, Costa Maya, Mexico

Crazy For Cozumel

Tulum, Mexico Temple of the Wind God

Marrying heritage with a modern festive vibe, the island of Cozumel promises one of the best family vacation days you can imagine. With something for the whole family to enjoy, Cozumel is a thriving port that makes a Western Caribbean family vacation truly memorable.

If you're set on checking off ancient Mayan temples from your travel list, Cozumel gives you access to several impressive sites. The Mayas lived in the area for 12 centuries and left their mark at the gorgeous walled city of Tulum on the Riviera Maya. Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; its heyday was in the 13th to 15th centuries.

Further afield, if you're willing to put in the two-and-a-half hours of travel time. you'll marvel at the spectacular Chichén Itzá, the largest and most fabled of the Yucatán ruins. Founded in 445 AD, the city had about 50,000 residents at its height. By the early 13th century, Chichén Itzá was deserted and relinquished to the surrounding jungle until it was rediscovered in the 19 th  century. Its star relic is the magnificent El Castillo pyramid, which was inspired by the Mayan calendar. There are 365 steps to the top, representing the days in a single solar year.

You might prefer to check out Mayan ruins closer to the port at the small San Gervasio archeological site on the island of Cozumel. This way you'll have more time to hit a powdery white-sand beach. Near the town, you'll find the popular Playa Mia, among the best beaches for families on the Yucatán peninsula, with water sports, slides and lots of dining opportunities.

For snorkeling and swimming, the best spots here are the saltwater lagoon, offshore reefs and underwater caves of Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park.

If your focus is more on drinks and eats, go local and sample Mexican dishes like panucho (fried tortillas stuffed with refried black beans and piled with pulled chicken, tomatoes, pickled red onions, avocado and jalapeño peppers) or pescado frito  (fried fish). Wash it all down with a chilled bottle of cerveza ; you'll find international beer brands alongside local microbrews.

Mexican Food Panucho, it is made with masa, cooked on a dry, cast iron skillet until slightly puffy, then a slit is made in the tortilla and it is stuffed with beans, sealed, then lightly fried

Your Perfect Day At Cococay®

Perfect Day at CocoCay® offers many complimentary experiences. Pick your passion: swim in the Oasis Lagoon, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, or watch the kids splash around the water cannons and slides of shipwrecked Captain Jill's Galleon. Grab free beach chairs and umbrellas at the powdery sands of Chill Island℠ and South Beach — two of the best beaches for families in The Bahamas.

For an extra charge, kids and young-at-heart-adults will be grinning ear to ear at CocoCay's Thrill Waterpark® , which has a floating trampoline, a wave pool and 13 crazy waterslides, including the tallest one in North America.
